UNCW softball Head Coach Kristy Norton

Kristy Norton, who helped transform James Madison into one of the top softball programs in the Colonial Athletic As-sociation, is in her fi rst season as head coach of the UNCW

softball program. Norton is just the fourth coach in the 28-year history of fast-pitch soft-ball at UNCW. “We’re delighted to have Kristy as part of the Seahawk family,” said UNCW Director of Athletics Jimmy Bass. “She was an outstanding player during her collegiate career and that strong pedigree has carried over into coaching. Kristy is one of the bright young coaches in the college game. We’re looking forward to seeing the program make signifi -cant progress under her tenure.” Norton joined the Seahawks after spending seven seasons with the Dukes and carry-ing the Harrisonburg, Va., school to its fi rst CAA tournament crown and NCAA Tourna-ment berth in 2009. Under Norton’s instruction, JMU featured the best offensive season in the program’s history in 2007, setting single-season marks for batting average (.311), slugging percent-age (.472), runs scored (278), home runs (42), and RBI (264). The Dukes were ranked nationally in batting av-erage (14th), slugging percentage, (24th) and runs scored (36th) en route to a school-record 37 victories that sea-son. Norton had 24 players receive a total of 42 All-CAA and CAA All-Rookie Team accolades during her time with the pro-gram, while two players, Ashley Burnham and Jenn Chavez, earned CAA Player-of-the-Year

honors under her tutelage. Chavez was the fi rst Duke to earn the award in 2007 and Burnham was the league’s fi rst two-time recipient (2010 & 2012). “This is a fantastic opportunity and a great chance for me to really challenge myself as a coach,” Norton said. “I look forward to working with the players as we build the Sea-hawk program into something the entire Wilmington community can be proud of.” Norton began her collegiate coaching career at her alma mater, serving two seasons as an assistant coach at UNC Greensboro (2003-04). Norton worked with the team’s outfi elders and hitters, developed the team’s strength and conditioning program and coordinated travel arrangements. She also served as head coach of the Carolina Wild-cats, an 18-under travel softball team, from 1999-2002 Norton enjoyed an outstanding collegiate playing career for the Spartans, earning All-Southern Conference and honorable mention All-South accolades during her four-year

career (1999-2002). A durable sec-ond baseman that set team records for games started (252) and at-bats (785), Norton was also profi cient at the plate, ending her career second on UNCG’s career list for hits (222), doubles (41) and fi fth in runs batted in (106). A native of Fayetteville, N.C., Norton earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science with a minor in coaching from UNCG in 2002. She completed her Master’s in Recreation and Sports Management in 2005.

UNCW softball Assistant Coach Meredith Felts

Former James Madison standout pitcher Meredith Felts is in her fi rst season as an assistant coach with the UNCW softball program. Felts joined the Seahawks after two seasons as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern, where she helped the Buccaneers advance to the Big South Conference Championship for the fi rst time since 1988. She also made a signifi cant impact with the CSU pitching staff during her time in the Low Country, steering the Buccaneers’ rotation to a new single-season mark for strikeouts each season and ranking near the top of the league in earned run aver-age. “Meredith will be a great addition to our staff and her appointment marks another step toward moving our pro-

gram in a positive direction,” said Norton. “She’s a true student of the game and an outstanding pitching coach. A phenomenal player at JMU, she brings a wealth of softball knowledge to our program and has a bright future ahead as a collegiate coach.” Felts began her coaching career as an assistant coach for the Mannheim (Germany) Tornados Juniors in 2009, where she planned and implemented team practices and as-sisted in game day operations. She then spent the 2010 season as an intern with the softball program at UNC Chapel Hill, serving as tournament director for multiple home tournaments and also assisting the Tar Heel program in scouting, recruiting, game day operations, practice planning and simulating opposing pitchers in practice. No stranger to the Colonial Athletic Association, Felts was a four-year letterwinner at JMU from 2006-09, fi nishing her career as the school’s all-time leader in wins (61), ERA (1.62), games started (85), complete games (52), strikeouts (581) and shutouts (20). A three-time All-CAA selection, Felts sparked the Dukes to the program’s fi rst CAA Cham-pionship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2009, earning Most Outstanding Player and All-Tournament Team accolades after posting a 2-0 record and a 0.58 ERA in two starts during the event. She was named to the CAA’s 25th Anniversary Team in honor of the league’s Silver Anniver-sary in 2010. A native of Greenville, N.C., Felts graduated from James Madison with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and a mi-nor in General Business in May, 2010.

UNCW softball Fort Bragg Visit

Prior to the start of the 2013 season, the UNCW softball team traveled to Fort Bragg, N.C., to complete the leaders reaction course.

The leaders reaction course is a strategic obstacle course usually used by soldiers to promote small unit cohesion and problem solving.

Although each obstacle has its own specifi c challenges, all entail maneuvering each member of the team and pieces of equipment from one side to the other, across platforms of varying heights, using only wooden planks to avoid restricted areas. Unlike a normal ob-stacle course which requires brawn over brains, the LRC demands planning and cooperation.

UNCW Head Coach Kristy Norton coordinated the event as a team-building ex-ercise. After growing up in a military family, Norton wanted the team to get a feel for what service members do, while learning their own strengths and those of their teammates.

Paratroopers assigned to 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, over-saw the event to explain the requirements of each station and ensure the course was completed safely. The 22 players were broken down into three teams, one team per station.

After receiving instructions on their respective station they were given 10 minutes to plan their attack. They strat-egized the best ways to utilize the different-sized planks to reach various points in each obstacle and when to move ammo cans and barrels to get them safely to the objective.

UNCW softball Boseman Field

2013 softball Virtual Guide

Recent upgrades have made Boseman Field, UNCW’s softball diamond, a spec-tacular jewel on the athletic campus. The regulation fi eld features a batting cage, scoreboard, in-ground dugouts bullpens and permanent seating. Lighting was added to the facility in the spring of 2002 and a spacious press box, featuring a concession stand, updgraded sound system, storage and working area for the media, was constructed in 2002-03.
