EIU welcomes the return of spring with its

own “festival of colors” based on Holi – a

Hindu festival that is celebrated in India and

Nepal. The festival has various legends

attached to it, but is basically a celebration

of the triumph of good over evil. During Holi,

celebrants splash each other with water and

throw gulal (colored powder) into the air. At

EIU, the celebration has become an Asian

Heritage Month event. It is co-sponsored

by the Office of Study Abroad and by the

University Board.

honors collegethe sandra and jack pine

If you are looking for a serious academic challenge, the Sandra and Jack Pine Honors College at Eastern can provide it. Classes include only those students who are driven to succeed, who come prepared to class and who engage with the subject matter – giving their all as part of tight-knit groups of learners. Classes are capped at 18, which allows professors to know their students well and assist them in finding application for knowledge, delving deeper into issues at the center of debate in the disciplines. Last year, more than 80 Honors College students shared their research and capstone experiences through art shows, scientific publications, concert hall recitals and national conference talks. Eastern regularly sends more students to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research than any other college in Illinois.

In addition to small classes and carefully thought-out course loads, honors students receive priority registration, honors housing, advising and numerous opportunities for scholarships and research grants. Depending on academic scores, incoming Honors College freshmen may be eligible for substantial awards, including: The Pemberton Presidential Scholarship (full-ride), The Presidential Scholarship ($11,000 per year), Honors College Talented Student Awards ($3,000 per year), and Commitment to Excellence Awards ($3,500 to $4,500 per year).

wasps, you can find her working on her volley with the EIU tennis team.

A lot of people call Eastern home, and we intend to make it feel that way. Freshmen are required to live on campus during their first year at EIU, and we’re pretty sure you’ll love it. In fact, many students choose to stay in the residence halls throughout their time at Eastern.

We know nothing can top a home-cooked meal, but we’ve done our best to provide a variety of dining options. Armed with only your Panther Card, you can get basic college staples like cereal; order a custom-made omelet; and enjoy familiar favorites like pizza, salads and burgers.

Your choices will include three dining centers, the University Food Court with five fast/fresh food locations, the Java Beanery and Bakery coffee shop, Panther Pantry and a Marketplace Convenience Center. Finding a place to eat and relax here is not going to be a problem. We promise.

4The university offers two graduation guarantees for many majors – a four-year guarantee for freshmen and a two year guarantee for transfer students. The program is simple: If you qualify and complete the student responsibilities, we guarantee that you will finish your degree on time – saving you additional tuition, fees and living expenses.

Nationwide, only 1 in 4 college students complete a bachelor’s degree in four years, and nearly half take 5 years or more! Visit www.eiu.edu/eiufour to learn how you can be that 1 out of 4.

This plan applies only to tuition; all other expenses, including fees and room/board, may change.
