This orchestra came to be known as the Saito Kinen Orchestra, and with this orchestra as its foundation, and orchestral concerts and opera as its two main pillars, the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto was established in Nagano's Matsumoto City in September 1992. Fondly supported by the community since its inception, the festival is now entering its 22nd year and, retaining its original goal to create music of the highest world standards, is proud to deliver yet another refined program. This year's opera is a Ravel double bill directed by Laurent Pelly and co-produced with the Glyndebourne Festival. With Seiji Ozawa conducting L'enfant et les sortilèges and Stéphane Denève conducting L'heure espagnol, and featuring great singers including Isabel Leonard, a fantasy-filled comical world unravels on stage. World-renowned conductor Kazushi Ono, who is returning for the second time since his appearance at the festival in 2004, leads the first two orchestra concerts. The 2013 festival will be brought to a finale by a concert featuring Junko Onishi, a jazz pianist highly regarded in both New York and Japan. This closing program will feature a first time collaboration between Junko Onishi and Seiji Ozawa, who will be conducting the Saito Kinen Orchestra. Chamber music, in which we can discern the distilled essence of symphonic composition, will be presented at the newly renovated Harmony Hall in this year's “Chamber Concert series I-III”, with masterworks spanning across three evenings. The first concert features the Michelangelo String Quartet led by Nobuko Imai, including a performance of Schubert's String Quintet in C minor with Sadao Harada. The second evening showcases veteran members of the Saito Kinen Orchestra in a Mozart piano trio and Dvořák's piano quintet with Ichiro Nodaira on piano, and Debussy's Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp. The third concert is a performance of brass and string ensembles, adding a rich variety to the series. Teaching young musicians and introducing children to classical music is also an important project for the festival. In continuation from last year, the “Saito Kinen Chamber Music Study Group - Brass Ensemble” will take place along with a new project led by Junko Onishi, the “Saito Kinen Jazz Study Group - Piano Trio,” in which the participants will present their achievements in final recitals. The Seiji Ozawa Music Academy Orchestra will perform eight performances of the “Concert for Children”; this year's program will be the fourth movement from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, with chorus. “Opera for Young People: Hänsel und Gretel,” a wonderful production, with the same youth orchestra and professional singers, will be presented four times for students, and a new addition this year is two extra performances for the general public of the same production. While giving young musicians a chance to perform both in orchestra concerts and opera productions, these performances also provide more opportunities for youth and adults to experience classical music. The Soldier's Tale composed by Stravinsky is a co-production with the Matsumoto Performing Arts Centre, and it is a work unique to Matsumoto, where even the musicians must interact with actors and dancers while playing their music from memory. Entering its third year of presentation, and with new direction this year by Artistic Director Kazuyoshi Kushida, the lineup includes Kanji Ishimaru as the narrator, world-renowned ballet dancer Yasuyuki Shuto as the Soldier, the acclaimed Akira Shirai playing the Devil, celebrated ballet dancer Galien Johnston appearing as the Princess, and seven promising young musicians performing the music. Important annual traditions at Matsumoto Castle will be continued this year, such as the “Welcome Concert: Harmony at the Castle” and the “Parade and Joint Performances”, the latter of which attracts as many as 3,000 participants, including those who come from areas outside Nagano. We look forward to sharing many wonderful moments with you at Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto this summer. *Seiji Ozawa is presently in the process of recovery, however in the event that he becomes unable to conduct, Assistant Conductor Pierre Vallet will conduct the opera program, and another conductor (TBA) will take the podium for the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto Gig. The Saito Kinen Orchestra was founded in 1984 when Seiji Ozawa gathered former fellow students from around the world to hold a concert on the tenth anniversary of the passing of their teacher Hideo Saito, an outstanding educator at Toho Gakuen School of Music. The 2013 festival

will be brought to a finale by a concert featuring Junko Onishi, a jazz pianist highly regarded in both New York and Japan. This closing program will feature a first time collaboration between Junko Onishi and Seiji Ozawa, who will be conducting the Saito Kinen Orchestra.Chamber music, in which we can discern the distilled essence of symphonic composition, will be presented at the newly renovated Harmony Hall in this year's “Chamber Concert series I-III”, with masterworks spanning across three evenings. The third concert is a performance of brass and string ensembles, adding a rich variety to the series.Teaching young musicians and introducing children to classical music is also an important project for the festival. “Opera for Young People: Hänsel und Gretel,” a wonderful production, with the same youth orchestra and professional singers, will be presented four times for students,

and a new addition this year is two extra performances for the general public of the same production. Entering its third year of presentation, and with new direction this year by Artistic Director Kazuyoshi Kushida, the lineup includes Kanji Ishimaru as the narrator, world-renowned ballet dancer Yasuyuki Shuto as the Soldier, the acclaimed Akira Shirai playing the Devil, celebrated ballet dancer Galien Johnston appearing as the Princess, and seven promising young musicians performing the music.Important annual traditions at Matsumoto Castle will be continued this year, such as the “Welcome Concert: Harmony at the Castle” and the “Parade and Joint Performances”, the latter of which attracts as many as 3,000 participants, including those who come from areas outside Nagano.

Please take this into careful consideration before purchasing your tickets.
