President Geoffrey MearnsGeoffrey S. Mearns became NKU’s fifth president on August 1, 2012. Prior to

coming to NKU, he was provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Cleveland State University, a public university with more than 16,000 students.

He became provost in February 2010. In this role, he oversaw eight academic deans and five vice provosts. He supervised various academic support functions such as the library; student advising and student services; and faculty recruitment, reappointment, promotion and tenure.

Prior to becoming provost, he spent four and a half years as dean and professor of law at Cleveland State’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. During his tenure as dean, he was actively engaged in fundraising for the college, helping to enhance its scholarship pool and overseeing an $8.8 million renovation of the law building. Under his leadership, alumni and private giving increased substantially, and the quality and diversity of the law school’s class improved. Mearns also oversaw continual improvement in the school’s bar passage rates. At Cleveland-Marshall, Mearns taught complex federal criminal investigations and prosecutions, criminal law, and white collar crime.

He previously taught at the Case Western Reserve University School of Law and New York Law School. Prior to joining Cleveland State, Mearns was a practicing lawyer

for more than 15 years, including serving as a federal prosecutor in the United States Department of Justice. His record of community service includes serving on several judicial screening committees and serving as a trustee for several Cleveland non-profit agencies. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Science Community.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Yale University in 1981 and a juris doctor from the University of Virginia in 1987. After graduating from law school, he clerked for the Hon. Boyce F. Martin, Jr., of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in Louisville. Mearns and his wife, Jennifer, have five children.

On June 26, 2013, Northern Kentucky University unvieled Ken Bothof as the new Director of Athletics. Ken Bothof will take over for interim director of athletics Mike Cusack on August 19, 2013.

Bothof comes to NKU from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he has served as athletic director since 2002. Bothof’s tenure at Green Bay has been marked by great success both on the field and in the classroom, as well as tremendous growth in support for the school’s 16 athletic programs.

At Green Bay, Bothof was instrumental in raising $11 million in private funds to complete a $33 million renovation and expansion of the Phoenix Sports Center. He also developed an outdoor facilities plan that includes new soccer and softball facilities, as well as expanded recreational and intramural opportunities.

Under his leadership, the Green Bay women’s basketball team has won 11 straight Horizon League titles and five NCAA Tournament first-round games; the program’s first Sweet Sixteen appearance was in 2011. Men’s basketball posted consecutive 20-win seasons and postseason appearances in 2009 and 2010, while men’s soccer, volleyball and softball each earned their first trip to the NCAA Division I Tournament. During his tenure, Phoenix student-athletes have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher in each of the last 23 semesters. Green Bay is one of only two Horizon League schools to be ranked in the top 100 in the NCSA Athletic Recruiting Collegiate Power Rankings, which recognizes academic and athletic success and student-athlete graduation rates.

During Bothof’s tenure, annual contributions to the Phoenix Fund have more than tripled and membership in the fund has quadrupled. Ticket revenues and corporate sponsorships have increased dramatically, and he also negotiated a five-year contract with Nelligan Sports Marketing for the development of radio rights and corporate sponsorships.

Bothof has also served as chair of the Horizon League Finance Committee and chaired the Horizon League Executive Committee. He serves as the conference’s representative to the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Executive Committee. Bothof is on the YMCA Board of Directors and is a member of the Downtown Green Bay Rotary Club.

Prior to his tenure at Green Bay, he served as associate athletic director for external operations at Saint Louis University, where he oversaw marketing and promotions, fundraising, corporate sponsorships, event management and ticket sales while also supervising three sports. Bothof served as associate athletic director and then senior associate athletic director at Idaho State University from 1990-95, where he developed corporate sponsorship plans and marketing programs, served as compliance coordinator and NCAA certification coordinator, and supervised 12 sports. He began his career at San Jose State University, where he served as assistant athletic director.

The NKU athletics department is set to begin its second year at the NCAA Division I level. A member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, NKU sponsors 15 intercollegiate sports – baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track and field and volleyball.

As impressive as any of the on-field success, however, was the fact that NKU student athletes posted a grade point average of 3.05 in the fall and 3.03 in the spring. In fact, the school’s student athletes have posted a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater during six of the last seven semesters.

