Greenwich enjoys a truly colorful past. From its precarious position on the Connecticut frontier during the American Revolution to its later reputation as a Gilded Age enclave for the rich and infamous, our town has long been associated with well-known individuals and pivotal events in the arts, business, journalism and politics.

e Historical Society contributes immeasurably to the cultural vitality of this unique community. We serve as your bridge from the past to the future by oering innovative programs, exhibitions and preservation initiatives. e Bush-Holley Historic Site, which boasts a bucolic period landscape, was home to one of the rst American Impressionist art colonies and encompasses an extensive research library and archives chronicling all things Greenwich, the Vanderbilt Education Center and the 1805 Storehouse Gallery with rotating exhibitions and a museum shop.

At the Historical Society, you can attend fascinating lectures, enjoy hands-on family and educational programs, walk back in time on docent-led tours of Bush-Holley House and be captivated by live storytelling programs.

Financial Highlightstreasurer’s comments: Operating results for the scal year ended June 30 were essentially a breakeven. e balance sheet remains strong. e investment portfolio beneted from the strong stock market with a total return, including income and gains, of over $500,000. Based on recent trends, returns going forward may not achieve that performance. Our portfolio is managed by e Investment Fund For Foundations (TIFF), which has over $11 billion under management. Our continuing challenge is to provide the necessary funding for our wide range of preservation and education programs, bearing in mind that we receive no funding from the Town of Greenwich. We appreciate your past support and hope that you will continue to keep the Historical Society high on your list of priorities.— Bruce Dixon, Vice Chairman and Treasurer

e Greenwich Historical Society plays a crucial role in preserving the history of Greenwich and provides a broad spectrum of educational programs that delight, inform and connect people in meaningful ways to the social, architectural, economic and cultural heritage of our community. e Historical Society has implemented numerous initiatives and innovations to fulll this mission and engage new audiences.

We are increasingly employing digital technologies to both enhance the experience of participants in on-site programs and to deliver educational materials to those o-site. Examples include the following:

• Mounting multimedia exhibitions in our Storehouse Gallery• Launching our new “Digital Archives,” which provides broad public access to our archival

collections• Initiating the creation of online learning resources such as content designed for students’ tablets• Delivering historic photographs and feature articles through social media and our new online

exhibition • Expanding the scope, content and distribution of publications such as our online newsletter

Simultaneously, substantial progress was made in facilities and program planning for our Strickland Road campus, which will incorporate the Toby’s Tavern building, expansion of our archives and research library, and the ability to add to our on-site program capabilities.

Highlights of 2014 also included two major exhibitions, program partnerships with the Greenwich Library and the Greenwich Shellsh Commission, nomination of the River Road-Mead Avenue Historic District to the National Register, the expansion of our documented Landmarks Sites to 288 Greenwich historic properties, and the engagement of over 8,700 students and adults in rsthand experiences of American history and art.

All these eorts were possible only because of your support. Without our members, distinguished trustees, dedicated professional sta, devoted volunteers, community partners, generous patrons and donors, meeting our goals would not be possible. We are indebted to you all for your dedication, participation and very generous contributions this past year.

Please join us in 2015 as we celebrate the Town of Greenwich’s 375th anniversary, which, with your encouragement and support, will allow the Historical Society to expand its eorts to preserve and share our town's many stories and, in so doing, inspire a sense of place and a love of history in current and future generations.

Warm regards,

Davidde Strackbein, Chairman Debra Mecky, Executive Director

Over the course of the year we launched three art and history exhibitions in the Storehouse Gallery and oered lectures and events that expanded exhibition themes in a variety of ways. We brought back the Fall Festival and Scarecrow Competition and added family-friendly activities to our Frolic at French Farm, so that all ages might have an opportunity to appreciate this Greenwich treasure. We also continued to have sellout crowds at Story Barn, which is fast becoming a Greenwich tradition.

All Greenwich public school third-graders took part in the Sarah Bush and Her Town program, which teaches about early life in Greenwich, and over 1,200 students, Scouts and adults enjoyed tours of beloved Bush-Holley House. In total, over 12,000 people visited our site to explore the many facets of Greenwich history.

AntiquariusAntiquarius is an annual series of holiday events and a major fundraiser for the Greenwich Historical Society. All proceeds go to support the Historical Society’s education and preservation activities and its stewardship of Bush-Holley Historic Site.

Festivities began when, in recognition of their early and generous support, 150 individual and corporate patrons of Antiquarius 2013 were graciously feted at the home of Richard and Linda Breeden.

A preview party at the Greenwich Winter Antiques Show followed in early December where guests were wowed with a “Meet Me at the Beverly Hills Hotel” theme along with performances by “Marilyn Monroe” and “Frank Sinatra” set in a re-creation of the Polo Lounge.

ings kept rolling the following week, and despite a snowy rst night, the Holiday Boutique oered elegant holiday shopping with over 30 exclusive specialty vendors.

Author/designer Tom Scheerer signed books, and concert pianist Randall Atcheson entertained shoppers throughout the evening. Going out on a high note, Antiquarius 2013 oered an extraordinary House Tour. We are indebted to the ve incredible homeowners who were kind enough to open their spectacular homes to the community in support of the Historical Society.

Special thanks go to generous corporate sponsors David Ogilvy & Associates, Douglas VanderHorn Architects, Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, Gabelli Funds, NEBCO Insurance Services and Northern Trust, and exclusive media sponsor Connecticut Cottages & Gardens.

A salute to Horseneck Wines & Liquors, Broken Shed Vodka, Marcia Selden Catering and Meli Melo for providing festive food and libations throughout.

2014 Trust Event

e Advisory Council is composed of distinguished community members who serve as ambassadors in support of the Historical Society’s mission.

e Greenwich Historic Trust, an annual leadership giving program, was established in honor of past chairman Claire F. Vanderbilt to support creative programming and fresh interpretations of history, to fund the restoration and interpretation of Bush-Holley House and to sustain preservation initiatives.

is year’s program to recognize lead donors to the Trust was chaired by Lynne Wheat and Robert Getz and took place on June 3, 2014, at Seven Bridges, a foundation created in 1993 by Richard McKenzie to support both established and emerging living artists and to promote their creativity. is very special group of donors enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres surrounded by Seven Bridges’ extraordinary collection of large-scale modernist and gurative paintings, art glass and sculptures. ey were also treated to a private tour of the art glass collection led by Jim Schantz of Schantz Galleries.

Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company and NEBCO Insurance Services, LLC generously underwrote the entire event.

In memory of Chandler BatesChandler Bates joined the Board of Trustees in 1975, serving until 1983 and again from 1984 to 1992, at which time he was named an Honorary Trustee. He was a key player when the Archives was being built in 1986–1987 and was always willing to lend a helping hand in building or repairing anything that needed attention.

Drawing upon both his long history in the New York publishing world and his love of sailing, he served as editor of the history of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club, A Century of Sailing, 1889–1989. He also had a great sense of humor and a real love of history.

In memory of Ed BraggEd Bragg was a long-time supporter, member of the Board and chair of the Development Committee, and an Advisory Council member. He was instrumental in saving and restoring the historic lighthouse on Great Captain’s Island through “Save the Light.” Together with his wife Margaret, he made possible the furnishing of the administrative oces in the Justus Luke Bush Storehouse in 1998. We will miss both his warm smile and his good counsel. — Debra Mecky
