The oil industry is going through challenging times under the current global market conditions. The export of oil and gas from traditionally consuming countries has changed the landscape. It is expected that oil prices will remain close to an average of $53/bbl throughout 2017 and 2018. The number of operating rigs has significantly increased since a year ago, especially in North America in an effort to make up for the decline in the producing assets, however commitment to capital expenditure remains conservative. Technological break-throughs are required to unlock hydrocarbons in an efficient and cost effective manner. The required step change should aim at improving recovery factor beyond the current 55%, achieve 100% fracturing efficiency in unconventional reservoirs, drilling automation through robotic applications, superior seismic resolution in acquisition and imaging technologies, and optimization of reservoir production and management which will lead to sustainable future energy under the current market environment. Tremendous amounts of data have been collected in the oil industry by operators and service companies in the upstream operations. Exploring and exploiting this huge data will play a key role in the way we work going forward and enable new ways to think and act differently and effectively. Big data analytics will provide new approaches to address inefficiencies and will im-prove our performance in operations and potentially reduce cost of production. The new advances in technology have been incremental in nature as seen in recent years. The industry is a slow adopter to change which is hindering our efforts for improved efficiencies and effectiveness. The industry needs to change the way we do things and start to think more creatively on how to develop technology. We need to look outside our industry and bring technology successes and adopt them to our operational procedures. The challenges we face in the oilfield such as stuck pipe, loss circulation, wellbore sta-bility, and water management are still to be addressed. The industry keeps doing the same as before which gives them less uncertainties. Predictive algorithms, system diagnostics, early warning of deteriora-tion and failure can be achieved if we use not only historical data but also current and future data in a full stream analytics. Data scientists are critical to our future energy and we hope to transform our in-dustry into a true digital era where inefficiencies are reduced, cost is optimized, new discoveries are made and recovery is maximized. The invited panelists will share their vision and view forward looking at how we will think and change.

Unconventional resources are targeted for exploration and development around the globe, including the Middle East. With a relatively short cy-cle time and quick payout, the exploitation of these resources in mature markets like North America has revealed its commerciality. As a result of active exploration and appraisal campaigns over the last several years, a number of Middle East basins have been identified as potential emerg-ing unconventional plays. These basins host the world’s largest conven-tional hydrocarbon resource and may have an order of magnitude higher of hydrocarbons in unconventional reservoirs waiting to be developed. However, in today’s market conditions, the global energy landscape out-lines some key challenges for unconventional gas development. Building on the successful unconventional experience from North America, the panel session will share proven industry examples of best practices and strategies for unconventional gas development in today’s challenging market. With focus on resilience, agility and adaptability, the challenges facing these emerging plays can be transformed into opportunities. In addition, data gathering strategies during the initial exploration phase will be discussed to provide insights on the economic benchmarks used to assess and rank such emerging plays. Ultimately, this information will provide national oil companies, international oil companies, and services companies with the knowledge needed to evaluate, exploit and acceler-ate the development of such resource plays.

Russell Herbert, Industry Principal for O&G, OSIsoft In the last two decades, the world has witnessed how efficient data flow among devices connected to the internet and machines has trans-formed and enhanced human lives and fundamentally altered every industry in what is known as the 4th industrial revolution. In the oil and gas industry, enormous volumes of data collected through sensors such as microseismic, fiberoptics, and logging have brought new chal-lenges and unexpected opportunities. Similar to other industries, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will help combine data collected from geology, geophysics, petrophysics, lithology, miner-alogy with data from drilling, completions, production, and economics to generate actionable insights that will help us find and produce more hydrocarbon in faster, cheaper, and safer ways. In this session, we explore these challenges and opportunities citing real life, value-added AI and IoT applications in the Oil & Gas industry.

Carbonate Essentials: Pores to Prospect

Date: 5 March 2018Venue: Le Meridien Hotel, Bahrain City CentreInstructor: Christopher LinerFees: SEG Member: US$785 Non Member: US$885 Student: US$250

Who Should AttendAttendees should have a BS degree in Geology, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering or related field and preferably three year’s work experience.

Course DescriptionThis course is an overview of carbonates from geology to seismic interpretation, with particular emphasis on karst topography and seismic expression thereof.

