Hymn:

1. Glory be to God the Father, glory be to God the Son, glory be to God the Spirit, God almighty, Three in One! Glory, glory, glory, glory while eternal ages run.

2. Glory be to him who loved us, washed us from each spot and stain; glory be to him who bought us, made us kings with him to reign; glory, glory, glory, glory to the Lamb that once was slain

3. Glory to the king of angels, glory to the church’s king, glory to the king of nations, heaven and earth, your praises bring; glory, glory, glory, glory to the King of Glory bring.

4. ‘Glory, blessing, praise eternal!’ thus the choir of angels sings; ‘Honour, riches, power, dominion!’ thus its praise creation brings; glory, glory, glory, glory, glory to the King of kings!

Horatius Bonar 1808–89 alt.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever. Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

4

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (How Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you ,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution {Celebrant}

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day God of majesty, you led the Messiah through suffering into risen life, and took him up into the glory of heaven: clothe us with the power promised from on high, and send us forth to the ends of the earth as heralds of repentance and witnesses of Jesus Christ, the firstborn from the dead, who lives with you now and always in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from CEV

First Reading: Acts 1.6-11

6 While the apostles were still with Jesus, they asked him, “Lord, are you now going to give Israel its own king again?”[a]

7 Jesus said to them, “You don’t need to know the time of those events that only the Father controls.8 But the Holy Spirit will come upon you and give you power. Then you will tell everyone about me in Jerusalem, in all Judea, in Samaria, and everywhere in the world.” 9 After Jesus had said this and while they were watching, he was taken up into a cloud. They could not see him, 10 but as he went up, they kept looking up into the sky.

Suddenly two men dressed in white clothes were standing there beside them. 11 They said, “Why are you men from Galilee standing here and looking up into the sky? Jesus has been taken to heaven. But he will come back in the same way that you have seen him go.”

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

9

Psalm 68

The response is sung first by the choir and then by the congregation. Thereafter it is sung by the congregation after each verse.

The verses are sung by the choir.

Response: (all)

Verses (sung by choir)

1. The just shall rejoice at the presence of God, they shall exult and dance for joy. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name; rejoice in the Lord, exult in his presence. Response

2. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, such is God in his holy place. God gives the lonely a home to live in; he leads the prisoners forth into freedom. Response

3. You poured down, O God, a generous rain; when your people were starved you gave them new life. It was there that your people found a home, prepared in your goodness, O God, for the poor. Response

Second Reading: 1 Peter 5:6-11

6 Be humble in the presence of God’s mighty power, and he will honour you when the time comes. 7 God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him.

8 Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack. 9 But you must resist the devil and stay strong in your faith. You know that all over the world the Lord’s followers are suffering just as you are. 10 But God shows undeserved kindness to everyone. That’s why he appointed Christ Jesus to choose you to share in his eternal glory. You will suffer for a while, but God will make you complete, steady, strong, and firm. 11 God will be in control forever! Amen.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord, THANKS BE TO GOD

11

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET OUR

LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 17 beginning at the 1st verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. After Jesus had finished speaking to his disciples, he looked up toward heaven and prayed: Father, the time has come for you to bring glory to your Son, in order that he may bring glory to you.2 And you gave him power over all people, so that he would give eternal life to everyone you give him. 3 Eternal life is to know you, the only true God, and to know Jesus Christ, the one you sent. 4 I have brought glory to you here on earth by doing everything you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, give me back the glory that I had with you before the world was created. 6 You have given me some followers from this world, and I have shown them what you are like. They were yours, but you gave them to me, and they have obeyed you. 7 They know that you gave me everything I have. 8 I told my followers what you told me, and they accepted it. They know that I came from you, and they believe that you are the one who sent me. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

BAPTISM

The joy and the responsibility for nurturing children comes with a sense of hope and expectation for the many blessings that children are. Baptism of children is a celebration of new life and the promise of eternal life, an acknowledgement of their need for care and protection, and a commitment to ensure the best environment for their development.

While we focus on the grace of God given to those who are baptized, we

also acknowledge that spiritual growth depends on parents and godparents, and

13

the wider circle of the community of faith, who are the examples and influence that mould a person’s character, and we would all hope that the example that we set will be a positive influence in areas of faith, morals and relationships. In this service of baptism we bring Kristy, Giselle and Shylah into God’s presence that they may be enfolded in the grace of the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus had risen from the dead, he commanded his followers to go

and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, the promises of God are visibly signed and sealed for us, we are joined to Christ, and made members of his Church.

Parent’s and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express

their own trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up the children in the faith and practice of the Church.

(Those to be Baptised, together with parents, and godparents gather around

the font). The, parents, and godparents and Kirsty are asked the questions: Q/ Before God and this congregation, you must affirm your belief in God and so I ask: Do you Believe in God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

A/ I do. Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in in coming for baptism and bringing Giselle and Shylah for baptism?

A/ I will. Q/ By your prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you encourage them in the life and faith of the Christian community?

A/ I will.

Q/ As your life will be an example to these candidates will you turn away from evil thoughts, words and actions?

A/ I will.

14

Q/ Will you affirm Christian values, especially those of honesty, compassion and mercy?

A/ I will. Priest to the congregation: You have heard this response to Christ. Will you support them in this calling?

ALL: WE WILL. Priest: Almighty God lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. AMEN.

Prayers and Blessing of the water: Let us pray: Grant, merciful God, that these persons may be so joined with Christ in baptism that your nature may be raised up in them that the fruit of your Spirit grow and flourish. Give to family and friends the desire to share with them what you have revealed in your Holy Gospel. May they know Christ’s forgiving love and continue in the fellowship and service of his church. May they proclaim, by word and example, the good news of God in Christ.

We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; you nourish and sustain all living things. Through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who forms us in the likeness of Christ and leads us to proclaim your kingdom.

And now we give you thanks that you have called these persons to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that those who are baptized in it may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise to newness of life, and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we give you praise and honour in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever, AMEN.

15

An affirmation of faith: Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents in affirming the faith of the church. Do you believe in God the Father? A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Priest: Do you believe in God the Son? A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Leader: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN.

The Baptism:

Priest: N.N., I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, AMEN.

I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by a bishop is used in anointing to symbolize being chosen

in God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in

Christ.)

Priest: Live as a disciple of Christ;

fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. ALL: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory.

16

Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. ALL: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. Priest: God has called you into his church. ALL: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us

of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God.

Prayers for the child, parents and godparents Merciful God, in your infinite love you have made a new covenant with us in your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, promising to be our God and the God of our children. Enable all who are baptised in your name to live as a covenant people. Fulfil your promises for them we pray, and grant that she may grow in your faith and service. We ask this in the name of our Saviour Jesus Christ, AMEN.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us]

Offertory Hymn: TiS 477

1. Jesus calls us here to meet him as, through word and song and prayer, we affirm God’s promised presence where his people live and care. Praise the God who keeps his promise; praise the Son who calls us friends; praise the Spirit who, among us, to our hopes and fears attends.

2. Jesus calls us to confess him Word of Life and Lord of All, sharer of our flesh and frailness saving all who fail or fall. Tell his holy human story; tell his tales that all may hear; tell the world that Christ in glory came to earth to meet us here.

3. Jesus calls us to each other: found in him are no divides. Race and class and sex and language such are barriers he derides. Join the hand of friend and stranger; join the hands of age and youth; join the faithful and the doubter in their common search for truth.
