By Courtney Mensen The National FCCLA Leadership Conference was held in the music capital of the world-Nashville, TN, at the beautiful Gaylord Opryland Hotel. We had almost 200 people from Minnesota at the conference in-cluding members, advisors, chaperones and other volunteers. In total, there were almost 7,000 at-tendees at the NLC! It was great to meet so many other officers and members from all around the coun-try. This year’s theme was Discover Your Voice, and the National Executive Council showed how they discovered their voices! The NEC was so much fun to watch. This year Skylar Borchardt, represented Minnesota on the NEC as the national Vice President of Competitive Events. Olivia Wicklund was elect-ed to the new NEC. During the conference 120 members participated in STAR Event competitions showing their family and consumer sciences skills and knowledge. We earned over 85 gold medals and 15 silver medals. Leader-ship sessions in the Leadership Academy were well attended by members. Speaker inspired us to na-tional and global action. Members from Minnesota were able to go to the Grand Ole Opry House and see amazing performances! We saw people such as Tyler Farr, Craig Morgan, and Lee Brice. We were heard by the whole house when Minnesota FCCLA was recognized between performances! At the Hard Rock Café, we had a great breakfast and the building was full of cool memorabilia of past and present singers and performers. Some chapters also had the opportunity to spend a little time in downtown Nashville. The famous Broadway Avenue was full of cool stores and places where many of today’s country stars were discovered! The trip was a great experience and it was one I’m sure none of us will
forget.

Achieving personal goals, tackling challenges,
relating to members, advisers and fellow National Offic-
ers while developing a National Program of Work are
all achievements of National Officer Skylar Borchardt.
Serving as the National Vice President of Competitive
Events, Skylar reflected on his journey. When asked
what his favorite memory from office was he responded
quite enthusiastically, “Breaking through the poster dur-
ing the Opening Session of NLC!” The national officers
raised the heat for the convention by busting out to
“Light Em Up” and maintained that high energy day in
and day out. Skylar’s favorite part of office was “being
able to interact with members.”
Becoming a state and national officer took hard work,
support and many layers of experiences. Skylar had
some advice to those who wish to run for an office posi-
tion. It is; “Try your best and be willing to step out of
your comfort zone”, something Skylar has had no strug-
gle doing. His memories and what he has learned will
last a lifetime and the he offers some closing thoughts
on his term. “Thank you to all of the advisors that have
mentored over the years- especially Mrs. Rick, Wendy
Ambrose and Shelly Barrett for your never fading sup-
port. Thank you to the members of FCCLA for allowing
me the honor of serving on the 2012/13 National Exec
Council. Remember to follow your dreams and you can
all achieve amazing things.”
Skylar congratulates Olivia Wicklund at National
Conference in Nashville. Olivia will be VP of Com-
petitive Events in 2013-2014.
Does FCCLA Impact Students?
FCCLA is positively impacting the educational
opportunities for students in grades 7-12.Our
surveys show some of the ways FCCLA has
helped students.
FCCLA helps youth with employability and
workforce skills.
89% of ninth graders acknowledge that they
are more capable of taking on responsibility
related to employability and workforce skills
because of their FCCLA involvement.
Male members ages 13-14 said that FCCLA
has helped them improve conflict-resolution
skills and they have developed responsibility,
self esteem and motivation.
FCCLA has made a significant impact in the
lives of students in grades 6-12 regarding
healthy choices and nutrition. FCCLA is able
to influence teens for choices made by
FCCLA members today to affect their choices
of nutrition, fitness and healthy choices in the
future. As the statistics illustrate, students re-
ported that they increased their physical activ-
ity and made better food choices particularly
eating fruits and vegetables. A survey in 2013
done by FCCLA demonstrates that students
choose wisely to make better decisions be-
cause FCCLA promotes these issues through
youth-based programs. 71% said they in-
creased their physical activity. 61% said they
learned about what is good to eat. Challenges
for teens continue to be to eat less processed
food. Nearly 38% said they try to limit sugar
and sodas with sugar.

