2012 FALL RECAPStephen F. Austin Invitational (9/28/12 - 9/29/12)NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The ULM tennis team completed day one at the SFA Fall Invitational on Friday to open its fall schedule. Junior Medy Blankvoort and sophomore Silvia Tumova will play for their respective flight championships on Saturday.

Blankvoort defeated Sheridan Currie of Sam Houston State in straiight sets (6-1, 6-3) and then was victorious Polina Konop from Northwestern State (6-3, 4-6, 10-5) to advance to the Flight A Singles Championship.

Tumova will play for the Flight B Singles Championship on Saturday after defeating Lara Bogdan of Lamar in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) and Natalie Petaia from Sam Houston State (6-4, 5-7, 12-10).

Freshman Iris Van Leeuwen dropped her first two matches as a Warhawk. First to Nadia Dubyanskya of Sam Houston State (6-2, 6-2) and Daniela Simonova from Northwestern State (6-1, 6-2).

In doubles play, Blankvoort and Tumova dropped its first match in Flight A Doubles to Konop and Nataly Krutova from Northwestern State (9-7). However, after a bye in the bottom part of the bracket they knocked off Tatyana Postnikova and Dubyanskaya of Sam Houston State (9-7) to win the back draw of Flight A Doubles. Day two was canceled due to rainy conditions.

UL-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajun Classic (10/5/12 - 10/6/12)LAFAYETTE, La. -- The Warhawk tennis team wrapped up play at the Ragin’ Cajun Invitational Saturday with another superb performance on the courts. Head coach Terrence De Jongh’s team finished the weekend with an overall team record of 16-2 in singles and doubles matches.

Sophomore Sophie Rufyikiri teamed up with junior Medy Blankvoort to start the Warhawks off on the right foot, beating the ULL combo of Ahlkvist and Burkhartt 8-0 in the “Bread Pudding” doubles bracket. Justyna Krol and Iris Van Leeuwen followed them with a 8-1 victory over SELU’s duo of Charpeene and Tokereva in the “Snoball” doubles bracket.

Rufyikiri returned to the court in singles play to beat Lamar’s Alicia Porte 7-6, 6-3. It was then Blankvoort’s turn to add to the ULM victory tally, as she rolled to a 6-1,6-3 win over Anastasia Tokereva of SELU. Krol and Van Leeuwen took over from there, both notching wins in singles play to boost ULM’s weekend singles record to 11-1.

Rufyikiri and Blankvoort suffered their first loss of the weekend in third round doubles play, as they fell to the Kriem and Nychtalova pairing from SELU 8-4. The Warhawks bounced back, however, as Krol and Van Leeuwen finished off ULM’s tournament with an 8-1 win over ULL’s Bradford and Krsmanovic.

After a fantastic weekend, ULM will have two weeks off before beginning play at the ITA Regional Championships on Friday, October 19 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

NSU Lady Demon Invitational (10/12/12 - 10/14/12)NATCHITOCHES, La. -- Day two at the Lady Demon Fall Invite hosted by Northwestern State is complete and Sophie Rufyikiri will compete for the Flight One Singles title after collecting two wins on Saturday. Also picking up singles wins were Medy Blankvoort and Silvia Tumova.

Rufyikiri defeated Tatiana Larina of Northwestern State (6-4, 6-3) and Carolina Salas of Lamar (6-3, 6-1) in straight sets to remain perfect and set up a title match against Polina Konop of Northwestern State on Sunday.

Blankvoort fell one victory short of an all-ULM final in Flight One Singles after defeating Malena Gordo of Stephen F. Austin (6-4, 3-6, 10-7) but falling to Konop (6-2, 6-4).

Tumova advanced to Sunday’s Flight Two Singles’ Final with two victories on Saturday. The sophomore controlled Valeria Terentyeva of Stephen F. Austin (6-0, 6-2) and Nataly Mayagoitia of Lamar (6-3, 6-0). Tumova will face Andrea Nedorostova of Northwestern State on Sunday.

Krol was unable to face Soledad Arroyo of New Orleans due to an injury to end her day.

There were no doubles action for ULM on Saturday but Rufyikiri and Krol will battle Polina Konop and Daniela Simonova of Northwestern State in the third round on Sunday. The final day of action was canceled due to rain.

ITA Regional Day One (10/19/12)TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The ULM Warhawks were eliminated from competition at the ITA Southern Regional Championships Saturday. The event was hosted by the University of Alabama.

ULM advanced both doubles pairs into the third round of the consolation draw before falling. At the start of the day, Sophie Rufyikiri and Justyna Krol defeated Kristin Lewis and Lauren Caballero of Samford, 8-3 and the duo of Medy Blankvoort and Silvia Tomova swept Rebekah Adewumi and Laura Rojas of Jackson State, 8-0.

Southern Miss Halloween Classic (10/26/12 - 10/27/12) HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- ULM Tennis wrapped up its fall schedule on Saturday at the Southern Miss Halloween Classic. Silvia Tumova won Green Draw Singles with a victory over Regina Nychitailova (Southeastern Louisiana), 7-6, 2-1 (Retired).

Iris Van Leeuwen defeated Stephanie Gonzalez (Central Arkansas), 6-3, 6-4, for third place in Red Draw Singles.

Justyna Krol defeated Megan Blue (Murray State) 7-6, 6-3, to win the back draw of the orange bracket.

In White Draw Doubles, Krol and Tumova defeated Buck and Murphy (Central Arkansas), 9-1, before losing to Salas and Czudek (Lamar), 8-5 in the back draw semifinals.

HEAD COACH TERRENCE DE JONGHTerrence De Jongh is entering his seventh season leading ULM women’s tennis. In 2011-12 he helped lead the Warhawks to a 76-28 singles record including a 19-4 record in Sun Belt play. ULM was 38-12 in doubles including 6-3 in Sun Belt play. Medy Blankvoort earned All-Sun Belt honors after going 16-1 overall and 4-0 in conference.

The former Louisiana Coach of the Year, De Jongh has restored the tradition proud women’s tennis program at ULM in five short years. He has led the Warhawks to 36 victories over the past two seasons and put together the longest winning streak in the NCAA of 18 matches in 2011.

De Jongh’s players have not only been successful athletically, but they have also set the standard for student-athletes at ULM in the classroom. The women’s tennis program received the NCAA Public Recognition Award in 2011 for ranking in the top 10 percent in APR across the country. ULM’s tennis program was one of just 10 overall Sun Belt programs and 11 programs in Louisiana to earn the recognition.

ULM has boasted a perfect 1,000 APR score in four of the last five seasons under De Jongh and received the most 2011 ULM Team GPA Award with a cumulative effort of 3.63.

De Jongh is responsible for suiting up arguably the best player in ULM and Sun Belt Conference history. Claire Clark dominated her competition from the moment she stepped on the courts as a walk-on in the spring of 2008. By the time she graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in 2011, Clark amassed a 63-4 overall record in dual matches in singles. As a senior, Clark lost just four sets all season long in singles en route to an 18-1 record and four Sun Belt Player of the Week awards.

Clark was named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team as a senior in addition to earning Louisiana Player of the Year honors and receiving the Sun Belt Conference Post-Graduate Scholarship Award; Clark was ULM’s first Academic All-America First Team selection since 1994.

Clark and her teammates finished the 2011 season 18-2 overall and 5-0 in Sun Belt Conference action under the leadership of De Jongh. ULM’s 18-match win streak was the longest in the NCAA and earned the Warhawks the number two seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

The Warhawks peaked at No. 46 in the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings during the 2011 season, it was ULM’s first national ranking since 2003. The season featured a 6-1 win at No. 73 Mississippi State - the Warhawks first victory over the Bulldogs since 1985 - and a 5-2 victory at Northwestern State, which snapped the Demons 20-match regular season win streak.

De Jongh’s Warhawks dominated the All-Sun Belt Conference Teams in historic fashion. ULM accounted for four of the seven players on the singles team and two of the five doubles teams. It marked the first time in Sun Belt history that a team placed four athletes on the singles team. Clark, Monica Winkel, Vivian Polak and Letha Gaigher all earned singles honors. ULM’s doubles teams of Clark and Winkel in addition to Polak and Ana Burjaili were all-conference in doubles. Gaigher also named the Louisiana Freshman of the Year.

With a trio of recruiting classes in the books, ULM’s transformation under De Jongh began in 2010 when the Warhawks finished 18-6 overall and 7-2 at home.

