It’s critical to effectively quantify disability and absence/lost-time results, whether you’re just beginning the discussion around the impact of poor health on your workforce, or if you have some data and aren’t sure what to do with it. As budgets grow tighter and health-related expenditures garner ever-increasing scrutiny, it has never been more crucial to know exactly where your company stands. A baseline understanding of program performance is instrumental in learning where the trouble areas are and how to improve.

our LearnShop panel will discuss the importance of measurement and benchmarking against peers and how any employer—those with no data, some data, or lots of data—can benefit from learning more about their own disability/lost-time experience. In addition, we will focus on how to use this type of information to make the business case to the c-Suite in specific terms that are relevant to top management.

In this half day session you will learn: What data you should be capturing and why Best practices in effective data management Identify benchmarks for Absence Management Programs

How to measure cost savings and determine the roI

Implementing the ACA and the Implications for Behavioral HealthAs written, the Patient Protection and Affordable care Act of 2010, working in concert with the Mental Health Parity and Addiction equity Act of 2008, for the first time guaranteed all Americans access to a comprehensive and modern set of behavioral healthcare benefits. As the law has been implemented, a number of significant challenges have arisen but it still holds tremendous promise as a means for ensuring improved health outcomes for our nation.

former first Lady rosalynn Carter has worked for more than three decades to im-prove the quality of life for people around the world. Today, she is an advocate for issues ranging from mental health and hu-man rights to global peace, as well as a best-selling author.

following her Keynote presentation, Mrs. carter will participate in a forward-think-ing panel, addressing timely questions on Mental Health Parity, as well as discussing strategies to further reduce the stigma as-sociated with mental health disabilities.

Beyond Awareness Early Intervention in Mental Health Disability ManagementIn the information age, organizations rely more on brainpower and thinking. The high percent-age of employees stricken with mental illnesses is more than a health issue — it is also an economic and productivity issue of key strategic importance. While greater awareness and reduced stigmatisation are essential, new and innovative solutions are required to deal with the issue of mental illness in the workplace.

In this session, you will gain insight into how one strategy has significantly reduced mental health short-term disability claim durations, as well as the percentage of such claims advanc-ing to long-term disability.

The lessons learned from this session will improve your company’s understanding and response to employee mental health problems and help you develop a corporate strategy to retain your intellectual capital while minimizing the impact of today’s workplace mental health crisis.

An Employer’s Guide to Managing Mental and Behavioral Health Under the FMLA and ADAUnderstanding and managing employee issues under the Americans with Disabilities Act and the family and Medical Leave Act can be daunting. When the employee’s serious health condition is a mental health illness, the potential pitfalls multiply. often the illness manifests itself in performance, conduct, or attendance prob-lems before the employer is aware of the condi-tion. Unpredictable intermittent absences may be prevalent, and an employee may be unable to communicate effectively with the employer due to the mental health condition.

Join this session, presented by representatives of the Department of Labor and the equal employ-ment opportunity commission, for perspectives from the government agencies responsible for fMLA and ADA compliance, and get pointers from a leading absence management speaker.

A1 :: Transitional Return to Work: Learning How to Break Down the Barriersover the years we have seen that transitional work is effective. It is different from light duty and places an emphasis to return to one’s own position on a gradual basis. Despite this fact, transitional return to work continues to be wrought with negative connotations and is often compared to workers’ compensation solutions that bring employees back to work immediately following an injury. This could not be further from the truth as transitional work can also capi-talize on incremental recovery and emphasis of rTW toward the end of the recovery period.

But how do you change managers’ minds in order to attain buy-in? Learn how one company worked through concerns, challenges, and even animosity at times. Program specifics, including how to address ADA and reasonable accom-modation concerns, will be highlighted.

SpeakerSlisa trepanier Global Mobility Manager, Bemis Companykristin tugman, Ms, lPc, crc Senior Director, Health and Productivity, Unum

3-4pm

A2 :: Getting Results: Addressing Non-Medical Barriers to Return to Work The relationship between work and life is sometimes complex. While we may think of disability as stemming from a single event, employee absence and disability is more often the result of several inter-related factors. By providing resource information to employees in a timely way, employers can reduce or remove non-medical barriers that would otherwise interfere with employees resuming gainful employment.

This session will examine how intervention in cases where non-medical barriers exist can suppliment more traditional approaches to dis-ability management. Attendees will leave with tools to approach employee wellness holistically in order to facilitate their employees’ recovery, improve their quality of life, and expedite their return to work.

A3 :: Improving RTW Outcomes with Evidence-Based Medical Managementexcessive, ineffective, and even harmful interventions like unnecessary spinal surgery and high potency opioid lollipops often result in failed back syndrome, addiction, reoperation, chronic pain, and even death—adding consequences and costs long after they are approved. evidence-based medical management can curtail these abuses. Much has been said about predictive analytics and forecasting lost time using comorbid diagnoses and demographics. But, the number one predictor of rTW—more powerful than comorbid diagnosis by a factor of five—is the medical care that someone receives.

