Team-by-team Roundup Arizona DiamondbacksLefty Wade Miley suffered a dead arm period during the spring; he’s questionable for Opening Day. Fifth starter candidates Randall Delgado and Patrick Corbin may both make the rotation out of spring training if Miley isn’t ready, since lefty Tyler Skaggs has already been optioned to Reno (AAA)... due to injuries to both Adam Eaton and Cody Ross, Gerardo Parra and A.J. Pollock may begin the season as starting outfielders... first baseman Paul Goldschmidt enjoyed a strong spring and could be primed for a monster 2013... Cliff Pen-nington will start as the starter at shortstop, as rookie Didi Gregorius recovers from an elbow problem...

Atlanta BravesRight-hander Julio Teheran was positively dominant throughout the spring and easily earned the fifth starter job by leading the Braves in spring strikeouts. At 22 years of age, he may finally be ready to showcase his vast potential... both Juan Francisco and Chris Johnson did their part to stake a claim on the third base job this spring. In the end, nothing was settled so expect a platoon... new left-fielder Justin Upton enjoyed a strong spring and could put up career-best totals in his new digs... catcher Brian McCann (shoulder) appeared in minor-league action late in the spring but is still ex-pected to miss the first month of big-league games...

Baltimore OriolesJourneymen Steve Pearce and Conor Jackson, who both play first base and the outfield corners, enjoyed strong springs. With Wilson Betemit now out indefi-nitely, there may be room for both on the Opening Day roster. They may see a lot of time at designated hitter... righty Kevin Gausman, Baltimore’s 2012 first rounder, did not look out of place this spring and stayed in con-tention for a roster spot up until the final week of spring training. He proved to be ahead of schedule... lefty Brian Matusz failed to win a job in the rotation once again, so he will play a key role out of the bullpen in 2013... second baseman Brian Roberts seems healthy again and will lead off...

Boston Red SoxIt was supposed to be a battle of left-handers for the fifth starter job this spring. However, Franklin Morales went down to a back injury. Thus, Felix Doubront will open as Boston’s No. 5 starter when the regular season gets underway... with a huge spring, coupled with the heel problems of DH David Ortiz, rookie outfielder Jack-ie Bradley Jr. may have cemented the starting left field role. In such a scenario, veteran Jonny Gomes would DH until Ortiz returns. Mike Carp and Daniel Nava are also in the mix... Cuban glove man Jose Iglesias will likely open the season as Boston’s starting shortstop, since Stephen Drew (concussion) is out indefinitely...

Chicago CubsTravis Wood, Scott Feldman and Carlos Villanueva will begin 2013 in the Cubs rotation, due to injuries to both Matt Garza and Scott Baker. Wood had the best spring of three, while Feldman struggled badly... though he didn’t do much this spring, expect Luis Valbuena to start the season at third base. That’s because Ian Stewart will miss the start due to a quadriceps issue... while he continues to be the subject of constant trade rumors, left-fielder Alfonso Soriano is still a Cub. He had a productive spring and should bat cleanup this season... switch-hitter Dioner Navarro had a much stronger spring with the bat than fellow catcher Weling-ton Castillo...

Chicago White SoxWith John Danks (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list to start 2013, the White Sox had a temporary opening in the rotation this spring. The two main contenders

were left-hander Hector Santiago and righty Dylan Axelrod. The latter won the job, though it might be rather short-lived... veteran reliever Jesse Crain was bothered by a groin injury for much of spring training. He’s questionable for Opening Day but should a key contributor once more this season (once he’s 100 per-cent healthy)... acquired in February from the Giants, infielder Conor Gillaspie enjoyed a productive spring in his quest to earn a bench job as a backup corner infielder with the Chisox...

Cincinnati RedsIn one of the most intriguing spring battles at Reds camp, 24-year-old catcher Devin Mesoraco earned the backup job to starter Ryan Hanigan over wily veteran Miguel Olivo, who was Seattle’s starting catcher this time last year. In fact, Mesoraco figures to see ample playing time if he continues to hit the cover off the ball... the Reds moved Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman back to the closer role during the spring, so Jonathan Broxton will be the (expensive) setup man this season. Last year’s fifth starter, Mike Leake, replaces Chap-man... new center-fielder Shin-Soo Choo has looked good in the leadoff spot, though he’s been slowed by back problems this spring...

