UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN • 2014-15 CHARGER WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

FollowingitsfirstappearanceintheNCAApostseasonsince2007, the University of New Haven women’s basketball team en-ters the 2014-15 campaign looking to make a return trip to the national stage. The Chargers return four starters and seven total returnersfromthatsquad,whichfinished18-10lastwinter.NewHavenwillalsowelcomefivenewcomersinthesecondseasonfor Head Coach Ty Grace ’99.

Expectations have grown alongside the recent rise of the pro-gram, as the Blue and Gold were tabbed as the Southwest Divi-sion favorite in the Northeast-10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Chargers also received votes in the preseason edition of the USA TODAY Sports NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.

THE BACKCOURTLeading a talented group of returners is senior Aquillin Hayes. An Honorable Mention All-America selection by the WBCA and the Women’s Division II Bulletin, Hayes led the Chargers with 15.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game last winter. The North-east-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year also picked up 27 blocks and 30 steals while typically defending the opposi-tion’s primary offensive weapon. Hayes amassed 10 double-doubles on the season. She enters her senior season ranks second all-time in blocked shots at New Haven with 97 career send-backs and could reach both the 1,000-point and 1,000-re-bound milestones.

A three-year starter on the wing, Bria Moore enters her senior season poised to join the Chargers’ 1,000-Point Club. The local

product from West Haven has netted 939 points in her career after averaging 11.4 points per game in 2013-14. Moore shot a team-best 39.4 percent from three-point range while knocking down 28 triples and collecting 6.0 rebounds per contest. She is currently among New Haven’s all-time leaders in career free throw and three-point shooting percentage.

Elizabeth Cruso saw an increased role at the point position as a junior, and that will only expand more in 2014-15. Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction, publishedbytheUniversityof

South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field,ofmorethan6,000studentathletes.Amongthe many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’sbasketball, women’scrosscountry, fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’ssoccer, women’strackandfield, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

The conference is coming off a banner season in 2013-14, as the Northeast-10 saw three teams claim national championships. First, the Southern New Hampshire University men’s soccer program won the NCAA Championship this past December, followed by the Bentley University women’sbasketballteamclaimingitsfirst-ever

title in March to cap an undefeated season. The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse program made it No. 3 after defeating Lock Haven, 7-5, in the title game in May.

A pair of Southern Connecticut State University student-athletes also won national championhips this past winter, as Nick Lebron won the individual national title in the haptathlon at the 2014 Men’s NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Track & Field ChampionshipandRaymondCswerkofinishedfirstinthe400IMatthe2014NCAADivisionIIMen’s Swimming & Diving Championship.

From thefieldofplay to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. An astounding 138 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 184 reached the benchmark in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors, as its fundraising donations for Make-A-Wish is more than any other Division II conference in the country the past decade. The conference also announced a formal partnership last fall with Team IMPACT, anon-profitorganizationthatmatcheschildrenwith life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Currently, more than 40 Northeast-10 programs are currently matched with a Team IMPACT child.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 34 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in theclassroom.
