INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING

Ashbury College’s unique location in the heart of Canada’s bilingual capital city, together with the cultural diversity of our community, fosters international understanding and global responsibility.

Established in 1891, Ashbury College is an independent university preparatory school located in Ottawa, Canada. For over 100 years, Ashbury College has challenged students with a strong academic

program, complimented by renowned arts, athletics, debate, leadership, community service and international exchange opportunities. ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL DIPLOMA

(OSSD)

All students graduate with the Ontario Ministry of Education regulated Ontario Secondary School Diploma, which requires the completion of 30 course credits (one credit is a minimum of 110 hours of in-class instruction). Ashbury is a non-semestered school. All Ashbury credit courses (Grades 9 to 12) meet or exceed the expectations of the provincial curriculum. The four-year course of study requires students to perform 40 hours of community service and write a mandated Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), for which the passing rate of our Grade 10 students in the 2012–2013 academic year was 94 percent.

ASHBURY DIPLOMA

In addition to the OSSD, Ashbury issues its own diploma characterized by its carefully planned academic structure, which includes a greater number of mandatory courses than the OSSD in the areas of a second language, physical and health education, the arts and world social studies. To encourage the development of student interests and proficiency in French, a bilingual (English and French) diploma is granted to students who earn seven credits in French: four in Extended or Immersion French; and, three in Ashbury courses taught in French. Forty-two graduates received this distinction this year.

EVALUATION

Ashbury’s evaluation of student performance is based on a combination of continuous assessment of termwork and class tests (70 percent), and summative evaluations (30 percent) which typically includes a major assignment and a final exam.

GRADING SYSTEM

In Ontario, the complete mark range is 0 to 100 percent, with a passing mark set at 50 percent. Honours level marks are 80 percent and above. The recommended university minimum range is 65 to 70 percent. Courses are unweighted.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA

Ashbury College has been an IB World School since 1976. To achieve the full IB Diploma, students study in six subject areas during the last two years of high school and fulfill the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Community, Action and Service requirements. Approximately 30% of Ashbury students complete the full diploma. Many students earn IB Bilingual Diplomas and almost all students earn IB course certificates in selected subject areas. The IB program at Ashbury is taught in alignment with the Ontario credit system, allowing our students to achieve internationally recognized and externally assessed IB credentials in addition to earning the OSSD. Ashbury offers a full range of IB courses at both the standard and higher levels, responding to the different needs, interests and abilities of students.

IBSO CONVERSION SCALE FOR IB GRADES

Ashbury is a founding member of the International Baccalaureate Schools of Ontario (IBSO), a council consisting of the 90 Ontario IB schools. At the request of Canadian universities, IBSO uses this scale of equivalent grades to show what IB grades represent in Ontario percentages.