Clark was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American for the second straight year and earned the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. Clark was also named to the All-Sun Belt Singles team, while Burjaili and Polak were All-Sun Belt selections as a doubles tandem.

In the short time since De Jongh has taken the reigns of the program, the ULM tennis team has hosted the Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships, three fall tournaments and the first ever ULM tennis reunion for former standouts of one of the school’s most historically prominent athletic programs.

In his first five seasons on the bayou, De Jongh has led the Warhawks to a 23-8 mark at home.

The Warhawks successes haven’t been limited to the performance of the team. Individuals under De Jongh have enjoyed equal success. Under the ULM head coach, a student-athlete has posted at least 10 spring wins in an individual season on 20 occasions over the last five seasons - including a six players in 2011.

De Jongh began his Warhawk head coaching career prior to the start of the 2007 spring term. Moving from the Southland Conference into the Sun Belt Conference for the season - a league that has featured as many as four nationally ranked women’s tennis programs since ULM joined - the Warhawks started fast for their head coach. ULM won nine matches in its inaugural SBC campaign, but dropped a trio of 4-3 decisions including one at perennial league power South Alabama.

In addition to playing tough in the program’s new conference, De Jongh mentored one of the league’s top student-athletes to a postseason award. Marion Lehmann raced out to a 15-3 individual mark in her first season by the bayou and was named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Second Team. Lehmann also garnered

Newcomer of the Year accolades under the direction of De Jongh, making her the first women’s tennis athlete at ULM to receive the nod in the statewide poll.

Despite being hampered by injuries on the court that left him with only five healthy players, De Jongh’s second installment at ULM picked up eight victories on the court. Four Warhawks in the regular line-up posted at least eight individual wins during the spring while another, Clark, finished six matches above .500 in limited action.

As important as on court success has been to De Jongh, his most important move may have been securing with the assistance of ULM Director of Athletics Bobby Staub and managing the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championship Tournament. In only the team’s second season in the league, ULM tennis hosted the championship event, the department’s first since becoming a full member of the league prior to the 2006-07 competitive year.

During the 2008 fall campaign, the ULM tennis program took another big step forward by hosting a pair of open tournaments. The Warhawk Classic and ULM Invitational became the first fall tournaments hosted on the Monroe campus in more than 15 years.

De Jongh began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant coach during the 2000 season. Serving four years in that capacity, he was elevated to the position of interim head coach for the 2004 campaign and led the Lady Techsters to a 9-12 record - the program’s best mark in seven years. After having the ‘interim’ tag removed for the 2005 season, the De Jongh-led Louisiana Tech squad topped the 10-win plateau for the first time in nearly 20 seasons.

Overlapping with his time as a collegiate head coach was a four-year stint as the tennis professional at Pine Hills Country Club in Calhoun, La. After leaving Louisiana Tech following a 10-12 record in 2005, De Jongh spent one year away from college coaching before taking his current post as leader of the Warhawks.

A 1995 high school graduate of Scholen Gemeenschap on the Carribean island of Bonaire, De Jongh continued his formal education by receiving an electrical engineering degree from Ir Cesar Tarzano Junior College, located in Aruba, in 1999.

De Jongh played professionally on the International Tennis Federation circuit while representing his home country, Aruba. A strong competitor, he was ranked internationally in both singles and doubles. He would later receive a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Louisiana Tech in 2003 and his master’s of industrial organization from Louisiana Tech in 2006.

PRESIDENT DR. NICK BRUNODr. Nick J. Bruno became the eighth president of

the University of Louisiana at Monroe on Nov. 8,

2010, after more than 30 years of work in Louisiana

higher education.

Upon his arrival at ULM, President Bruno imme-

diately began reaching out to the community.

To strengthen relationships with regional health

care providers, he serves on the Board of Direc-

tors for St. Francis Medical Center. He also created

the Business & Community Advisory Committee,

a group that analyzes the workforce needs of the

region.

A Louisiana native, President Bruno arrived at ULM from the University of Louisiana System,

where he managed the business, financial and facility operations as the UL System’s vice

president for business affairs.

Prior to his appointment at the UL System, he served as vice president for business affairs

at ULM, helping revitalize the campus during a critical juncture in the university’s history.

ULM’s sister school, Southeastern Louisiana University, also benefited from Dr. Bruno’s lead-

ership. While there, he served in several capacities, including assistant vice president for

special initiatives, handling such areas as continuing education and international activities.

In addition to his higher education experience, President Bruno is regionally and nationally

recognized for his consulting expertise in areas such as organizational efficiencies and al-

ternatively financed facility construction. He has also conducted numerous professional de-

velopment programs for several national professional organizations including the National

Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO). In September 2011, the

National Association of College Auxiliary Services awarded President Bruno the Presidential

Award of Excellence.

President Bruno earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA from Southeastern

Louisiana University. He earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from the University

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BOBBY STAUBAs he begins his eighth year at ULM, director of athletics Bobby Staub can already look back at a tenure that has reshaped and redefined the Warhawks’ athletic programs. A new conference affiliation, a new mascot, NCAA certification, a sweeping overhaul of athletic facilities, development and implementation of a new strategic plan, a rebranding campaign, increases in athletic program support - all of these occurred since Staub took the helm in the summer of 2004.

Staub has played a major role in the continuing improvement of the athletic

facilities at ULM. Most recently, new scoreboards were added for baseball, softball and soccer, and a state-of-the-art high definition video board was added to football’s Malone Stadium in a project that also included luxurious renovations to the football chair back seating and new dugouts at both the ULM softball and soccer complexes. The new 15-millimeter display board is one of the largest in the Sun Belt Conference in addition to being the second largest on-campus board in the state. In addition, Staub has overseen over $3.5 million in renovations and improvements to every competition and practice facility in the past five years. Malone Stadium has a fresher look with a new state-of-the-art playing surface, renovated locker rooms and meeting rooms, and an exterior face lift with new paint all around the stadium. Fant-Ewing Coliseum’s basketball playing floor has twice been repainted with bold new looks - most recently prior to the 2011-12 season. Groseclose Track was resurfaced and a hammer cage was added. The ULM Softball Complex added a new two-story building that houses the Warhawks’ locker room, coaches’ offices and game-day operations area and additionally a brick backstop was installed. The visitors’ locker room and public restrooms are located in yet another new building. The soccer team moved into a new home at the brand-new ULM Soccer Complex, which includes a fieldhouse with a locker room/meeting room and offices and is located to the east of Malone Stadium along Bon Aire Drive. Heard Stadium - home to the tennis team - received a makeover in 2008 as the courts were stripped and resurfaced. Staub was named ULM’s 12th director of athletics on June 30, 2004. His first challenge was the impending transition of the department conference membership from the Southland Conference to the Sun Belt Conference. ULM had previously joined the Sun Belt as a football-only member in 2001 and later opted to bring all programs under the Sun Belt umbrella. The Warhawks have already achieved on-the-field success in their new league, winning titles in men’s basketball and baseball in the first two years. Staub also led efforts to bring Sun Belt Conference championship events to Monroe. ULM has hosted three championship events over the last four years (tennis, 2008; cross country, 2009; baseball, 2011). The Warhawks clinched the 2012 Sun Belt Baseball championship and made its first NCAA regional appearance (Baton Rouge) since 2000. Staub’s influence has been noted in areas away from the playing field as well. Under his watch, ULM athletics has twice received recognition for achievements in diversity. Honored in 2005-06 and 2006-07, ULM was the only school in the state of Louisiana or the Sun Belt Conference to be named to the list either year. Staub has also emphasized academic achievement in the department and has put in place new measures to spur student-athletes success in the classroom. ULM’s APR rates have increased steadily since 2006 as 14 of the 16 ULM programs achieved a higher single-year score in 2010-11 compared to 2009-10. The two remaining programs (men’s golf and women’s tennis) still achieved positive marks after recording perfect scores the year before. The most recent multi-year

numbers represent the best overall marks since APR was instituted.

ULM, with a 66 percent graduation rate in 2011-12, recorded the highest single-year federal graduation rate in the state of Louisiana. ULM had a record 121 student-athletes named to the Sun Belt Commissioner’s List (3.5 or better grade point average) and Sun Belt Academic Honor Roll (3.0-3.49 GPA) during the 2011-12 academic year. Additionally, 108 student-athletes were honored at the Maroon & Gold Society banquet in May 2012, which recognizes student-athletes achieving a cumulative grade point average above 3.0.

