84 luMber arena

84 Lumber Arena, formerly known as the RMU

Island Sports Center Ice Arena, has been home to

the Colonials since 2004. Tucked into the corner

of Neville Island next to the Ohio River, 84 Lumber

Arena has welcomed nearly over 130,000 fans for

RMU men’s hockey games over the past decade.

The arena was originally built as part of the

$10 million Robert Morris University Island Sports

Center facility cluster which includes two ice rinks,

a domed multi-sport facility and more. On March

21, 2012, Robert Morris University announced

that it had struck a deal with 84 Lumber for the

naming rights of the arena.

“84 Lumber has been a significant sponsor of

hockey at all levels throughout the years, from the

Penguins to the PIHL and America’s Showcase,”

said Jeff Nobers, vice president of marketing

at 84 Lumber, when the deal was struck. “This

partnership of adding the naming rights to an

arena that is host to both men’s and women’s

Division I NCAA hockey programs is a logical

extension.

“The RMU Island Sports Center hosts tens of

thousands of patrons every year, so being able to

attach our name to a great facility and university

offers benefits that go well beyond marketing.”

The arena is also home to the RMU women’s

hockey team and the Colonials’ twin ACHA club

teams.

Head coach Derek Schooley has his Colonials

primed to take the next step after a major

breakthrough in 2013-14.

Now in his 11th year in charge of RMU men’s

hockey, Schooley enters the 2014-15 season with

an overall record of 143-175-45. Last season, he

led the Colonials to their first conference title and

inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance.

Following the banner year, Schooley signed a

three-year contract extension that will keep him in

Moon Township through the 2019-20 season.

Schooley has been a college hockey coach for

17 seasons, starting with stints as an assistant

at Cornell University and the Air Force Academy.

In August of 2003, Schooley was named the first

head varsity hockey coach in Robert Morris history.

Since taking over the program, Schooley

has coached 45 players who have signed pro

contracts, five players that have taken part in NHL

training camps and numerous others that have

participated in NHL developmental camps.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Schooley is married

to the former Alicia Batson from Middleville, Mich.

They are the proud parents of Kaitlyn, Brendan

and Taylor.

The 2013-14 campaign was a banner year

in many ways for RMU, as their Atlantic Hockey

Association title capped a torrid second half of the

season that saw the Colonials compile a 17-6-3

record from January on. RMU went 6-1 in the

AHA playoffs, culminating in an overtime win over

Niagara in the semifinals and a 7-4 defeat of

Canisius in the final. Although the Colonials fell to

No. 1-ranked Minnesota in the first round of the

NCAA Tournament, they had officially gone where

no RMU hockey team had gone before.

Schooley’s teams have provided college

hockey and Robert Morris athletics with some

major upsets in the past few seasons. In January

of 2007, the Colonials knocked off No.2 Notre

Dame 4-2 in South Bend, Ind. During the following

season, Robert Morris won the prestigious Nye

Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska, with an

upset of four-time national champion and eighth-

ranked Boston University.

The Colonials upped the ante in the 2009-10

season with a sweep against No. 1 ranked Miami.

Just three seasons later, Schooley’s Colonials

would again knock of a nationally ranked Miami

squad; this time it was to capture the inaugural

Three Rivers Classic.

During the 2012-13 season, the Colonials

knocked off three nationally-ranked teams en

route to a 20-win campaign. Two seven-game

unbeaten streaks allowed Schooley to guide his

squad to a fifth-place regular season finish.

After winning the Three Rivers Classic, Schooley

and his team earned their second national ranking

in program history as the Colonials broke in to the

polls as the No. 19 team in the country heading in

to January and a nationally-televised game against

Army.

RMU finished seventh in Atlantic Hockey during

the 2011-12 season while boasting the best

penalty kill in the nation as the successfully killed

off 89.9 percent of their penalties.

Schooley led the Colonials to a banner season

in 2010-11 guiding the RMU to a school-record

18 wins in a season when the Colonials earned

their first national ranking. Robert Morris finished

fifth in its first season in the Atlantic Hockey

Association and hosted its first ever postseason

game in the first round of the AHA Tournament.

