Why the “Vandals”? Don’t use your dictionary to find Idaho’s defini-tion of a Vandal. No, Idaho’s student-athletes go by a name earned nearly a century ago by a basket-ball team coach by Hec Edmundson, whose teams played defense with such intensity and ferocity that sports writers said they “vandalized” their opponents. The mark made by that 1917 team went far deeper than wins and losses on the court. In 1917, Harry Lloyd “Jazz” McCarty - a writer for the student-newspaper, the Argonaut - subtly tagged the team with a new nickname in a pregame write-up: “The opening game with Whitman will mark a new epoch in Idaho basketball history, for the present gang of ‘Vandals’ have the best material that has ever car-ried the ‘I’ into action.” McCarty’s indirect suggestion stuck. In 1921, McCarty and Edward Maslin Hulme, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, succeeded in their push to have Vandals officially adopted as the nickname for Idaho teams. Adding a special touch were Edmundson’s roots. He was from Moscow and made a name for himself at Idaho as one of the nation’s top distance runners. He eventually left Idaho to coach at the University of Washington, where the Huskies still play basketball in the building bearing his name - the Edmundson Pavilion.

JEFFBEAMANMen’s Head CoachAlabama A&M, 2000Ninth Season

Jeff Beaman joined the University of Idaho tennis program as head coach of both the men’s and women’s teams in August of 2006, and since 2008 has served as the Director of Tennis and the head men’s tennis coach. Beaman coached both the men and women’s teams from 2007-08 and 2014.

Beaman is a six-time Coach of the Year, earning the recognition from the Big Sky for the men in 2015, Western Athletic Conference in 2013 for the men, and 2014 for both the men and women, along with ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year honors for the men in 2011 and the women in 2014.

Beaman took both Vandal programs to the 2014 NCAA tournament by winning WAC tournament championships on both sides. It was the first conference championship in the history of the women’s program and the first for the men since winning the Big Sky in 1978.

The Idaho women achieved a program-best No. 51 national ranking during its 11-match win streak under Beaman in 2014, and went 19-6 on the season.

Beaman increased Idaho’s win total in each of his first four seasons coaching the Vandal men, peaking with 22 wins in 2010 after taking over a program that won just two matches in 2006, going 2-22. Beaman led the Idaho men to their first top-50 national ranking when the Vandals were ranked as high as No. 46 in 2011.

Beaman has taken the Vandals to three straight WAC championship matches, falling to Fresno State in 2012 and Den-ver in 2013 before winning the program’s first WAC Championship over New Mexico State in 2014.Beaman came to Idaho after serving as an assistant men’s coach at Texas Christian University for one season. In his time at TCU, he helped the Horned Frogs earn a 2006 Mountain West Conference crown, a trip into the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 31 national ranking. Two of the players from that team also earned All-America honors.

Beaman’s first stop as a full-time head coach came at Barton County (Kan.) Community College, where was the head men’s and women’s tennis coach from 2000-03. From 2001-03, he guided the men’s program to three straight top-five finishes in the final NJCAA rankings. The team was second overall in both 2001 and 2002 and fourth in 2003. His wom-en’s team finished the 2003 season ranked third in NJCAA. Overall, he coached six ITA All-Americans and 10 NJCAA All-Americans at Barton County. In 2003, he was also nominated for the Barton County Community College Difference Award.