NKU Athletics also launched a $6 million Go Gold fundraising campaign last year, and has raised nearly $3 million toward that goal.

Bothof earned his bachelor of arts in education from Buena Vista University, where he competed in baseball and basketball. The Slayton, Minn., native is married to Carrie and has two children – Tyson and Kendra.

John Basalyga is in his eleventh season on the bench for the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team. He boasts a collegiate coaching record of 137-54-20, has twice been named the Regional Coach of the Year and in 2010 was named the Division II National Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Basalyga and the Norse were nationally ranked in 47 of 48 weeks from 2007-2011.

In 2012, Basalyga and the Norse posted a 7-10-1 record in their first season at the Division I level. The team went 4-3-1 in the Atlantic Sun Conference, finishing 4th in the conference and unable to compete in the postseason due to reclassification.

In 2011, the Norse started the season ranked No. 1 in and posted a record of 14-5-0, finishing second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. It marked the sixth consecutive season the Norse advanced to NCAA postseason play. They defeated Northwood (Mich.) 2-0 in the first round before falling to Rockhurst 2-0 in the second round.

In 2010, Basalyga led his team to a record of 20-2-3 and captured his first NCAA national championship, defeating Rollins by a score of 3-2 in the final. It marked the fifth consecutive season that the Norse have advanced to NCAA postseason play and the first national title for NKU in any men’s sport. NKU was in the national rankings all season, including holding the No. 1 ranking. Additionally, the Norse claimed their first Great Lakes Valley Conference championship in 15 seasons with a 3-0 defeat over Indianapolis. Basalyga earned national coach of the year honors during the campaign.

In 2009, the Norse boss led the team to a 15-6-2 record and a fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament. Yet again, NKU was in the national spotlight, being ranked for a majority of the season, including holding the No. 1 ranking. NKU battled second-ranked Drury to a 1-0 loss in the first round.

In 2008, Basalyga set a new standard for excellence in NKU soccer, taking the Norse to the Division II National Semifinal after claiming a third straight Midwest Region championship. For the second straight season, the Norse found themselves a top the Division II polls in the No. 1 spot. The Norse finished with a 16-3-4 overall record and two of the team’s three seniors graduated as All-Americans, while sophomore Steven Beattie was named the Division II National Player of the Year.

In 2007, Basalyga made Great Lakes Valley Conference history, coaching the Norse to an unprecedented 13-0 conference record, as well as the school’s second consecutive Great Lakes Region title. The Norse rattled off 20-straight wins en route to a 22-2 final record, both school records. For the first time in school history, NKU was ranked No. 1 in the nation. The dominating performance earned Basalyga his second consecutive GLVC and Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year awards. The 2007 squad boasted eight players who would go on to graduate as All-Americans.

In 2006, Basalyga led the Norse to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament, and won the Great Lakes Region championship as the No. 2 seed. The squad matched a school record with 16 wins, and posted a NKU-best .795 winning percentage on the year.

In 2005, Basalyga’s NKU squad pulled off a first-round upset of third-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament. It marked the first time since 1997 that NKU had won a game in the GLVC Tournament. The Norse, who entered the tournament as the No. 6 seed, finished with an 11-8-2 record.

Basalyga led NKU to one of the nation’s top turnarounds in 2004, as the Norse posted a 12-6-2 overall record while posting a 6-3-1 in the GLVC. Basalyga’s team also featured 2004 GLVC Player of the Year Nate Madden.

During his first season at the helm, Basalyga guided a youthful NKU squad to a 4-9-3 overall record, including a 2-5-3 mark in the GLVC. In his coaching debut at NKU in 2003, Basalyga led his team to a 4-2 win over NCAA Division II power University of Findlay.

Prior to accepting the NKU job, Basalyga compiled a 325-93-58 record as boys’ soccer coach at Turpin High School in Cincinnati over the course of 24 years. He led Turpin to Ohio state championships in 1986, 2000 and 2001, and his teams produced 22 consecutive winning seasons.

He also led the Spartans to 15 sectional championships and was named the Ohio High School State Coach of the Year in 2001.