Before coming to ULM, Staub literally worked his way through the ranks to become an NCAA Division I-A athletic director. He spent 20 years at UAB, advancing from his initial role as the assistant ticket manager to marketing and promotions manager to senior associate athletics director.

Staub currently serves on the board of directors for the New Orleans Bowl and he is a member of both the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. During his tenure at ULM, he has served as the Sun Belt Conference athletic directors chairman as well as on the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Auburn in 1982. He is married to the former Laura Vaughan of Gainesville, Ga., and the couple resides in Monroe. Staub and his wife serve on the board for Young Life in Ouachita Parish an organization that he also serves as advisor for on the ULM campus.

RAYMOND HEARD STADIUM

Constructed in 1976 and dedicated shortly thereafter, Raymond Heard Stadium has been home to the ULM tennis team for over 30 years. One of the region’s top facilities, the home of the Warhawks opened its gates to a pair of fall tournaments in 2008 for the first time in over 15 years. Since its inception, Heard Stadium’s courts have been home to nine women’s conference championship teams and a pair of All-Americans. The nationally recognized men’s team also picked up 16 conference championships, including seven straight leading into the 1998 season - the program’s last year of NCAA competition. In addition to serving as home for Warhawk champions, Heard Stadium has hosted multiple conference championships over the years. Beginning with the Trans America Athletic Conference Championship (now Atlantic Sun Conference) in 1980, the Warhawks home courts have hosted seven league championship events. ULM has hosted two Atlantic Sun Championships (1980 - 1981) and four Southland Conference Championships (1982 - 1994 - 1996 - 1998) at Heard Stadium. Most recently, ULM tennis became the first Warhawk program to host a Sun Belt Conference Championship after welcoming the league’s men’s and women’s teams for the 2008 Championships. The championship event marked the first on-campus league championship tournament hosted by the Warhawks since joining the league as full members prior to Heard Stadium has also played host to a trio of National Invitational Tournaments (1982 - 1983 - 1984) and has been the host site of several United States Tennis Association tournaments. Long considered one of the premier tennis facilities in the region, the 515 seat Heard Stadium recently underwent a face-lift to prepare it for the Sun Belt Conference Championship. Featuring 15 fully illuminated courts and elevated grandstand seating, the home of the Warhawks provides an excellent venue for tennis fans to catch collegiate action. The courts were resurfaced for the 2003 regular season and again prior to the 2008 campaign. In addition to the courts and spectator areas, Heard Stadium also features two full locker rooms, offices for the ULM coaching staff, and a break room for tournament officials and visiting media.

ULM TENNIS WINS SEASON OPENER AGAINST MCNEESE STATE 6-1MONROE, La. - The ULM tennis team cruised to victory in its first match of the season with a 6-1 defeat of McNeese State Saturday afternoon in Heard Stadium. The Warhawks swept all three doubles matches and all but one singles match to extend their home win streak to nine-straight, dating back to the 2010 season.

ULM (1-0) gave up just one game on the first two courts during doubles play as Medy Blankvoort and Monica Winkel blanked Andreea Nenu and Diana Pirciu 8-0 on court two. Silvia Tumova and Sophie Rufykiri clinched the doubles point with a quick 8-1 result on court two and Vivian Polak and Ema Turdija closed out doubles play with an 8-6 win.

The dominant performance continued during singles play as the Warhawks won in straight sets on the first five courts, led by Tumova at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Pirciu. Rufyikiri gave up just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 routing at No. 2 and No. 88 nationally ranked Polak took No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-0.

Blankvoort easily took down Tea Tvrkovic on court one 6-1, 6-1 and Winkel battled through the first set before claiming a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3, the Warhawks totaling just nine dropped games through the first five singles spots. McNeese State’s (0-1) lone point came on court six where Marcella Castaldi defeated Isabelle Rocher 6-2, 6-3.

ULM returns to the court tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Alcorn State at 1:30 p.m. in Heard Stadium to wrap up its home opening weekend.

WARHAWKS BLANK ALCORN STATE 7-0, EXTEND HOME WINNING STREAK TO 10-STRAIGHTMONROE, La. - The ULM tennis team swept all six singles matches and all three doubles matches to defeat Alcorn State in dominant fashion 7-0 Sunday afternoon at Heard Stadium and close its opening weekend. The victory pushes the Warhawks’ home winning streak dating back to the 2010 season to 10 consecutive matches.

Medy Blankvoort and Monica Winkel breezed to an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and Sophie Rufykiri and Silvia Tumova won the No. 2 match 8-3. Ema Turudija and Vivian Polak sealed the doubles action with an 8-2 win on court three, marking the 20th straight match ULM (2-0) has claimed the doubles point dating back to a sweep against Texas-Pan American on Jan. 23, 2011.

Five Warhawks moved to 2-0 in singles play this season, led by No. 88 ranked Polak who dispatched Arielle Buchman 6-0, 6-2 on court five. Three ULM players finished with identical 6-2, 6-1 results including Rufykiri on court one, Blankvoort on court two and Tumova on court four.

TENNIS ROLLS PAST DELTA STATE 7-0 CLEVELAND, Miss. - The ULM tennis team dropped just 12 games between doubles and singles play to win a commanding 7-0 decision over Delta State on the road at University Courts. The Warhawks move to 3-0 to start the 2012 season.

Silvia Tumova and Sophie Rufykiri were flawless on court one in doubles action with an 8-0 thumping of Lisa Jamais and Erin Teivans. Medy Blankvoort and Monica Winkel on court two and Isabelle Rocher and Vivian Polak on court three finished with identical 8-1 results to secure ULM’s 21st consecutive doubles point since their second match of the 2011 season.

Rufykiri improved to 2-0 at No. 1 singles this year after defeating Maria Moya Morales 6-0, 6-1. Blankvoort and No. 88 ranked Polak also claimed 6-0, 6-1 victories on courts three and six, respectively.

Winkel and Tumova played at No. 2 and No. 4 singles and defeated opponents Teivans and Tora of Delta State (0-1) with 6-1, 6-2 results. TENNIS REMAINS UNBEATEN WITH 6-1 WIN AT NICHOLLS STATETHIBODAUX, La. - The ULM tennis team lost only four sets in its nine combined matches, downing Nicholls State 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex. The Warhawks have won four consecutive team matches to open the 2012 campaign.

ULM’s Sophie Rufyikiri and Silvia Tumova downed the Nicholls State tandem of Catherine Gauthier and Marina Ljoshevska 8-5, and Monica Winkel and Medy Blankvoort followed with an 8-6 win over Parija Maloo and Janna Leeuwerik to claim the doubles point for the Warhawks.

TENNIS DROPS COMPETITIVE 4-3 DECISION AT MISSISSIPPI STATESTARKVILLE, Miss. - The ULM tennis team earned three hard-fought singles points before ultimately dropping a 4-3 verdict at Mississippi State Thursday evening at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

The Warhawks (4-1) received a strong performance from Silvia Tumova, whose 6-1, 6-1 singles win in straight sets over Olesya Tsigvintseva gave ULM its first point of the match. Vivian Polak moved to 5-0 in singles play this season with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Petra Ferancova.

Medy Blankvoort swept Khrystyna Pavlyuk 6-3, 6-2 to give the Warhawks a 3-2 overall lead. Mississippi State’s (3-1) Ekaterina Iakovleva squared the match with a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Sophie Rufyikiri. Naomi Tran clinched the team win for the Lady Bulldogs with a come from behind 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over ULM’s Isabelle Rocher.

The Warhawk duo of Polak and Ema Turudija dropped Ferancova and Pavlyuk 8-5 to even the doubles portion at one-all. Iakovleva and Tran defeated Rufyikiri and Tumova 9-7 in a tiebreaker to claim the doubles point. ULM held a 7-5 lead before the Mississippi State pair rallied for the win in the four-plus hour match.

ULM TENNIS SHUTS DOWN SOUTHERN MISS 6-1MONROE, La. - The ULM tennis team rolled past Southern Miss 6-1 at Heard Stadium to conclude a three-match homestand Sunday afternoon. The Warhawks dominated with all three wins in doubles play and dropped just one singles match to move to 6-2 overall this season.

Vivian Polak and Ema Turudija paired up on court three to win the first match of the day, losing just one game to take down Mackenzie Oskin and Moorea Williams 6-1. Sophie Rufykiri and Silvia Tumova secured the doubles point by winning 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Medy Blankvoort and Monica Winkel provided the sweep with an 8-3 win on court one.

Blankvoort continued her stranglehold on singles play this season by dropping just one game to defeat Oskin in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 on court three. She moves her undefeated streak to 8-0 this season, and has won nine straight matches dating back to last season.