After Barton County, Beaman moved on to the College of Santa Fe, where he started as an assistant in 2004 and eventually was named head coach in 2005. In the inaugural year of the program in 2004, he helped lead the Spin to a No. 5 national ranking and a quarterfinal appearance at the NAIA national tournament. The team also featured three All-Americans and the NAIA Player of the Year, Ivan Angulo. In 2005, he led the team to a No. 1 final ranking in NAIA and helped five of his players achieve All-America status. Following the season, he was named Coach of the Year for

2015 IDAHO WOMEN’S TENNIS

SCHEDULE AND RESULTS

The Big Sky Conference crowned a new women’s tennis cham-pion for the first time in 13 years in 2015. The No. 2 seeded Vandals defeated No. 1 Sacramento State in nail-biting fashion to earn their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

All eyes were focused on the No. 6 singles match to close the championship. Sacramento State’s Olivia Boija took the first set, 3-6, over Idaho’s Lucia Badillos. Badillos stormed back in the second with a 7-5 win, forcing a third set. With the other five singles matches concluded, the match was in the hands of the Idaho freshman. Badillos stood tall, getting out to a 5-3 advan-tage. She secured Idaho’s second straight conference champi-onship, taking the final set 6-3.

“Having a freshman be able to handle that pressure for us was amazing,” head coach Mariana Cobra said. “She lost the first set and was down 4-1 in the second at one point. For her to be able to stay in the match and keep fighting was amazing.”

Idaho began the day behind the eight ball for the second con-secutive match. Sacramento State took the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and 3 courts.

“When we went down 1-0 things did not look so great for us,” Cobra explained. “The girls did a great job of staying on the court as long as they could. We knew we had a chance but we had to put our self in that situation. The way the team com-peted today was unbelievable.”

The Silver and Gold immediately struck back in singles play, taking a 2-1 lead thanks to Emmie Marx and Rita Bermudez. Marx took on Sac State’s Anna-Maria Nau on the No. 2 court. She closed out the match in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) to even the match at one-all. Bermudez scored a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jennifer Ong in No. 4 singles.

Sacramento State picked up two of the match’s next three points. Deimante Bulatovaite defeated Sophie Vickers in straight sets, 4-6, 5-7. Belen Barcenilla got the point back for Idaho on the No. 5 court. She outlasted Ana Loaiza Esquivias in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5. The Hornets tied the match at three-all with Alina Solitanici’s 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Galina Bykova in No. 1 singles.

“We had been through some adversity this season but the girls have stuck through everything,” Cobra added. “Knowing that they [Sacramento State] have won the past 13 years says some-thing about us. I could not have been prouder.”

The win gave Idaho its second women’s tennis championship in program history. The Vandals won the Western Athletic Confer-

ence in 2014.

The Vandals drew No. 6 UCLA in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The tournament’s seventh seeded Bruins took the match, 4-0, on its way to its second straight NCAA Championship match appearance.

“This was an amazing season for us,” head coach Mariana Cobra commented. “I am so proud of how we competed the entire year. UCLA was a highly ranked team for a reason.”

SCHEDULE AND RESULTS

Odon Barta and Coach Beaman were both honored by the Big Sky. Barta took home Conference MVP, while Bea-man was voted Coach of the Year.

VANDALS CAPTURE 11TH BIG SKY CROWN

The Idaho Vandals captured its second consecu-tive conference championship with a 4-2 win over No. 6 Northern Arizona. The win marked the program’s 11th Big Sky championship and first since 1978.

“I am very proud of how the guys played,” head coach Jeff Beaman said. “We had to change our mentality a little bit after losing out on the doubles point. We talked about competing and every player came out [in singles] and did what they needed to.”

The No. 2 Vandals stumbled out of the gate to start. Northern Arizona, coming off an upset of top-seeded We-ber State on Saturday, claimed the doubles point and the early lead. Idaho fell on the No. 1 and 2 doubles courts, 6-8, 5-8, respectively.

Jackson Varney began the Idaho turnaround. He scored the first Vandal point of the match with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Felix Schumann on the No. 5 court. NAU re-gained the one-point lead with Adi Zilberstein’s win over Alberto Sanz (1-6, 1-6), playing at the No. 6 position.