In the 2009-10 season at Mellon Arena, the

former home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Schooley

led the Colonials to their first win against a team

ranked No. 1 in the nation as Robert Morris

defeated Miami (Ohio) in the Pittsburgh College

Hockey Showcase. The Colonials followed the win

up with a trip to Oxford, Ohio, and picked up a

sweep against the 2009 National Runners-Up.

During the 2008-09 campaign, Robert Morris

got off to a rough start with a team consisting of

only four seniors and 14 underclassmen. However,

the Colonials rebounded in the second half of

the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak.

Their record of 10-19-7 and third place finish in

College Hockey America featured a run to the CHA

Championship game where Robert Morris lost an

overtime heartbreaker to an eventual Frozen Four

team, Bemidji State.

In 2007-08, Schooley’s Colonials achieved

their first 15 win and .500 season going 15-15-4,

once again earning a third-place finish in the CHA.

The 07-08 season featured many other firsts for

Coach Schooley and the Colonial Hockey program.

Senior forward Ryan Cruthers was named 2008

CHA Player of the Year and was nominated for the

Hobey Baker Award, which is awarded annually to

college hockey’s most outstanding player.

Schooley led his team to a 14-19-2 overall

record and a third-place finish in the CHA in 2006-

07 while placing their first member on a CHA

all-league team as Aaron Clarke was named to the

All-CHA 2nd Team. The Colonials advanced to the

CHA Tournament finals before falling to Alabama-

Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime.

In their inaugural season in 2004-05, the

Colonials finished with an 8-21-4 overall record.

Schooley and his staff would win their first ever

game at Canisius on October 22, 2004 by the

score of 3-1. The Colonials would finish in 3rd

place at the 2004 Rensselaer Holiday Hockey

Tournament with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart.

In 2005-06, the Colonials increased their win

total to twelve wins. The Colonials fourth place

finish in the CHA included a win at Schooley’s

alma mater Western Michigan (CCHA) along with

a win against Princeton (ECAC) and the Colonials

first ever playoff win over Air Force in the CHA

quarterfinals.

Prior to coming to Robert Morris, Schooley

spent five years at the Air Force Academy. He was

an assistant coach for four years before spending

one season as an Associate Head Coach with Air

Force. Before arriving at Air Force, Schooley spent

a season as an assistant coach with Cornell during

the 1997-98 season.

Schooley started his coaching career with the

Chicago Freeze of the North American Hockey

League in 1997 as an assistant coach and director

of scouting.

Schooley has been a head coach at the USA

Hockey Select 14, 15, 16 and 17 Festivals. He

also has spoken at numerous USA Hockey youth

coaching clinics as well as the USA Hockey

Masters Coaching Clinic. In August of 2002,

Schooley gained international coaching experience

as he was named an assistant coach of the United

States Under-18 Select Team, which placed fifth in

the Junior World Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic,

and Piestany, Slovakia.

Following his graduation from Western

Michigan, Schooley played for the Huntington

Blizzard of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL)

during the 1994-95 season. In 66 games, he

scored 18 points and compiled 151 penalty

minutes. During the 1995-96 campaign, Schooley

spent part of the season with the Blizzard before

joining the Flint (Mich.) Generals, where he helped

the team to a Colonial Hockey League (CoHL)

regular season and playoff championship.

A 1994 graduate of Western Michigan

University with a Bachelor of Science degree

in Communications, Schooley was a four-year

letterwinner as a defenseman with the Broncos. As

a senior during the 1993-94 campaign, he tallied

23 assists and scored 27 points in 40 games,

earning Central Collegiate Hockey Association

(CCHA) Defensive Player of the Week honors Feb

4, 1994. Also during the 1993-94 campaign he

was given the KOHA Grinder of the Year award and

led the Broncos in plus-minus ratio with a +22.

Mark WorkMan associate Head coach | 5th season at rMu; st. scholastica ’93

mark Workman is behind the bench for his

fifth season with the Colonials after spending

six seasons as an assistant coach at Brown

University. This will be Workman’s first season as

an associate head coach with Robert Morris after

spending his first four seasons as an assistant

coach for RMU. As a former top assistant for

Brown and a head coach at St. Scholastica for

six seasons, Workman adds a great deal of

experience and knowledge to the Robert Morris

hockey program.

