Hymn: TiS 432 1. Christ is made the sure foundation, Christ the head and cornerstone, chosen by the Lord, and precious, binding all the church in one, holy Zion’s help for ever, and her confidence alone.

2. All that dedicated city, dearly loved by God on high, in exultant jubilation pours perpetual melody, God the Three in One adoring, praising him eternally.

3. Here among us, where we call you come, O Lord our God today; with your gentle loving-kindness hear your people as we pray, and your fullest benediction pour upon us here today.

4. Here bestow on all your people what we ask of you to gain, what we gain from you for ever with the blessèd to retain, and hereafter in your glory evermore with you to reign.

5. Praise and honour to the Father, praise and honour to the Son, praise and honour to the Spirit, ever Three and ever One, one in might and one in glory while eternal ages run.

From Urbs beata Hierusalem, Latin, c. 7th cent. tr. John Mason Neale 1818–66 alt.

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting: The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Sentence: Your Father in heaven makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Matthew 5.45, Luke 6.36

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Hidden God, whose wisdom compels our love and unsettles all our values: fill us with desire to search for her truth, that we may transform the world, becoming fools for her sake, through Jesus Christ, your Word and Wisdom made flesh,

to whom be glory for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV) First Reading: Leviticus 19.1-2, 9-18 1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. 9 When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very edges of your field, or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 You shall not strip your vineyard bare, or gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the alien: I am the Lord your God. 11 You shall not steal; you shall not deal falsely; and you shall not lie to one another. 12 And you shall not swear falsely by my name, profaning the name of your God: I am the Lord. 13 You shall not defraud your neighbour; you shall not steal; and you shall not keep for yourself the wages of a labourer until morning. 14 You shall not revile the deaf or put a stumbling-block before the blind; you shall fear your God: I am the Lord. 15 You shall not render an unjust judgement; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbour. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbour: I am the Lord. 17 You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbour, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 119.33-40 33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes:

and I will honour it to the end. 34 Give me understanding, that I may keep your law:

that I may keep it with my whole heart. 35 Guide me in the path of your commandments:

for therein is my delight. 36 Incline my heart to your commands:

and not to selfish gain. 37 Turn away my eyes from looking on vanities:

as I walk in your way give me life. 38 Make good your promise to your servant:

the promise that endures for all who fear you. 39 Turn aside the taunts that I dread:

for your judgements are very good. 40 Lord, I long for your precepts:

in your righteousness give me life. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 3.10-17 10 According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building on it. Each builder must choose with care how to build on it. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— 13 the work of each builder will become visible, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each has done.14 If what has been built on the foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If the work is burned, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved, but only as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 650

1. Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.

2. We are pilgrims on a journey and companions on the road; we are here to help each other walk the mile and bear the load.

3. I will hold the Christ-light for you in the night-time of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.

4. I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh I’ll laugh with you; I will share your joy and sorrow till we’ve seen this journey through.

5. When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we’ve known together of Christ’s love and agony.

6. Brother, sister, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant too.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 5 beginning at the 38th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

38 ‘You have heard that it was said, “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” 39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; 41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. 42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you. 43 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.” 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 607

1. Make me a chan-nel of your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring your love; where there is injury, your pardon, Lord; and where there’s doubt, true faith in you.

O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love with all my soul.

2. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope; where there is darkness, let me bring your light; and where there’s sad ness, ever joy.

O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love with all my soul.

3. Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving of ourselves that we receive, and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.

Final Hymn: TiS 657

1. God of freedom, God of justice, God whose love is strong as death, God who saw the dark of prison, God who knew the price of faith: touch our world of sad oppression with your Spirit’s healing breath.

2. Rid the earth of torture’s terror, God whose hands were nailed to wood; hear the cries of pain and protest, God who shed the tears and blood; move in us the power of pity, restless for the common good.

3. Make in us a captive conscience quick to hear, to act, to plead; make us truly sisters, brothers of whatever race or creed: teach us to be fully human, open to each other’s need.
