Introduction

The IET is one of the world‟s leading professional societies for the engineering and

technology community, with more than 150,000 members in 127 countries and offices in

Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. The IET provides a global knowledge network to

facilitate the exchange of ideas and promote the positive role of science, engineering and

technology in the world. Under the guidance of IET, IET young professionals section -

Moratuwa chapter is one of the three chapters representing the IET undergraduates in Sri Lanka.

Throughout the years IET YMS Moratuwa chapter has produced well recognized and respected

engineering professionals to the world.

Providing professional experiences, working with industry‟s recognized business establishment

and individuals, taking part in national and international academic, professional as well as fun

events we, IET YPS Moratuwa chapter works as a family of great future professionals. With that

enthusiasm the IET YP Moratuwa Chapter continued it legacy through organizing a number of

successful events under the guidance of the board of officials for year 2012/ 2013. Following

provides the summery of the events which were launched.

Annual General Meeting

Date – 11th

December 2012

Time – 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Venue – PG seminar room, Electronics and telecommunication Department, UOM

Participation – Senior treasure & Staff advisor Dr. Ranga Rodrigu and the Members of the IET

The Annual General meeting of the IET YP chapter of University of Moratuwa for the years

2013/2014 included the appointing events of appointing the new board of officials, handing over

of the responsibilities and document officially to the newly appointed board, and also the new

structure of the committee.

In addition to the previous organization

structure few more official positions were

introduced with the intention of distributing

the responsibilities in order to make the

chapter more efficient and effective. The

new additions include the followings;

IT team - Upgrading website and

managing Google group and FB

page and maintenance.

HR team – Updating and

maintaining the membership data

base and all the related

responsibilities.

Marketing Team – Responsibility

of the promotional activities for each

event.

Recruitment 2013

Date – 10th

January 2013

Time – 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Venue – ENTC1, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication, University of Moratuwa

Participation – Senior treasure & Staff advisor Dr. Ranga Rodrigu and the Members of the IET

With the mision of building an open, flexible and

global knowledge network supported by individuals,

companies and institutions and facilitated by the IET

and its members, the IET YP chapter of university of

Moratuwa successfully organized its recruitment

ceremony for the year 2013 with the participation of

one of the most recognized personals in the global

IET community; Mr. Shekhar Sanyal (Director and

Country head of Institute of Engineering and

Technology, India). This is recognized as a great accomplishment which has not been achieved

by any of previous or current undergraduate IET communities

Comparing with the previous recruitments over

the years, in 2013 the IET YP Chapter of

University of Moratuwa took another

promising leap by extending its reach to

Information Technology undergraduates. This

year the chapter is planning on organizing two

„Life skill presentations‟ where the main focus

will be on helping the undergraduates in

improving soft skills and advising on

professional carrier requirements.

Industrial Training Session at NERD Centre

Date – 12th

to 28th of February 2013

Venue – NERD Center of Sri Lanka, 2P, 17B, Industrial Estate, Ekala, Ja-ela, Sri Lanka

Participants – 12 of Engineering undergraduates of IET YP University of Moratuwa

The training session at NERD center was successfully completed by engineering undergraduates

of IET YP University of Moratuwa. The participants have got a great opportunity to have

an exposure to the industry. They have gathered knowledge on how to tackle practical

problems arising during application of theory to the projects as well as handling clients.

Therefore these types of opportunities to work with industry will probably enhance the quality of

undergraduates who join hands with IET.

Trainees were appointed to

Electrical, Electronic and

Mechatronics Engineering

departments, Renewable Energy

Department and Agricultural and

post-harvest departments and

were able to improve their

knowledge on using CAD

software, electrical installation

designing and documentation and doing market research for procurement.

In addition the participants were able to gain knowledge on hydraulics systems and use of

FESTO FluidSim software for simulate the system. The experience gained in designing the

control system, using AutoCAD and selecting equipment from catalogues will be very useful

for them in the future.

Adventure Camp

Date – 23rd

of February 2013

Time – 6.30 am to 9.30 pm

Destination – Kithulgala

Participants – 16 members of the board of officials

The „Adventure camp‟ organized by the IET

YP Chapter of University of Moratuwa with

the intention of increasing the teamwork

abilities of the 2013 board of officials. The

main target of the current chapter officials is

to make brining the quality and the

usefulness of the chapter to a greater level

through the year-long planned event. To

make these events successful it is necessary

for the board of officials to be talented in

teamwork and leadership qualities. Thus the idea of and Adventure camp came to a reality. The

events included; Waterfall tracking, Rock Sliding, Confidence Jumping and Water Rafting

Field Visit 01

Date – 9th

of March 2013

Time – 6.30 am to 7.30 pm

Destination – Lakvijaya Power Station (Norocholai, Puttalam)

Participants – 80 IET members

With the participation of more than

80 members of electrical, electronic

and telecommunication, mechanical

and computer science departments

participated in the visit and this even

was facilitated by a former IET YP

Chapter of Moratuwa President Eng.

(Mr.) Shami Mudunkotuwa –

(Electrical Engineer at Norechchole

Power station)

The participants were able to acquire a great

amount of knowledge on the operations of

the facility and this event inspired the IET to

organize two more field visits for year 2013.