“Mark brings a lot of experience to our program

as a Ivy League Assistant Coach and a Division III

Head Coach,” said head coach Derek Schooley.

“He is a very knowledable hockey guy with strong

recruiting connections and very good references

not only as a coach but a person. We are very

fortunate to have added Mark to our staff.”

The Colonials’ defensive efforts under Workman

really took stride in the past few seasons. In 2011-

12, the team’s penalty kill was ranked #1 in the

nation by season’s end as Robert Morris was able

to kill off 89.8 percent of the penalties they took

in the season. Last season, the Colonials led the

NCAA with nine shorthanded goals.

While at Brown, Workman was responsible

for player development, video scouting, game

strategies, conditioning programs and bench

management while overseeing the team’s

defensive corps. Under Workman’s guidance, one

Brown player received All-American distinction

and five were named Academic All-Americans.

In 2004, the Bears were led by NHL goalie Yann

Danis, a Hobey Baker finalist, as they won the Ivy

League Championship.

Workman served as the Assistant Coach at his

alma mater, St. Scholastica, from 1993-1995,

and was the Head Coach for St. Scholastica from

1995-2001, coaching five All-League Players in

six years and 45 All-Academic players. Workman

has also served as an NCAA representative at

the 2000 and 2001 Division III Men’s Ice Hockey

Quarterfinal Games, and on the NCAA Division III

Men’s Ice Hockey West Region Ranking Committee

from 1998-2001.

Over the past few years, Workman has coached

at the Minnesota Model Camp. For the past nine

years, Workman has worked with the US Hockey

Select program, Workman was a Head Coach at

the US Select 14 Festival.

Workman was a four-year varsity player at

St. Scholastica, serving as the team’s Assistant

Captain as a junior and as the Captain as a senior

in 1993. He earned the team’s Most Improved

Player Award in 1992 and the Coaches’ Award in

1993, while playing in 105 of 107 games, on the

blueline.

Workman, a Stillwater, Minnesota native,

received a B A in Exercise Science from the

College of St. Scholastica in 1993.

MaTT nIcHolson associate Head coach | 5th season at rMu; colgate ’04

matt nicholson is entering his fifth year as

a member of the Robert Morris men’s hockey

coaching staff. After four seasons as an assistant

coach, this will be Nicholson’s first as an associate

head coach.

“Matt is a very passionate young coach that has

an excellent personality. He has been successful

wherever he has been and continues to make our

players better with his skill development drills,”

RMU head coach Derek Schooley said. “Matt is a

young up and coming coach that we are lucky to

have.”

Since joining the Colonials, Nicholson has

worked with both the RMU defense and forwards

while also handling skill development, recruiting

and video responsibilities. In 2012-13, Nicholson

was part of a Robert Morris coaching staff that

guided the Colonials to a program-best 20-14-4

record.

Nicholson joined the Robert Morris coaching

staff after coaching two years at Division III Adrian

College. A start up program in the 2007-08

season, Adrian College went on to win MCHA

regular season and playoff championships

during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons for a

combined record of 53-4-1.

While at Colgate, the London, Ontario native

played 123 games and recorded two career goals

and 10 assists. After graduation, he participated in

the Phoenix Coyote’s NHL Rookie camp and went

on to sign with the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs

of the Central Hockey League (CHL) for the

2004-05 season. In 2005-06, Nicholson joined

the Youngstown Steelhounds of the CHL for his

final professional season before his career was cut

short due to injury.

While coaching at Adrian, Nicholson started his

own charitable foundation, “The Matt Nicholson

Foundation.” The organization is dedicated to

serving programs that promote athletics as a

positive outlet for local youth.

Nicholson earned his bachelor’s degree in

education at Colgate in 2004 and added a

master’s degree in instructional leadership and

decision making from Robert Morris in 2011. He

has a Level 4 USA hockey certification and has

spoken at numerous USA Hockey events.

Kody Van RenteRgem Hockey operations Coordinator | 3rd season at RmU; Fredonia State ’12

Kody Van Rentergem is in his second season as

a hockey operations coordinator with the Colonial

program.