Basalyga is a 1973 graduate of Bowling Green State University. He earned four letters in baseball at Bowling Green. He also played ice hockey for three years and competed in soccer for one season at Bowling Green.

Basalyga and his wife, Linda, reside in Cincinnati. They have three children. His daughter, Lindsay Basalyga, is the women’s soccer head coach at Eastern Kentucky University.

Stephen McGill Graduate Assistant

Jeff Chaney enters his second season as John Basalyga’s head assistant coach. Chaney spent 16 years as an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky before joining the Norse in their inaugural season in Divison I in 2012.

Chaney served as the Wildcats goalkeeping coach since 2001, helping Wildcat netminders not only succeed at the collegiate level but at the professional level as well. Kentucky won three Conference-USA championships and made four appearances in the NCAA tournament during Chaney’s time at the school.

Before joining Kentucky, Chaney was an assistant at Lexington (Ky.) Catholic High School for three seasons.

Chaney is a native of Georgetown, Ky., and graduated from Scott County High School in 1984 where he was an all-state performer as a co-founder of the school’s soccer program. Chaney went on to continue his soccer career at Georgetown (Ky.) College where he earned NAIA All-District honors in 1985 and captained the Tigers for three seasons.

McGill enters his first season as an assistant coach in John Basalyga’s squad. He played thee seasons under Basalyga (2009-11), making 26 appearances for the Norse and notching three career assists in the midfield. He was part of the 2010 team that won the Division II National Championship.

McGill was named a high school All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America after his senior season at Turpin. He then spent two seasons at Bucknell University, redshirting his first year, before transferring to NKU after his freshman season. He graduted from NKU with a bachelor’s degree in International Studies in Spring 2012. He returned to his high school alma mater to coach the freshman soccer team, before rejoining Basalyga for the 2013 season.

McGill was born in Boston but was raised in Cincinnati by his parents and NKU alumni Tom and Diana McGill. Diana is currently a chemistry professor at NKU. McGill has enrolled into the Communications programs and is looking to make a career out of coaching.

Jessica Rhodes TrainerJessica began at NKU in 2008 as a Graduate Assistant athletic trainer. She is currently an Assistant

Athletic Trainer that works primarily with the Men’s Soccer and Women’s Basketball teams. She was part of the training staff during the 2010 National Championship season.

Jessica graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2008 earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training. She completed her internship with the Lakers, working with the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams. In 2010, she completed her Master’s in Education in Sports Administration at Xavier University. She completed her Master’s in Arts in Integrated Studies at Northern Kentucky University in 2012.

She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Southeast Athletic Trainers’ Association, and the Kentucky Athletic Trainers’ Society.Jessica currently resides in Cold Spring, KY.

If you think soccer is a game for wimps, you haven’t met John Basalyga.

The Queens, N.Y.-born hockey defenseman and baseball catcher - who is now coach of the No.1-ranked Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team - began his coaching career in football, at Greenhills High School.

He’s never let a lack of organized playing experience in a sport keep him from coaching it, though.

He played only a year of soccer, as a goalie. His organized football-playing experience? One year playing quarterback in high school.

But Basalyga has been playing - and coaching - sports for as long as he can remember. In New York City, he and a fellow 13-year-old co-founded, co-financed (with fundraisers) and co-coached their neighborhood roller hockey team.

“We were like the Young Rascals,” said Basalyga, a 1973 graduate of Bowling Green University. “In our neighborhood, we had teams in all sports - but hockey was the most fun. Before the season started, we walked into a group of adults holding a hockey meeting and they said, ‘Whaddaya want?’ We said, ‘We’re here to play hockey.’ They couldn’t believe it. But we ran the whole operation.”

Roller hockey?

“Yeah, it’s basically hockey for guys that can’t ice-skate,” he said.

Basalyga’s NKU soccer team is 22-1 and hosts Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) in the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals at 1 p.m. today at Town & Country Sports Complex in Wilder.

At stake is a berth in the NCAA Division II Final Four at Orange Beach,

Ala., Nov 30-Dec. 2.

Basalyga emphasizes a defense-rich philosophy that was forged on the mean streets of New York and refined in his college-playing days in baseball and hockey at Bowling Green.