No. 108 ranked Polak cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles while Turudija also gave up just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 thrashing of Frances Askew in No. 6 singles.

Winkel and Tumova also won both their matches in straight sets, with Winkel handing Alex Bradley a 6-4, 6-1 defeat on court five. Tumova was the final match of the day to finish, as she pulled out a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3 win over Kate Lanier to move to 3-0 on the season at No. 2 singles.

Elja van Berlo provided the lone point for the Golden Eagles (1-9), defeating Rufykiri on court one 6-3, 6-3.

The Warhawks move to 7-2 on the season and claim their third victory in a row.

Medy Blankvoort remains spotless on the season and improved to 9-0 in singles action with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot. She is riding a 10-match winning streak after ending the 2011 season with a win against Denver’s Emma Isberg in the Sun Belt Conference quarterfinals.

Ema Turudija had the most dominant performance of the match, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Masa Podunavac at No. 5 singles. Silvia Tumova earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court three and Vivian Polak took a 6-2, 6-1 decision, each owning identical 8-1 records in singles play.

Medy Blankvoort moved her record to 10-0 on the season with 6-0, 6-3 victory over Yana Kakovkina at No. 3 singles. Blankvoort moved her winning streak to 11 straight dating back to last season.

Other straight-set winners included Sophie Rufyikiri (6-2, 6-2) over Viktoriya Plyuta at No. 1 singles, Vivian Polak (6-4, 6-3) over Michaela McShane at the No. 4 position and Monica Winkel (6-0, 7-5) over Alina Kolegova at the No. 6 position.

Ema Turudija topped UALR’s Nina Yates 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the most thrilling singles match of the morning.

The two teams did not play a doubles point because of an alternate schedule that had singles matches played first.

ULM TENNIS SWEEPS CENTRAL ARKANSASCONWAY, Ark. - ULM notched a 4-0 victory against Central Arkansas Friday afternoon at the UCA Tennis Courts. It marked a rare two-win day as the Warhawks defeated conference foe UALR Friday morning in Little Rock, Ark.

ULM (9-2) rolled through the late afternoon match and didn’t drop a set in route to its fifth straight victory. For the second time today the Warhawks did not compete in doubles play.

ULM’s Sophie Rufyikiri picked up an easy victory against UCA’s Simona Horsikyan with a 6-1, 6-1 result at No. 1 singles. Medy Blankvoort topped Kristina Horsikyan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Monica Winkel knocked off Maribelle Siegfried 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

The decisive match came at No. 4 singles where Ema Turudija defeated Sasha Ruocco 6-3, 6-4. Silvia Tumova and Vivian Polak each led their opponents in the second set before the match was called.

ULM will have 13 days off before hosting rival UL-Lafayette Thursday (March 22) at 2 p.m.

ULM TENNIS PICKS UP 10TH WIN AFTER TOPPLING UL-LAFAYETTE 5-2MONROE, La. - The ULM tennis team started Super Warhawk Weekend off with a bang Thursday afternoon by claiming a 5-2 win over rival UL-Lafayette at Heard Stadium. Four Warhawks claimed straight-set singles victories to earn ULM’s 10th win this season.

The Warhawks (10-2) remain undefeated in Sun Belt Conference play this season, moving their league record to 2-0. They also extend their winning streak to six-straight.

Medy Blankvoort continues her run in singles play, having yet to lose a match this season with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot. She improves to 12-0 in singles action and has claimed 13-consecutive victories dating back to ULM’s final match of the 2011 season.

ULM won doubles play for the eighth time this season to take the early point heading into singles. Vivian Polak and Ema Turudija handed Sandra Ahlgvist and Hannah Appleyard an 8-4 defeat on court three, and Silvia Tumova and Sophie Rufyikiri clinched the point winning 8-6 on court two.

Milou Israel and Erin Wilbert earned UL-Lafayette’s (3-11, 0-2 Sun Belt) only doubles victory on court one, defeating Blankvoort and Monica Winkel 8-1.

Turudija also remains undefeated in singles play this year after thrashing Tara Vasovic 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot to move to 6-0. Tumova finished quickly behind Turudija by dealing Sophie van den Aarss a 6-1, 6-4 loss on court three to secure the match for the Warhawks.

ULM’s final point came after Winkel took down Appleyard at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-2. Rufyikiri and Polak suffered the Warhawks’ only losses in singles play, each equalizing their matches in the second set before falling in the tiebreaker. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ Israel defeated Rufyikiri 6-4, 2-6 (10-8), and Ahlgvist topped Polak 6-4, 2-6 (10-6).

The Warhawks hit the road to face SMU in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday at 12 p.m.

BLANKVOORT IMPROVES TO 13-0, WARHAWKS DOWN SMU 4-3IRVING, Texas - Medy Blankvoort won her 13th straight singles match to lead the ULM tennis team to its seventh consecutive victory against SMU 4-3 at Las Colinas Country Club Sunday afternoon. The Warhawks (11-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) claimed revenge over the Mustangs from the 2011 season, who handed them their only regular season loss.

SMU ranked as high as 31st during the 2012 season and remained in the top-75 through Feb. 28’s Campbell’s ITA National Ranking. The Mustangs’ (1-11) lone victory among a very competitive schedule which featured eight ranked teams was against then-No. 40 Princeton 4-3.

Blankvoort fought back from a 4-6 loss in the first set with 7-5, 3-1 results and forced SMU’s Heather Steinbauer to retire. She rolls to her 14th straight singles victory since 2011, with this match marking just the third time she had to go to a tiebreaker and the second her opponent retired in the deciding set.

The native of Huizen, The Netherlands, clinched ULM’s victory with her win at No. 2 singles after Ema Turudija and Monica Winkel defeated their opponents on courts five and six. Turudija took down Perri Anderson 6-4, 6-2, and Winkel cruised past Kris Roberts 6-2, 6-2.

Turudija also remains undefeated in singles action with a 7-0 record, improving to a seven match winning streak.

The Warhawks shut down all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point, Turudija and Vivian Polak taking a definitive 8-3 decision over Anderson and Erika Marschall. Winkel and Blankvoort won on court two 8-4, and Sophie Rufyikiri and Silvia Tumova pulled out an 8-6 win on court one.

Polak and Rufyikiri each suffered losses at No. 4 and No. 1 singles, respectively. Polak went to a tiebreaker for a second-straight match and fell 6-2, 6-7, 10-5 while Edyta Ciepulcha downed Rufyikiri 6-2, 6-2. SMU’s Ekena Fayer also picked up a win over Tumova 6-4, 6-1.

ULM returns home for the first of its final two home matches this season on Sunday. The Warhawks plays their rescheduled match against Sun Belt Conference opponent Arkansas State at 1 p.m. at Heard Stadium.

TENNIS ROLLS TO EIGHTH CONSECUTIVE WIN; BLANKVOORT 14-0 OVERALLMONROE, La. - The ULM tennis team rolled to its eighth win in a row with a dominant 6-1 defeat of Sun Belt Conference foe Arkansas State Sunday at Heard Stadium. Medy Blankvoort also remained undefeated in singles play and moved to 14-0 overall.

The Warhawks improved their conference mark to 3-0 this season and have yet to drop a match to a Sun Belt opponent. ULM (12-2) has outscored its league opponents 15-3.

Blankvoort handily dispatched Janie Nowland at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2 and claimed her 15th consecutive win since she took down Denver’s Emma Isberg at the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

“Her hard work has paid off,” said head coach Terrence De Jongh. “She’s been working hard the whole semester. It shows in her results because she’s remained undefeated, and I know she will continue to work hard to close out the season strong.”

With three matches remaining before postseason, Blankvoort is nearing the program’s first regular season undefeated finish in recent history, which dates back at least eight years.

The Warhawks made a clean sweep of doubles to take a one point advantage heading into singles play. Vivian Polak and Ema Turudija led off with an 8-3 victory on court three and Blankvoort and Monica Winkel quickly followed with an 8-4 defeat of Biljana Miloshevska and Jess Heeps-Eriksen.

Sophie Rufyikiri and Silvia Tumova fell behind early on court one against Mariana Rong and Ioanu Teu, but fought back and closed out doubles action with an 8-7 victory.

“The last two contests we’ve won all three doubles matches,” said De Jongh. “Compared to the beginning of the season, the doubles have come a long way. It shows that we are improving because of our ability to close out all three matches with wins.”