“We are very pleased to add Kody to our staff.

His experiences at Fredonia State under Jeff

Meridith make him an excellent person to fill our

hockey operations coordinator position. He will be

a tremendous addition to our staff and a great help

to our players. “

Van Rentergem comes to Robert Morris after

serving as a team assistant at SUNY Fredonia. In

his time there, Kody served as the goaltending

coach and held many responsibilities during the

recruitment process for Fredonia State.

Before his off-the-ice duties at SUNY Fredonia,

Van Rentergem played for the Blue Devils for three

seasons as their goaltender. During his career,

Kody amassed the second best save percentage

and third best goals against average in school

history.

Prior to college, Van Rentergem played junior

hockey in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with

the Brooks Bandits and also spent a year with the

La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior

Hockey League.

Off the ice, Van Rentergem assisted in the

“Learn to Play” program at Fredonia State. This

program acclimated kids in the area to the sport of

hockey while also involving the Blue Devils in some

community service initiatives. He also conducted a

weekly goaltending camp during his final years of

junior hockey in Brooks, Alberta where he involved

both players and parents increase their knowledge

of the goaltending position.

2013-14: a season To reMeMber

The 2013-14 season already set up as a

milestone for the Robert morris University

men’s hockey program before a single shift was

played, if only because it was the 10th year of

NCAA Division I play for the Colonials.

For a while, it appeared that the anniversary

would be the only thing worth celebrating, as

RMU stumbled to a 2-12-2 record to start the

season. However, the Colonials promptly put 2013

behind them, posting an 11-4-3 mark from Jan. 4

through the start of the Atlantic Hockey Association

tournament.

That impressive stretch included a five-game

winning streak and an RMU-record nine-game

unbeaten run (7-0-2) that spanned from Jan.

10 through Feb. 8, but it didn’t stop in the

postseason. After sneaking past Army in a tense

three-game first-round series at 84 Lumber Arena,

the Colonials swept UConn on the road to reach

the AHA semifinal for the first time in four years.

RMU continued to break new ground at Blue

Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y., surviving a wild

third period to down Niagara 5-4 in sudden-

death overtime. Coach Derek Schooley’s team

completed its championship chase the following

night with a rollicking 7-4 victory over Canisius in

the AHA final.

The party was on in the Empire State, but

RMU had just six days to regroup for their

inaugural NCAA Tournament game, a battle with

No. 1 Minnesota in the West Regional Semifinal.

Despite falling behind 4-0 in the Golden Gophers’

backyard at Xcel Energy Center, the Colonials

closed within two goals twice in the third period of

an eventual 7-3 defeat.

The season-ending loss stung, but that

feeling didn’t last nearly as long as the sense of

accomplishment that soon took hold.

“We never quit,” said Schooley after the

Colonials’ banner season. “I’m really proud of our

hockey team. This is all about the players and how

hard they played in the second half and how much

they believed in what we set out to accomplish.”

n Junior forward Cody Wydo established RMU

single-season records for goals (31) and points

(54), earning all-Atlantic Hockey first-team

honors in addition to a spot on the United States

College Hockey Online (USCHO) second team.

The Michigan native ranked fourth in Division I in

points and second in goals, earning a spot on the

Hobey Baker Award ballot. Wydo was AHA player

of the month for March, when he netted AHA

tournament MVP for scoring 12 points (7g, 5a) in

the postseason.

n Sophomore Pittsburgh native Zac Lynch tied

for the D-I lead in shorthanded goals with four,

part of his breakout 47-point season. The forward

led the Colonials with 28 assists and finished the

academic year with a 4.0 grade-point average, an

accomplishment that led to his placement on the

CoSIDA Academic All-America third team, the first

RMU men’s hockey player to be honored in that

way. Lynch also set a program record with 159

shots on goal.

n Sophomore goalie terry Shafer found himself

on the all-AHA third team after posting a .911

save percentage and two shutouts in his first

season as RMU’s No. 1 goalie. Although Shafer

was injured in the first-round playoff series against

Army, freshman Dalton izyk stepped in to help

the Colonials to the conference title, putting up

a .941 save percentage in the AHA tournament.