Idaho shifted into fifth gear in the face of adversity. Down in the match 2-1, the Vandals ripped off three con-secutive wins to ensure a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Cristobal Ramos Salazar evened the match with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Kester Black at the No. 3 line. Idaho gained its first lead of the match thanks to Mark Kovacs’ play. He defeated Eden Peleg on the No. 4 court with a pair of 6-2 set-wins. Felipe Fonseca punched Idaho’s ticket to the NCAA Tournament on the No. 2 court. He and Alexandre Locci split the first two sets (6-4, 3-6), forcing a third-set tiebreaker. Fonseca closed the door on Locci and the Lumberjacks with a 6-2 final-set win.

“Felipe had an amazing freshman year, capping it off with a huge win,” Beaman added. “He was playing with everything on the line and was able to win the clincher.”

The No. 1 match between Odon Barta and Jordan Gobatie was left unfinished.

Idaho was next faced with a rematch of the 2014 NCAA Tournament, playing No. 7 seeded Southern Cali-fornia. USC ended the Vandals’ season for the second year in a row with a 4-0 defeat.

Construction was completed on the six Memorial Gym Courts and the four courts available on the Administration Lawn. “The completion of the four Admin Lawn courts as well as the upgrades at the Memorial Gym courts are a huge boost for our tennis program,” Idaho Director of Tennis Jeff Beaman said. “This will not only benefit our program but will also be an asset to Moscow and the surrounding tennis communities.” Construction began in May of 2009 on the courts on the Administrative Lawn and was completed in June. Attention then shifted to the Memorial Gym courts where upgrades were completed in Septem-ber and the final surface coat was applied in October to complete the project. “They really did a great job, not only on the playing surface but by putting in four very attractive courts in the picturesque Admin lawn setting,” Beaman said. “The Memorial Gym court upgrades were extremely well done and have added to the courts already in that location.” The men’s and women’s teams now have ten courts available to play competitive matches. Prior to the renovations the team was only able to play competitive matches on three of the courts. “Going from three playable courts to ten gives us the ability to host home matches, WAC events and fall tournaments in the future,” Beaman said. “Ten courts will also have the benefit of running more effective team practices, providing upgraded facilities for HPERD classes, intramurals and use by Idaho students, facility and staff. The upgrades to the outdoor tennis courts are another example of the increased commitment to high quality facilities by the Idaho administration and athletic department. “I would especially like to thank Rob Spear for his role in getting these courts done,” Beaman said. “This project along with the Kibbie Dome renovations and the many other things happening right now and on the near horizon, are making Idaho Athletics into a premier athletic program.”

The Kibbie-ASUI Activity Center, also called the “Kibbie Dome,” is one of the unique facilities in all of the NCAA. The Kibbie Dome has been home of Vandal Athletics since 1975, when the barrel-arch roof was completed. In 1976, the building earned the award for America’s Outstanding Structural Engineering Achievement. It took nearly seven years to complete the structure, which is tall enough to fit Idaho’s Theophilus Tower inside. Construction began in 1969 on the site of the former Neale Stadium, which had partially been destroyed by fire. The field and stands were completed in 1971, but it took four more years to fin-ish the unique roof. The east end addition, which includes the athletic department offices, locker rooms, training rooms and a weight room, was completed in 1982. In 2004, the facility began its next phase of improvement, as enhanced academic and athletic sup-port facilities were added for student athletes. The Norm and Becky Iverson Speed and Strength Center was added, more than doubling the size of the previous weight room to 7,000 square feet. Locker rooms were also expanded to over 14,000 square feet. Team meeting rooms, two student athlete computer labs, study rooms and expanded academic support areas have also been added. Additional expansions are also planned for the near future. The Kibbie Dome is the indoor facility for Vandal men’s and women’s tennis. Idaho tennis also uses the dome to train in the winter and during times of inclement weather. The building also hosts football, basketball and track and field. The floor can be cleared for action on three courts which have been resurfaced as recent as 2011.

CITY OF MOSCOW

Moscow is the perfect example of the old adage: Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Small though it may be, Moscow has plenty to offer. More than 130 years after it was settled, Moscow is a

small yet vibrant community with a penchant for the arts and the University of Idaho.

