Noble One Botrytis Semillon has been awarded Double Gold for 2009 and
Trophy - Best Dessert Wine for 2008 at the 2013 Six Nations Wine Challenge.
A very proud moment for the De Bortoli family.
Through the distilled passion of three generations of winemaking, Noble
One was born. Thirty one years and 28 vintages later, this Australian wine has been decorated with 130 trophies and
396 gold medals.
This distinguished drop was served to Crown Prince Frederick and Princess
Mary of Denmark just before their wedding and presented to Pope
Benedict XVI at the Vatican.
While Darren’s grandfather, Vittorio, would have been suitably impressed with all these honours, he no doubt would have preferred to sit at your
table and discuss your life’s pursuits over a bottle of his grandson’s finest.
The De Bortoli family would like to congratulate all winners at the 2013 Six
Nations Wine Challenge.

Similar in style to the Sagrantino, this wine offers ripe fruit aromas and flavours but with darker
fruit characteristics than that of its counterpart.
More black cherry as opposed to raspberry and riper red fruit flavours.
Susbstantial but very fine grain tannins, complimented well by the acid to
produce an intense all round mouth-feel.
Sagrantino is a grape variety originallygrown in the region of Central Italy.
The style offers big velvety tannins andis dark cherry-purple in colour.
The bouquet has dark brooding red fruits and the palate displays spearmint,
rhubarb and dark cherry with liftedspicy fruits.
This wine suits the culinary style of theMediterranean along with healthy
serves of pasta.

What is the Six Nations Wine Challenge all about and how does it work?
The challenging countries are Argentina, Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America.
Unique?
Unique? Yes! This is the only wine show in the world where
the wines come in exclusively by invitation from the Judges.
”Because the wines are all selected by each of the judges
the standard of wine quality must surely be higher than any
competition of this size in the world”. Bob Campbell MW.
The Objective
The objective of the Challenge is to discover the New World
Champions by asking a judge from each country to choose their
best wines and have them all compete against each other in a
giant blind tasting of 600 wines.
Seventeen Classes
There are seventeen classes:
Sparkling; Riesling; Chardonnay; Aromatic (non Riesling);
Sauvignon Blanc; Other White Varieties; White Blends;
Pinot Noir; Merlot/Carmenere; Malbec; Bordeaux Blends;
Red Blends Non Bordeaux; Major Red Varieties; Other Red
Varieties; Shiraz/Syrah; Cabernet Sauvignon and Dessert Wine.
Each Judge is set the task of selecting 100 wines across the
17 Classes with a maximum of 10 in any one class -
the best in their country regardless of size of company and
quantity available.
During three days of intense judging the six judges score the
wines blind and their scores determine the Nation of Show,
The Wine of Show, Red and White Wines of Show. A trophy is
awarded for the top scoring wine in each of the 17 classes.
Double Gold, Gold and Medals of Excellence are also awarded.
The six international Challenge judges are all featured on the next few pages.

A Note From The President
Another exciting year for the Challenge is coming to a close and
as usual the results bring some surprises along with them. The
new player this year is the United States of America and their judge
Californian Dan Berger came into Australia determined to take some
trophies home which as you can see, he did with a vengeance!
The New World Champions is a great sub title for this Challenge
and now with the six most prominent wine producing nations in
that category we won’t see an increase from six, at least not for
the time being!
The role of Chairman rotates and this year Master of Wine
Bob Campbell moderated any issues where the judges were
‘discussing’ differences. Argentina’s Fabricio Portelli will Chair next
year and proudly informed us that this is interpreted as Presidente
in South America. Welcome Presidente Portelli for 2014!
All six judges quickly develop a friendly competitive relationship in
the judging room where the mood is positive and very fair. There
is a great deal of lively group discussion after the judging of each
class where scores are exchanged and medals determined.
Not until well after the judging room is closed and the judges return
home do they learn the identity of the winners and the names that
match the numbers by which they all worked.
The Challenge is very labor intensive for us behind the scenes
and spans almost the whole year to coordinate and manage. The
complexities of procurement and shipping reply on a great deal of
assistance from many individuals and sponsor companies. The High
Commissions, Embassies and Consulates are to be congratulated
for the support they give to their winemakers and to us. Our valued
sponsors, with special mention to Elite Wine Logistics in Sydney
and South African Airlines, are much appreciated for the support
they afford us.
Congratulations to all competing companies for having been
selected into this most prestigious Challenge.

