The next Speaking for Illinois 4- H Training will be held Saturday,
October 5 in Matteson, Illinois. Registration materials are availableat: https://webs.extension.uiuc.edu/registration/default.cfm?RegistrationID=8714 .
Speaking for Illinois 4-H is a wonderful opportunity to expand the leadership potential of high
school 4-H members. Applicants must be 14-18 years of age, willing to complete a full-day
training, and totally interested in working with their county and Unit to advance the 4-H
program! Whether it be by speaking to county board members or state legislators, recruiting
volunteers, soliciting new donors, or speaking to civic groups, the youth who attend SFI4-H
training learn how to tell their 4-H story. Information on preparing presentations, examining
your audience, Positive Youth Development (BIG-M), and working together to get your
message across is covered in fun and interactive ways. And the youth who participate in
SFI4-H training receive special invitations to participate in the spring Legislative Connection
events at the State Capitol and apply for National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C.
SFI4-H is totally planned and taught by members of the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership
Team. Deadline to register is September 25th.
Illinois 4-H announced that it will join AT&T in the “It Can Wait” campaign as
its members encourage drivers to take the pledge not to text while driving.
Illinois 4-H members are asking drivers to help make the state safer and to
save lives by sending a simple text message. To take the pledge, anyone
can text “4H4ICW” to “50555.” “It’s a small way to make a big difference,”
said Angie Barnard, executive director for the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
AT&T presented these facts in the effort to end texting and driving:
More than 100,000 crashes a year involve drivers who are texting (Source: National Safety
Council)
75 percent of teens say texting and driving is “common” among their friends (Source: AT&TWireless Survey)
97 percent of teen drivers say texting while driving is dangerous ― yet 43 percent admit todoing it. (Source: AT&T Teen Driver Survey)
“The members of Illinois 4-H are committed to making a difference in the ‘It Can Wait’ campaign,
and we will be encouraging friends and family members to take the pledge to never text and
drive,” said Barnard. “We’re excited to spread the message through the
state with our 23,000 members in 1,250 4-H clubs.”

COMMUNICATION IN TODAY’S WORLD
Technology has significantly changed the way we communicate today. The telephone replaced the
telegraph and today’s cellphones, e-mail and the Internet are replacing our landline phones. The way
we communicate with YOU (4-H families) is changing too.
It is very important that we have the correct phone numbers and e-mail addresses on your enrollment
forms. If you no longer use your landline then be sure to make a note of it on the enrollment form and
we will take it out of our system. Also, make sure we have your correct e-mail address. Print it clearly
on the enrollment form. In the coming year, you will see more Friday Updates, e-mail newsletters and
flyers, Facebook updates, and more information on our website and yes, we still will mail things out.

4-H Enrollment
4-H enrollment for new and continuing members will begin September 1, 2013. Youth must be 8 years old by Septem-
ber 1, 2013 . Youth ages of 5-7 can join a Cloverbud club.
4-H members may enroll in as many project areas as they have interest; however, it is recommended that first year
members enroll in only one or two projects. Your parents and your 4-H leaders will help you as you choose areas of in-
terest, set goals, and work on projects.
Remember, if you wish to continue in a project area from one 4-H year to the next, you must sign up for that project
area every year. You are not automatically enrolled from one year to the next. In order to exhibit a 4-H project at the
fair, you MUST be enrolled in the project area by the enrollment deadline.
Steps in Choosing 4-H Projects
A few steps to make the project selection process easier are:
Review the Illinois Clover
Eliminate projects which don’t interest you.
Consider how much time you have for projects.
Sign up for projects according to your age and skills.
Don’t enroll in a project if it is too advanced.
Make sure you have someone to help you with your projects.
These steps may help to make the project decision easier. 4-H is an organization that has no limitations, so try new
projects, advance on old projects, but most of all HAVE FUN!
Officer’s Corner
Electing Club Officers
Officer roles are an important part of helping the 4-H club run smoothly and gives youth leadership skills. Potential 4-H
officers are commonly nominated in one of two ways. First, a nominating committee can meet and think of members
that would do well as that officer. Or, nominations can be made from the floor during the election meeting. Either nomi
nating procedure is correct. It is just as important, though, to focus on other aspects of 4-H officer positions such as:
Members should get to know the people running for an office
Those running should be willing to share with the group why they should be selected for that
officer position
The 4-H group needs officers who will work with all members, be dependable, and show up for
a majority of the meetings.
You can learn more details about 4-H officer positions and nominating procedures by requesting
the booklet Helping Youth Help Youth: Working with officers and committees

Federation Update
What is 4-H Federation?
Federation is a group of 4-H members 13 and older who meet throughout
the year to plan and coordinate activities for Macoupin County 4 -H. This
group allows opportunities for growth in leadership and just a chance to
have some fun! Now is the time of year each club should choose at least two
Federation representatives. Having a Federation representative allows your club to know about
upcoming activities as well as assure your club’s interests are represented when planning activi-
ties. 4-H Federation also helps plan our Pork Cookout which raises money for your 4-H manuals
and program fees.
Kick-off 4-H Federation Meeting Scheduled for Oct 6
You’re invited to attend the first Federation meeting of the new 4-H year on Sunday, Oct 6 at
2:30pm at the Extension Office. This meeting will be the time that we elect officers for 2013-
2014. We will have something fun to do as well. If you have any questions about what being a
Federation member is, please call the Extension Office.
