2013 Annual Report

Dear FrienDs,

It is especially satisfying to check in with you at the completion of 2013, looking back at a year in which we achieved official recognition as a nationally accredited land trust. The Land Trust Alliance accreditation seal is a mark of distinction in land conservation. It recognizes organizations for meeting national standards for excellence, upholding the public trust, and ensuring that conservation efforts are permanent.

It’s the focus on the permanent part of that vision that is intensifying as we’ve rounded the corner into 2014 and beyond. The kind of farming we’ll need for the future will depend on the types of sustainable practices that the Farmland Trust requires on each of its conserved properties. Each year we work with farmers to ensure the land and water will be better off than the year before. This is stewardship. Though you help us conserve farms bound by the borders of an easement or a lease, our collective impact can extend beyond those, to the biome below, and to the waterways, habitats and communities surrounding. This is restoration.

We believe that if we’re conserving farmland forever, it should be capable of producing food forever.

So while we continue to fully celebrate the farmland preservation successes of 2013—including that of 95-acre Sturgeon Farm, now home to Dropstone Farms—we will also be working to ensure that conserved farmland will propagate healthy soil, air, water, and of course, food for future generations. Raising increasing funds for stewardship and conservation will take more commitment and support, from more sources, than ever before.

With your help, we’ve demonstrated that protecting nature and farmland need not be divergent concepts—and in fact, that it is our responsibility to ensure that the lands in our care are not just producing healthy food for our communities, but also promoting health in the ecosystems surrounding them.

2014 Looking AheadHelsing Junction: the Trust’s first farm conservation easement in Thurston County is on its way.

Shelstad Farm: We’re working to close another Pierce County conservation easement in 2014.

On the Farm continues in 2014 with a diverse array of offerings, including yoga on the farm, birding, geology, and photography events. We also are continuing to partner with SIFF to offer “On the Farm at the movies”—a series of films featuring topics having to do with sustainable agriculture and food.

A wide variety of organizational improvements, including an updated strategic plan, new tools to maintain land affordability for farmers and formalized marketing and engagement plans.

New Conservation initiatives: We are working to incorporate and test affordability measures in our conservation easements, with the goal of making conserved land more affordable to future generations of farmers and producers.

2013 Key Accomplishments

After an accreditation process lasting two years and involving extensive

documentation and rigorous reviews, PCC Farmland Trust was officially

recognized as a nationally accredited land trust. Accreditation provides the

public with an assurance that accredited land trusts meet high standards for

quality and that the results of their conservation work are permanent.

Sturgeon Farm saved! Dating back to the 1920s, the farm was once a thriving dairy, and

features the prime agricultural soils found throughout the Puyallup River Valley. The property is

now farmed by Lauren manes and Garth Highsmith of Dropstone Farms. They raise cows, pigs,

lambs, turkeys, chickens, and ducks. The preservation of this farm would not have been possible

without the donors who stepped up during the summer-long capital campaign that allowed us

to close before state funds were available.

Completed a GIS analysis of priority farmlands to target for conservation in our two focus

areas: the Puyallup and Snoqualmie Valleys. In 2014, we’ll be using these GIS results to inform

our work with partners, and to reach out to landowners to target the highest priority lands in

tandem with partner organizations–with the goal of accelerating overall farmland conservation

in our focus areas.

2013 marked the launch of our On the Farm series

(sponsored by Chipotle mexican Grill). Each event

highlighted a topic related to sustainable farming and gave

participants the chance to make connections with local

food and farmers. In 2013, supporters visited baby lambs

at Camelot Downs Farm, learned about holistic heard

management at Jubilee Farm, and much more.

October Pierce County tour: With brand-new Dropstone Farms and preservation of the

Reise Farm in 2012, we had a lot to celebrate in Pierce County! In October we headed south for

a multi-farm tour in the Puyallup Valley, which also included tours of Cheryl the Pig Lady Farm,

Clean Food Farm, and Sanford’s Farm.

Completed our fourth year of Local Chefs for Local Farms

events, featuring maria Hines, Ethan Stowell, Jason Franey and

mark Canlis.

Continued key restoration and stewardship work,

including monitoring 1294 acres and 13 farm properties,

hosting three major restoration events, and hiring a WCC/

AmeriCorps Intern.

Launched our redesigned website—now leaner, cleaner and better organized, our website

includes more information on our individual preserved farms, our regions of concentration, and

all the different ways supporters can learn more and get involved.

gary Fisher: a legaCy

We are very saddened to share the news of the passing of a farmer, Gary Fisher, in early 2014. Gary and his wife Lois were the first to donate an easement, of Camelot Downs Farm, to the Farmland Trust in 2010. The Fishers dedicated their farm and their retirement years to cultivating and teaching about heritage breed animals through 4H, farm tours, and community involvement. Gary was passionate about educating the public about sustainable pasture management, holistic livestock health, and good stewardship. Lois continues to manage the farm and carry on Gary’s legacy.