Guest lecture 01

Date – 27th

of June 2013

Time – 11.30 am to 1.00 pm

Venue – ENTC 1, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, University of

Moratuwa

Participants – More than 30 participants

The first guest lecture organized by the IET YP chapter of Moratuwa was on the topic of “Intra

and Inter personal communication skills”. The lecture was conducted by Eng. Kithsiri

Samarasighe, Senior Lecturer, Department of Electronic & Telecommunication Engineering,

University of Moratuwa. With the

lecturer‟s insights in to psychology he

was able to provide the gathering an

effective and practical link between

the professional and personal

communication needs.

Being a lecture on a less technical

based and much daily life based, the

gathering was so enthusiastic that the

even went on to extra time with the

long interactive question and answer

session. It was observed that the

lecture had a high impact on the

gathering and also assisted the

gathering in understanding effective

and efficient industrial and personal

life communication methods.

Pocket Recruitment

Date –18th

of July 2013

Time –11.15 am to 12.45 pm

Venue – Post Graduate Seminar room, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of

Moratuwa

Participants – 50 students

for electrical and computer science departments. This recruitment mainly targeted the new

undergraduates chosen for the respective departments. Event was held successfully with the

attendance about 40 new recruits from both departments.

Field Visit 02

Date – 31st of July 2013

Time – 1.30 pm to 4.30 pm

Destination – LTL Transformers (Pvt) Ltd, Agulana

Participants – 30 students

Field visit to „LTL Transformers (Pvt)

Ltd‟ was organized by the IET YP

Chapter of University of Moratuwa

with the intention of allowing the

students with the Electrical and

Electronic backgrounds to widen their

knowledge on manufacturing of

transformers and related aspects. The

event was organized also to encourage

the new members to recognize the

value of being part of the IET family.

The post event comments from the

participants were positive and especially the

new members feedback suggested that the

IET managed to provide a good impression

on them and that they were willing to

participate as well as contribute to future

events of IET as well.

Guest lecture 02

Date – 29th

of August 2013

Time – 11.15 am to 12.15 pm

Venue – Seminar Room, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Moratuwa

Participants – More than 25 participants

As the second guest lecture of the year the IET YP University of Moratuwa organized a lecture

by Eng. Manjula Perera on the topic of “Current trends of Wind Power in Sri lanka”. Eng.

Manajula being an first class undergraduate from university of Moratuwa and being the current

Director/CEO of the Wind Force (Pvt) Ltd, was managed to inspire the IET members from

electrical discipline with an insightful speech.

Field Visit 03

Date – 28th

of September 2013

Time – 6.30 am to 8.30 pm

Destination – Norochcholai Wind Power Plant

Participants – 44 IET members

the „Field Visit to Norochcholai Wind Power Plant‟

organized by the IET YP Chapter of University of

Moratuwa with the intention of increasing technical

knowledge of the IET members. As an annual tradition

the IET choses a power plant to be visited for the benefit

of IET undergraduates from both Electrical and

Electronics disciplines. In the history of IET this is

recoded as the second time where the „Norochcholai Wind Power Plant‟ was chosen as the

subject of the visit. Since most field visits over the years were directed towards Hydro-Electric

power plants this event was organized to give the members a different yet valuable experience.

Arunalu

Date – 02nd

and 3rd

of December 2012

Time – 9.30 am to 4.30 pm

Destination – Embalegoda Maha Vidyalaya, Kurunegala

Participants – more than 350 participants

Going beyond the tradition this year “Arunalu”

was organized as a two days programmer and

included the following objectives which were

successfully achieved.

Year End Get-together

Date – 29th

of December 2012

Time – 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm

Destination – Mt-Lavinia Beach

Participants – IET YP President and 25 of IET Members

The second and final get together of the year and also the final outing with the current board of

officials before the next annual

general meeting, was held on 29th

December with the participation of

IET YP president Mr. Roshan

Katugampola, current IET YP

chapter of Moratuwa board of

officials and current senior

members. The event included may

fun and games which spread through

the entire evening which was

followed by speech from the IET

YP president. The event which

included the games, songs as well as the dinner, provided the opportunity for the 4th

year

members to enjoy their final event organization before graduation

Conclusion

The IET is an collective of individuals from many disciplines with a vision of “Sharing and

advancing knowledge throughout the global Science, Engineering and Technology community to

enhance people‟s lives around the world” and a mission of “To build an open, flexible and

global knowledge network supported by individuals, companies and institutions and facilitated

by the IET and its members” With this guidance the IET YP Chapter of Moratuwa has been able

to showcase its excellence through the successful and innovative event organizations throughout

the years. Following those footsteps the board of officials together with the members were able

to organize successful event which covered the responsibilities of the IET which include;

Ensuring high standards of professional and academic competence and training and Arranging

lectures, meetings, conferences, seminars, publications, field visits and other global events. In

conclusion it can be stated that the IET YP Chapter of Moratuwa managed to end the official

year of 2012/2013 successfully by bringing the chapter future ahead in the path to being one of

the most recognized organizations currently operating at University of Moratuwa.
