Brothers, Chris and Graham Shepherd were brought

up on the family farm in Lancashire. While Graham

went to qualify as a Vet and ran a successful

veterinary practice for eighteen years, Chris gained

experience at home & at agricultural college. He went

on to work in cattle genetics, a breed society and in

farm finance. Graham also farms a pedigree Hereford

herd and a flock of ewes.

Graham launched G Shepherd Animal Health in

2008 and the business has steadily grown and

developed into a reputable & innovative animal health

company. Originally focused on calf health and fresh

cow management, GSAH now supplies a wide range

of animal health products and equipment. Graham

also provides advice to farmers and consultancy to

larger organisations.

Graham states: “Disease is not just infection, and

drugs are not the only answer. Most disease has

its roots in animal management, especially the

husbandry, nutrition, genetics and how they match

the chosen farming system.”

Graham and Chris are ably assisted by John Carr,

who was also brought up on his family’s farm. He

went on to become a herdsman, before joining GSAH

as product manager. John is also an accomplished

triathlete and ‘Ironman’ competitor.

CharlieWeirfirstbecameinterestedintheideaofpasteurisingcolostrumandcalfmilkduringavisittotheUSA,wherehediscoveredthatitwascommonpractice.HepurchasedaDT30machineonhisreturnandhasusediteversince,alongsideGSAH’sPerfectUdderbags.

“TherehadbeenproblemswithJohne’sdisease,followingthepurchaseofcowsfromotherfarms,”explainsCharlie.“Theyoungstockwerealsonotthrivinganddespitebringinginseveraldifferentvets,Ihadn’tbeenabletopinpointthecauseoftheproblem.

“ThecalvesIsawintheUSAhadarealbloomtothemanditwasobviousthattheywereinpeakcondition.Ibecameconvincedthatthepasteurisationofpooledcolostrumandmilkwasthewayforwardandmyinstinctshavebeenprovedright.”

TheswitchtothepasteurisationofcalfmilkwasnottheonlychangemadeonCharlie’sfarm.Healsoboughtanumberofoutdoorcalfhutches.Thesetwofactorstogetherareresponsibleforasignificantimprovementintheconditionofhisyoungfemalereplacements,hesays.

“ThecalvesarefarhealthiersinceI’vealteredthesystem.Scouringisnowarareoccurrenceandcalfmortalityhasfallensharply,withminimallosses.Thisislargelydowntotheeliminationofbacteriaandvirusesinthecolostrumandcalfmilk.Sickcalvestakeupalotoftimeandmyvetbillshavealsobeenreduced.

“Inaddition,I’mmakingprogressinmyaimtograduallyphaseoutJohne’sintheherdandIcannowbesurethatthediseaseisnotbeingpasseddowntothenextgenerationviathecolostrumandcalfmilk.

“Anotherbonusisthatreplacementheifersdevelopmorerapidlyandarereadytocalveattwoyears,whichistheoptimumtime,inmyopinion.Thepreviousaverageageatfirstcalvingwas25months;thismaynotsoundlikeagreatdealofprogress,butitalladdsupinalargeherd.”

Charliesaysheandhisstaffarenowtotallyreliantonthepasteurisationmachine.

“Themachinewasn’tworkingonemorning;onfurtherinvestigation,afusehadblown.Howevertheideaoffeedingcalvesonunpasteurisedcolostrumormilkhorrifiedmystaff.Theywereextremelywaryofusingtherawproduct,sayingtheywouldprefertousepowder,untilthemachinewasfixed.”

“Thepasteuriseroffersuspeaceofmind,asitensuresthatmilkforthecalvesdoesnotcontaininfectiousdiseaseswhichhavebeentransmittedfromthemilkingcows.Thiswouldbeespeciallyimportant,ifwehadadiseasebreakdown,suchasJohne’sorTB,forexample.Thepasteurisationprocessalsokillsoffanybacteriaandvirusesinthemilk.

“Pasteurisationhassavedtimeandhelpedustoimprovetheutilisationofcalfmilk.Beforeweinstalledthemachine,therewouldbesomeoccasionsduringmorningmilking,forexample,whenwewouldhavetodiscardmilk,duetohavingasurplus.Butwemightfindthattherewasashortfalloneeveningandthenwewouldhavetotakemilkforthecalvesoutofthetank.”

Therehavebeenothersidebenefits,addsStuart.

“Thepasteuriserprovidesuswithcleanmilkwhichisconsistentinqualityforeverycalfandisgivenattheoptimumtemperature.Iwouldn’tsaythatournewsystemhascompletelyeliminatedcalfscouring,buttheincidencehasbeengreatlyreduced.Thecalvesarealsolookingbetteringeneral;wedon’tweighthembutwearesurethattherehasbeenanimprovementingrowthrates.