Every year people come from around the world to take part in events such as the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival or the Renaissance Fair. So much so, the city was named one of the top 100 small art towns in America.

The city’s 22,000 residents are a bright and diverse group of people. The city offers many of the advantages of a big city while retaining its small town friendliness. Crime in Moscow is almost non-existent.

For entertainment, choices abound whether they be indoor or out.

Outdoor lovers might believe they’ve landed in paradise. Since Moscow is nestled between the rolling hills of the Palouse on one side and Moscow Mountain on the other, opportunities abound for outdoor entertainment. Camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hunting and fishing locales can all be found within a few short miles from town.

If you’re the sort who prefers more urban forms of entertainment Moscow offers a broad assortment of activities typical of a small town influenced largely by its resident university. Add to those, a variety of theatrical presentations and concerts on the Idaho campus, and just about every choice of entertainment can be found.

At 2,500 feet above sea level, Moscow has a mild climate despite it being located in the northern United States. Temperatures rarely drop below 24 degrees during the winter and the summer months won’t get much hotter than 87 degrees for a pleasant year-round climate.

• Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in the U.S. – 8,000 feet deep at some points. • Shoshone Falls (36 feet taller than Niagara falls)• Soda Springs (largest man-made geyser)• The Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho• The world famous Lava Hot Springs• The “Craters of the Moon” in south-central Idaho

• Sun Valley Resort, where the movie stars play• Coeur d’Alene, playground of the Pacific Northwest

• Bruneau Dunes, the largest sand dunes in North America

Geographically, Idaho is one of the most diverse in the country. From the rolling deserts of southern Idaho and the forested mountains of central Idaho to the rolling plains of the Palouse, this state has it all. If you’re into river rafting, Idaho has the Salmon River, nicknamed “The River of No Return.” If you like water sports, Idaho has more than 2,000 lakes with names, and many more without. One of the most famous is Pend

Oreille, which is more than 1,100 feet deep in some parts. The Navy has tested some of its submarines at Lake Pend Oreille.

Idaho is an outdoorsman’s dream come true. The state offers thousands of miles of trails for backpackers. Hunting and fishing locales are abundant all

over the state. Idaho is home to part of the famous Lewis and Clark Trail. You can learn first-hand how the expedition was saved from certain starvation

by the Nez Pierce Indian tribe. Idaho is the 13th largest state in the

nation, but is sparsely populated with 1.3 million residents. The benefit of this is low crime rates and a healthy lifestyle. Last but certainly not least, Idaho indeed does have great potatoes. In 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission was formed. The state-run agency’s re-sponsibilities include researching and

expanding the Idaho potato market.

Idaho was settled during the gold rush of the 1800s. Veins of silver and gold were found in the mountains of central Idaho and it wasn’t long before thousands of pioneers had settled all over the territory in an attempt to get rich. As the pioneers mined for gold, they happened upon a pleasant surprise. In addition to the silver and

gold, Idaho was abundant in gems such as topaz and jade. Hence Idaho’s nickname: the Gem State.

Idaho is one of the most scenic states in the nation. It holds claim to numerous world-famous sites. Here are just a few of the many wonders Idaho offers.

The University of Idaho opened its doors on Oct. 3, 1892, when it welcomed about 40 students and one professor, John Edwin Ostrander.

On June 11, 1896, the university graduated its first class when four students marched across a stage to receive their diplomas. Two years later, the university awarded its first graduate degree. By 1899, a growing body of University of Idaho alumni formed the Idaho Alumni Association.

Alumni numbers weren’t all that grew in those early days. Over the next few years, the University of Idaho established its College of Agriculture, dedicated Ridenbaugh Hall and established the Pacific Northwest’s first Department of Domestic Science (later to be called Home Economics).

