Hello, My name is Winston Bennett and I am the 2013 Chair of the Kentucky-Indiana

All-Star Basketball Classic, an event to benefit the Kentucky Lions Eye

Foundation. The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation (KLEF) was created in 1954

with a mission of helping those throughout the state gain access to quality and

affordable vision care. Since its inception, the Foundation has helped

thousands of Kentuckians, adults and children across our Commonwealth.

Each year, over 20,000 Kentuckians turn to the Foundation for assistance.

The Kentucky-Indiana All-Star Classic is the organization’s signature event which raises monies to

support such programs as: free vision screenings, financial aid for medical care including surgeries,

low vision equipment that enables Kentuckians to remain in their home and research which has

resulted in the advanced treatments of vision disorders associated with blindness. Yearly, over 300

cornea tissues are recovered and used for sight restoration.

For several reasons this organization’s work is very meaningful to me. When I was a young man,

my mother needed eye surgery and then eye glasses. This organization made that possible for her.

As a young player, I had the privilege of being selected for the Kentucky All-Star team and was

honored to have been given the distinguished 1983 Mr. Kentucky Basketball Award.

As we say in the world of basketball, the KLEF mission has depth and assists individuals to rebound

from adversities associated with vision. Thank you for taking the time to review this packet and for

considering the multitude of ways in which your company could help support the Foundation’s

efforts to assist our fellow Kentuckians. Sight is a precious gift. Please join me in helping preserve

OUR HISTORY The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation (KLEF) was founded in 1954 with the mission to prevent and

cure blindness by supporting research, operating eye clinics and an eye bank. With the support of

Lions Clubs of Kentucky, KLEF strives to meet three main objectives:

• Provide quality programs and services for the conservation of sight

• Alleviate the unmet medical needs associated with sight

• Work closely with medical schools in providing sight related clinical services, research and other related medical care including treatments for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and other prominent eye diseases

The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation and the University of Louisville Lions Eye Bank are located at

301 East Muhammad Ali Boulevard, Louisville, Kentucky. In 1968, the Kentucky Lions Eye

Research Institute was built by a successful capital campaign launched by the Kentucky Lions Eye

Foundation. During the early 1980s the Foundation endowed a research chair at the University of

Louisville and in 1997 an expansion of the facility, made possible by the generosity of Lions,

resulted in the facility becoming now known as the Kentucky Lions Eye Center. The Kentucky

Lions Eye Foundation is dedicated to providing the “gift of sight” to Kentuckians and has grown to

become one of the foremost sight conservation organizations in the world.

Each year, over 20,000 Kentuckians are served by KLEF and Lion volunteers

throughout the Commonwealth, through our various programs that include:

• KidSight – provides free vision screenings to children aged 1-5 so that eye problems can be detected and treated at an early age.

• Vision Van – provides free vision screenings to adults and children at health fairs and community events across the state.

• Patron Fund – provides financial assistance for sight saving surgeries to those that can not afford it or have no medical coverage.

• University of Louisville Lions Eye Bank – provides corneas for over 300 cornea transplants a year.

KLEF programs rely on support from donations, grants and our major annual fundraiser; the

Kentucky Lions All Star Basketball Classic. The Classic was started in 1940 and has raised over

$2,500,000 to support the Foundation’s programs. The Classic matches the best Kentucky high

school seniors with Indiana’s best seniors and is the longest running All-Star game in the country. It

has produced a rich history of the intense rivalry between two 'Basketball States.' In connection with

the Classic, KLEF announces Kentucky’s Mr. and Miss Basketball. All high school coaches and

selected media are invited to vote for these prestigious titles. The selected players are designated to

wear the number one jersey on the Kentucky All Star team and play in the Classic.

The following are some of the best Kentucky basketball players of all time who have participated in

the Classic:

• Darius Miller – 2008 Mr. KY Basketball, played on 2012 UK NCAA Championship Team, now

playing in the NBA for the New Orleans Hornets.

• A’dia Mathies – 2009 Miss KY Basketball and 2012 SEC Player of the Year at UK.

• Crystal Kelly – 2004 Miss KY Basketball, 2008 Sunbelt Player of the Year at WKU, played for

Sacramento Monarchs in WNBA, now assistant coach at Bellarmine University.

• Allan Houston – 1989 Mr. KY Basketball, all time leading scorer at the University of Tennessee,

played for Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks and received a Gold Medal at the 2000

Olympics.

• Rex Chapman - 1986 Mr. KY Basketball, played on 1987 UK NCAA Sweet Sixteen Team and

played for the Charlotte Hornets, Washington Bullets, Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns.

• Winston Bennett – 1983 Mr. KY Basketball, played on 1984 UK NCAA Final Four Team and

played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat.

• Darrell Griffith- 1976 Mr. KY Basketball, played on 1980 UofL NCAA Championship Team

and was picked in the first round of draft by Utah Jazz.

• Jim McDaniels – As a child, Jim received glasses from a Lions Club in his community. He later

played in the All Star Game and went on to play in the NBA.

THE CLASSIC’S FUTURE

Kentucky All Star Classic

The Classic was originally a one game event held in Indianapolis. In 1953 the second game in the

series was added and was played in Louisville, KY. Starting in 1983 the Kentucky Classic began

traveling to different cities throughout the Commonwealth. During the past 5 years, it has been

held in Louisville and was played at Bellarmine University for 4 years. However, due to the large

crowds the Classic returned to Freedom Hall in 2012.

The Classic’s future is bright thanks to Kentucky’s and Indiana’s large population of basketball

fans! Fueled by the now lacking rivalry between the University of Kentucky and the University of

Indiana, we believe true basketball fans will come out in full force to support the Classic and to

cheer on their state. These fans are of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Many are friends,

family members and community supporters of the players in the Classic. We anticipate a sell-out

crowd in 2013 due to increased promotions and media coverage.

The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation, in connection with the All-Star Classic announces the

prestigious titles of Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball. In 2012, KLEF hosted the First Annual Mr.

and Miss Kentucky Basketball Awards Ceremony in which the top five candidates for each title were

invited to an awards ceremony set up similar to the “Heisman” award presented in college football.

The ceremony was held at the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville and served as a fundraiser for KLEF

while bringing back former Mr. and Miss Basketball’s for the announcement of the 2012 titles.

Coach Winston Bennett and his wife Peggy Bennett are the 2013 Honorary Chairs of this event

planned tentatively for March 29, 2013. Guests invited will include the nominated players, their

friends and family members, school and community sponsors, corporate sponsors, previous Mr. and

Miss Kentucky Basketball recipients, local and state leaders, basketball fans from across the state

and loyal supporters of KLEF. In addition to dinner, a silent auction and cocktail hour will be added

to the 2013 program.
