KAYOKO DAN, MUSIC DIRECTOR

I am proud to present to you the CSO’s 2013/14 Season. As you can see, we have an exciting season planned for you. Some of the highlights of the Barnett & Company Masterworks Series include Mozart’s Requiem with our wonderful CSO Chorus; Holst’s The Planets with a video presentation of space exploration; one of my favorite Beethoven symphonies, Symphony No. 7; and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring to be performed for the first time in the CSO’s history. You do not want to miss a single beat of the season!

As in previous seasons, we have invited some dynamic young artists to join the CSO. Featured next season are Jennifer Frautschi with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, Geoffrey Duce with Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 and Wesley Baldwin with Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. I have also invited one of my favorite conductors and a mentor to guest conduct the CSO during this exciting season. Peter Bay will conduct the Prokofiev Symphony No. 5 and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, which is a collaboration with Chattanooga’s own String Theory. This performance will truly be inspiring!

In our Luken Holdings Pops Series, Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt and I will bring you the annual traditions of Home for the Holidays and Big Band Fever, along with tributes to Broadway’s Rodgers and Hammerstein plus the Gershwins. Our Chamber Series is still going strong with sell-out or near sell-out audiences, and we’re excited to perform for a second year at the Volkswagen of Chattanooga plant.

We look forward to sharing this thrilling season. Thank you for your support and for your love of the CSO.

BOB’S BOOTCAMPS

Musical TravelogueSaturday, November 16, 2013 from 11:00am-2:00pmTravel around the globe as Bob highlights classical works that are reminiscent of the country for which they were written. Countries featured along the way are England, France, Spain, Austria, Italy and more.

If on a Desert Island…Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 11:00am-2:00pmBesides the requisite water and other basic necessities of survival, Bob dreams of what music he couldn’t live without if stranded on a desert island. Classical Chutzpah!Saturday, February 15, 2014 from 11:00-2:00pmClassical Chutzpah is a look at composers who challenged the musical conventions of their times, premiering works that shocked their audiences. A classic example is the riots during the 1913 premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

Understanding GershwinSaturday, March 22, 2014 from 11:00-2:00pmBob reflects on the life and music of George Gershwin, the American composer and pianist who produced some of the most highly memorable melodies from the 20th century.

For 80 years the Chattanooga Symphony &Opera has been an instrumental part of our community, providing a superb orchestra that enhances the region’s quality of life and economic vitality. Proceeds from ticket revenues account for less than 40% of CSO’s annual operating budget, which is why your support is so important.

Your gift will help ensure that the CSO can continue to provide the level of musical programming that we have for decades. Contributions also support our extensive education programs that reach more than 25,000 area students a year and expose a new generation to music they may have never heard.

Orchestrated For Success CampaignOur Annual Fund is the heart and soul of funding for the CSO. It helps to sustain our artistic vision, excellence in performance and programming, allows us to have a strong community presence, and ensures there is a world-class orchestra available for you to enjoy right in your own backyard.

Planned GivingBy making a planned gift to the CSO Endowment Fund, you help ensure the music will be here for generations to come. It takes a simple designation in your will to leave your own legacy of music. Planned gifts can be made through a variety of ways, all of which can offer significant tax savings. Your gift will help continue this legendary tradition of excellence.
