Why Outdoor? And Why Resident Camp?

The Value of the Camp Pathway for Girl Scouts The value of an outdoor experience in a girl's life is beyond measure. It is a time for creating memories that will last a lifetime, and it has been an impor-tant component of the Girl Scout experience since the beginning of the orga-nization. The Camp Pathway provides a setting for girls to stretch their minds and muscles, appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of the world in which they live, exercise leadership and learn a wide variety of new skills. They are also challenged as individuals and as groups working toward a common goal.

Camp Pathway progression is designed to build with the girl's skills and experi-ence, and to give her the opportunity to grow individually as well as to work within a group in an outdoor environment.

Day Camp is designed primarily for girls in 1st-5th grades. It is a time for a girl to develop camping skills, become confident and secure in her abilities as a camper, and to learn to work together and enjoy the outdoors.

Resident Camp is the next step in the Camp Pathway progression. Girls as young as 1st grade may be ready for Resident Camp, while others may not. But by the time a girl is in 4th to 5th grade she should be responsible enough for herself, and confident enough to take the next step to resident camp alone or with a friend. Girls grow in self-confidence, independence and leadership, learn new skills and interests, comradeship, and the ability to make good deci-sions. Staff members are involved and available to assist girls when they need help but are able to step back and let girls accomplish goals and triumphs for themselves.

Troop Camp is a special time for troops to camp and work together as a small community drawing on each individual's strengths. The girls should plan and implement the camping trip with the support of their leaders to have a bond-ing and memorable experience.

The Camp Pathway offers many opportunities for girls to live in a community of caring adult staff members and volunteers who nurture girls in an outdoor environment. They develop lifetime friendships; they live and participate in a community that recognizes differences; they discover the value of being in a safe, supportive environment. The outdoors and camping offer not only ad-venture and challenge – but they are FUN! They also present a perfectsetting in which to emphasize many of our 15 outcomes:

Discover – Girls develop a strong sense of self, gain practical and healthy life skills and strengthen their values.

Connect – Girls form caring relationships, promote cooperation and team building and embrace diversity.

Take Action – Girls feel empowered to make a difference, identify and solve problems they care about, and advocate for themselves and others.

General Parent Camp Information

Who Are the Camp Staff? Our staff members are mature, responsible individuals selected for their special abilities, certifications, professionalism, and experienceworking with youth camping programs. All of our resident campstaff members are interviewed and screened. Background checks are conducted on all staff members. All staff participate in anintensive pre-camp training and ongoing trainings throughout the summer on topics such as child and adolescent development, camp skills, Girl Scout programs, healthcare, First Aid and CPR training, and safety practices and procedures. Most counselors are college students or recent college graduates with experience working in schools, child-care centers, or the recreation field.

We provide program specialists for lifeguards, horseback riding, arts & crafts, archery, low and high ropes, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and other adventure program areas.

Health & SafetyYour camper's health/safety is our first priority. All camp programs are planned and staffed according to the high standards of Girl Scouts of the USA and the American Camp Association. Healthcare managers di-rect the health centers at each camp and are supported by on-call ser-vices of a local physician and emergency medical center. If a camper is on medication, the healthcare manager will administer and document it. Girls must turn in all medication (in the original container) to the healthcare manager upon arrival at camp.

Health histories are required for all programs. Physical exams are required for programs lasting more than two nights. Once a girl registers, she will receive the proper health form and instructions in her confirmation packet. So that we can provide the best possible experience for your camper, please note any special needs, disabilities or dietary restrictions on her registration form under "special needs". This helps us to establish appropriate staffing and any additional accommodations that a camper may require.

Parents/guardians will be contacted by phone if sickness or injury requires a visit to a doctor, or for any other issue, such as severe homesickness, injury, or illness that prevents your child from taking part in camp program activities.

Meals, Allergies, Food & Special RequirementsOur camps provide well-balanced meals prepared by experienced kitchen staff and served in the dining hall facility. Menus are planned based on the summer food service program guidelines (the same guide-lines used in most school cafeterias). Meals are normally served "family style" and girls will participate in setup before and cleanup after each meal.

It is very import that we are aware of any special dietary needs, re-quirements or allergies BEFORE your child arrives at camp. Please list any severe allergies on your registration form. This will not affect your camper's placement but is meant only to help better serve your child's specific needs. If your child requires specialized foods please contact the Camp Pathway Coordinator, Dana Young, to discuss the best way to accommodate your child's dietary needs.

Visitors & Phone CallsFor safety reasons, access to Girl Scout camp properties is limited when camp is in session. Mail from home is welcome and delivered daily. Parents can leave mail at the check-in for delivery during the session to eliminate concerns over the timeliness of postal deliveries.

In the event of a home emergency or change in pick-up plans, please call the camp director. Camp phone numbers will be provided in your confirmation materials. Camp directors will contact parents in case of emergency or illness.

Where will my child sleep?Campers usually sleep in platform tent or cabin units. Each unit has 4-7 tents with raised wooden floors or cabins. Each unit has a covered shelter and washhouse. If you come to Troop Core Camp or with a female adult you will be placed together. Paddle Pals will have sepa-rate sleeping units for girls and adult male companions. Staff is located within each unit.

Program DisclaimerGirl Scouts of Kentuckiana reserves the right to cancel any program or program activity when weather conditions are unsuitable – including extreme heat, thunderstorms, etc. Refunds are not given when activi-ties are cancelled as a result of "Acts of God".

Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Crews will enjoy two great tours in Ely at the International Wolf Center and the Dorothy Molter “The Root Beer Lady” Museum then hit the water for one of two wonderful trips. Crews will have their choice of which 5-day trip they wish to take into the Boundary Waters.

Howling with the Wolves

Visit the International Wolf Center in Ely, where you'll see and learn about these phenomenal animals that live in the North-wood’s. Then, head out on a 5-day canoe trip, where you will have the chance to howl with the wolves (or at least hoot with the loons). This is a perfect blend of challenge and relaxation for your first trip in the Boundary Waters. Paddle along beautiful lakes, try your hand at portaging, and enjoy swimming, exploring, singing, games, and nature. Enjoy a quiet night paddle on your last night in the woods, under a full moon!

Root Beer Tales

Visit the Dorothy Molter Museum in Ely, where you'll learn about the "Root Beer Lady" who spent her life in the Boundary Waters. Then, head out on a 5-day canoe trip to visit her actual home site, and experience life in the woods she loved so much. Upon your return to the canoe base you will, of course, be treated to a bottle of ice cold root beer made from her original recipe.

NOTE: Please see the Girl Scout of Kentuckiana website for more information about this trip along with trip itinerary and other important information.

Financial Aid is available to GIRLS ONLY (with special exceptions for leaders to meet Safety Activity Checkpoints ratio num-bers) who: are registered members of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana (GSK).

Parents/Guardians are to complete the scholarship/financial aid application and include it with new registration and coun-cil sponsored summer camp session (Day Camp, Resident Camp, Troop Core Camp & Special Sessions) registration forms along with the appropriate deposit and/or fees.

For council sponsored summer camp sessions (including Day Camp, Resident Camp, Troop Core Camp & Special Sessions) the Girl Scout's family will be expected to pay the registration deposit plus a minimum of 10 percent of the total camp fee.

Families are eligible for only ONE council sponsored financial aid package plus registration fees per year for each girl in the family. If applying for GSUSA registration, please attach a registration form as well.

Financial Aid is awarded based on apparent need and the availability of funds.