A Note From The Chairman
This is our eleventh annual wine competition. We started in 2003
as the Tri-Nations Wine Challenge then changing to the Five
Nations Wine Challenge with the addition of Chile and Argentina
and to the Six Nations Wine Challenge this year as we welcomed
the United States of America.
The competition celebrates both uniformity, with the common
language of wine assessment shared by our six judges, and
diversity as we compare and contrast wines from many regions
and grape varieties.
There is a strong spirit of camaraderie amongst the judges.
We all welcome the chance to meet annually to taste and
assess the very best wines from six countries. That bond has
been strengthened this year by the arrival of Dan Berger, our
US selector and judge, whose experience and keen intellect
has made a great contribution to the event. The US has made
a strong showing in its first year, winning five out of 17 class
trophies, demonstrating considerable strength over a wide
range of wine styles.
Congratulations to Australia for earning first place by country
and its ninth overall win since the competition began.

A judge’s comment:
A high standard class with plenty of attractive, vibrant and
very drinkable non vintage and young vintage wines that were
generally outclassed by the power and complexity of the older
wines. The top scoring wines stood out to us all.

A judge’s comment:
This is a difficult class to judge because we have two strong
and different styles. Firstly young and refreshing and then ripe,
dense and deep. Each style is for a different type of consumer.
Also the sweetness makes another division which makes a
very diverse class to judge. Quality winemaking won the day!

This class is like the chocolate box of Forrest Gump - ‘you never
know what you’re gonna get’. From subtle and crisp modern
wines to the classic barrel fermented style. A very surprising
line up of wines and not easy to judge – however judging this
Challenge is not easy! The winning wine has a character-filled
complex and elegant nose; dry fruits and citrics, supported by
an exuberant and well structured body.

A judge’s comment:
The message of this grape is very clear no matter where the wine
comes from. So all of them are refreshing on the palate and quite
vibrant. Some are more herbaceous, the others more minerally
and citric. Those with oak give more structure but less fragrance.
When getting to know new world wines, this is the variety to start
with. The winning wine is very subtle, delicate and vibrant on the
palate very typical and with a gentle, long finish.

A judge’s comment:
This is a very strong and consistent class. The purity of
the varietal is in most of the wines, fresh and clear so the
differences are in the detail that gives wines the complexity.
None of them abused the oak, neither the concentration. The
winner is an austere wine, delicate and unusually well balanced.
Refreshing on the palate, young but complex, vibrant and with
a long finish. Very good news for wine lovers around the world.

New World pinot is a much improved varietal. There were plenty
of fine examples showing very good depth of flavor “pinosity”

rather simple but boldly fruity styles. The trophy wine is bright

depth promising to develop and age well.

great orientation, perfect ripeness with full body

A judge’s comment:
A fine class of good wines with very little variation in style with
many fine, fruity examples. A few wines were a bit ripe and
‘jammy’ but generally very nice handling of oak and acidity.
The winner is a big seductive Malbec – very accessible with

It’s amazing the different varieties and styles you can find in this

try and find typicity. I am looking for the wine that makes

Sonoma CountyZinfandel
Rancho Zabaco wines were born in
Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley, where
Zinfandel grapes have been grown for
150 years. The wines belong to the land,
an expression of the place and the
community of farmers and winemakers who
dedicate their lives to making great wine.
Often called “America’s Grape,” Zinfandel
originated in Croatia in Eastern Europe and
migrated to the U.S. in the early 19th century.
By the middle of the 19th century, Zinfandel
had made it all the way to California and was
prospering throughout Sonoma County.