The Administration Building fire in 1906 was a turning point in the university’s history. John Tourtellotte, a Boise architect who had designed the state’s capitol, designed a new Tudor Gothic structure to symbolize the university’s growth and maturity as a major institution of higher education.

The Administration Building remains the centerpiece of campus.

The hiring in 1908 of the nation’s premier landscape architects, Olmsted Brothers of Massachusetts whose firm’s founding father designed New York’s Central Park, led to the small-town New England look of the campus.

President Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. president to visit the campus in 1911. He planted the first tree in Presidential Grove.

Through the next 50 years, the campus continued to grow in size and academic offerings. Among the additions were Forney Hall, the School of Education, Science Hall, Hays Hall, the Music Building, the Library, the Student Union and outreach campus locations.

In 1976 the new ASUI-Kibbie Dome won a national engineering structural achievement award. Its sound structure

has with stood roaring cheers of Vandal fans (as well as the groans and wailings of rival teams) ever since.

Today, the university is home to over 12,000 students and nearly 1,300 faculty and staff. It continues to be a leading place of learning in Idaho and the West, because although it is ever-responsive to the changing needs of its students and society, it never forgets its roots and traditions.

Perhaps no better example of this distinct combination of rich history and innovative service is the Associated Students of the University of Idaho (ASUI). Today as vibrant as ever, ASUI has been a force on campus for more than 100 years.

Barrie Steele has been the head athletic trainer at Idaho since 1986. He oversees a full staff of certified athletic trainers and works hand-in-hand with Idaho’s team physicians: Dr. Steve Pennington, Dr. David Rych and Dr. Ed Tingstad.

Steele is a 2011 inductee into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame.

Van Amerongen joined the UI full-time staff in the fall of 2012 after a 5 year stint at the University of Montana. His responsibilities are men’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and assisting with football.

Van Amerongen graduated from the University of Illinois (Chicago) with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. While at UIC Toby competed for the Mens Gymnastics team and was a four year letter winner. In 2004 he earned his Master of Arts Degree in Instructional Leadership from Tennessee Technological University.

Van Amerongen was born and raised in Seattle, WA.

Idaho Athletic Training Philosophy StatementThe purpose of the Idaho athletic training room and its staff is for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. All student-athletes, regardless of sport affiliation, race or gender, have equal access to the training

room and the services provided therein.

Student-Athlete Support ServicesWith the number one goal being prevention, University of Idaho athletic services provides not only equipment, strength and conditioning and preventative athletic training measures, but coordinates with sports nutritionists and sports psychologists for the overall well-being of Vandal student-athletes.

“We approach our jobs first from a prevention standpoint,” head athletic trainer Barrie Steele said. “But injuries do occur in athletics and when they do, we make sure our student-athletes receive the finest in immediate and follow-up care. When they return to competition, our goal is to have them in better condition than before the injury and with a reduced chance of re-injury.”

Making the job easier for the Steele and the Idaho Student-Athlete Services staff was the total overhaul of the athletic training and equipment room areas over the summer of 2008. The locker rooms received a ‘facelift’ of new flooring and tiling, while two new individual team rooms, one new computer lab and one auditorium-style meeting room were also added.

After the renovation, the equipment room nearly doubled in size. Totally new washer/dryer systems cut hours out of cleaning times, while a new ‘cubby’ equipment system greatly streamlines the equipment check-out process. The athletic training area was also expanded greatly, with new offices, larger work areas, and private exam rooms. Then enhancements have given Idaho’s athletic trainers more room to work with and have greatly expanded its capabilities for in-house treatment and rehab.