Winkel’s was the first singles contest to finish after she thrashed Ceara Howey 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot. Polak came in next after she defeated Dow with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 result on court five to end a two match losing skid.

Rufyikiri also bounced back from two straight losses over the past two contests with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-sets win at No. 1 singles.

Two Warhawks went an additional set, and Turudija also stayed unbeaten in singles play this season after she bounced back to a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 win on court four. Tamara Slijepcevic earned Arkansas State’s (8-5, 0-2 Sun Belt) lone point after she took the tiebreaker over Tumova 4-6, 6-2, 10-7.

The Warhawks close out this season’s home slate against Sun Belt opponent Middle Tennessee Friday at 2:30 p.m. ULM’s two seniors, Polak and Winkel, will be honored for Senior Day prior to the match.

WARHAWKS EARN NINTH-STRAIGHT VICTORY, 5-2, OVER MIDDLE TENNESSEEMONROE, La. - ULM rolled through singles play to defeat Middle Tennessee 5-2 on Senior Day Friday afternoon at Heard Stadium. The victory extended the Warhawks’ winning streak to nine matches and snapped an eight-match winning streak for Middle Tennessee.

“We beat a very good team today,” ULM head coach Terrence De Jongh said. “After not getting the doubles point, our girls came out hungry for singles. It was a hard-fought match with a lot of intensity.”

After dropping a thrilling doubles point, the Warhawks got straight-set victories from senior Vivian Polak at the No. 6 position, freshman Sophie Rufykiri at the No. 1 position and sophomore Medy Blankvoort at the No. 2 position to take a 3-1 advantage. Blankvoort’s victory - a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Middle Tennessee’s Lexi Brand - improved her to 15-0 on the season.

Senior Monica Winkel battled back from an early deficit to defeat Marietta Bigus 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to give ULM a 4-1 lead and seal the victory. Winkel is now 12-2 on the season, including 2-0 at the No. 5 position.

Flavia Nagayama picked up the Blue Raider’s only victory in singles action, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision over freshman Silvia Tumova at the No. 3 singles.

The match ended with freshman Ema Turudija pulling out a 6-4, 6-7, 12-10 victory in a tiebreak over Middle Tennessee’s Nayara Moraes at the No. 4 spot.

“The crowd was great for senior day,” De Jongh said. “I want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting this team and our two seniors.”

10 VICTORIES IN A ROW FOR ULM TENNIS AFTER 5-2 WIN OVER UABBIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The ULM tennis team cruised to its 10th straight victory in a row after it claimed the doubles point and four singles matches in a 5-2 defeat of UAB Friday afternoon at George Ward Park.

The Warhawks (14-2) swept all three doubles matches against the Conference USA foe, which included identical 8-3 results by Sophie Rufyikiri and Silvia Tumova on court one and Ema Turudija and Vivian Polak on court three. Medy Blankvoort and Monina Winkel also fought to an 8-7 win at No. 2.

Turudija thrashed Menanteau Mooman 6-1, 6-1 in No. 5 singles to remain undefeated on the season to move to 10-0 overall. The Warhawks have not lost a contest since she entered the starting lineup.

Tumova and Winkel also took down their opponents in straight-sets. Tumova coasted 6-2, 6-2 on court three and Winkel came in with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4. Polak won her match by default with no Blazer (6-10) to play in the sixth spot.

The top two singles positions suffered ULM’s only losses of the day, as Blankvoort was handed her first defeat of the season 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to snap a 16-match winning streak. UAB’s Paula Alvarez fought back from a first set loss to Rufyikiri to win 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.

ULM FALLS TO NO. 58 TULANE TO END REGULAR SEASONBIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The ULM tennis team battled No. 58 Tulane Sunday morning but fell 4-0 to close out the regular season at the UAB Tennis Courts.

The Warhawks (14-3) and the Green Wave (18-5) each brought winning streaks into the contest as Tulane improved to its fifth consecutive win overall and on the road this season. The loss ended ULM’s 10 match roll.

In doubles Sophie Rufyikiri and Silvia Tumova dropped an 8-4 decision at the No. 1 spot, and Vivian Polak and Ema Turudija were taken down 8-3 to lose the point. Monica Winkel and Medy Blankvoort tussled with Caroline Thornton and Caroline Magnusson, but the match was called with the score 6-6.

Blankvoort was the only Warhawk to stay up in singles action by winning the first set and leading the second 6-3, 3-2 before going unfinished on court three. Tumova and Polak’s matches at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectively, also ended mid-way through their second sets.

Tulane guaranteed its victory with wins against Rufyikiri, Winkel and Turudija. Rufiyikiri and Turudija lost with identical 6-2, 6-3 results, and Magnusson blanked Winkel 6-0, 6-0.

After both teams split the opening doubles matches, Western Kentucky’s (10-6-1) Monta Reinfelde and Madeline Phillips took a commanding 4-0 lead in the third and deciding contest. Rufyikiri and Tumova battled back to win eight of the next nine points, taking the match 8-5 and securing the crucial doubles point for ULM (15-3).

Tumova carried the steady play into singles, downing Carolina Barboza 6-0, 6-2 to extend the overall Warhawk lead to 2-0. Medy Blankvoort claimed the second straight set singles win for ULM with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Lady Topper Alex Crofford. Ema Turudija clinched the fourth and deciding match point with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Western Kentucky’s Katrina Vucina.

The Warhawks face No. 4 Denver (11-10) in the second round of the SBC Championships Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Waranch Tennis Complex.

WARHAWKS ELIMINATED IN SUN BELT QUARTERFINALS BY DENVER 4-2DENTON, Texas - The early momentum ULM built up by winning the doubles point fizzled as Denver rallied to take four singles matches Friday afternoon and win 4-2 to eliminate the Warhawks from the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championships.

It is the second year in a row the Warhawks fell at the hands of the No. 4 seed Pioneers (12-10) in the quarterfinals, and nearly in identical fashion, as they also took the doubles point to open the match at the 2011 tournament.

Originally seeded at No. 6, ULM was meant to face UALR in the first round and would have met Middle Tennessee in the quarterfinals, both opponents they defeated this season. The seedings, which are determined by ITA rankings, were revised however when it was determined the wrong results were used. It moved ULM up to the No. 5 seed, which put them on the opposite side of the bracket.

ULM (15-4) grabbed an early 2-0 lead when Sophie Rufyikiri cruised to the team’s only victory in singles on court one 6-2, 6-2 against Sophia Bergner, who was an all-Sun Belt Team selection. Medy Blankvoort fought back from a loss in the first set to force a third at No. 3 singles, which went unfinished with her trailing 1-4.

Monica Winkel was the only Warhawk to play a full third set, and fell to Steffi Rath in the No. 5 spot after she came back 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The remaining Warhawks all lost in straight sets as Elena Najera took out Silvia Tumova 6-2, 6-4 on court two. Ema Turudijia and Vivian Polak both fell with 6-3, 6-4 results in reverse order.

ULM nearly swept doubles action with Winkel and Blankvoort claiming an 8-3 victory and Polak and Turudija earning an almost identical 8-4 win at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. Bergner and Rath came back to pull out a narrow 9-8 victory over Rufyikiri and Tumova.

Sophomore Medy Blankvoort went 16-1 (4-0 in SBC) including winning 16 straight matches dating back to 2011. Blankvoort was named 2012 All-Sun Belt, marking the fourth consecutive year that ULM had All-Conference performer. She matched Claire Clark with the third highest winning percentage (.941).

Freshman Ema Turudija announced her arrival with a 11-2 record and a perfect 4-0 mark in Sun Belt play. She won 10 straight matches at one point and was part of a dooubles’ team with Vivian Polak that went 13-3 and 3-0 in conference action.

Another freshman, Sophie Rufyikiri, added some impressive deoth to the Warhawk roster. Rufyikiri went 9-9 (3-1 in SBC) and 8-8 at No. 1 singles. She teamed up with another newcomer, Silvia Tumova in doubles and the duo finished with a 12-5 record (2-1 in SBC). Tumova went 11-5 (1-2 in SBC) during her first season with ULM.

Monica Winkel and Vivian Polak both ended their careers in strong fashion. Winkel went 13-4 (4-0 in SBC) and Polak went 11-4 (3-1 in SBC). Winkel finishes her career with singles record of 55-19 (.734) and Polak concluded her Warhawk career with a 47-21 (.691).

Sixth year head coach, Terrence De Jongh, put together his third consecutive winning season and improved his ULM record to 77-46 (.620). He coached his eighth All-Sun Belt singles performer in Medy Blankvoort.