“Tosummarise,Iwouldsaythatmachinehasmorethanpaidusbackfortheinvestment.Ithinkit’sonlyamatteroftimebeforethepasteurisationofcalfmilkbecomescommonpracticeondairyherdsaroundthecountry.”

SimonDuttonboughthismilkpasteurisingmachineseveralyearsagoandsayshewouldneverwanttobewithoutit.ItwaspurchasedfortheexpresspurposeofphasingoutudderTBintheclosedherd,asfeedingunpasteurisedmilkmeantthatthediseasewasbeingpassedfromcowstoyoungstock.

“Byfeedingourcalvesonpooledrawmilk,wewereactuallyspreadingthedisease,sothatthenextgenerationbecameinfected,”saysSimon.“Thisdidnotmakesenseandwewerepleasedtohaveanopportunitytobreakthisdestructivecycle.Sincewehavebeenpasteurisingourcalfmilk,wehavehadnocasesofTBbeingtransmittedtocalvesbythisroute.”

Whilesomeproducerswhoroutinelyuseapasteuriserreportanoverallbeneficialeffectonhealth,Simontakesadifferentview.

“Wehavealwayshadstrictprotocolsinplaceformanagingourcalvesandweliketothinkthatwerearthemtothebestofourability.Pasteurisingtheirmilkwaslikethemissingpieceofthejigsaw.

“Thepracticehashelpedustostandardiseourmanagementsystem;followingpasteurisation,themachinereheatsallthecalfmilkto37degreesCforfeeding,inordertopromotecalfhealth.Thisprocessiscarriedoutsimplyatthepressofabutton.Eveninaclosedherd,theriskofTBinfectionisalwayspresent,sothemilkpasteuriserhasprovedtobeaveryworthwhileinvestment.”

KevanWindridgeisfullofpraisefortheDT30milkpasteurisingmachine,whichheboughtforthefarmwhereheheldthepositionofdairyherdmanager.Themachinecaughthiseyeatthe2009DairyEventandhelaterspoketoGSAHvet,GrahamShepherd,abouttheproblemshewashavingwiththeyoungercattle.

“WehadexperiencedseveralcasesofTBintheyoungstockandhadlostseveralvaluableanimalstothedisease,”saysKevan.“Icouldn’tunderstandhowtheyhadbecomeinfected,becausetheyhadneverbeenoutatgrass.WhenIexplainedhowourcalffeedingsystemworked,GrahamsaiditwashighlylikelythatwehadbeenpassingonTBviathepooledmilkwhichwefedtothecalves.

“Asitturnedout,TBwasnotwidespreadintheherd;infactthediseasewaseventuallytracedbacktojustacoupleofanimals.Butbymixingtheirmilkwithmilkfrom‘clean’cows,wehadinadvertentlybeenspreadingthediseasetotheyoungstock.”

KevanconfirmsthatthepasteurisationsystemhaltedthecycleofTBinfectionintheyoungeranimals,withnocasesreportedafteritsinstallation.Whilehewasdelightedtohavefoundacost-effectivesolutiontothedisease,healsofoundthepasteuriserusefulforotherreasons.

“Thecalveswereroutinelygivenmilkatthecorrecttemperatureandthiswentalongwaytowardsreducingstress.Ouryoungcalvesthrivedonthepasteurisedmilkandtheincidenceofscouringwassignificantlyreduced.Rotavirusinparticularhadbeenanissue;milkpasteurisationdidnoteliminatethisaltogether,butitdefinitelyhelped.

“Previously,mostofthemilkforthecalveswascollectedduringthelatterstagesofmilking.Butitwasdifficulttosticktoaprecisetimeofdayforcalffeeding,whichwascarriedoutbythetractorman.Sometimestheywouldbefedasearlyas3pm,whileatothertimesitmightgetto6pm,orevenlater.

“Havingthepasteurisermeanttherewaslesspressureonthepersonmilking,asheorshedidn’thavesomeonewhowaswaitingforthemilk.Thepersonmilkingcouldcollectthemilkwhenitwasconvenientandallthecalffeederhadtodowaspressabutton20minutesbeforefeedingtime.Itmadethemanagementofcalvesmuchsimplerandstreamlinedthewholeprocess.

“Iamnolongerworkinginpracticalagriculture,butIamstillinvolvedinfarmingandIalwaysadvisefarmerstobuyamilkpasteuriserfortheircalves.Itisaworthwhileinvestmentanditwillpaybacktheinitialcostofthemachinewithinaveryshorttime.