Set high goals and go after them!
Olivia Wicklund-Incoming National FCCLA Vice President of Competitive Events
By Kaija Kottke
Minnesota, please join me and giving a big congratula-
tions to our New National Vice President of Competitive Events,
Olivia Wicklund from Litchfield, Minnesota! Being a national of-
ficer is a challenging job, but Minnesota knows Olivia is up to the
challenge. The process of being a national officer candidate is a
long and strenuous process. Starting off, each candidate has to
fill out a National Officer Candidate application that requires
three letters of recommendation, a copy of the chapter affiliation
form, and an official school transcript. Prior to the national con-
ference, Olivia had to prepare for her written FCCLA knowledge
test and her on-stage speech.
First, Olivia took her FCCLA knowledge test and orientation, she
continued on to the “Think Tank” where she got to know a group
of candidates. There was an interview where she was judged on
her speech and four questions from the nominating committee.
After a long day of interviewing and taking her test, she received
her first letter that congratulated her because she made the first
round of cuts for the national officer candidates. For the first
round of cuts, the national nominating committee cut the group
of 20 final candidates. Olivia participated in the “fishbowl” where
she got to talk with voting delegates, gave her big speech on
stage in front of some of the national convention participants,
and then ended her day with some team building with other can-
didates. On Tuesday morning, Olivia received her second letter
where she found out she is now a 2013-2014 NATIONAL OF-
FICER! Some of Olivia’s duties will be to work on the Competi-
tive Events Advisory Team to oversee STAR Events and to de-
velop new events.
IS BULLYING A
PROBLEM FOR
SOME STUDENTS IN
YOUR SCHOOL OR
COMMUNITY?
FCCLA has helped students develop
strategies and peer education meth-
ods to change their schools in posi-
tive ways. National FCCLA pro-
grams can be used in the classroom
to address various topics. A National
FCCLA Program with a current focus
is STOP The Violence.
This MN FCCLA survey in 2013 of
members from over 80 schools clear-
ly indicates that bullying is a large
issue in school districts, especially in
the middle school level.
80% of 8th graders surveyed want to
get involved in anti bullying projects
and 60% of senior high students
wanted to get involved in the anti-
bullying projects of FCCLA National
Program “STOP the Violence.”
90% of 6th and 7
th graders surveyed
are concerned about bullying and
say that bullying is an issue in
school.
Over 85% want to help reduce vio-
lence. Over half of the members said
they want to learn about the issue.
STOP the Violence national FCCLA
program encourages FCCLA mem-
bers to Recognize warning signs,
Report what youth know for to caring
adults and Reduce violence in their
schools. MN FCCLA recently has
worked with caring and compassion
strategies with Rachel’s Challenge.

National FCCLA names a new National

In our world of technology change is hap-

keep FCCLA moving forward. This includes
altering National Programs or STAR Events.
FCCLA will be introducing several new
STAR Events. These include a FCCLA

plied Math for Culinary Management. FCCLA will be eliminating Applied Technology as most
events now involve technology. Begin the 2013-2014 year of FCCLA. by checking out the STAR
events on the state and national websites.
Some of the Leadership Events are: Advocacy, Chapter Service in Action, Chapter in Review, Na-
tional Programs in Action and Promote and Publicize FCCLA.
Foundational Events are: Career Investigation, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Ambassa-
dor, Focus on Children, Illustrated Talk, Interpersonal Communications, Job Interview, Leadership,
Life Event Planning, Nutrition and Wellness, Parliamentary Procedure and Recycle and Redesign.
Career Preparation Event are: Applied Math for Culinary Management, Fashion Construc-
tion, Fashion Design, Food Innovations, Hospitality Tourism and Recreation, Interior Design,
Sports Nutrition and Teach &- Train.
At the 2013 National FCCLA Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, the New Executive Director was announced, Sandy Spavone. Mrs. Spavone comes to us from NOYS, which stands for National Organization for Youth Safety. She has worked with NOYS since July 2006 and before leaving NOYS she served as the Exec-utive Director for the organization.
Before her time with NOYS, she served as Director of Programs for National FCCLA from September 1999 to July 2006. Mrs. Spavone is excited to be back with FCCLA and hopes to lead FCCLA toward new horizons.
Recently she served with FCCLA and NOYS she taught 12th grade English and Advanced Placement English. She loves working with youth and has a passion for positive leaders in today's society. Sandy Spavone encourages FCCLA members to discover their voice in their school, community, and family.