“There were only two or three ice rinks in New York City when I was growing up in the early ‘60s,” he said. “So we all played roller hockey. If you couldn’t fight, you couldn’t play. That was the only difference between ice hockey and roller hockey - we fought more.”

So excuse “Coach Bass” if he doesn’t buy your characterization of soccer as a game for Slush Puppie-eating wimps who are chauffeured to and from practice by suburban moms in their mini-vans.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But it’s not what Basalyga’s players at NKU are about - not now, anyway.

“I’ve got a problem with your coaching style,” an NKU player told him during Basalyga’s rookie season at NKU five years ago.

Uh-oh. Not a good move.

“Coach Bass” responded by telling the fellow what he thought of somebody having such a soft upbringing in the sport that it would inspire whining to the coach.

Needless to say, the complainant isn’t among the seniors who have survived Basalyga’s “problematic” coaching style, which led NKU to its first-ever NCAA men’s soccer tournament last year and to the top of the rankings this year. His five-year mark is 65-27-10.

At Turpin High School, Coach Bass won three state soccer championships. His teams have won three times as many games as they lost in his 24 years.

But why soccer? After all, Basalyga’s career sum total of soccer-playing experience was only that one season of goalkeeping at BG, which he did just to stay in shape for baseball and hockey.

Yes, why soccer, indeed?

Simple: Hockey in high school wasn’t widely available in Cincinnati back in the 1970s and 1980s.

“But, believe me, there are more similarities between hockey and soccer than I could have imagined,” Basalyga said.

You better believe Basalyga has told his NKU soccer players that. Oh, has he told them.

“And he’s right - I’d say 60 percent to 70 percent of soccer is just like hockey,” said Dan Impellizzeri, a former multi-sport star at Anderson High who typifies Basalyga’s defense-first approach.


John Basalyga“He’s the only coach who actively recruited me (for college soccer),” Impellizzeri said.

“He knew I could do it, because he had a (multi-sport) background.”

Many of Basalyga’s players are from local high schools, so most of the upperclassmen at least knew of his hard-nosed reputation.

But Steven Beattie, a freshman from Dublin, Ireland, who didn’t know a puck from a potato, had a lot of learning to do when he arrived in Highland Heights.

“Coach gave me a DVD of ‘Miracle,’” the 2004 movie about the U.S Olympic hockey team’s shocking upset of the Soviets en route to the gold medal at Lake Placid in 1980,” said Beattie.

“After watching the movie, I understand Coach Bass a little better,” he said. “But it’s a good thing he and Kevin McCloskey (the Belfast-born pro with the Cincinnati Kings) were straight up with me when I was being recruited. They told me about all the running we’d be doing (at NKU). If they hadn’t, I guarantee you I’d have been on the first plane back home once I saw it.

“I can hardly believe he’s never played soccer. He’s one of the best coaches I’ve ever had. And in Ireland, all of our coaches have played at a very high level.”

Basalyga manages to keep tensions from boiling over. He has funny quips and valuable lessons from

other sports that usually fit - but sometimes leave players scratching their heads.

“He uses baseball analogies a lot,” said Impellizzeri, “but sometimes it’s a stretch. We’re pretty close to blowing it off when it comes to his baseball stories. He’s always bringing up the Yankees. That’s OK, though, because they haven’t won it all in awhile. We give him a rough time about that.”

Basalyga always gets his way. Early in practice he lines up his players for sprints so they’ll be tired when scrimmaging begins - which is the way they’ll feel during games.

How tough is Basalyga?

To appreciate his conditioning program, one must cue up the scene in “Miracle” where the U.S. hockey team has just skated to a disappointing tie on the road in preparation for the Olympics.

If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll remember one word - “Again” - because of the number of times Coach Herb Brooks uses it as a signal for his assistant to blow the whistle to begin the team’s gassers - short line-to-line sprints that build in length.

Again.

Again.

Again.

“Soon as I saw that scene,” said Beattie, “I went, aha! There it is. There’s Coach Basalyga. That’s NKU soccer.”

The freshmen at Lincoln Memorial will learn about it today.