The Warhawk program went 15-4 (4-0 in SBC) in 2012 and won 10 consecutive matches including victories over Southern Miss, SMU, Middle Tennessee and UAB. ULM swept Western Kentucky (4-0) in the opening round of The Sun Belt Conference Tournament but fell to Denver (4-2) for the second consecutive season.

CLAIRE CLARK Claire Clark had one of the most illustrious careers in the history of the ULM tennis program and capped it with a phenomenal season in 2011. She went 18-1 in singles play her senior season, finishing second all-time only to herself in winning percentage (.947). She and doubles partner Monica Winkel also finished the year with a 19-1 doubles record and a .950 winning percentage, the best in ULM’s history. Her impressive play led the Warhawks to an 18-2 overall record and 17 consecutive wins, the nation’s second-longest winning streak, which garnered them a No. 46 national ranking after upsetting No. 73 Mississippi State 6-1. Clark finished her career

with just four losses in singles play after going 63-4, and holds the best career winning percentage in the history of the program (.940). Clark added to her long list of accolades by receiving two of the most prestigious of her career following her senior year. After being just one of 12 ULM students to graduate with a 4.0 cumulative GPA, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large First Team, the first Warhawk since 1994 to do so. The honor was the third of her career after landing on the second and third teams her sophomore and freshman years. She also garnered multiple honors from the Sun Belt Conference including the Sun Belt Female Postgraduate Scholarship Award, which is one of the league’s most prestigious. Her athletic achievements were again recognized as an All-Sun Belt Singles and Doubles Team selection and was the third time in her career she earned an All-Sun Belt nod. Additionally, Clark was named the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association Louisiana Player of the Year and picked up her third-straight All-Louisiana First Team Selection.

PROGRAM HISTORY All-Americans and Hall of Famers line the annals of the Warhawk tennis program, making it one of the oldest and most history-rich of ULM’s athletic teams. Starting with an undefeated 1973-74 campaign and running through the program’s entrance into the Sun Belt Conference, the Warhawks have posted double-digit wins in 24 campaigns, finished with a winning record 22 times, and claimed a conference championship on seven different occasions. The first NCAA women’s squad of any sport on campus, the tennis team started strong. In the program’s first five seasons the team went a combined 72-14. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) took notice and before the program had reached its 10th birthday, ULM had become a mainstay in the national rankings. Competing as an independent, ULM took another step forward in the 1978 season when Sherry Dunkin [pictured top left] became the program’s first All-American following a 41-12 campaign. Dunkin became the first female student-athlete in any sport at ULM to garner the honor. Six years later Maria Lindstrom [pictured top right] posted a 31-5 record at number one singles and claimed the Southland Conference title to become the program’s second All-American. Dunkin provided another first for the program and became the first female student-athlete in the ULM Athletics Hall of Fame when she was inducted in 1988. Ten years later, Dunkin was joined by Brenda Hook - the program’s all-time singles victories leader (156) and driving force behind four-consecutive AIAW top 20 rankings - in the school’s hall of fame. Dunkin, Hook, and three former male student-athletes (Jose Alvarez, Terry Moor, and Phil Trahan) in the five-person tennis contingent in the 100-plus member ULM Athletics Hall of Fame. Nine total former female student-athletes have garnered the honor at ULM, with the two from tennis representing the third-highest total for a single team, trailing only the three honorees from each the women’s basketball team and track & field squads. In 25 seasons in the Southland Conference, the Warhawk tennis squad finished outside of the top three in the league’s standings on only five occasions. ULM claimed one postseason tournament and six regular season championships as a member of the league and represented the conference in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. ULM honored this storied history - recognizing the program’s ‘founding father’ and first coach, Dr. Dwight Vines - in a reunion in October of 2008. Featuring 45 former student-athletes, as well as the current Warhawk tennis squad, the three-day event helped bridge the gap between the team’s of the past and present, while energizing the program as it began its push back to national prominence.

RESEARCH AND PARTNERSHIPS - Department of Defense U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funds a toxicology professor’s work, which ensures the safety of clean-up crews at retired military bases.

- Pennington Biomedical Research Center collaborates with ULM pharmacy and gerontology faculty to research Alzheimer’s and other life-threatening health issues.

- The Mizutani Foundation for Glycoscience, a grant-funding agency in Japan, supports the breast cancer research concept of a ULM pharmacy professor. Yong-Yu Liu, M.D., Ph.D., submitted a grant proposal to the foundation and was one of 16 funded proposals; 150 proposals were submitted from 27 countries.

- Louisiana Board of Regents awards ULM a grant to help establish a carbon dioxide - water vapor flux monitoring tower in a bottomland hardwood forest in the Russell Sage Wildlife Management Area.

- Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality awards a $564,496 grant to ULM faculty for their research of water quality data at Bayou Lafourche and Turkey Creek in the Boeuf River Sub-Basin.

- Governor’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness invests in a $3 Million Doppler radar system at ULM; atmospheric sciences faculty and students will provide crucial data to the state.

- ULM and the LSU AgCenter enter into an agreement establishing important research projects between the two institutions. ULM and LSU AgCenter researchers will explore compounds used to treat diseases based on natural products found in plants.

INNOVATIVE NEW PROGRAMS- ULM’s College of Pharmacy develops a new degree—Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences—which will provide a competitive advantage to students who choose to work in pharmaceutical sales, government regulatory affairs, and more.

- Accounting and auditing will be among the fastest-growing occupations by 2018, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. To meet that need, ULM’s - College of Business launches a new program—Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Accounting—which will empower professionals to benefit from these expanding fields.

- Both Louisiana Delta Community College and North Central Technical College in Wisconsin sign online articulation agreements with ULM.

- ULM’s Department of Toxicology develops a new certification program focused on

occupational health—ULM’s Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety, and Toxicology.

- Hanbat National University President in South Korea enters into an exchange program with ULM—a university he considers to be “one of the most advanced universities in the United States.”- Joined by Fortune 500 companies, leaders at ULM unveil the ULM President’s Academy—a new career-oriented summer program for high-ability high school juniors and seniors throughout Louisiana, and regions of Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

FIRST-RATE FACILITIES- ULM’s Human Performance Lab moves to a newly-renovated facility outfitted with equipment to gauge such health-related issues as aerobic fitness, muscular fitness and flexibility, along with total body composition. ULM’s kinesiology graduate degree is one of only six accredited master programs in the U.S. and the only American College of Sports Medicine endorsed program in Louisiana. Open to ULM faculty, staff, students, and the external community, the lab is also the exclusive testing facility for firefighters from Monroe, West Monroe and Ouachita Parish.

- Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler recognizes ULM’s Museum of Natural History for outstanding quality, inducting the museum into Louisiana’s Heroes and Heritage Trail.

- ULM, the City of Monroe, and the Monroe-West Monroe Convention & Visitors Bureau collaborate on the $1 million University Park softball complex. The complex is used year-round by area youth who compete in baseball, softball and football; the park is also used for tournaments that attract families from all over the country.

- ULM’s beautiful campus is recognized by the Monroe Garden Study League, a member of The Garden Club of America. The Conservation Committee of the Garden Club of America awarded ULM the Club Civic Improvement Commendation.

- ULM Warhawk baseball team claims the 2012 Sun Belt Tournament Championship, making its fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

- Students within the College of Health Sciences earn a consistent 100% passage rate on national licensure examinations or scores that were significantly higher than the national average.

- The United States Patent & Trademark Office awards ULM’s College of Pharmacy a patent for a new anti-cancer drug designed to control prostate cancer metastasis. Professors in ULM’s basic pharmaceutical sciences department developed the new drug based on components found in the Red Sea sponge.

- The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses presents a ULM nursing faculty member with the 2012 Novice Researcher Award.

- KEDM Public Radio, 90.3 FM, wins 14 awards in the Louisiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association Contest, including eight first-place citations.

- ULM’s former athletic trainer Robert Williams is inducted into the Louisiana Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame for serving more than 30 years as an athletic trainer at ULM.

- Col. Joanne F. Sheridan (B.A. ’83), the Louisiana National Guard’s assistant adjutant general-Army, is promoted to the rank of brigadier general and has the one-star insignia pinned on her uniform. Ouachita Parish offers a great combination of southern charm with

a small town feel, urban amenities and suburban comforts. Located on the banks of the Ouachita River in Northeast Louisiana at the crossroads of Interstate 20 and U.S. Highway 165, the area has a mild climate, friendly neighbors and a host of recreational opportunities. The new Monroe Regional Airport is the gateway to the region with

air service to Dallas, Houston and Atlanta. In addition, Ouachita Parish is home to the new Greater Ouachita Parish Port, an inland container port that connects Ouachita Parish industry with the world.

