PGA Championship Tickets for Charity

A total of 93 youth- and family-focused charities that were shown to provide health, education and wellness services in the region were selected to receive two pairs of tickets to the PGA Champion-ship to use to support their annual fundraising efforts. Charities held raffles, silent auctions, etc. to award these tickets and to ben-efit from the results. A total of $230,000 was raised for these local charities through this program.

Golf Balls on ParadeA partnership between The Big Parade and the 2013 PGA Championship, resulted in nearly 40 larger-than-life golf balls being designed by local artists, sold to regional companies and individuals, and put on display throughout the region for all to enjoy. This unique community art project added to the excitement of the PGA Championship. A portion of the sale of each golf ball will be split equally among four charities: Hillside Work Scholarship Connection, Golisano Children’s Hospi-tal, Gay Maney REACH for the Green Scholarship, and a charity of each sponsor’s choice. It is expect-ed that approximately $65,000 will ultimately be raised by this program.

Levy Restaurants Help to Reduce

Area HungerLevy Restaurants, the leader in sports and entertainment dining concessions, supports it neighbors through causes and organizations dedicated to reducing hunger for children and families. For our tournament, Levy Restaurants made a commitment to support the local community through its Con-cession for Charity Program. Holy Childhood, Ronald McDonald House, Rochester Rotary, Camp Good Days, and Notre Dame Learning Academy provided approximately 275 volunteers per day to run the concessions. In return, the charity received 10 per-cent of the gross sales from the five concession stands at the course. The estimated value to benefit these charities was $110,000.

the Press, Rules Officials, and PGA of America officers considered our Oak Hill East Course one of the finest golf courses they have ever seen. Congratulations and thank you to Jeff Corcoran and his grounds crew – we are fortunate to have such talent and commitment. We have a great partnership with the PGA of America and appreciate the relationship we have enjoyed over the years. This year’s PGA Championship proved once again this partnership is a WIN-NER. Since 2011 we have been in the capable hands of Ryan Cannon and his on-site team of John, Rachel, Nate, Erin, Kevin and Donae. Their direction, experience and work ethic lead the way with thoughtful planning and a suc-cessful implementation. They have become our friends, and are clearly part of the Oak Hill family. Finally, I want to thank Kevin Horey, John Post and Ron Pluta as well as the entire 95th PGA Championship Executive Commit-tee, Advisory Group and Board of Governors for their leadership and guidance throughout the plan-ning of this great event. A special thank you also goes out to the over 60 Oak Hill Chairs/Co-Chairs for the flawless execution of their respective committees, and thanks to all the Volunteers who carried out their tasks. And lastly, thanks to all Oak Hill members for your continued support despite the inconvenience and disruption an event of this magnitude can cause. As you reflect on this memorable 95th PGA Championship week you should all feel very good you helped advance the rich and storied tradi-tion of our great Oak Hill Country Club. Rochester Museum and Science Center PGA Championship History Exhibit

The Rochester Museum and Science Center held the grand opening of its new PGA Championship History Exhibit, celebrating the Champions of the “Season’s Final Major” and honoring a tradition that traces more than 95 years, the PGA Cham-pionship during Media Day in June. Collections on display track the PGA Championship from the beginning, with champions like Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Rochester’s very own Walter Hagen…to today’s game featuring heroes like Jack Nick-laus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Defending PGA Champion Rory McIlroy. The exhibit was open all summer to the delight of golf fans.

Media DayJune 3, 2013 started the real excitement of the tournament when defending champion, Rory McIlroy came to town with his father, Gerry McIlroy and long-time cad-die JP Fitzgerald. Rory met with the media, played the East Course (finishing at 3 under par) with Craig Harmon, PGA of America President Ted Bishop and CBS Executive Director Rob Correa, visited the Museum and Science Center Exhibit and saw a little bit of the area.

Lexmark Tree Planting

The Nature Conservancy teamed up with Lexmark International, Inc. on August 4th to support The PGA of America with a tree-plant-ing event at Rothfuss Park in Penfield. The new trees will offset the impact of printing and paper products needed for the 95th PGA Championship. Oak Hill members and staff dug in to help with this “green” initiative.

On Monday, August 5, the PGA of America invited top female executives from Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo to Beyond the Green: An Elevating Experience for Executive and Young Professional Women. This all day seminar was held in hopes of increasing women’s interest in golf – both recreationally and as a prospective industry to work in and with. The women who attended went behind the scenes to view the inner workings of the tournament and participated in networking sessions, golf clinics and panel discussions with other women leaders from various industries. Rochester is only the second city to have a Beyond the Green experi-ence – the first was St. Louis in May of this year at the Senior PGA Championship.

