2013OPPORTUNITY FAIR

Pratt Institute

JOIN USWe are excited to have you join the Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD) at Pratt Institute for our annual Opportunity Fair. This year will mark nine years that our department has produced this event. Beginning in 2005 as an internship recruiting fair, we are pleased that it has grown into a broader recruiting event where students and alumni can meet employers seeking to fill volunteer, internship, freelance, part and full time positions.

We have also made some exciting additions to this event, including the FairBoost tables and the Roundtable Discussions. We think you’ll find the event useful, and hope to hear your thoughts on the experience.

A NOTE FROM RHONDA SCHALLER & LAURA KEEGAN

Have a great day, and keep us posted on your success! Rhonda Schaller | Director, Center for Career & Professional Development & Laura Keegan | Assistant Director for Experiential Education

On behalf of the Center for Career & Professional Development (CCPD) we are delighted to welcome you to the 2013 Opportunity Fair. Today’s opportunity fair brings our industry partners in education together with you: students, recent graduates and creative professionals for a very special day of networking, building relationships, and establishing strong professional ties. Our goal is to help you maintain your creative momentum and expand your horizons so you can follow your dreams.

This fair would not happen without the support of the CCPD staff, including our wonderful Career Ambassadors, and the amazing support of the Division of Student Affairs. We are very excited for this year’s fair and would like to give special thanks to the entire Pratt community who worked so hard to bring you this spectacular event.

Attending the 2013 Opportunity Fair will be a wonderful professional development experience, where you will encounter a whirlwind of information, people, emotions and ideas. It might also prove overwhelming if you are not prepared to take advantage of all the opportunities you can find at the event. To help you be better prepared we have crafted a list of suggestions to facilitate the best possible experience for all participants.

What to bring to the 2013 Opportunity Fair?

• Resumes: Bring multiple copies of your resume—at least 15-20.

• Business or promo cards: If you don’t have any, you might consider ordering on moo.com.

• Portfolio, reel, or work samples: Spend time in advance thinking about how you will show your work. If you are showing your work on a laptop or tablet device, make sure it is easily accessible. Practice showing your work and talking about it. If you don’t have a portfolio you can create one on Behance atportfolios.pratt.edu. Include the address of your portfolio site on your business cards and resumes so employers can view your work at a later time.

• Note-taking materials: Bring a pen and notepad for taking notes during sessions, jotting down ideas based on what you hear, and next steps to help you organize your thoughts when reflecting upon your experience and following up on the fair. If you are using a laptop or tablet to show your work, you won’t be able to use it to take notes.

• Appropriate attire: You will be speaking with recruiters and will want to make a good impression. You should be dressed as if you were going to an interview.

• Snacks: You will speak to many people back-to-back, and staying alert and focused throughout the day will help you get the most out of your time. Bring snacks to help you stay alert.

• Bag: Bring a folder or bag for handouts, brochures, and business cards given to you at the fair.

What to do before the Opportunity Fair

• Research the companies that will be at the fair, especially those you want to meet.

• Start by reading the company descriptions at the end of this document. The descriptions include information about what positions they offer and who they want to meet.

• Pick your top ten “must meet” companies so you know who you will target when you get to the fair. Visit their websites the night before to refresh yourself on the company.

It’s perfectly normal to be nervous. If you do the research beforehand, you’ll have more confidence in yourself and be less nervous.

MAKE THE MOST OFYOUR OPPORTUNITY FAIR EXPERIENCE

On the day of the Opportunity Fair

• Arrive on time. Come as close to the start of the fair as you can – 11AM.

• It’s best to arrive early while the recruiters are fresh and not too tired to engage with you in a great conversation. You’ll also have a better chance of getting to speak with the representatives you want to. Those who arrive early will have first access to recruiters before the fair fills to capacity.

• Check in at the Student Registration Table and feel free to ask questions if you are unsure about what to do or how to get started.

• There will be three (3) FairBoost tables for you during the event. Talk with a Career Ambassador and CCPD staff who hosting a FairBoost Table who can answer your questions and help you prepare for networking at the fair.

• Join a Roundtable Discussion from 12 to 2 PM. You can join a discussion at any time, and will get to speak with industry professionals about important topics. This is another opportunity to network besides meeting recruiters.

• When you arrive, take a few minutes to survey the layout of the room with a map and a program. All recruiting tables will be organized in alphabetical order.

• Orient yourself and find the location of the companies you want to meet. Make a plan for how you will make your way to each of them.

• Turn off your cell phone.

Talking to Recruiters

• Prepare your 30- second pitch. This is a quick introduction about who you are, how you’re different, and why you’re memorable.

• Practice a clear, concise introduction. State your full name, year and area of study; remember to make eye contact; and shake hands.

• Express interest and enthusiasm to the company representative about his or her internships or job openings.

• Ask the company representative to tell you more about the available openings.

• Give the company representative your resume, business or promo card, and offer your portfolio for themto view.

• Ask about the application procedure and what steps you should take next.

• Before you leave, ask for a business card. When you leave the table, you can make notes on the back of the card. You will also have the person’s correct name and title so you can follow up with them properly.

• Thank the company representative for his or her time and inform them that you look forward to hearing from them.

Roundtable Discussions and FairBoost Tables

• Join Roundtable Discussions for opportunities to speak directly to professionals about specific career related issues.

• There will be about 8 Roundtables in action from 12-2 PM, hosted by industry professionals on various topics.

• FairBoost tables will be hosted by CCPD staff and Career Ambassadors.

• Seek help at the FairBoost tables and talk about topics like using your LinkedIn profile effectively, how to make small talk, reviewing your resume, and more.

What to do after the Opportunity Fair

• Send a short thank-you note the day after the fair (or Monday) to each company representative you met at the fair.

• Your thank-you note should act as confirmation of your interest in the organization and provide a reminder of the skills you can bring to the company.

• Remind them that you look forward to hearing from them. If you don’t hear from them in two weeks, send them another note with your resume attached.

• There are many ways to use technology and social media to enhance your networking, and opportunity fair follow-up. Follow companies on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+.

• Reach out to recruiters you missed. Contact them via email to let them know you are interested in their company, but were unable to meet them at the fair. Do your research first to see if there might be an open position (internship or job) that you can apply for, and if you have any questions, include them in the email. You can start by networking, and then use that contact if a job opens up later on.

What is contributing to changes in your firm and or the industry as a whole? At Collectrium we are constantly needing to adapt to the fact that galleries, collectors, artists, art advisories, auction houses and art fairs have become increasingly alike and the boundary lines that were once rigid are far more flexible in terms of who sells, buys, markets or even speculates about art.

As the art market as a whole becomes more and more of an interdependent globalized specialty industry, it is essential for the products that serve this industry to be more creative, thoughtful and intuitive. Keywords:Project management, art advising, business development, and art direction
