PRE-NCAA GAME – Training Camp Practice 3
• Understanding of commitment it takes to be successful – not just physical, mental is the difference
• Let the ball do the work in the triangle
• Shock angle – treat it like a yellow as the shocker
Individual Talks
• Mitch slowing down (Apply what we have focused on all summer)
• Rocca using trail entry rather than get stuck with size wide on wing
• Jr less side to side and more straight lines
• Brad ankle (out) – Assistant coach for the day
1. 4 on 4 Fastbreak League (Ball movt/zero seconds)
2. 5 on 5 on 5 Triangle

option to develop – poise not panic
– Figure it out if stuck
3. 5 on 0 Transition Review
4. Closeout Rebounding into 3 Trips

the face

Practice 01
• Growth mindset is about improvement, not promises of success – focus on getting better
• This team has a spirit already that can take it to high places
How we are going to teach? Why we teach this way?
• Teaching skills & tactics through games – give you a situation/scenario & you have to make decisions based on
your skill & knowledge
• More closely simulated how we play
The Triangle
• A structure for spacing & is positionless but match-up conscious
• Progression of options & decisions – why it connects with zero seconds and BDT
• Pass keys the next option – If defense takes away a pass there is a logical next option
• If run right it connects people – cooperation & freedom
1. 5 on 5 on 5 Post is Open
– Dig on catch
– Decision based on match-up & corner sag
2. 5 on 5 St Anne’s Press Offense vs. 1-2-2 Quick Trap
– Progression on catch – Up, Middle, Reverse on 1st catch – on 2nd
catch look Skip, Up, Middle, Reverse
– High catch vs. pressure creates better spacing
– In chaos keep the ball moving
3. 5 on 5 3 Trips
– Push wing if wing denied – Fast exchange & top fill to clear out
direct entry
– On direct entry read the corner sag (if not a denial team corner is
a great option out of transition as defender usually in pack)
4. 5 on 5 ½ Slant – What to do vs. dribble attack
– Force into slant off the top
– Early in help “full-body”, recover on dribble
– Understand rotation if necessary
– Also “dead” if good match-up
5. 5 on 5 on 5
– Top entry & into downscreen & handoffs
– What options are there (chances are we are late clock)
6. SOB Special Situation “Delay”
– Delay & Delay Again
– What do we need to know about SOB late game?
• Intensity was consistent
• Sharing the ball spirit
• Big picture
understanding – initial
learning phase
• Communication cues
• Mental “let it go”
strategies
• Offensive rebounding
effort with 4
• Transition defense first

– Trail = 2 man game off flex & follow
– Wing Hit or Push (Dribble off the lane triggers trail & wing
exchange – fill top & weakside low)
– Direct to Post

- Shooter or non shooter – challenge to level of range of player with ball - Cover ball with 3 as much as possible - Guards have first pass responsibility – make sure butt to middle so can see corners
- Man principles on closeouts
- BALL and HELP communication - Posts have extra/next pass to the corner
- Guards cover the skip passes
- Low post coverage – always be on top and if there is a corner – half and half with other
post help
- Double every post entry from corner to post – guards form I and have kickouts
- Attacking out of the corner (posts) – switch post and wing
DEFEND SITUATIONS 1. Baseline Runner – bump and get over top on last one
- work runner back and forth to work action
2. Ballscreen – hedge with big coming up or switch guards - weakside post must cover skip to corner
3. Loop – switch
4. vs. Double High – switch and posts take extra pass (ballscreen rules)
5. Screen Outside of Zone – bump out
6. Middle Cutters – take cutter a few steps then recover to the top
7. Lateral Dribbles – bump switch
8. Overload and Flash – post go with cutter and be aware of baseline help – weakside wing
DROP – play on low side on FLASH
9. vs. 1-4 High

• Why I am dating emails to you – Accountable to read & answer (habit)
• Youtube views – Learn by staring
• After an off day should be refreshed & energized
Ballscreen Defense Terminology and Understanding
early/jam/pack all the same thing - not in denial - in the lopsided triangle
flat is the call for all but yes refers to bigs position - not hedging - helping in not up
the guard on flat chases over the screen (get through on their own - forearm on the thigh of the ballhandler and trying to get their leg
between the screen and the ballhandler - ie. don't let the ballhandler get to the screener's shoulder)
goal is to give up the mid-range contested or at the rim contested or force the longest pass
1. Italian Drill/Hall of Fame Drill/Circle Trap (Ball Toughness/Pivoting Drills)
2. Oakland Closeouts
– Skip & X Out
– Ballscreen

– Handoffs
3. 5 on 0 Fullcourt Triangle

4. Closeout Rebounding 5 Trips

Humber Game Feedback 09/22/14
• Work on cat & mouse 2-man game
• Yellow – post action
• Help in, not up
• Evan inconsistent
• Settled for 3 behind ballscreen
• Communication is a constant not a once in a while
• Void of post touches - most times not even looking there - might have to have a play call where we have to go to the post direct or high low to the post. Some thing where we look to the post then fake passing back to the top and having the opposite big flash to the backdoor spot and either go direct or lob or high lo.
• Good on the ball defense or they were just bad or a little of both, wing denial good at times as well.
• Thought we rebounded fairly well especially offensively
• Don’t know how many guys can handle being a 3 and a 4 - we have to make sure they know what they are when they go in
• Bigs got to pinch post too quick, timing issues
• Need Khalid to have the ball in his hands a lot especially in 2 man game
• Unselfish
• 32 ok other than when Steph got lost twice - we need to be able to get into it with out calling it out