A judge’s comment:
A disappointing class with many wines over-oaked and /or
showing astringent tannins. These are not necessarily wines that
will age well, although that’s probably the intention. We looked for
balance, elegance and freshness. On the plus side, there were
several beautiful wines that scored well. The trophy wine has

Argentina
Argentina has the ideal terroir for a wine industry. Covering a
territory of 2,791,810 km² Argentina is a country that enjoys
an outstanding wealth of resources and landscapes, in which
peaks coexist with plains, exuberant vegetation with absolute
deserts, woods with steppes, and glaciers with waterfalls.
There is practically no imaginable landscape that can’t be
found in this country.
This wealth of natural ecosystems includes vast, highly
productive grapegrowing regions stretching at the foot of the
Andean strip, to the West of the country, from latitude 22°
south to latitude 42° south.
Key wine industry statistics include Argentina being the
world’s 5th largest wine producer with 1.101.835.500 litres
produced in 2012. There are 948 wineries and the industry
is the 7th largest wine exporter in the world exporting
472.829.303 liters in 2012.
Argentina along with neighboring
Chile, make up the two most
important winemaking regions
in South America. The vines of
Argentina are planted mostly
around the Mendoza area, with
other vineyards scattered to the
north.
World Malbec Day is celebrated
on April 17 in more than 30 cities
around the world. Malbec and
Torrontés (A grape exclusive to
Argentina) are both Argentina’s
iconic wine varieties.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ARGENTINA
Argentina is located in southern South America, and is the
world’s largest Spanish-speaking country, and the eighth
largest country by land area in the whole world. Argentina
can be divided into six regions: Gran Chaco, Mesopotamia,
the Pampas, Patagonia, Cuyo, Argentine Northwest.
Argentina’s major geographic features include the Andes
Mountains and the coastal regions along the Atlantic Ocean.
Argentina has a temperate climate, which ranges all the way
from subtropical to subpolar (just north of Antarctica).
Argentina is very urbanized – more than 90 percent of
its population lives in the cities. Greater Buenos Aires
metropolitan area has become one of the largest urban areas
in the world. Other major cities in Argentina include Cordoba,
Rosario, Mendoza, and Tucuman. These cities offer cultural
experience, culinary pleasures, like the world renowned beef,
and dances like the Argentine Tango.
Each year, Jed’s Australian winemaking team travel to Mendoza, Argentina to produce wines that express
the unique characters of this acclaimed region.
Jed Wines are also the proud importer and distributors for several of Argentina’s top Bodegas including: Bodega Noemia,
Bodega Chacra, Bodega Colome, Escorihuela Gascon and Ernesto Catena Vineyards.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT AUSTRALIA
Australia takes up the entirety of the world’s smallest
continent or the world’s largest island, surrounded by the
Pacific Ocean on its eastern coast and the Indian Ocean on
its west. Australia is a vast country, ranking sixth on the list
of largest countries in the world. The majority of Australia
is the arid desert known as the outback, but other climates
in Australia are found around the coast, including tropical
rainforests, grasslands, and temperate coastlines.
Tourism is one of Australia’s largest industries because of its
beautiful landscapes and vibrant culture. As a large country,
the terrain of Australia varies from region to region, but much
of inner Australia is the vast and undeveloped outback, the
arid desert where the famous Uluru (Ayers Rock) is found. The
coastal regions of Australia feature pristine beaches like Bondi
Beach, or tropical rainforests. Australia is also known for its
unique indigenous species, not often found in much of the
rest of the world, including koalas and kangaroos.
Australia
The Australian wine industry is the world’s fourth largest exporter
of wine with approximately 750 million liters a year to the
international export market with only about 40% of production
consumed domestically. The wine industry is a significant
contributor to the Australian economy through production,
employment, export and tourism.
There is a A$2.8 billion domestic market for Australian wines,
with Australians consuming over 530 million liters annually with
a per capita consumption of about 30 liters - 50% white table
wine, 35% red table wine. Norfolk Islanders are the second
biggest per capita wine consumers in the world with 54 liters.
Wine is produced in every state, with more than 60 designated
wine regions totaling approximately 160,000 hectares; however
Australia’s wine regions are mainly in the southern, cooler parts of
the country, with vineyards located in South Australia, New South
Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland.
The wine regions in each of these states produce different wine
varieties and styles that take advantage of the particular Terroir
such as: climatic differences, topography and soil types.
The major varieties are predominantly Shiraz, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Pinot Noir, Riesling,
and Sauvignon blanc.
Chile
Chile’s geographic barriers - the Atacama Desert to the
north, the Andes Mountains to the east, the Patagonian ice
fields to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west - make
Chile a veritable agricultural island. This mosaic of climates
and terroirs, combined with a viticultural sector with few
regulations for growing and producing wines, explains the
success of Chilean wines around the world.
Chile is the world’s eighth largest wine producer and the fifth
largest exporter, reaching a market share of 8% by volume
of the global international wine market at the close of 2010.
However, and most importantly, Chile exports 70% of its
wine production, making it the world’s most globalized wine
industry, with great flexibility, innovation, and a long-term
commitment to quality and service second to none.
With 150 destination
countries and 1.5
billion consumers per
year, Chilean wines
are positioned as
the country’s most
emblematic and best
known world ambassador.
Chile’s own signature
grape is carmenere. This
red varietal disappeared
from European vineyards
in the mid-19th century
and reappeared among
Chile’s Merlot vines a
hundred years later.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CHILE
Chile is bound on the north by Peru, on the east by Bolivia and
Argentina, and on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean.
It has an extreme northern-southern length of approximately
4,270 km, but its average width is less than 180 km.
The country of Chile has two lively and contrasting cultures:
the cosmopolitan culture of the affluent urban population, and
the popular culture of the peasants, which is mainly Spanish
but contains traces of Araucanian heritage. The culture of
peasants is heavily reflected in their music and dance.