This session explores the relationship metrics between treatment and disability duration, including areas where practice patterns have gone awry.

SpeakerPhil lefevreDirector of Strategy, Work Loss Data Institute

traCk BfMLA/ADA 1:30-2:30pm

B1 :: The Impact of FMLA and ADA Compliance on EmployersThe fMLA and the Americans with Disabilities Act have had a tremendous impact on employers. This session will focus on how fMLA and ADA interplay with absence, disability, and workers’ compensation. Also explored in this session is how these laws and companion regulations can and should be integrated as a part of a strategic integrated absence and disability program. Attendees will hear from two employers how these regulations have impacted their companies, measures they have put in place to satisfy the requirements, and areas that are presenting the most challenges.

B3 :: Ways to Phrase: Strategies for Discussing ADA and FMLA Requestsemployers face increasingly greater challenges managing leave and accommodation requests. Learning and utilizing effective communication strategies with both employees and managers are essential for gathering vital information and critical decision making. The way questions and comments are phrased can often avoid potential legal implications and positively impact outcomes.

This interactive session will present tools and best practices for conducting dialogues about leaves and accommodations that effectively meet both employee and employer needs. This includes best ways for presenting the legal and policy parameters, explaining the process and scope of confidentiality, asking relevant ques-tions, probing for information, and exploring mutually acceptable and beneficial options. Additionally, suggestions for taking notes and maintaining documentation will be offered.

C1 :: External Vendor Integration—Improving the Disability Claim ExperienceWorking with multiple vendors can make the administration of Workers’ compensation, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability and Leave Administration programs complicated and time consuming. In addition, the experience can be difficult for the employee.

Westinghouse will discuss opportunities to align Disability and Workers’ compensation vendors, thus improving member experience and vendor integration, plus limiting employee confusion. reporting, sharing systems and coordination of clinical care are a few of the areas that can be integrated.

not only is connecting external partners important, but it also results in a more complete view of absence management, including both occupational and non-occupational injuries/disabilities.

The experiences of a regional hospital and medical center over the last 15 years will be shared from the perspective of Human resources and employee Health Services, with a spotlight on their pro-active return to work and stay at work programs.

Learn how this employer focused on two processes: (1) development of strategies for disability managers concerned about the ability of incumbent workers and qualified applicants to safely perform the essential functions of a job; (2) the use of essential function analysis and basic reasonable accommodation to guide absence managers to successful resolution of difficult cases.

During this interactive session, you will learn the answers to these questions, and more. What impact will a SSD claim have on your employees and your business?

How can filing for benefits early save your company thousands of dollars?

What impact does SSDI have on coBrA? Are you maximizing Medicare enrollment? Are you up to date on earnings freeze, co-LAs, and SSA rTW incentives?

In addition, you will get an inside look at an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Hearing where many SSDI cases are decided. This interactive presentation, based on an actual LTD claim, will allow for questions/answers during the mock hearing for maximum learning potential.

Understand and begin to create a safer work environment and immediately decrease the chance of workplace violence in your organization by learning the current trends, myths and strategies for lawfully confronting workplace risks.

C5 :: Missed Opportunities in High Cost Cases: Field Research on Who Fails to Recover and WhyWhat do vulnerable people need that they don’t get today–the 5 or 10% destined to “fall between the cracks” who end up with a poor outcome of a health-related employment disruption? Dr. christian has spent the last two years studying people who have been sick, injured, in pain and out of work for 5 to 10 years. Today’s medical care and claim management processes work well for the majority of people—but not for all. root causes and key obstacles to recovery are left unaddressed by current service delivery models. Learn why the traditional bio-medical approach to illness and healing does not help these people, and why a “biopsychosocial” approach works better. These stories, coupled with research findings from several disciplines, will inspire you to find new ways to deliver better service to high risk individuals.

A New Day Dawning–Impact of Private Exchanges on Disability Benefitsfor employers looking to manage benefit costs, comply with the AcA and limit their administrative burden, private exchanges are becoming a popular option to consider. Private exchanges connect employees with an array of medical and ancillary benefit options and carriers. In contrast to current platforms, private exchanges offer more benefit plan and carrier choices.

With the focus of private exchanges on medical benefits, disability coverage may be overlooked. employers considering a private exchange will need to think through how their decision to implement a private exchange will impact disability benefits, coverage options and administrative implications. Those changes will also impact carriers, their pricing and services provided. What is a private exchange? What will disability benefits look like on a private exchange?

How will absence and leave management services be provided to employers selecting a private exchange?