...AND WE'RE OFF! Region Officers, State Peer Ed, Chapter Officers, and State Offic-ers gathered together for the Minnesota FCCLA Leadership Training Camp: The Amazing Race.
Members attended workshops, got inspired by speakers, presented workshops at round ta-bles, celebrated during lip syncs, and even started planning for the upcoming year. These workshops included information on National Programs, Local Officer Training, public rela-tions, membership, and much more. Between sessions and workshops, groups competed in fun Amazing Race challenges! One challenge was a scavenger hunt for FCCLA facts. This year's camp was also lucky to be joined by two amazing speakers. Anne Kisch, RND who. showed the officers how they can incorporate the program "Fuel Up to Play 60" into their chapters. Erin Aarstad of Bethel University gave a wonderful presentation on diversity and kindness. The year was kicked off when the State Executive Council revealed the new MN FCCLA State Theme. The theme is "Courage to Pursue, Dreams Come True." One camper, Hope, was quoted as posting; “Leadership, friends, and memories. Can this ultimate experi-ence get any better!!! “
#mnfccla #mnfcclacamp @MNFCCLA” on twitter during The FCCLA Amazing Race Camp. This camp was a great way to kick off the Minnesota FCCLA year!

Hello members across the state! I am Ethan Dressen, the 2013-2014 State FCCLA President. I am so excited to be able to serve as a state officer for this year. The Min-nesota FCCLA officers and I are very excited to get to know as many of you as possible this year. Sur-prisingly, FCCLA isn’t my only pas-time. One thing many people don’t know about me is I am a volleyball fanatic, when the Olympics roll around, that is my favorite thing to watch. I am also involved in Stu-dent Council, Envirothon, Band, Choir, Art, and many other things that would take too long to list. Be-ing an FCCLA officer has given me the opportunity to travel around the country, I have been places such as: Orlando, Anaheim, Washington D.C., and will be traveling soon to Spokane, and Omaha. I encour-age everyone to join this fantastic organization and take as many opportunities given to them.
Hello, I am Marissa Kunerth currently and I am proud to be serving
as the Minnesota FCCLA’s 2013-2014 President-Elect! For four
years now I have been a member of FCCLA and it has truly been a life
-changing experience. From meeting students from around the United
States, developing time management skills, learning organizational
skills, and becoming a strong public speaker, I cannot thank FCCLA
enough—it has truly transformed me into the young professional wom-
en I am today. I also take part in other extracurricular school activities
including BPA, Band, Choir, Marching Band, Pep Band, Golf, 4-H, and
National Honor Society (NHS). FCCLA have opened new doors for me
that I have never imagined, such as being an advocate as a National
Organization for Youth Safety (NOYS) Peer Mentor. I am super excit-
ed about my position as the Minnesota President Elect and the FCCLA
year ahead of us. I know we have a great state officer team, amazing
student leaders and we can all achieve anything we set our minds to.

