Foreword

It is with much pleasure that I present the See It Live Theatre Season. The 2013 Season is a great selection of shows from a variety of producers from both Queensland and interstate.

This year’s See It Live Season is an exciting selection that features some companies performing for the first time on the Pilbeam Theatre stage and some making a welcome return.

We have fine music, classical and contemporary dance, drama, comedy, opera and more. Of course we also have own musical, the award winning Chicago.

Please take a moment to look through this booklet and consider the benefits of becoming a subscriber.

The See it Live Season is proudly presented by Rockhampton Regional Council, in cooperation with Playing Australia and other State and Federal funding bodies.

SundownerDirector: Kate DenboroughWriter: David DenboroughPerformers: Helen Morse, Jackie Rees, Timothy Ohl, Michelle Heaven,

Craig Bary with the Tivoli LoveliesCreated in partnership with Alzheimer’s Australia

Imagine this...It is becoming increasingly difficult to discern the difference between the present and the past, between what is familiar and what is foreign. Events that took place just minutes ago are being constantly erased, while memories that you have been able to keep at bay for decades now come rushing towards you.

The realm of memory remains a great mystery and Sundowner’s Syndrome remains an unanswered question. Why is it that just as the sun goes down, so many of those with Alzheimer’s become particularly disorientated and confused?

This breathtaking performance traverses sorrow, fears and human dignity. Through the eyes of three generations, Sundowner tells the story of so many Australian families.

If our parent is no longer the person we know, how can we care for them in the present and also honour their memory?

Sundowner is a story of love: love of family, love of history, and love of life.

“...it succeeds in what it sets out to do: engage, affect, educate and entertain” The Australian

R&J Produced by Expressions Dance Company and Queensland Performing Arts Centre

Composer: John Babbage Music: TopologyDesigner: Bruce McKinvenLighting Designer: David Walters

Love plays a major role in all our lives, but as Shakespeare knew too well, does not always guarantee a fairy-tale ending. Set across three different eras, and telling three different versions of events, Expressions Dance Company’s R&J turns the classic story of Romeo and Juliet on its head, cutting to the essence of what is real, human and inevitable.

Winner of Outstanding Achievement in Choreography at the 2012 Australian Dance Awards, R&J reinforces the notion that love – no matter what age you are, or what era you live in – is eternal, and its power, everlasting.

With music composed by John Babbage and recorded by prolific music ensemble Topology, R&J celebrates contemporary performance at its most bold and powerful.

“R&J is love interrupted, love you can’t live without and love you have to. This is Romeo and Juliet for our times.” Olivia Stewart, The Courier Mail

Animal Farm By George Orwell

Adapted and created by shake & stir theatre co

Adaptor: Nick SkubijDirector: Michael FulcherDesigner: Josh McIntoshLighting Designer: Jason GlenwrightSound Designer/ Composer: Guy Webster

Animal Farm, one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries arrives in a brand new production combining physical theatre and storytelling.

George Orwell’s simple yet intensely powerful fairy tale illustrates how greed and absolute power corrupts absolutely and, with devastating consequences, can change the course of history. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and under the principles of ‘Animalism’ – a better life, free from human service, is promised to all. Guided by a simple set of rules and an unrelenting respect for authority, it is not long before the rules that promised freedom become the chains that bind the animal once again.

Directed by Michael Futcher and brought to life by shake & stir theatre co and a cast of Queensland’s most dynamic actors, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, exciting, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events in 2013.

Mozart’s Don GiovanniA new production from Opera Australia’s Oz Opera

Director: Michael Gow Lighting Designer: Matt Scott Conductor: Tahu Matheson Orchestra Reduction: Andrew Greene Adapted by: Michael Gow English Translation: Anthony Legge Designer: Robert Kemp

The Don spends his days in the company of gorgeous women, fine food and the best champagne, and he’s ready to add more women to his catalogue of conquests. But this time his dalliances are not going entirely to plan. Donna Anna wants to avenge the death of her father (which Don Giovanni may have had something to do with), and the abandoned Donna Elvira seems to disrupt his seductive plans at every turn. Meanwhile, Zerlina just wants to get married without the Don’s amorous interference...or does she?