Rob Spear assumed the lead of the University of Idaho athletic department during a crucial juncture in its storied history. The Vandals were seeking solidification of their conference status and their facilities were in need of modernization. They needed a leader with vision and passion. Spear fit the bill. First was securing a home in the Western Athletic Conference, a league that preserves historic rivalries and offers the benefits of a Division I association. Next was rebuilding the Vandals’ home. He was on hand to oversee the final stages of the construction of the Iverson Speed and Strength Center. Next were the playing surfaces – inside and out. The Vandals now have a SprinTurf practice facility outdoors and RealGrass Pro inside the Kibbie Dome. The football, men’s and women’s basketball, and swimming locker rooms were renovated into modern, stylish facilities for the student-athletes. Last fall, the athletic training and equipment rooms were renovated and state-of-the-art classrooms and meeting rooms came on line as part of a multi-million dollar facelift for the Kibbie Dome. Last fall, the first phase of a new-look Kibbie Dome debuted when the plywood on the west end wall was replaced with translucent panels. When the Vandals kickoff in 2011, not only will the east wall match the west but there will be a new club area with suites, loge boxes and a clubroom as well as premium seating and a new press box. Facilities are but one area where Spear has moved the department forward. He added to the support services staff to enhance the student-athleteexperience. Computer labs and academic support staff are cornerstones of a successful department and the additions and upgrades in those areas are paying dividends. In the fall of 2007, the Idaho Athletics Hall of Fame was established with 100 individuals and five teams being inducted over a two-year period as part of the inaugural class. His involvement isn’t limited to the Idaho campus. He began a second term with the NCAA’s ‘Legislative Council – one of two top-tier governing bodies in the organization. “I am honored and excited to represent the Western Athletic Conference on this governing board,” Spear said at the time of his appointment. “It is a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on future NCAA legislation to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to the student-athlete.” Spear’s ties with athletics are life-long. He was a standout high school athlete in his native Butte, Mont., before moving on to letter four times at the University of Great Falls. Next was a two-year professional basketball career with the Montana Golden Nuggets, at the time coached by George Karl. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Great Falls in 1980 and his MBA from the University of Montana in 1983. He accepted a position as an internal auditor with the University of Idaho in 1989. While working at Idaho, he also pursued his doctorate in education, which he completed in 1993. Prior to his appointment as director of athletics in 2003, Spear was the interim assistant financial vice president. He also spent time at Idaho as the Assistant Vice President for Outreach in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and in grants contracts. He and his wife, Sandy, have one daughter, Morgan.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dr. Rob Spear Chuck Staben took office as the eighteenth president of the University Idaho March 1, 2014. Staben has served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of South Dakota since August 2008. Since 2008, the University of South Dakota has increased enrollment, retention, and graduation as well as research grants. As provost, Staben helped guide the University through state funding declines and helped lead its transition to a Responsibility Cen-ter Management budget model. Prior to his service at South Dakota, Staben served as the associate vice president for research at the University of Kentucky from 2005-2009, acting as vice president in 2007-2008. Prior to that appointment, he was a professor of biology from 1989- 2008 and served as the chair of the biology department from 2000-2004. Previously he was a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford Uni-versity from 1987-1989 and at Chiron Research Laboratories from 1985-1986. He was also a graduate research and teaching assistant at the University of California, Berkeley from 1978-1984. Staben’s research focused on fungal developmental biology, bioinfor-matics, and fungal genomics. He received grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and other agencies. He has served on National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health grant review panels and recently served on a National Research Council committee that reviewed the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competi-tive Research and the Institutional Development Award programs for the U.S. Senate. Staben taught microbiology, genetics, bioinformatics, and introduc-tory biology and he received numerous awards for teaching. Staben received a B.S. degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, in 1978 and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. He is originally from Waukegan, Illinois. Staben and his wife, Dr. Mary Beth Staben, have three children. Mac is completing a masters degree in political philosophy at Boston College and will begin a dual M.D./Ph.D. program at Boston University next fall; Cal is com-pleting a bachelors in art history at the University of Kentucky and will begin an M.D. program next fall; and their daughter Rae is a sophomore at Stanford University. Mary Beth currently practices internal medicine as a hospitalist in Lexington, Kentucky.