New Zealand
Best known internationally for sauvignon blanc, New Zealand
also has a growing international reputation for pinot noir,
chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling, cabernet sauvignon, merlot
and methode traditionnelle sparkling wines. Most of the
country’s more than 500 winemakers are boutique, small scale
operations producing low volumes of niche varieties.
New Zealand has 10 major wine-producing areas. The
leading wine regions include Auckland, Gisborne, Wairarapa
(Martinborough) and Hawke’s Bay in the North Island, and
Marlborough, Central Otago, Canterbury in the South Island.
The grape varieties, soil structure and mini-climates in these
geographical areas are varied, producing a broad spectrum of
wines.
Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay are New Zealand’s two
premium wine-growing regions.
Varieties produced include:
• sauvignonblanc-Marlborough
• pinotnoir-Martinborough,CentralOtago
• cabernet-Hawke’sBay,WaihekeIsland
• chardonnay-Gisborne
• pinotgris-Martinborough,CentralOtago
New Zealand also produces outstanding Methode Traditionelle
sparkling wines.
Export income from NZ wine production has seen a
phenomenal increase in the past 20 years, growing nearly
24% each year. Australia is New Zealand’s biggest market,
followed by the UK and the U.S.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand (officially “The Dominion of New Zealand”) is an
island nation located in the south western part of the Pacific
Ocean. The country comprises two main islands, namely, the
North Island and the South Island, and a number of smaller
islands. The total area covered by New Zealand is 2,68,670
square kilometers.
The highest point of the country is Mt. Cook (3,764 meters
above sea level). The islands of New Zealand were initially
inhabited by Polynesian Maori. British colony was established
in the country in 1840. In 1907, New Zealand became
independent.
Natural treasures like glaciers, lakes, forests, endemic
animals, and mountains have enriched tourism sector of New
Zealand. This country is a famous hub of adventure tourism.
Activities like camping, diving, skiing, surfing, horse riding,
bungee jumping, hiking, sailing and rafting are popular tourist
attractions in New Zealand.