Izyk was named conference goalie of the month

for March.

n The Colonials’ 6-1 burst through the AHA

playoffs earned three spots on the conference’s

all-tournament team: Wydo, Izyk and sophomore

forward Greg Gibson, who finished RMU’s title

run on a five-game scoring streak (4g, 2a).

n Junior forward Scott Jacklin scored 38 total

points to finish third on the team. He had 15 goals,

with none bigger than his overtime tally against

Niagara in an AHA semifinal matchup, which

clinched a spot in RMU’s third-ever conference

championship contest.

n Robert Morris finished the season as the

seventh-highest scoring team in Division I, netting

3.45 goals per game overall. After the start of

2014, the Colonials were the most accurate

snipers in top-tier college hockey with 101 goals

in 26 games, an average of 3.88 per outing.

n For the third year in a row, RMU set the

classroom standard in Atlantic Hockey, with a

conference-best 25 players named to the AHA

all-academic team. Seniors andrew Blazek, Jimmy Geerin, evan Renwick and Colin South

each earned their fourth consecutive all-academic

selections, pacing the Colonials’ 18 repeat

honorees – the top total in the conference.

Hofacre announces Robert Morris will become the sixth

The Colonials earn their first point in College Hockey

America, tying Wayne State, 1-1, at home. Logan

Bittle had the winning goal while Christian Boucher

Christian Boucher makes 33 saves as Robert Morris

picks up its first shutout. Mercyhurst and RMU play

to a 0-0 tie at the RMU Island Sports Center with

the Colonials outshooting the Lakers, 39-33. Mike

Ella had 39 saves for Mercyhurst.

Robert Morris beats Wayne State, 4-3 in overtime,

to pick up its first conference win. Brett Hopfe and

The Colonials post their first win over a team from the

CCHA, upending Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich.,

5-2. Brett Hopfe has two goals and an assist as the

Colonials score three power play goals in the game.

February 4, 2006

The first two-game series sweep comes with a 3-2 win

over Air Force. Robert Morris wins the first game of the

series, 5-2. Sean Berkstresser tallies four points on a

goal and three assists in the series.

Morris as the 20th best team in the nation. USCHO.com

Championship Tournament game, losing 1-5 to

Mercyhurst in the first round. Robert Morris finished the

Robert Morris alums Nathan Longpre, Denny Urban

and Dave Cowan become the first Colonials to earn

invitations to NHL main training camps. Longpre caught

on with the Vancouver Canucks organization while Urban

and Cowan both worked out with the Toronto Maple

Leafs.

Senior goaltender Eric Levine recorded 51 saves while

freshman forward Brandon Denham picked up his first

career goal as the Colonials defeated No. 5 Miami 1-0

to capture the inaugural Three Rivers Classic. Levine

was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after

making 99 saves in the two-day tournament.

The Colonials earned their first national ranking since the

2010-11 season entering the USCHO.com poll at No. 19.

RMU earned 120 points in the poll after defeating No. 5

Miami to win the Three Rivers Classic.

January 3, 2013

A graduate of the 2010-2011 senior class at Robert

Morris University, defenseman Denny Urban started

his professional hockey career later that year with the

Reading Royals of the East Coast Hockey League. Now

in his third season of professional hockey, Urban was

named a starter for the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game. Urban

did not participate in the contest due to his promotion to

the Worcester Sharks of the AHL.

February 14, 2013

Senior captain Brendan Jamison was chosen by a media

committee as one of ten finalists for the 2012-13 Senior

CLASS Award. An acronym for “Celebrating Loyalty

and Achievement for Staying in School” the Senior

CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and

encourages students to use their platform in athletics to

make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Jamison and the fellow members of his senior class have

all taken the initiative with the “RMU Hockey Krushes

Cancer” campaign to benefit former teammate and

captain Chris Kushneriuk.

ranked Niagara at the 84 Lumber Arena in overtime with

a game-winning goal by Colin South. South’s second

goal of the evening would come in overtime while RMU

was on the power play.

Goaltender Eric Levine set a program record with his

16th victory of the season in a 4-2 victory over Canisius.