“WelostanumberofheiferstoTB,justastheywerecominguptobulling.Notonlywasthiscostly,astheywereexpensivetoreplace,butwealsolostgeneticprogress.

“Therewereafewminorissueswiththepasteuriserastimewentalong,buttheywererelatedtowearandtear;asthemachinewasinconstantuse;Irememberthattheelementbrokeononeoccasion.Howeverithadcomewithapackofspareparts,whichwereveryuseful.

“GSAHprovidedexcellentcustomerservice.Therewasaveryquickturnaroundwhensparepartsthatweren’tinthepackwererequiredandweweregivenplentyofgoodadviceandsupport.

“Whenthedairyherdwasdispersed,wealsosoldthepasteuriser,whichwasbythenmorethanthreeyearsold,butstillfullyfunctional.Therewasalotofdemandforitandwerecoupedquiteahighpercentageoftheinitialpurchaseprice,”saysKevan.

GeorgePerrottboughthiscolostrumandmilkpasteurisationmachine,aspartofanoverallprogrammetotacklethelevelofJohne’sdiseasepresentinthetwodairyherdsunderhismanagement.Withinfouryears,thenumberofpositive-testcowshadfallenfrom55tojustover30andthefigurecontinuestodecline.Equallyimportantly,thenewregimehasremovedtheriskofdiseasebeingtransferredtotheyoungstockthroughearlyfeeding.

Calfrearingontheorganicfarmhadalwaysbeensubjecttostrictprotocols,toprotectthehealthstatusofreplacementheifers.HoweverMrPerrottwasawarethatthepoolingofcolostrumandmilkfromtheadultcows,tofeedtothecalves,wasapossiblesourceofJohne’sinfection.

“Itgottothestagewherethenumberofpositivereactorswasincreasingandtheissuewasbecomingreallyserious,”saysGeorge.“Ididnotwanttostopusingpooledcolostrumandmilk,butIrealisedthatfeedingitrawwastoogreatarisk to take.

“Insomecases,feedingrawmilkwasleadingtocalfhealthcomplications,resultinginincreasedmortalitylevels.LookingaftersickcalveswastakingupagreatdealoftimeandthevetbillsweremuchhigherthanIwouldhaveliked.Theroutineuseofantibioticswasnotanoption,becauseofthefarm’sorganicstatus,sopasteurisingseemedlikethebestsolution.”

MrPerrottatfirstboughtacontinuous-flowpasteuriserfromamilkbottlingplant.Butthemachineprovedcomplicatedtooperateandwasalsodifficulttoclean.

“Iwantedafairlysimplepasteurisationunit,whichcamewithabriefsetofinstructionsthatanyonewhowasfeedingthecalvescouldfollow.Anotherrequirementwaseasycleaning;Iruledoutanymachinewithanetworkofpipesandplatesthatmightprovideabreedinggroundforharmfulbacteria.”

Hisnextpurchase,aDT30batchpasteuriser,provedtobeamuchmoresatisfactoryinvestment.

“Themilkisputinthemachineintheeveningandbymorning,ithasbeenpasteurisedandchilled,readyforreheatingtotheoptimumtemperatureatthepressofabutton.Ithasbothstandardisedandsimplifiedtheprocessofcalffeeding.Astheunitusesawaterbath,onlythecylinderrequiresdailycleaning.

“PasteurisationnotonlycontrolsJohne’sdisease,italsokillsoffharmfulbacteriaandviruses,whichmeansthatcalvesreceiveasterile,homogenousproduct.Themachineisalsousedfortheprocessingofcolostrum;thisisusually

takenfromoldercows,whichtendtohavethehighestantibodylevels.”

OthermeasurestominimisethespreadofJohne’sinfectiontotheyoungcalvesincludecalvingpositivereactorsonaseparatefarm,withallsuspectcowsputtoabeefbreedbull.MrPerrottdoesnotvaccinatehisanimalstoprotectthemagainstthedisease;hebelievesthatthelivevaccinecanproduceconfusingtestresults.Instead,heusesa‘trafficlights’system,totrackJohne’s-infectedcattle.

“ThemilkistestedforJohne’severythreemonths,”heexplains.“Reactorcowsarefreeze-brandedwithaletterJontheirrumpsandgivenaredeartag.Thisallowsforeasyidentificationbyallthestaff,includingthereliefmilker.Ifacowhastwotestswhichshowascoreofmorethan100,intermsoffailure,shewillbeculled.Thisruleappliestoanimalsatallstagesoflactation;itisexpensivetocullcows,butunlessItakeactionthewholeherdwillbecomeinfected.”

Unit running costs have been minimal.
