LAST TIME OUT - DENVER 4 AT NEBRASKA-OMAHA 5, JAN. 3, 2015

[10/10]DENVERFALLSTO[12/13]NEBRASKA-OMAHA,5-4AT THE CENTURYLINK CENTERDaniel Doremus, Matt Marcinew, Zac Larraza and Matt Ta-brum Score for Pioneers in Road Loss

OMAHA, NE – In their first visit to the CenturyLink Center since last spring’s opening round playoff victory, the University of Denver Pioneers dropped a 5-4 decision to the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks on Friday night, resultantly falling to 11-6-1 on the season (4-4-0-0, NCHC). With the win, UNO improves to 13-5-2 with an in-conference record of 7-3-1-1.

After battling to a 3-3 deadlock over the first two periods of play, the Mavericks narrowly outdueled the Pioneers in the third, scoring two goals to Denver’s one to capture a home victory in dramatic fashion.

The visitors struck first on Friday as Daniel Doremus (Aspen, Colo.) ripped a wrist shot to the back of UNO’s net in the third minute of play to improve his 2014-15 goals total to five. In his return to Denver’s lineup after missing two games due to his commitment to the U.S. National Junior Team, sophomore defenseman Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis.) picked up the lone assist on the play.

Denver took a 2-0 lead late in the opening period when Matt Marcinew (Calgary, Alberta) took a feed from Danton Heinen (Langley, British Columbia) on the fly upon entering Nebras-ka-Omaha’s zone and proceeded to wire the third marker of his sophomore campaign through Mavericks goalie Kirk Thompson’s pads.

Arizona Coyotes prospect Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, Ariz.) then put Denver up by three 6:40 into the second period, finishing off a picture-perfect tic-tac-toe passing play in Nebraska-Omaha terri-tory with Gabe Levin (Marina del Rey, Calif.) and Matt VanVoorhis (Edina, Minn.) to register his sixth goal of the season. The Maver-icks then reeled off three goals in quick succession in the second half of the middle frame, sending Friday’s contest into the second intermission with the score tied at three apiece in the process

Senior forward Matt Tabrum (Colorado Springs, Colo.) put the Pioneers back on top 4-3 midway through the third period, carrying the puck across UNO’s blue line and unleashing a rocket of a wrist shot that beat Thompson high to make the first goal of his season of the go-ahead variety. The hosts then struck twice in the final 3:12 of regulation to pull ahead and ultimately take the decision by a 5-4 final.