Cleveland IndiansThe Indians’ third baseman of the future may have arrived this spring, as 24-year-old Lonnie Chisenhall enjoyed a very strong exhibition schedule. That likely cemented his spot in the everyday lineup, though new manager Terry Francona may sit Chisenhall in favor or utility infielder Mike Aviles against tough left-handers this season... the fifth starter job has been won by non-roster invitee Scott Kazmir. The veteran lefty beat out the likes of Carlos Carrasco (who will serve a six-game suspension at the start of 2013 and then be sent down to Triple-A), Japanese veteran Daisuke Matsuzaka, top prospect Trevor Bauer and journeyman left-hander David Huff...

Colorado RockiesColorado’s shaky starting rotation appears to have added stability now that the five-man unit is set: Jhoulys Chacin, Jorge De La Rosa, Juan Nicasio, Jeff Francis and Jon Garland. The latter was signed late in the spring after being released by Seattle... he’ll start in Triple-A but rookie Nolan Arenado made a strong case to become Colorado’s everyday third baseman at some point this season. He displayed power and run produc-tion but also hit for average... among the rotation candi-dates who were sent down were lefties Drew Pomeranz and Christian Friedrich, plus righty Tyler Chatwood... journeyman veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba should back up Wilin Rosario this season...

Detroit TigersThe big news at Tigers camp all spring surrounded rookie closer Bruce Rondon, who got off to a terrible start in spring training. He bounced back in the second half of the exhibition schedule, but it wasn’t enough. He’ll start out at Triple-A Toledo and Detroit will use a closer-by-committee approach for now... righty Rick Porcello and lefty Drew Smyly were both outstanding throughout the spring, so it’s a shame there’s room for only one of them in the Detroit starting rotation. Porcello, the subject of several trade rumors throughout the spring, will begin 2013 as the fifth starter, while Smyly will pitch out of the bullpen (for now)...

Houston AstrosThe shortstop position is just as unsettled at the end of spring training as it was when it began. Tyler Greene was the favorite to win the job but was released. The Astros signed Ronny Cedeno (released by the Cardinals) to be the everyday shortstop (for now), with Marwin Gonzalez still in the mix... right field is another question mark heading into 2013, as Rick Ankiel and Fernando Martinez are vying for at-bats against right-handed pitching, while Brandon Barnes is expected to get some starts against lefties. Nothing is etched in stone here, though... Jordan Lyles was awful this spring, so the 22-year-old righty was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City...

TOP 5 SPRING HAPPENINGS (since the February 25 release of The Sports Forecaster, 2013 Major League Baseball Preview and Fantasy Guide)

1. The Reds changed their minds and moved lefty Aroldis Chapman back to the closer role, abandoning the idea to use him as a starter (for now).

2. Injuries to three everyday veteran Yankees (Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter) led to the acquisition of outfielders Brennan Boesch and Vernon Wells.

3. After a very long wait on the free agent market, right-hander Kyle Lohse finally signed a three-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

4. Long-time Yankee Mariano Rivera, arguably the greatest reliever of all time, announced his retirement at the end of 2013.

5. The Dominican Republic captured the 2013 World Baseball Classic, defeating Puerto Rico in the final and ultimate game.

Page 3: 2013 PRESEASON UPDATE - Sportsguides.sportsforecaster.com/downloads/tsf/2013-baseball-update.pdfCincinnati Reds In one of the most intriguing spring battles at Reds camp, 24-year-old

Kansas City RoyalsDespite spending time with Mexico at the 2013 World Baseball Classic, right-hander Luis Mendoza was able to beat out veterans Bruce Chen and Luke Hochevar (among others) to secure the No. 5 starter job. Men-doza may face stiff competition from Felipe Paulino or Danny Duffy when they return from injury (around mid-season)... speedy second baseman Chris Getz held off Johnny Giavotella for the starting role at the keystone position. Giavotella was optioned to Omaha (AAA)... the Royals released several veterans trying to earn jobs this spring, including outfielders Xavier Nady and Endy Chavez, as well as left-hander George Sherrill...