South Africa
South African wine has a history dating back to 1659, and
at one time Constantia, a famous wine region on the slopes
of Table Mountain, was considered one of the greatest wine
producing regions in the world. After apartheid, access
to international markets unleashed a burst of new energy
and new investment. Production is concentrated around
Cape Town, with major vineyard and production centres
at Paarl, Stellenbosch and Worcester. There are about 60
appellations within the Wine of Origin (WO) system, which
was implemented in 1973 with a hierarchy of designated
production regions, districts and wards.
On 2 February 1659 the founder of Cape Town, Jan van
Riebeeck, produced the first wine recorded in South Africa.
The winemaking traditions of South Africa often represent a
hybridization of Old World wine making and the new. Since
the end of Apartheid, many producers have been working
on producing more “international style” wines that can be
successful on the world market. Flying winemakers from
France, Spain and California have brought new techniques
and styles to South Africa. In the 1980s, the use of oak
barrels for fermentation and aging became popular.
Today the focus in the South African wine industry has been
on increasing the quality of wine production-particularly with
the more exportable and fashionable red grape varieties.
Pinotage, a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, has seen its
plantings rise and fall due to the current fashion of the South
African wine industry. Today it is the second most widely
planted red grape variety in South Africa.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA
South Africa, the emerging super power of the African
continent, has a mixed stable economy. Culturally one of the
most diverse and vibrant countries, South Africa also is the
sixth most bio - diverse country. Once known for the infamous
Apartheid policy, post independence South Africa is working
hard to build a reputation of multi- racial inclusion, democracy,
and peace. South Africa is also among the preferred tourist
destination country for tourists the world over.
Attractions in South Africa are primarily centered on the
wildlife treasures of the country, and the world famous natural
sanctuaries and parks of South Africa. The Big 5, that is the
lion, the leopard, the elephant, the rhino and the hippo - are
the primary draws at these wildlife displays. The big cats like
the cheetah, the leopard and the lion are most easily seen and
experienced in their natural wild settings. But South Africa’s
smaller wild inhabitants are also not to be despised, even the
birds of the country justify its naming as the Rainbow Nation.
The same can be said of its flowers.
Attractions of South Africa however do not end at its very
varied wildlife but includes its historic and cultural riches.
The cradle of humanity still owns enough of its ancient tribal
connotations to stir ones spirit with its basic sensuality and
find its echo in even the most urban slicked heart.

USA
As the 4th largest wine producing country in the world, the
US wine industry has steadily increased in size and revenue
over the past decade. In 2010 the US became the leading
wine consuming nation at 330 million cases. This equates to
Americans drinking 3.96 billion bottles of wine in comparison
to France’s record of 3.85 billion bottles.
According to the Impact Databank Report, Americans
spent more than $40 billion on wine in 2010, and wine
consumption recorded its 17th annual increase in the US.
California, the largest wine producing state in the nation,
currently accounts for 61% volume share of the US market.
According to the US International Trade Association (2011),
in 2010 grape production in the US was 6.86 million tons
with 944,800 bearing acres. The top 5 wine grape varieties
grown in the US are Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Zinfandel, Merlot, and Pinot Noir.
Wine is produced in all fifty US states. The total number of
wineries in the US reached 7,116 in 2011 showing a 9%
increase from the previous year. California is the largest wine
producing state with a current count of 3,458 wineries. The
next largest wine producing states are Washington, Oregon,
New York, Virginia and Texas, respectively.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT AMERICA
The largest economy of the world with a GDP of $15.1 trillion,
the United States of America is the third largest country by land
area and population. USA comprises 50 states and a federal
district. The capital city of the country is Washington DC
The United States is a diverse and multicultural nation, with
endless options for travelers. New York, Los Angeles, San
Francisco, and Chicago are a few of the biggest cities in the
United States, are filled with attractions. The Grand Canyon
and the many U.S. National Parks are popular destinations
for family vacations. World famous theme parks like
Disneyland and Disney World in California and Florida are just
a few of the many attractions offered in the United States.