Levine would record 41 saves, including 18 in the third

period, in his eighth 40-save game of the season.

In the opening game of the AHA playoffs, the Colonials

set a new program record with their 19th win of the

season after a 4-1 victory against Sacred Heart.

A 6-1 victory over Sacred Heart in the first round of

the AHA playoffs would double as the 20th win of the

season for Robert Morris. With the victory, the Colonials

advanced to the quarterfinals for the second-consecutive

season.

Forward Adam Brace was named to the All-AHA Second

Team after a 41-point season for the Colonials. Brace

surpassed 100 career points in his senior campaign

after scoring 14 goals and recording 27 assists. Brace

became just one of four Colonials to record at least 40

Head coach Derek Schooley has tabbed Colin South as

the next team captain for the Colonials as they prepare

for their tenth season. South served as an assistant

captain during his junior season.

Senior defenseman and assistant captain Tyler Hinds

became the first Colonial in program history to earn

Capital One District II Academic All-America honors as he

was named to the District II At-Large First Team.

RMU once again welcomed some of college hockey’s

best to Consol Energy Center for the Three Rivers

Classic. Although the Colonials dropped a pair of 3-2

decisions to Penn State and Bowling Green, respectively,

nationally-ranked Boston College rolled to the

tournament title.

The Colonials defeat RIT 5-1, improving to 7-0-2 since

Jan. 10 and 9-1-2 in calendar year 2014. RMU’s nine-

game unbeaten streak established a new program record

in 10 seasons of play, edging the old mark of eight set by

the 2010-11 team.

Colonials advance In Atlantic Hockey playoffs again

With a 3-1 win over Army at 84 Lumber Arena in Game

3 of an AHA first-round series, RMU advanced to the

conference quarterfinals for the third season in the row.

Freshman goalie Dalton Izyk stepped in for injured starter

Terry Shafer and shut out the Black Knights for the final

two periods.

Following a regular season that saw him score a

conference-high 23 goals, junior forward Cody Wydo was

named to the All-Atlantic Hockey First Team. He added

17 assists for a 40-point regular season, becoming the

fifth Colonial to ever reach that milestone. Sophomore

goalie Terry Shafer was named to the Third Team after

posting a .919 save percentage in AHA play, including

two shutouts. RMU went 13-7-5 in conference play when

Shafer was the goalie of record.

For the first time in four seasons as a member of the

conference, Robert Morris advanced to the Atlantic

Hockey semifinal round, ousting UConn in two games

at Storrs, Conn. In the process, the Colonials avenged a

two-game loss to the host Huskies in the previous year’s

best-of-three quarterfinal series.

After edging Niagara on a Scott Jacklin overtime goal in

the previous night’s semifinal, the Colonials outgunned

Canisius 7-4 in the winner-take-all AHA Championship

game to clinch the programs first conference title

and NCAA Tournament berth. Cody Wydo was named

tournament MVP after scoring four goals and one assist

over the weekend, including a hat trick in the title tilt.

Greg Gibson and Dalton Izyk were also named to the AHA

all-tournament team.

Although the Colonials fell 7-3 to top-ranked Minnesota

in a West Regional Semifinal, they proved they belonged

on the national stage by rallying from a 4-0 deficit to pull

within 5-3 with five minutes to play at Xcel Energy Center

in St. Paul. Cody Wydo set the program record with his

65th career goal, and goalie Dalton Izyk made 41 saves.

RMU finished the season on a 17-6-3 run after the New

Year, a surge that helped garner votes in the final two

USCHO polls of the season. The Colonials earned 55

votes in the final ballot, coming up just shy of a top-20

ranking.

Cody Wydo charted new territory in the 10-year history

of the RMU program by being named to the all-USCHO

Second Team. Wydo netted 54 points while playing in all

42 games during the 2013-14 season, finishing fourth

on the NCAA Division I scoring list. The Michigan native

scored 31 goals, the second most in D-I behind Hobey

Baker Award winner Johnny Gaudreau. Wydo was one

of just two AHA players recognized by the USCHO with

placement on any of its all-star teams.

Coach Derek Schooley announced that Cody Wydo

Colin South. Wydo served as an assistant captain for the

2013-14 campaign.