The Monroe community is linked with some of the biggest names in business. Delta Airlines and Coca Cola trace their beginnings to Monroe and CenturyLink, the nation’s third largest telecommunications provider, is headquartered in Monroe. Monroe is home to the University of Louisiana at Monroe, which offers exceptional undergraduate and graduate programs and has an enrollment of 8,500 students. The region is also home to Louisiana Delta Community College. For

SUN BELT CONFERENCE

Formed in 1976 the Sun Belt Conference quickly rose to the greatest heights of col-legiate athletics by sending a team to the NCAA Final Four in the league’s first year of existence. Fast forward 36 years and the league again finds itself at the pinnacle of collegiate athletics as a member of the 11-league alliance of the Bowl Championship Series.

During the 2012-13 season the Sun Belt Conference’s membership will consist of Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, South Alabama, Troy and Western Kentucky University. Ten of the 11 current Sun Belt members play football at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level.

As the conference moves forward to the year 2013, the league will be comprised of 12 members with Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Georgia State, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Middle Tennessee, South Alabama, Texas-Arlington, Texas State, Troy and Western Kentucky University. The reformatted league will have 10 football playing members of the 12 total members. The league’s new look will feature two evenly matched and geographically logical divisions divided into an East Division and West Division.

Because of its status as a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA’s 18-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legisla-tion and guidelines.

The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league and its member institutions. The Sun Belt Conference signed a new multi-year agreement with ESPN, Inc. in 2012 that will result in unprecedented national coverage for the league. Fans of the Sun Belt Conference can look forward to seeing more Sun Belt teams playing on national television on ESPN and ESPN2 and additionally the new ESPN deal will result in more coverage on ESPNU. ESPN will continue to televise the conference’s men’s basketball championship game for the 32nd straight season in 2013, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country.

The conference’s regional television partnership with Comcast/Charter Sports South-east (CSS) and Cox Sports Television (CST) enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach millions of households. The addition of volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference’s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history.

Success has been easy to find in recent years as well.

Since the 2007 football season, the Sun Belt Conference ranks fifth out of the 11 FBS conferences in postseason bowl game winning percentage. In fact, the Sun Belt Conference ranks ahead of noted “Big Six” leagues – the ACC, Pac-12 and the Big Ten. Furthermore, the Sun Belt Conference outpaces its non-automatic qualifying BCS partners in the WAC, Conference USA and the MAC.

The world has taken notice of the Sun Belt Conference as well. Proof of that comes as the league now has two automatic tie-ins to postseason bowl games. The R+L Carri-ers New Orleans Bowl agreement with the Sun Belt Conference ensures that a Sun Belt team will play in that bowl game through 2013 (the league has sent a team to that game every year since the game’s inception in 2001). The Sun Belt Conference also recently signed an extension with the GoDaddy.com Bowl, played annually in Mobile, Alabama, that will ensure that a Sun Belt team plays in that bowl game through 2017.

Sun Belt member institutions showed continued progress with the latest release of the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores and the future of the league’s APR scores looks bright as well. In 2011, the Division I Board of Directors voted to move the mini-mum academic standard for postseason participation from 900 to 930. Additionally, the previous benchmark score of 925 that could result in sanctions will also change to 930. The new postseason eligibility structure will take effect in the 2012-13 academic year, with a two-year implementation window before the benchmark moves from 900 to 930. For access to postseason competition in 2012-13 and 2013-14, teams must achieve a 900 multi-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years to be eligible. Fortunately for the Sun Belt, the good news is that 94 percent of current member institutions are already scoring at or above the 930 mark. The most recent APR scores are multi-year rates based on the scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

Prominent Sun Belt alumni include NFL Hall of Fame football player “Mean” Joe Greene (North Texas) former All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former All-Star baseball player Mike Lowell (2007 MLB World Series MVP, FIU), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (Louisiana-Monroe) and actor Andy Garcia (FIU).

The conference’s first 36 years have also produced numerous individual national cham-pions along with Olympic track medalists including Earl Bell, Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State), Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (FIU). Old Dominion’s Anne Donovan, who received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation’s top women’s basketball player in 1983, helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal in 1984 and helped the Lady Monarchs capture the national championship in 1985.

ULM EARNS ELITE CERTIFICATION FOR ATHLETIC COUNSELORS ULM has become only one of 20 institutions in the country to earn certification for athletic counselors from the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics or N4A.

N4A offers certification to college and university academic support programs for student athletes through an extensive and rigorous application process.

The purpose of program certification is to ensure that an academic support unit can provide a basic set of services to student-athletes.

“The level of professionalism demonstrated by the academic counselors and the entire staff in pursuing this accreditation is remarkable,” commented Brett Bennett, assistant professor and head of ULM’s department of Radiologic Technology.

Bennett serves as the university’s Faculty Athletic Representative.

“Since Dr. Bruno arrived and made the structural changes to the athletic department, we have seen the academic performance of the student-athlete improve greatly,” continued Bennett.

According to the N4A website, certification demonstrates that a program uses industry-respected standards and best practices. Certification can improve overall performance, remove uncertainty, and widen market opportunities.

Certification also helps to demonstrate that the university support program for student-athletes is run effectively.

“We certainly are excited about this recent honor,” said Bobby Staub, ULM Athletic Director.

“It validates the approach we’ve taken, which has been made through the tireless efforts of so many on our campus, particularly our academic counselors. This is truly great news and well deserved.”

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Academic support programs for student-athletes are designed to assist them with their goal of graduation. Recognizing which universities and colleges have a demonstrated commitment to the academic support of student-athletes is critical information for athletes to consider when selecting a school.

“Next to watching these student-athletes walk across the stage at commencement, this is about as good as it gets,” said Dr. Kathy Parker, coordinator of Athletic Academic Counseling in the Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center.

“I am lucky to have great student-athletes, coaches, and a director who are supportive of our efforts; and peers, colleagues and superiors who appreciate good work.”

“Our job as athletic academic counselors is not to make life easy for student-athletes, but to act in a manner consistent with what is in their long-term best interests,” continued Parker.

“This certification bestowed by those who are experts in the field tells me that we are doing the right things for the right reasons.”

ULM joins Louisiana State University as the only other Louisiana institution to be certified.

To earn the certification, ULM was subject to site visit to ensure that all aspects of certification were met.

“It was my pleasure to conduct ULM’s N4A certification review,” stated Christine Jackson, past N4A President and current Director of Student Services at the University of Louisville.

“The commitment that President Bruno, Athletics Director Staub, and Director of Retention Mrs. Michaelides have to the ULM’s student-athletes should be commended. To be one of twenty institutions earning an N4A certification is a tremendous honor. ULM’s dedication to their student-athletes’ well-being was evident on my visit.”

The ULM Strength and Conditioning Department is built around enhancing our athlete’s ability to perform both physically and mentally, on and off the field of play. Physically our objective is to prepare our athletes to compete at a championship level and to prevent injury on and off the field. This is attained by training at a maximal level

and incorporating both sport specific and position specific exercises in the weight room and on the field. Our various “prehab” techniques and close partnership with the Athletic Training Department allows us to keep our athletes safe

and prevent injury before it occurs. Mentally our objective is to prepare our athletes for the rigors and demands of competition on the field and in life. THE RISE OF THE WARHAWKS Moving into the Sun Belt Conference in the 2006-07 season, ULM’s athletic department completed a transformation of sorts. Unique to the program, ULM’s Warhawk moniker is the only one at the highest level of NCAA competition and one of only two Warhawks at any collegiate level in the entire nation.

ULM’s Warhawks provide fans with multiple points of pride to rally behind. The mascot holds local historical connection to the P-40 ‘Warhawk’ airplane flown by northeast Louisiana’s General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers of WWII. The Warhawk is also symbolic of the red-shouldered hawk, a local predatory bird commonly found nesting along Bayou DeSiard and soaring above ULM’s athletic facilities year round.

On August 30, 2006, ULM mascot ‘ACE THE WARHAWK’ landed. Wearing bomber jacket, flight helmet and goggles, Ace has provided a perfect representation of the dual meaning of ULM’s mascot. Less than two months later, WARHAWK I, a live red-shouldered hawk permanently housed at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo in Monroe, La., was added to the ULM family of mascots. Warhawk II now resides at the zoo.