Fanshawe Game Feedback 09/27/14
• Concentration was a struggle – too many up & down moments
• Yellow was better getting into coverage but guard too often
worried about recovering to the screener – weakside bluff was
lacking
• Difficulty attacking pressure off the dribble – straight lines –
pivot ball toughness
• SOB secondary reads
• Alex was positive on both ends
• Leadership/Communication void
• Forced passes & transitions
• Need to designate inbounders sooner than later
• 2-man game was improved – intent if not execution
• 2 guards on side confusion – figure it out but may need more
• White was default & handled it well
• Play calls to attack match-ups?
• Moving screen on handoffs – was it us or random officials call?
• On ball aggressive, next pass too easy though
• 32 limited but rotations were slow
• Khalid needs to be match-up more often
• Backdoor spot to high low to create more post presence

• Vs 1-4 Flat BOB – Lob coverage
• No switch in BOB defense – If in 32 or 10 than automatic
default on all BOB is 20
• Transition hit aheads were excellent
• Struggled with exchange in triangle – waited too long
• Flowed and figured stuff out for the most part
• Leadership and coaching from teammates was positive
• Got complacent on defense boards and started to run without
the rebound
• Early 3’s were good decisions in the flow
• 10 have to distinguish between cutters and screeners
• Didn’t use 32 because of match-ups
• Small line-up was effective
• Spin or swim vs. defensive box out
• Deflections were impactful – active hands
• Jammed the ball too tight on 55 – leave the gap so have the
spin option
• Vs 2-2-1 struggled – spacing/understanding/discipline to stay

West Coast Games Feedback
10/20/14
• Need secondary cutters when game slows down in the post.
• Follow through with your eyes on lay-ups.
• Why you go through what you do daily in practice – Develop mindset to persevere.
• Toughness and confidence come from experiences.
• We are better when we play fast.
• Ball should attack until get stopped, then run offense.
• Up-Down switch is an effective last game adjustment (or vice versa).
• Trust the scout – Just because a rondo makes a shot, they don’t suddenly become an Allen.
• Down-screen to enter to the top vs. denial. Counter is the backdoor spot.
• Need more straight line drives. Too many change of directions when not forced to.
• On the road need to get to the free throw line more.
• Play through the post and corner more.
• Robotic at times in one decision. See more options.
• Opening tip and fullcourt SOB sleepers from UBC.
• Handled improvised coaching moments well.
• More ways to post up guard match-ups.
• Handled foul trouble well.
• Conditioning over three games in three days was positive.
• Struggled when lost flow on offense.

UNITY Assembly – Academie St
CecileThank you. It is wonderful to be here today to talk to you about what unity and
teamwork mean to us as a team. You probably think we have a strong community
already? We have won 6 games already. We have not lost a game. We have been
successful. But I want you to know that we are not perfect as a team. We have to
constantly work on being a team. We have disagreements. We have problems.
There are egos, jealousy, complaining, lack of acceptances. We have players that
sometimes do not see things the same way as a teammate or as me as a coach.
We don’t pretend to be perfect. We do however work on being unified.
WHY do we work at it?
Because no one if life is successful without the help of others. We need each other
to be successful.
Here is what unity looks like on our team.
5 Fingers together in a FIST
Here’s what it looks like when we are not unified.
5 Fingers apart.
You can understand how much of a stronger force we are when we work together
as a fist than an open hand.
For you as a student. You need the help/support of classmates, teachers, friends,
family to be successful. It is much easier to swim up stream working with others
than working alone.
So how do we do it? We have players from different countries, different
backgrounds, different cities, different academic levels. What unites us is a common
purpose or direction. We need to recognize that every person has a special talent
or quality that can help us move in the same direction.
And what I have learned in my 20+ years of coaching is that what a person looks
like on the outside has nothing to do with what a is on the inside. I will give you two
examples…imagine if just recruited the ideal basketball player – tall, athletic, fast.
I would have missed out on 2 special talents.
Mike Rocca and Evan Matthews
Stereotypes do not apply to either one of them 34

Toronto/Ryerson Games Feedback
11/14-15/14
• Reaches on two hand defensive rebounds instead of get back
• Rebounding killed us - no physicality, poor position, lack of
effort. They get numerous second chances and we cant score
in transition.
• Khalid early foul hurt took him out of his game did not look
good Friday either.
• Transition defense?? Poor communication, lack of effort, lack
of intelligence??
• Brad looked like he had lead boots as well as Tyler.
• No faith in zone - thought you might go with it after their early
run. Who knows - missed some good looks during that time
that would have helped too.
• They were better than us last night playing the same style
theoretically. Second game and on road could not have
helped.
• Other teams did not help us prepare for their athleticm and our
lack of depth wont either.
• Work on team rebounding daily.
• 55 the good teams intermittently.
• Might need some zone down the road - disguise it better - trap
corners - deny reversal after wing entry.
• Some losses bound to happen - win out and we are in better
shape than we thought.