June 5, 2014

Shortly after being recognized by his teammates as

RMU’s Most Improved Player, sophomore forward

Zac Lynch was named to the Capital One Academic

All-America Third Team, a first for the men’s hockey

program. Lynch, a native Pittsburgher who majors in

manufacturing engineering, compiled a perfect 4.0

grade-point average during the academic year. He

became just the eighth RMU student-athlete ever to

make an Academic All-America squad. Lynch was

second on the Colonials – and ninth nationally – with

47 points in 2013-14.

Although the NHL’s Winter Classic began in 2007 when the Pittsburgh Penguins

headed to Buffalo to face the Sabres on New Year’s Day, college hockey actually got

the jump on the pros when it comes to skating outdoors.

On Oct. 6, 2001, Michigan and Michigan State played to a 3-3 tie at Spartan

Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan, in what was billed as the Cold War. Although

more than 74,000 curious spectators were in attendance, almost five years passed

before college hockey took it outside again, when Wisconsin and Ohio State battled at

Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Since 2010, however, there have been 37 outdoor NCAA hockey games, including

17 during the 2013-14 season alone. Of the 39 contests played al fresca, 32 have

been men’s games and 26 have featured Division I opponents.

Robert Morris will become the 24th Division I men’s hockey team and the ninth

Atlantic Hockey Association member to play outside when it takes on Bowling Green

on Jan. 3, 2015 at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio, home of minor-league baseball’s

Mudhens franchise.

The game is part of the Toledo Walleye’s Winterfest celebration, which will also see

the local ECHL club play twice and Division III Adrian (Mich.) College face the United

States Development Program’s Under-18 team.

Fenway Park in Boston has hosted the most D-I men’s outdoor games (10), while

Michigan has braved the elements an NCAA-high six times. Here’s a full list of all the

rMu a WelcoMIng HosT for college Hockey’s besT

Since 2007, Robert Morris has been a willing and welcoming host to some

of college hockey’s best programs, whether it be at the old Mellon Arena or

Consol Energy Center.

Either way, the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins have been gracious in giving

their home ice over to the Colonials several times, a tradition that has evolved

from the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase to the Three Rivers Classic.

RMU is 4-6-1 on the Penguins’ home ice over the years, with a pair of

wins over nationally-ranked University of Miami teams highlighting that

record. The Colonials downed No. 1 Miami in 2010 at Mellon Arena and

capped the first Three Rivers Classic with a championship-game shutout of

the No. 5 Red Hawks in 2012.

After a record-setting season as a junior, forward Cody Wydo was tabbed as

the next captain of the Robert Morris University men’s ice hockey team in an

announcement made by head coach Derek Schooley.

“Cody is a skilled athlete who works extremely hard and leads through

the example he sets,” said Schooley. “He was a part of the successful

leadership group last season that overcame a lot of challenges to advance

to the NCAA Tournament. I am sure that he will take those lessons learned

from previous captains to be an outstanding and successful leader.”

Wydo, who served as an assistant captain during the 2013-14 campaign,

will fill the leadership void left by departed senior Colin South, who

captained the Colonials to their first Atlantic Hockey Championship and

NCAA Tournament berth in the program’s 10th season.

In his junior campaign, Wydo surpassed 100 career points to become

the fourth Colonial in program history to reach the milestone and first to do

so in just three seasons. Wydo also set the program’s career scoring mark

with his 65th goal coming against Minnesota in the NCAA West Regional

Semifinals.

To go along with the career marks set by Wydo, he also established new

RMU single-season bests with 31 goals and 54 points.

“Any time you have the opportunity to lead a team, you need to do the

best that you possibly can to step in and fill the role that has been built by

the previous captains,” said Wydo. “It helps a lot that I was able to be an

assistant captain this past season and it give me a foundation to build on as

the team moves forward next year.”

Wydo becomes the 10th captain in program history, joining the following

list of Colonial leaders:

Division I men’s hockey, 45 former Colonials have gone on to play hockey

professionally - including 24 who were active in 2013-14. Five former

Colonials have attended NHL training camps: Denny Urban (Maple Leafs