Since their arrival, ACE and Warhawk II have become vital parts of the ULM community. Including appearances at home athletic events and other activities around campus, the duo rally fans to help the Warhawks achieve victory. The pair also make appearances across the Monroe and West Monroe community, providing educational opportunities

for ULM’s youngest fans.

The ULM Jr. Warhawk Club is a special membership group for Warhawk fans age 12 and younger. One-year memberships are available and members receive season tickets to all home Warhawk athletic events, a Jr. Warhawk Club t-shirt, membership card and invitations to exclusive Jr. Warhawls Club events.

The rafters at Fant-Ewing Coliseum are full and the trophy cases across campus are overflowing with the fruits of ULM’s athletic successes. Beginning with a men’s cross country and track and field conference championship in 1958-59, the Warhawks have a storied run at the top of the standings in each sport over the athletic program’s history.

From national championships to basketball Final Fours and collegiate baseball World Series appearances, fans at ULM have become accustomed to watching their teams compete - and win - at the highest level. The Warhawks have advanced to the national semifinals of major tournaments in six different sports and ULM has claimed more than 90 conference championships.

The ULM men’s squads have claimed all-sports titles 14 times, including four in the Gulf States Conference (1963, ‘64, ‘65, ‘69), the Atlantic Sun (1980, ‘81, ‘82), and the Southland Conference (1984, ‘88, ‘90, ‘91, ‘92, ‘93, ‘94). The ULM women have grabbed all-sports titles six times in the Southland Conference (1984, ‘85, ‘87, ‘88, ‘90, ‘94). During the 1984 SLC season, ULM became the first program in conference history to win all sports titles on both the men’s and women’s side. The Warhawks would accomplish the feat three more times.

After conquering the Southland Conference, ULM made the move to the Sun Belt Conference and has continued its winning ways. Before the Warhawks had even become full members of their new league, the team had won a football conference championship in 2005. One year later, ULM won a divisional title in men’s basketball and followed that up one season later with a 2008 regular season championship in baseball.

15Ben SheetsBen Sheets was a consenus All-American for ULM in 1999, helping the Warhawk baseball team to the regular season Southland Con-ference title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Sheets finished the season 14-1 with a 3.11 ERA and 158 strikeouts in 115.2 innings of work. He was the No. 10 overall pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1999 MLB Draft, and he went on to help the United States to the gold medal during the 2000 Olympics. Sheets made four All-Star games in eight seasons with Brewers and was the NL starter during the 2008 game played at historic Yankee Stadium.

12Glynn SaultersGlynn Saulters was one of the most prolific scorers in ULM history, netting 2,134 points from 1965-68. Saulters registered over 30 points on 21 different occassions, including the highest scoring game in school history -- 51 points against Nicholls State during the 1967-68 season. A two-time All-American, Saulters also ranks in the top five in school history in scoring average (23.5 ppg) and free-throw percentage (.826). He earned Gulf States Player of the Year honors in both the 1966-67 and 1967-68 seasons. Following his ULM career, Saulters helped the U.S. National Team to the gold medal at the 1968 Olympics. He also played one season with the New Orleans Buccaneers of the American Basketball Association (ABA). Saulters is a member of the ULM Athletics Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.

11Stan HumphriesStan Humphries quarterbacked ULM to the 1987 I-AA National Championship, passing for 1,397 yards and 11 touchdowns in the four playoff wins. He was a first team All-American and the Southland Conference and Louisiana Offensive Player of the Year. Humphries finished his two-year career with 4,395 pass yard and 29 touchdowns. He played in the NFL for 10 years, first with the Washington Redskins. He also led the San Diego Chargers to the franchise’s first and only Super Bowl appearance in 1995.

40Joe ProfitA picture of speed and power, Joe Profit was the all-time rushing leader in the Gulf States Conference with 2,818 yards, which was also the ULM record when he completed his career. The total still ranks fourth in school history. He was all-GSC three straight years, including being named conference Athlete of the Year and AP first team All-American in 1970. He is ULM’s only first round NFL pick, going to the Atlanta Falcons as the seventh overall pick in 1971. Profit was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

31Chuck FinleyChuck Finley is best known for his stellar MLB career with the California Angels, Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals which spanned 18 seasons. Finley became the Angel’s all-time wins leader with 165 during 14 seasons with the club. He is also the only pitcher in MLB history to strike out four batters in an inning more than once. Finley made All Star appearances in 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996 and 2000. The southpaw pitched for two seasons at ULM and led the Warhawks in strikeouts in 1984 with 50 and came back with 42 as a senior. He helped the Warhawks win 34 games in 1984, at that time a school record for victories. Finley was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

24Lou St. AmantLou St. Amant guided the Warhawk baseball team for 18 seasons and became the all-time winningest baseball coach in school history with 414 victories. His teams won the Atlantic Sun Conference title in 1982 and the Southland Conference crown in 1983 when he was named Coach of the Year. He also served as assistant coach for ULM teams that won conference titles in 1968, 1969 and 1970. The 1970 team went on to the finals of the NAIA national championship tournament. Since retiring, St. Amant has worked as the radio color commentor for ULM football, basketball and baseball games.

The primary support group for the University of Louisiana at Monroe Athletics is the ULM ATHLETIC FOUNDATION. The Athletic Foundation, founded in 1956, is the main fund-raising organization for the athletics department.

WHAT IS THE ATHLETIC FOUNDATION?The ULM Athletic Foundation is the pillar of support for Warhawk Athletics. It is composed of individuals and businesses with a common mission: to raise financial support and awareness for Warhawk Athletics, positively promote all athletic events, grow our fan and donor base, and enhance the lives of more than 300 student-athletes.

FIVE WAYS YOU CAN HELP ULM ATHLETICS1. Donate to the Athletic Foundation and “Give 110 percent” of your previous year’s giving.Your gift to the Athletic Foundation allows us to provide much needed financial assistance to the athletics department. Increased funding is vital to improving and maintaining competitiveness in all 16 varsity sports.

2. Recruit friends and colleagues to buy season tickets and donate to the Athletic Foundation.Increased financial support comes from many different revenue sources. Whether participating in a special event, attending home games or making a donation, your financial support is vital to providing a championship experience to every student-athlete!

3. Make a gift toward scholarship endowments or facility upgradesIf you are interested in making a once-in-a-lifetime gift to the Athletic Foundation, we will work with you to make sure that your wishes for such an important gift are satisfied. When you make such a gift, we will continue to partner with you in shepherding the contribution as you wish.

4. Let us know if your company has a matching gift programOver 1,000 companies participate in matching gift programs which allow you to double or triple your Athletic foundation contributions. Please check with your Human Resources Department to determine if your company matches gifts for athletic scholarships. Or visit ulm.edu/giftmatch.

5. Include ULM Athletics when preparing or revising your will or estate plan.Many donors choose to make gifts such as trusts and annuities when revising their estates and wills.

These instruments allow the donor to see the benefit of planned giving while they are still able to stay involved in the athletics program. Another course of action is an outright gift as part of a will or estate plan. Both planned giving and bequests are a great plan to link your legacy to Warhawk Athletics.

2011-12 ATHLETIC SUCCESSES

The 2012 ULM baseball team defeated Arkansas State on May 27 in Bowling Green, Ky. for the Sun Belt Championship and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2000.

Wil Browning was named Sun Belt Tournament MVP. Browning went 2-0 with one save to help the Warhawks claim the conference title and secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament (Baton Rouge Regional).

Junior Daniel Mutai made his first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 10,000-meter run. Mutai also made his second appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

The ULM football team established itself as having one the best defenses in the country as it finished the 2011 season ranked eighth in the NCAA in rush defense (100 ypg) and 22nd in total defense (326.2 ypg). The rush defense totals also set a new Sun Belt record.

Zuzana Markova was named Second Team All-Louisiana after leading the Warhawks with 330 kills and 463 assists. ULM volleyball finished with its first double-digit win total (10) since 2006.

Senior Larrie Williams earned Third Team All-Sun Belt honors, averaging a career-best 14.8 points per game. Williams became the 16th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points.

Following his senior season at ULM, Richard McKay finished 11th in the javelin at the United States Olympic Trials in June. McKay qualified for NCAA Regionals all four years and made two NCAA Championship appearances in his career at ULM.

The ULM tennis team had another excellent season in 2012, finishing with a 15-4 overall record. Sophomore Medy Blankvoort led the Warhawks with a 16-1 record to earn All-Sun Belt honors.