Los Angeles Angels of AnaheimThe Vernon Wells era is over in Orange County, as the Angels sent him (along with cash) to the Yankees for two fringe prospects. This means Mike Trout will play mostly left field this season, while Peter Bourjos will man center field. With Josh Hamilton in right, the Angels have one of the best defensive outfields in the majors... with Ryan Madson (elbow) out for the first month or so, strikeout artist Ernesto Frieri should as-sume the closer duties (with lefties Sean Burnett and Scott Downs also available to pitch the ninth inning if the situation warrants)... catcher Hank Conger had a great spring and probably has nothing left to prove in the minors...

Los Angeles DodgersShortstop Hanley Ramirez came back from the 2013 WBC with a thumb injury that required surgery. Therefore, Luis Cruz will replace him for now, with Nick Punto and Juan Uribe sharing time at third... newcomer Zack Greinke had elbow issues during the spring, but he’s likely to be ready for his first start of the season... all eight of the Dodgers’ starters appear to be healthy heading into 2013, so expect GM Ned Colletti to be busy in the coming weeks... left-fielder Carl Crawford (elbow) is another Dodger who should begin 2013 healthy... Cuban outfielder Yasiel Puig and shortstop Dee Gordon both impressed this spring but will start the season in the minors...

Miami MarlinsOutfielder Christian Yelich tore the cover off the ball this spring, with five home runs and 14 runs batted in. He was assigned to minor-league camp but is expected to see time in Miami at some point this season... one of the reasons Yelich was given a long look this spring is because of projected center-fielder Justin Ruggiano’s back problems. The 30-year-old should be ready to start the season... veteran right-hander Kevin Slowey, a non-roster invitee, earned the fifth starter job ahead of young Jacob Turner, who was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans... Logan Morrison (knee surgery) is out to begin 2013, so veteran first baseman Casey Kotchman should replace him...

Milwaukee BrewersThe Brewers were not content with their projected starting rotation as the spring unfolded so they signed veteran right-hander Kyle Lohse, formerly with the Cardinals. He is expected to bump either Mike Fiers or Wily Peralta to the bullpen... veteran infielder Alex Gon-zalez, a natural shortstop, is expected to play first base while Corey Hart is out of action for the first month or so... unheralded outfielder Khris Davis was a spring training revelation and may have secured a bench job, at least to start the season... oft-injured pitching pros-pect Mark Rogers, now 27 years of age, will begin the year on the 15-day DL due to a shoulder issue...

Minnesota TwinsThe talk of Twins camp this spring was without a doubt center-fielder Aaron Hicks, a 2008 first-round pick who was given a clear path to a starting gig after trades involving both Denard Span (Washington) and Ben Revere (Philadelphia). The speedy switch-hitter displayed surprising power in the exhibition schedule, but is still expected to bat leadoff to kick off the regular schedule... lefty Scott Diamond (elbow) will start the season on the disabled list but is not expected to be out of action for very long... the battle for second base between veteran Jamey Carroll and Brian Dozier came right down to the wire, and may continue well into the regular schedule...

New York MetsInjuries were a big factor at Mets camp this spring, especially regarding ace Johan Santana, reliever Frank Francisco, third baseman David Wright, second base-man Daniel Murphy and outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Santana will begin 2013 on the 15-day DL, while the others are question marks... veteran non-roster invitee Marlon Byrd and former A’s prospect Collin Cowgill took advantage of the injury to Nieuwenhuis and could start the season in right and center field, respectively... if Murphy isn’t ready for Opening Day, the versatile Jor-dany Valdespin will replace him... lefty Jonathon Niese will start on Opening Day in place of Santana...

New York YankeesThe Yankees will likely be without four key everyday players when the regular season begins: Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez. That’s why the club added veteran outfielders Brennan Boesch and Vernon Wells during spring training. They may platoon in left field during Granderson’s absence... Eduardo Nunez figures to see a lot of playing time during Jeter’s absence, and may play a lot against left-handers even when No. 2 returns to action... projected fourth starter Phil Hughes will begin 2013 on the 15-day DL due to a back problem, so both Ivan Nova and David Phelps will be part of the rotation temporarily...