Hey guys my name is Kaija Kottke! I am the 2013-2014 Minnesota FCCLA State Secretary! My goal as a State Officer is to inspire members to extend their leadership and grow both as a person and as a leader. My motto in life is to “Set your bar high, and don’t settle for anything short of that.” My favorite quote by Jerry Rice states, “I will do today what others won’t, so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.” I am the local president for my Waconia Senior High FCCLA chapter, a National Honors Society Officer and involved in the Conservation Club and Interna-tional Club. Outside of school I am a huge hunter and fisherwoman and simply enjoy the outdoors! Nothing is better than a weekend in the woods or on a lake with my family! I also enjoy hanging out with my friends and getting to know new people! I have the privilege to be working with my group of 13 Peer Educators. Our goal is to promote the Na-tional Programs Student Body and STOP the Violence! My goal this year is to carry out an extension of Rachel’s Challenge from last year with the help of my awesome Peer Educators! I am ready for Minnesota FCCLA to kick start a chain reaction of kindness!
Hi, I'm Lauren Starkson the 2013-2014 Minnesota State Treasurer. My favorite subjects are math and science and I plan to pursue a career in the medical field. This is perfect for me because I love do-ing anything where I can help make a difference in someone's life. One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to decorate cakes and listen to country music! I have enjoyed making several themed cakes for my family members' birthdays. T his year I competed in National STAR Event category receiving a Gold Medal and a scholarship. I help my family with a family busi-ness and even designed a logo for the company used on vehicles, signs and advertisements. I also have learned responsibility by babysitting for children aged 1-8 years old. One of my favorite FCCLA activities is to develop service projects such as penny wars, cookies in a jar, mission trips and fund raising activities. My state program leadership is with the junior high council and Power of One.
GET A JOB!
FACS or Family and Consumer
Sciences prepares youth for
careers in human services,
hospitality, education and train-
ing, early childhood, nutrition
and dietetics, food sciences
and culinary fields. During lead-
ership training in July, mem-
bers heard from career people
in various occupations such as
a chef, an interior designer, a
social worker, and a family trav-
el agent who all talked about
the training and career interest
that drew them to their jobs.
How can you explore possibili-
ties? One way is to learn with
STAR Events. Consider a
STAR Event in:
Job Interview– Preparing a re-
sume, an interview and learn-
ing about the needs for a spe-
cific job.
Career Investigation; Learning
about the career potential and
interests that you have
Teach and Train- Developing skills for presenting, trainings and preparing for the role of an educator or corporate trainer.

th year in
FCCLA. I am involved in volley-ball, basketball, our school’s spring play, large and small group band and choir, and I am also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I am the youngest of four girls in my family and I have three brother-in-laws and four nieces! I am so excited for all the great ideas our officer team is already putting into action! This year is going to be fantastic and I can’t wait to share the Ultimate Lead-ership Experience with all of you! Last year I was honored to sing a solo of the National Anthem before 7000 people at the Na-tional FCCLA conference!
Hello everyone, my name is Sammy Jo Severance and I am current-
ly serving as your 2013-2014 Vice President of Public Relations! I
have been in FCCLA for six years now and wouldn’t trade my
FCCLA experience for the world! As an active member, I have com-
peted in STAR Events for five years and have attended Nationals
four times. FCCLA has truly been a life changing organization and I
wouldn’t be where I am today without it. I take part in multiple other
extra-curricular activities such as Student Council, A’capella Choir,
and Yearbook. In my free time, I love to listen to music, take tons of
pictures, and occasionally hang out at my local Caribou Coffee! I am
excited to say that I was selected to be a part of the National Organi-
zations for Youth Safety (NOYS) 2013-2014 Teen Distracted Driving
Prevention Team; so while representing Minnesota FCCLA, I will be
working hard to be a strong advocate for NOYS as well! I cannot
explain how excited and blessed I feel to be holding this wonderful
position. I am truly looking forward to this upcoming year and I hope
you are too! Lastly, I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from
Dr. Seuss, “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no