But something more sinister is waiting just around the corner. Is opera’s favourite bad boy about to meet his match?

Be swept up in the stylishly sexy decadence straight out of La Dolce Vita in Oz Opera’s new production of Mozart’s classic opera. Our smouldering Don is about to seduce audiences all around Australia – watch out ladies!

Sung in English, performed with chamber orchestra.

Patrons’ Advice: Very small amount of atmospheric smoke used.

“…a dramatically convincing and visually beautiful production.”Bill Stephens, Canberra Critics Circle

The Comedy Of ErrorsA Bell Shakespeare and State Theatre Company of South Australia co-production

By: William Shakespeare Director: Imara Savage Designer: Pip Runciman Lighting Designer: Mark PenningtonComposer: David HeinrichAssistant Director: Nescha Jelk With: Elena Carapetis, Jude Henshall, Nathan O’Keefe and

Hazem Shammas

Two sets of identical twins are separated at birth when they’re rescued from a shipwreck. And when they end up in the same shifty, transitory port‐town of Ephesus fully grown, we join them on their bizarre journey of reconciliation. As they collide unknowingly with each other’s friends and family, it’s not long before this absurd tale of mistaken identity and far‐fetched coincidence unfolds in chaotic hilarity.

Imara Savage takes on one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies with style. Sharp banter and comical word‐play lure us into a contemporary world where characters are reinvented, individuality is fluid, and bigger themes lie just below the surface.

Over the course of this fast-paced comedy, truths are increasingly unstable, accidents more unfortunate and the boundary between what’s real and what isn’t becomes even more tenuous.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

By: Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield

In a world where we constantly lament that we are “time-poor”, who has the time or indeed the stamina to endure the daunting length of the Immortal Bard’s canon? So join us as we present a bold, speedy, irreverent romp through all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays that aims to out-Python Monty!

Three brave actors brazenly blend the best of the brilliant Bard with the scrapings from the bottom of the absurdity barrel in this farcical feast of inspired lunacy. A side-splitting roller coaster ride involving improvisation, pop culture and audience participation, as well as the fastest, funniest “Hamlet” you’re ever likely to see. Since its first production, performed by its creators the Reduced Shakespeare Company, 25 years ago, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) has become a global phenomenon with seasons in over twenty countries including a record-breaking nine year run at London’s Criterion Theatre in the West End.

Tim Overton joins original cast member and comedian Damian Callinan.

“Stand-up veteran Damian Callinan has a relaxed, slow burn to his comedy, which is a joy to watch and, dressed in an iridescent doublet and hose with a rampant peacock (named Brendan) as a codpiece, he is a constant source of mirth”Murray Bramwell, The Australian

GiselleProduced and staged by: Ai-Gul GaisinaChoreography: after Jean Coralli and Jules PerrotMusic: Adolphe AdamSet & costume design: Based on an original design by Peter Cazalet

Beautiful and haunting, Giselle is a luminous masterpiece of Romantic ballet.

Her heart broken and her reason shattered, the innocent village girl Giselle succumbs to untimely death. Deep in the moonlit forest, she emerges in the twilight spirit world of the vengeful Wilis, spirits of girls who have been cruelly betrayed, and perished before their wedding days. When Giselle’s repentant lover Albrecht visits her grave, only her undying love and devotion can sustain him through the Wilis’ irresistible, deathly dance.

Requiring exceptional technical and dramatic skills, Giselle is a heart-rending tale of love, remorse and forgiveness. Queensland Ballet’s traditional production offers breathtaking, graceful dance, but ultimately it is the emotional depth of this exquisite work that will touch your heart.

Cautionary Tales For ChildrenBased on the verse by Hilaire Belloc

Adapted by Claudia O’Doherty, Mark Jones and Chris Kohn

A lyrical satirical cabaret at which you may lose your head entirely!

Meet our dysfunctional musical troupe of four, who have travelled to our stage via a time machine. They’re on a mission to teach today’s rascally kids a thing or

two about the importance of being well-behaved, and are armed with Hilaire Belloc’s poems about wayward children and the outlandish fates that befall them.

Created for audiences aged 8 and above, the delightful family production Cautionary Tales for Children is proof that learning lessons about good behaviour

has never been so quite so absurd and hilarious at the same time.