Carbonate reservoirs represent over 60% of worldwide petroleum re-serves, including emerging unconventional reservoirs. Unlike clastics, carbonate mineralogy is relatively simple, while complexity arises from depositional environment lateral variability, pore structure, di-genesis and dissolution. These factors influence bulk rock properties and, in turn, seismic response. The course offers a broad overview of carbonate geology and properties that can be mapped on a seismic scale as potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. To illustrate key concepts, field sites and case histories are presented from global locations.

Course Outline• Geology: classification, deposition, diagenesis, dolomite, chalk,

pores, karst• Rock Physics: velocity versus [everything], beware ND correlation,

Gassmann in carbonates?, diagenesis and rock physics• Wireline: fractures and cross-dipole sonic, Vp/Vs-Impedance

space, synthetic seismogram, time-depth curve• Seismic 101: tuning, resolution, spatial aliasing, dip and throw,

3D intro, meaning of seismic amplitude• Horizons: layers and information, tracking in unfaulted terrain,

offset tracking, flattening, depth conversion, tracking in faulted terrain, geobody extraction

• Attributes: acoustic impedance, similarity, curvature, spectral decomposition, AVO

Course Goals• Define carbonate lithofacies, pore structures and karst features• Classify carbonate reservoir rocks in Vp/Vs-Impedance space• Interpret carbonate horizons and unconformities on 3D seismic

amplitude data• Discuss the application of 3D seismic attributes to mapping of

carbonate reservoirs

Who Should AttendGeoscientists and petroleum professionals

OverviewThe Awali Field was the first oil field to be discovered in the Arabian Peninsula, back in 1932. Located 30km south of Manama, the field con-tinues to be the economic powerhouse of Bahrain. The field visit will cover outcrops around Jebel Al Dhukhan, the surface expression of the Bahrain anticline, where Eocene Dammam and Rus formations are ex-posed. These are a part of the conspicuous carbonate rimrock in the cent-er of the island that are surrounded by a ring of younger Miocene and Quaternary formations on the periphery. The visit will give participants an overview of the facies architecture, digenetic processes and structural features present on the field. It will also cover the present day oil and gas development facilities in Awali Field and the Bapco Oil Museum.

SitesJabel Dukhan- Site ASmall hill located north of Jabel Al Dukhan where main features of Awali structure can be seen.

Jabel Dukhan – Site BMineralized fault representing the main faulting trend of the Awali an-ticline central graben.

Water Treatment PlantThis facility receives liquid production from surrounding manifolds for further separation where oil and water gets separated through series of separation methods both physical and chemical assisted separation. The separated high quality water is then injected back to the reservoir.

Gas Compression StationThis facility is established to compress associated gas produced from WM up to adequate pressure for re-injection into the reservoirs.

RimrockForming the internal slope of Awali structure, evidence of compres-sional faulting can be seen.

Steam Generation Station/PilotPortion of the treated water is being pumped to steam generation fa-cility to produce steam for steam injection pilot where different steam injection concepts is under study.

Short Courses for Young Professionals and Students

The Art of Science

Date: 5 March 2018Time: 08:00 – 12:00Instrcutor: Dr. Roel SniederVenue: Student Pavilion, Bahrain Exhibition and

Convention Centre

Who Should AttendThis lecture is aimed at junior researchers and their mentors in all fields of science and engineering. Depending of the venue of the class and the duration of the lecture we will determine which topics to cover.

Course DescriptionThe training of young researchers often takes place is a way that is reminiscent of becoming a professional in the middle ages. In those times, a pupil would work together with a master and while work-ing along with the master the pupil acquires the necessary skills. Most graduate students (the pupil) receive their research training this way; by working with an academic advisor (the master), the skills necessary for being an effective researcher are assumed to diffuse to the student. This happens to a certain extent, but the process is often inefficient and incomplete. The lecture “The Art of Science” aims to fill this gap by specifically addressing issues that are needed to be effective in re-search.

The lecture offers a selection of topics that include the following.• What is science? (What is it that makes science move forward, and

how can we tap most effectively into our creativity?)• Choosing a research topic. (What considerations should be taken

into account in creating a research portfolio?)• Questions drive research. (How can one find answers if one doesn’t

know what the questions are? How to turn questions into a work plan?)