Hey, hey FCCLA- I’m Breann Hogie and I am thrilled to be your 2013-2014 Vice Presi-dent of Community Service I will be a senior and have been very involved in this or-ganization since seventh grade by competing in STAR Events, attending National Conventions, and participat-ing in community service pro-jects. I also enjoy playing sports, jamming out to music and meeting new people through FCCLA… So don’t hesitate to come up and intro-duce yourself. You can tell me all about how you are helping out your community through the Share our Strength National Outreach Project or whatever else ig-nites your passion to give back. I’m excited to work with this awesome Executive Council team and all of the Region Presidents.
Hi, I'm Rick Osborne, your 2013-2014 Vice-President of Re-source and Development for MN FCCLA. I'm 16 years old and this will be my third year in FCCLA. Some of the hobbies I enjoy doing during my free time are biking, running, swimming and weight training. Activities I'm involved in at school include Student Council for three years and being a mentor to the new freshmen. I'm very active in my church and serve on the Student Leadership Team and have gone on several mission trips with my youth group. I usher and read scripture regularly and enjoy performing in skits/plays and dinner theaters.
I also enjoy volunteering with Second Harvest Heartland Food Dis-tribution on a monthly basis. FCCLA has helped me improve my leadership and speaking skills and has enabled me to travel to Orlando, FL, Nashville, TN and soon to Washington, DC.
I'm looking forward to networking and meeting FCCLA members and advisers. I'm also excited about this year’s state theme and to see how individuals and chapters pursue their dreams. I hope you have a great school year!
Global Youth Service Days
April 10-12, 2014.
Service to others and civic engage-
ment is an important part of the MN
FCCLA program. Our MN FCCLA
surveys indicate that two thirds of
grade 7-12 students said they know
about issues affecting their commu-
nity and world because of involve-
ment in FCCLA. FCCLA has helped
64% of students to have more inter-
est in service. In a time when deci-
sions by policy makers directly af-
fect the lives of students, FCCLA
has generated more interest for stu-
dents to learn about the legislature
and how policies are made. Some
ways to get involved are with Global
Youth Service Projects which can
be done anytime from Martin Luther
King Day in January to April 10. So
start planning. Use the resources
on the FCCLA website or also
Youth Service America’s resources.
The National FCCLA organization
has renamed “Community Service”
to Leadership Service in Action.

Have you ever wondered what keeps a strong organization like FCCLA together? The MEMBERS of
course! With over 200,000 members, FCCLA is a strong growing student lead organization. So how
can you keep increasing your membership? An idea that could be used is a fun slogan for the year,
you could use fish related items and say “Get Hooked on FCCLA.” At the first meeting you want to
have fun games and energizers to get members up and moving. Throughout the year keep using the
slogan and you could even put a small package of Swedish Fish in student’s lockers to remind them of
upcoming meetings. Remember when creating a slogan be fun and creative. Here is a list of others
that could be used:
Jungle Theme “Welcome to the Jungle of FCCLA”
Board Games “ FCCLA is a Boardwalk”
Candy Theme “FCCLA is Sweeter Than Candy”
Minnesota FCCLA Challenges YOU!
With the school year just around the corner and coming into full swing, Minnesota
FCCLA challenges you to participate in the 7-Up Challenge! All you have to do
is increase the membership in your chapter by 7 people from the last year, or have
33.3% of your student body involved in FCCLA, and you will be invited to attend the
7-Up Highlighter Party at State Conference! Let the Membership Madness begin!
What people say about FCCLA…….
“I learned that the more I serve, the better you feel.”
Minnesota FCCLA youth leader. April 2013.
“I’ve learned that there are many students in our
school (and presumably across the state, country and
globe) who feel as if they have no voice. Through
various activities and speakers, we’ve empowered
students to raise their voice and make a difference in
their everyday lives.” Minnesota FCCLA youth leader. April
2013.
Does the FCCLA leadership training
help officers with social media?
91% said they would be less impulsive in posting on
social media.
82% said understanding more about social media
safety.
73% are recognizing that their peers have been
inappropriate in social media.
73% said they had seen cyber bullying with social
media.
64% have an understanding about how to be ap-
propriate in my use of social media in postings and
comments.
54% see ways of using social media in their leader-
ship role.