Oakland AthleticsJapanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima struggled badly with the bat this spring. As a result, Jed Lowrie (who may have started at second or third base instead) will likely play his natural position (SS) to start 2013. With Jemile Weeks having been optioned to Triple-A Sacra-mento, the second-base job figures to go to either Scott Sizemore or Eric Sogard... the A’s added first baseman Nate Freiman off waivers from Houston during the spring. A Rule 5 draftee, Freiman needs to remain on the 25-man roster for all of 2013... closer Grant Balfour started the Cactus League schedule late due to a knee problem but he should be ready for Opening Day...

Philadelphia PhilliesIf there were still doubts about Domonic Brown’s ability to become an everyday outfielder with the Phillies, he erased them with an outstanding spring. He’s scheduled to play left field most of the time. Projected right-fielder Delmon Young will start out on the disabled list, so John Mayberry (who may see time in left field against left-handed pitching once Young returns) should play regularly in right field for the time being... there are concerns about veteran starter Roy Halladay, whose velocity was down this spring. He also battled the flu but should be ready for Opening Day... Philadel-phia will go with either Jimmy Rollins or Ben Revere in the leadoff role...(G

Top 10 International Rookies

1. Hyun-Jin Ryu (SP), Dodgers. The Dodg-ers paid a lot to get him. The pressure is on to perform.2. Yasiel Puig (OF), Dodgers. The Cuban dazzled in the spring. He may make Andre Ethier expendable.3. Kyuji Fujikawa (RP), Cubs. When the Cubs deal closer Carlos Marmol, Fujikawa will take over.4. Leonys Martin (CF), Rangers. The Cuban speedster should platoon with Craig Gentry this year.5. Hak-Ju Lee (SS), Rays. If he’s ready, he could supplant Yunel Escobar later this season.6. Tsuyoshi Wada (P), Orioles. Injured last year, Wada could be used as either a starter or reliever in 2013.7. Hiroyuki Nakajima (SS), Athletics. De-spite a terrible spring, Nakajima may still be in Oakland’s plans.8. Noel Arguelles (SP), Royals. The Cuban lefty reached Double-A ball last year. He is talented.9. Gerardo Concepcion (SP), Cubs. Chi-cago will take a long-term approach with this Cuban defector.10. Ronnier Mustelier (OF/IF), Yankees. The versatile Cuban can hit, so he may find his way to the Bronx.

Page 4: 2013 PRESEASON UPDATE - Sportsguides.sportsforecaster.com/downloads/tsf/2013-baseball-update.pdfCincinnati Reds In one of the most intriguing spring battles at Reds camp, 24-year-old

Pittsburgh PiratesRotation injuries to Francisco Liriano, Jeff Karstens and Charlie Morton have opened up two spots for left-hand-ers Jonathan Sanchez and Jeff Locke, at least for the start of 2013. Sanchez was a non-roster invitee, while the 25-year-old Locke made six starts for the Bucs last season... veteran glove man John McDonald was acquired via trade from Arizona to provide some insur-ance all over the infield, particularly at shortstop (where Clint Barmes is coming off a bad offensive campaign, and he also struggled this spring)... new catcher Rus-sell Martin (shoulder) struggled at the dish throughout the spring, after pulling out of the 2013 WBC...

San Diego PadresRookie Jedd Gyorko should be in the Opening Day lineup, but where? With third baseman Chase Headley out for at least a month, Gyorko may move back to his natural third base position. However, the team’s second option at second base (behind Gyorko), infielder Logan Forsythe, is also injured. Therefore, Gyorko may move around the infield in April... top pitching prospect Casey Kelly (Tommy John surgery) will miss the entire cam-paign... left-fielder Carlos Quentin was slowed by a knee injury this spring but is expected to be ready for Opening Day... Tyson Ross looks like the fifth starter to begin the season, with Andrew Cashner in relief (for now)...