• Goal setting. (Without setting goals we are adrift, yet goals are not everything; being in the process and giving meaning is part of our work as well.)

• Turning challenges into opportunities. (What are common challeng-es and opportunities in research, and how can we use these to move forward?)

• Ethics of research. (How do we connect our values to our work as a researcher, both in the content of our work and in the way we carry out our work?)

• Using the scientific literature. (How do we keep up with the scien-tific literature and archive bibliographic information effectively?)

• Communication. (Having good communication skills is essential in industry and academia. What are the does and don’ts of oral com-munication?)

• Publishing a paper. (Getting scientific work published can be an art, how can we increase our chances of success while minimizing com-plications along the way?)

• Time management. (In this time of continuous connection and a drive to optimize productivity, it is a challenge to manage our activi-ties. How does one choose these activities effectively while being a responsible contributor at work and outside of work?)

• Writing proposals. (How can we most effectively communicate re-search ideas so that they will receive financial support?)

Course ObjectivesUpon completion of the course, participants will be able to:• understand the considerations for choosing a research portfolio,• make a work plan for research that is underpinned by questions,• know common pitfalls and opportunities in research,• describe the elements of efficient oral communication,• comprehend fundamentals of time management.

Who Should AttendStudents, fresh graduates and young professionals who are studying petroleum geosciences and engineering. The course is designed for those seeking to keep high momentum for success and industry initia-tives.

Course DescriptionThe Arabian plate with its wide variety of petroleum exploration and development concepts, vast areas with rich source rocks, numerous reservoirs (basement to Miocene), and long inventory of trapping

mechanisms, is classified as the highest world’s potential plate. This course introduces the Arabian plate petroleum systems to exist in sev-en tectonics provinces of different origins and evolution models, four in intra-plate settings and three in plate boundary settings.

Course ContentThis course introduces the fundamentals of Earth geological processes that continually evolve to develop petroleum systems with special em-phasis on the Arabian plate from basin to prospect and field scales.

The following points are covered in summary during the course:• Factors that controlled opening, fill and evolution of the seven pe-

troleum basins in the Arabian plate; tectonics, sea-level changes and sediments influx.

• Fundamentals of tectonic analysis of petroleum systems in the Arabian plate from basin to prospect and field scales.

• Key aspects for creating exploration concepts and planning field de-velopment concepts.

• Explaining the tectonics of the seven petroleum basins in the Arabian plate.

(young professionals) 08.30 - 10.10, 8 March 2018 (students)Venue: Room D, Bahrain International Exhibition &

Convention Centre

Overview: Objectives and ContentThis 2 hour core workshop will cover the sedimentology and biostratig-raphy of the Arab-D reservoir, the most prolific reservoir in the world. Fundamentals of core analysis will be discussed with a focus on al-lochthonous and biotic components, sedimentary structures and depo-sitional textures of the reservoir. Participants will be able to identify different reservoir facies at both hand-specimen and thin-section scale. In addition, evaluation of the core facies lateral and vertical continuity and integration with petrophysical data to meet exploration and reser-voir characterization objectives will be introduced.

Who Should AttendThis workshop is designed for geologist, geophysicist and engineering students and young professionals.

Instructors BiosSaad Fahd Al-Awwad is a sedimentologist at Saudi Aramco. He was awarded his PhD in sequence stra-tigraphy in 2013 from Curtin University, Australia. Saad worked in reserves assessment, reservoir characterization, sequence stratigraphic analysis, exploration prospect generation and unconven-tional resources in various carbonate reservoirs in Saudi Arabia. Saad’s recent research has been focused on the high-resolution sequence stratigraphy of the Arabian plate’s Jurassic system. His research aims to understand reservoir and inter-reservoir facies architecture through the integration of sedimentologic, geophysical, micropaleontologic and petrophysical data.

Abdullah Al-Dhubaib joined Saudi Aramco in 1995, where he worked as a prospect Generator. Abdullah specialized in micropaleontology and his work involved biosteering and biostratigraphy of Permian and Cretaceous reservoirs. His recent work focuses on integrating the micropalaeon-tology and sedimentology of the Saudi Jurassic succession. Abdullah has a number of publications in the subjects of foraminifera taxonomy and Jurassic biofacies. He received PhD in Micropalaeontology from University College London.
