The sea, our parish....The Mission to Seafarers is the world’s leading maritime charity providing professional welfare support services and ship visiting to seafarers, mariners and sailors of all faiths, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Identified by our ‘Flying Angel’ logo, we work in 250 ports around the world, providing assistance to the 1.3 million working men and women who crew the merchant shipping fleet.

“I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Matthew 25: 31-46

Founded in the United Kingdom in 1856, and entirely funded by voluntary legacies and donations, the Mission offers a comprehensive ministry of care for all those facing peril at sea. Mission teams regularly meet with seafarers suffering from post-traumatic stress, illness, isolation, loneliness and fatigue as emergencies at sea put lives in danger and port stopover times are continually eroded.

We are highly connected at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and are working to build more integrated relationships with the Anglican Church internationally, the British Government and the European Union on all matters related to welfare concerns in the shipping industry. We are a watchful, discreet and critical friend of all concerned, to ensure the best outcomes for seafarers in need.

The Mission provides Flying Angel clubs in 100 ports and offers a Christian welcome in a safe haven. A Mission centre typically offers counselling, affordable communications, advice on employment issues, a place for prayer and reflection, donated warm clothing, hospitality and spiritual support. In a further 150 ports, local honorary chaplains and volunteers undertake invaluable ship visiting, transport, and support services. Our ship visitors take phone cards and internet-linked laptops on board, so seafarers unable to come ashore can contact their families.

All around the world, the Mission provides help and hope to seafarers, in places of greatest need.

A Litany of Intercession for Seafarers

Prayers

For the world’s harvest, for the fruits of land and sea, for the creativity of different nations and cultures, and for the seafarers who convey them to our ports. Let us bless the Lord.

All We thank you, O Lord.

For the courage, steadfastness, and devotion of all those who serve at sea, and for skills of seamanship, engineering and navigation. Let us bless the Lord.

All We thank you, O Lord.

For the work of those who build and equip our ships and provide for their safety; and for the dedicated service of chaplains and those who minister to the needs of seafarers. Let us bless the Lord.

All We thank you, O Lord.

For those who serve in the Navies of the world, for merchant seafarers, and for those of the fishing fleets. Lord in your mercy,

All hear our prayer.

For seafarers who are far from home and loved ones, who know the pain of isolation, anxiety and fear, and who long for friendship and support. Lord in your mercy,

All hear our prayer.

For those who carry out the services of docks and harbours, who crew lifeboats, and who day and night keep watch over coasts. Lord in your mercy,

All hear our prayer.

For all young people who study the skills of the sea at training centres or as cadets. Lord in your mercy,

All hear our prayer.

For ship-owners, agents, and union representatives, and all organisations who care for seafarers and their families; and for the families of seafarers who face loneliness and anxiety about loved ones at sea. Lord in your mercy,

All hear our prayer.

Bless, O Lord, all who sail upon the seas, and all who care for their well-being, in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Amen.

IntroductionIn the middle of England stands the National Memorial Arboretum, an area of 152 acres dedicated to the memory of those who have served their country, or who have died in conflict since 1945. It consists of some 50,000 maturing trees and over 200 memorials.

2,535 of those trees make up the Merchant Navy Convoy, each representing a ship lost during the Second World War, and the 31,908 seafarers who were also lost in that conflict. The Convoy as a whole is dedicated to over 46,000 British merchant seafarers and fishermen who were lost in conflict during the twentieth century.

It is a reminder of the peril in going to sea, and does not touch the total worldwide who have been lost in conflicts, through shipping disasters, by accident and through piracy.

For many seafarers there is no grave but the sea. They have no permanent memorial to mark their passing. Their memorial is in the memory of those they leave behind, the family and friends from whom they were parted by time and distance, just by being at sea.

In the book of Ecclesiasticus we find a hymn in honour of our ancestors (chapter 44). It sings the “praises of famous men” to whom “the Lord apportioned to them great glory . . . . Some of them have left behind a name, so that others declare their praise.” But for the majority “there is no memory . . . . But these also were godly men, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten . . . . Their bodies are buried in peace, but their name lives on generation after generation.”

For many the seafarer is out of sight and out of mind, despite our dependency on them for the transportation of the necessities of life. They face many dangers in going to sea and their voyages may not always bring them to a safe haven. They deserve our prayers and remembrance that they may not perish “as though they had never been born”.

Andrew W. HuckettPort Chaplain Southampton

Lifetime Psalm (from Uruguay)Praise my soul our good Lord, sing songs to his name, for he has brought my life into fresh waters when I was thirsty. He has fed me with the Bread of Life when I was starving. He has sustained me along all my days and never has put me to shame. Praise my soul our good Lord, for all his goodness.

A Prayer (from the Caribbean)Dear God, the waters that wash the shores of our islands remind us that your Spirit is moving over our world. Forgive us for not taking good care of the resources of the sea. In our indifference, we pollute by casting off waste – disused cans, bottles, sticks, oil, any and everything into the waters. Help us to become a people who take greater pride in what you have entrusted to us. May we ever strive to make you proud of us. Help us work towards the time when our waters challenge us to the need for cleanliness in every sphere of existence. As your Son called people who made a living by the waters to follow him, so may we hear your voice beckoning us to serve you. Amen.

Psalm of the Pacific (from Papua New Guinea) You who turn storms into gentle winds, and troubled seas into tranquil waters, you who make yams grow and bananas blossom, wash our people with justice; teach us with righteousness; speak to us daily; strengthen us to serve you.

A Benediction (from a Native American)Give us strength to understand and eyes to see, teach us to walk the soft earth as relatives to all that lives.