Hill of Fame Ceremony On Monday, August 5, Tom Watson was hon-ored with a tree on Oak Hill’s historic Hill of Fame. This was the 26th tree dedicated on the Hill. The Hlll of Fame was founded in 1956 by Dr. John R. Williams to recognize the immor-tals of golf and distinguished citizens who have enriched the American way of life.

John Feinstein, TV commentator and renowned author, introduced Tom Watson at the Hill of Fame cer-emony. Feinstien has authored many books including Caddie for Life, the story of Tom Watson’s long-time caddie Bruce Edwards, who died of ALS in 2004. Tom Watson and John Feinstein added their support to the Bruce Edwards Foundation for ALS research, which has raised millions of dollars for charitable causes. Tom Watson, with 39 PGA Tour victories, including 8 major cham-pionships, 14 Champions Tour wins, a winning record in Ryder Cup play and 5 PGA Tour Money titles, is one of the legends of the game.

He captained the successful American Ryder Cup team in 1993 and will serve again as cap-tain in 2014 in Gleneagles, Scotland. Known as a true sportsman and gentleman, Tom Watson is an ideal candidate for the Hill of Fame. Bill Reeves, Hill of Fame Chairman

Youth Golf Clinic On Monday, children from many area charities converged on Gen-esee Valley Park to learn about the game of golf from local golf pros who donated their time to teach the basics of golf to 250-300 youth. After the clinic the partici-pants were able to attend the PGA Championship. Youth from the organizations selected to partici-pate in the Community Relations Ticket for Charity Program attend-ed the Youth Clinic.

PGA H.O.P.E.Helping Our Patriots Everywhere (H.O.P.E) was designed to introduce golf to veterans with disabilities in the effort to enhance a veteran’s mental, social, physical and emotional well-being. The PGA Founda-tion, the Western New York Section PGA, and PGA Professionals part-nered with the VA Western New York Healthcare System to initiate this program. A special reception was held at the Oppenheimer chalet on Tues-day, with PGA Representatives, as well as Colonel Gary Yaple from the Veterans Outreach Center and Digby Clements, SVP Oppenheimer funds.

REACH for the Green is a college scholarship program for Rochester City School District students that is partnered with the PGA and is different in that it endures beyond tournament week to provide annu-al awards. A total of 9 RCSD stu-dents have been awarded scholar-ships for college. It is a tangible reminder of how our community charities benefit from having the PGA Championship held in Roch-ester. Contributions to REACH for the Green were provided by The PGA of America, Oak Hill Country Club members, Rochester Business Classic and the 2013 PGA Cham-pionship Golf Balls on Parade fundraiser. In honor of the late Gay Maney and her efforts as Executive Director, the PGA of America Foundation, Oak Hill CC and the Community Foundation agreed to rename the Scholarship, the Gay Maney REACH for the Green scholarship.

PGA Distinguished Service Award On Wednesday evening, six-time major champion Lee Trevino, argu-ably golf’s most engaging personality as a competitor while quietly conducting a tireless philanthropic life, was awarded the 2013 PGA Distinguished Service Award at a ceremony held at the Riverside Con-vention Center, featuring music by Michael Bolton. “Lee Trevino is the classic rags to riches story in golf. Throughout his life, Lee has never lost sight of his roots and his humble beginnings,” said PGA of Amer-ica President Ted Bishop. “He was a self-made player who persevered and won championships because he owned his golf swing. He has spent countless hours during his life helping others. In the history of The PGA of America, no one has appreciated or valued membership in our Association more than Lee. He is the quintessential PGA Professional - player, teacher, and humanitarian”. The PGA Distinguished Service Award, inaugurated in 1988, honors outstanding individuals who display leadership and humanitarian qualities, including integrity, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the game of golf.

Habitat for Humanity As a way of giving back and leav-ing a legacy in a community where a major tournament is held, the PGA of America’s spouses have partnered with the PGA Tour Wives Association (PTWA) in a philanthropic alliance. This year, in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the PTWA, with the PGA tournament here at Oak Hill, the PTWA chose Flower City Habitat for Humanity as the recipient of their generosity. Oak Hill members, wives of players, and PGA members donated hours to building this home. The project, a testimony to a real “blitz build”, was completed on Wednesday, with the keys to their new home being presented to the Galleti/Rosario family. The family agreed to pro-vide 450 hours of labor on habitat homes, half on their new house and half on other habitat houses. They also received a 30-year, interest free mortgage on their new home.