Lakehead Games Feedback 11/22/14
• Adapted well in 2nd half to adjustments
• Tough travel day – experience that built mental toughness?
• Trust yellow – understand what shot they should be shooting
and it is ok as long as contested
• Cover the ball in 32 – communicate to another level
• More pinch post match-ups
• Should have run Scottie action more
• Need more weakside focus in triangle – teams loading up
ballside – we are pinning but not looking
• Khalid needs to demand ball late game
• Act like you have been there – new guys in new roles so
responsibilities are different but expectations the same
• Front defense – Weakside help focus was lacking
• Boxed out better – Brad, Evan
• Need Alex and Tyler to make a jump

Brock Mac Games Feedback
11/31/14
• Take care of the first night to make second night easier
• Different coverage of horns? Created the match-up but
struggled off the ball with cutters and defensive rebounding
• Finish drills? Missed lay-ups
• Getting to free throw line and need to convert high percentage
• Sight off the ball – too much ball staring
• Transition offense lacked flow at times
• Wheel was effective
• Ball paused too much because of the dribble
• Should have used 32 more?
• Created match-up with Jr well
• Gave up too many transition wing catches
• Pace was positive
• Closeouts too tight and angle gave up middle
• First rotation in help was positive, second was not proactive
enough
• Feel in love with the top – needed to play through the post
more – ok to do a good thing over and over again
• Lost Mitch in the second half – played great in straight lines in
first and didn’t create opportunities for him in second

Western Game Feedback 01/08/15
• Started in pre-game
• Sluggish defensive effort covering 1 on 1 match-ups and
closeouts
• Guard rebounding
• Worst spacing we have played with in a while
• Top pass was too tempting – resist and pass to backdoor and
post
• Evan’s injury hurts our post presence – no trust to play
through anyone else – emphasis on kickout and re-screen
action
• 32 needed guard to cover first pass more
• Lost sight too much in no man’s land positon
• Simplicity in last 5 minutes – too many turnovers – offense
presents the opportunities
• 10 lacked communication and aggression in switching
• Had only one sustained run and it fell apart because we
couldn’t cover the three point shooters
• Made free throws was positive
• Wheel was positive – counters were for wrong guys and wrong
times
• Out of timeouts was disaster – been good with this why no

01/23-24/15

invested as much for every win

understanding that it is fundamentals and execution that win
• Free throw line -28 3’s vs 15 attempts vs Ottawa

• Too many dribbles when wing is opne
• Backdoor coverage – weakside awareness
• Trouble adjusting in Ottawa game to ballscreen changes
• Focus on what matters a lot easier to coach you
• Pace of practice the previous week helped you

more on excecution

• Let down was inevitable
• Team has hard dealing with success and remembering what it

• On the positive lots of resiliency
• First half was worst every played – everything broke down
• 2nd half was inspired and dominant
• Should have been forewarned after queen’s game
• Trouble with the backdoor and high low – haven’t been hurt
much like that ever
• Offense was not an issue in either game
• Officiating us differently now? Confusing to play I am sure

did

Laurentian/Nipissing Game Feedback
02/06-02/07
• Impressive effort by bench – ruled the weekend
• Issues with commitment to the end-goal
• Long-term implications of discipline
• Pounded it inside against laurentian – lost 2nd half focus
• Two dominant starts to games – needed change
• Alex is playing best ball – create more situations for him with
catches in space
• Rocca broke out of confidence slump – shot it enough to be
rewarded
• Too many help down when not needed situations – trying to
make a play instead of staying disciplined
• Introduce baseline Red this week
• Swing and Quick seem confused and trouble executing
• Yellow needed to rotate and got confused – closest high player
rotates
• Played through the post early and really opened up the court
• SOB execution needs refinement
• Remind them on 32 what shots beat us as we are panicking
on the wrong things
• Closeouts all week – keep the focus

• BOB sleepers were well executed.
• Chance to play some of the bench mixed with others in game
situation. K showed much development since beginning of

• Transition flowed and we played fast.
• Took their one match-up out of the game in both games.

Laurier Game Feedback 02/21
• Slow defensive start – scout mistakes on personnel and lack
of ballside denial
• Clutching and grabbing affected our pace – have to be able to
play through and adapt
• Second to fourth quarters we locked down defensively
• Half-court trap was a non factor – we just attacked and moved
the ball
• Rocca got deep by forcing too many bounces – energy from
the shot and simplicity – too frenetic – better at 90%
• Brad has to run away from fouls – unnecessary
• Evan’s first big on big match-up in while – expectation through
the playoffs so channel that focus
• Alex box out issue – reminder and reinforce
• LA went all to the post – reminder about secondary cutters

• Sluggish start? Nerves? Lack of respect?
• Toronto ran some great counters to our white…prepare for

• Went after us on the boards…need to be more committed.
• Road trip will be good for focus?
• 2nd half re-focus was all we needed…need 40 vs. McMaster.