San Francisco GiantsFirst baseman Brandon Belt had a great spring in the Cactus League, but he was slowed a little bit because of a back/neck injury late in camp. He is expected to be ready for Opening Day... third baseman Pablo San-doval battled an elbow problem this spring. Like Belt, Sandoval is expected to be ready for Opening Day, but

he is more questionable... veteran right-hander Chad Gaudin may be the latest reclamation project for the Giants’ pitching staff. The 30-year-old reliever earned a job as a non-roster invitee and will pitch in middle or long relief... projected third starter Tim Lincecum battled blister issues early in spring and struggled with his command...

Seattle MarinersThe M’s still have seven players (Justin Smoak, Kend-rys Morales, Michael Morse, Jason Bay, Raul Ibanez, Franklin Gutierrez and Michael Saunders) to fit into just five positions: first base, all three outfield spots and the DH role. The good news is all seven had strong spring numbers, so it’s a nice problem to have for a club that has had a ton of trouble scoring runs in recent years... right-hander Brandon Maurer, 22, was a big surprise this spring and earned the No. 4 spot in the Seattle rotation. He pitched at Double-A Jackson last season. Blake Beavan will serve as the fifth starter, despite a rough spring... Bay is a candidate to lead off this year...

St. Louis CardinalsWith veteran Chris Carpenter (thoracic outlet syn-drome) possibly done for his career, an opening in the rotation was created this spring. Rookie Shelby Miller won the fifth starter job over Joe Kelly, and he’s expected to be among the top freshmen in the National League in 2013... Pete Kozma will play shortstop this year with Rafael Furcal (Tommy John surgery) done for the season... Matt Carpenter, who made a nice transi-tion to second base this spring, could begin 2013 at the hot corner to replace the injured David Freese... young outfielder Oscar Taveras, just 20 years of age, proved he belonged in the big leagues with a great spring...

Tampa Bay RaysOne of the best battles of the spring featured right-handers Jeff Niemann and Roberto Hernandez for the Rays’ fifth starter job. Both competed until the very end, and both ultimately made the Opening Day roster. Hernandez may be better suited to a relief role, though, due to his great sinker... infielder Sean Rodriguez, who has played all over the infield during his time with Tampa Bay, may see a lot of at-bats as a first baseman this year, particularly against left-handed pitching... there’s a chance the Rays may use new shortstop Yunel Escobar as a run producer (possibly hitting fifth in the order). He has mostly batted first or second in the big leagues...

Texas RangersThe favorite to win the fifth starter job in Texas was left Martin Perez, but a fractured forearm killed those plans. As a result, 24-year-old right-hander Nick Tepesch may begin the season as the No. 5 man in the rotation, although lefty Brad Mills (claimed off waiv-ers from the Angels) may still get a crack at the gig... arguably the two top prospects in the Rangers system, infielders Jurickson Profar and Mike Olt will both start 2013 at Triple-A Round Rock... Dominican rookie Leury Garcia has won a backup infield job... first baseman Mitch Moreland, who may have been on the bubble at the start of spring training, put up great numbers in the Cactus League...

Toronto Blue JaysThere were no openings in Toronto’s starting rotation at the start of spring training but lefty Ricky Romero pitched his way off the team. In fact, he was optioned to Single-A Dunedin. Fellow lefty J.A. Happ will begin 2013 as the fifth starter... third baseman Brett Lawrie (rib cage) will open the season on the disabled list, so utility infielders Maicer Izturis and Mark DeRosa should fill in. Izturis appears to have lost the second-base battle to speedy Emilio Bonifacio... first baseman David Cooper was released by the Blue Jays midway through the spring. He wouldn’t have made the club anyway, since he could be out all of 2013 due to a back injury...

Washington NationalsThe Nationals are expected to use catchers Kurt Su-zuki and Wilson Ramos in alternating fashion, at least to start the 2013 campaign. Both did well this spring. Suzuki brings more veteran game-calling experience but Ramos has the edge in power and run production... veteran right-hander Chris Young, who was trying to land a job in the starting rotation this spring, despite the fact there were no openings, was predictably released late in spring training... hard-throwing reliever Henry Rodriguez battled elbow soreness for much of the spring. However, he could be ready for Opening Day... Bryce Harper was among the top players in all of baseball this spring...