NKU Soccer Stadium

The primary mission of NKU’s intercollegiate athletics program is to provide a natural extension of secondary school programs, offering skilled student-athletes the opportunity to continue their educational and athletic experiences beyond high school. Though NKU’s athletic teams continue to post impressive achievements in the classroom and in athletic competitions, its facilities do not match the same standards of quality.

To position the university at the top of NCAA Division II, NKU has begun to implement a plan to improve and build intercollegiate athletics facilities.

The first phase of the plan was completed in the Spring of 2007 when the Joyce Yeager Tennis Complex opened, bringing the NKU men’s and women’s tennis teams back on campus and providing the campus community with a first-class outdoor tennis facility.

On November 8, 2008, the NKU men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the University of Louisville to open The Bank of Kentucky Center, a $68.5 million, 9,200-seat multipurpose facility that will serve the NKU athletics teams as well as the surrounding community.

The next phase of the plan is now underway, as NKU opens the $6.5 million NKU Soccer Stadium adjacent to The Bank of Kentucky

Center, ending a 10-year period of Norse soccer playing off-campus in Wilder, Ky.

The facility includes seating for 1,000 spectators and an artificial playing surface with World Cup dimensions (120 yards by 80 yards). Other amenities include concessions and restroom facilities, three team locker rooms, a press box and media work area, full athletic training facilities, laundry and equipment storage, and coaches’ offices.

Also included in the stadium is the Founders’ Room, a VIP suite and meeting area directly over midfield that offers a great place for meetings and get-togethers on game days or anytime. The enclosed room includes an outdoor patio with excellent sightlines to the action on the field.

Construction on the new NKU soccer stadium began in Fall 2008 and the NKU soccer programs took

occupancy in the building in early July. The Norse soccer teams played the first games on the new field during the 2009

season against Missouri-St. Louis.

The NKU Soccer Stadium officially opened on Sept. 3, 2010, as the Norse defeated Findlay by a 4-0 score. The Norse complied a 14-1 record in their first full season at the new facility, including hosting Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA postseason contests.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One game farther.

That has been the mission of the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team since reaching the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history back in 2006.

Two years ago, the dream ended at this point. A talented Dowling (N.Y.) squad took an overtime win and ended NKU’s climb just short of the summit.

Not this year.

On the back of a two-goal performance from senior captain Steven Beattie, the Norse earned a 4-1 victory over the Golden Lions and will play for the team’s fi rst ever national championship this Saturday. NKU will take on Rollins in the championship fi nal

at 3 p.m.

It is a journey that began eight years ago for head coach John Basalyga, who watched that 2003 squad win just four games and miss the conference tournament. On Thursday, he watched the Norse improve to 19-2-3 on the season with one game to go.

The Norse offense came out on fi re in the fi rst half, scoring two goals in the fi rst 10 minutes. All-America defender Paul Andrews got NKU on the board just 75 seconds into the game, fl icking on a header shot past Dowling goalkeeper Chris Kucera for his third goal of the season. Anthony Meyer got the assist on the goal, which ignited the heavily partisan Norse crowd at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

“I was just trying to throw it at the goalkeeper and make him have to make a decision on whether to play it or not,” said Meyer, who picked up his fi fth assist of the season and his second in as many games. ”He just ended up missing it and we headed it into the goal.”

“It’s always important to score fi rst, especially against a team like Dowling,” added Beattie. “Experience is on their side. They’re a former national champion and have been to this level several times.”

The Ron Lenz National Player of the Year could not be denied forever, as Beattie added a tally of his own in the 10th minute after Andrew Montgomery created a turnover and fed a long through ball to Beattie, who fi rst beat defender Stefan Draskovic and then Kucera on the left post to extend the lead to 2-0.

“We were 50-50 on the ball, and [Draskovic] was much bigger than me,” said Beattie of the eventual game winner. “I just got my body in between him

and the ball, got shoulder in there and got a shot off.

“To be honest, I thought he had the ball and was going to hook it away, but somehow it found my feet and I put it away. It was an absolute delight.”

Beattie added another goal in the 39th minute off a direct free kick from 20 yards out for his 26th goal of the year, putting him just one behind the nation’s leading scorer.

It took just 50 seconds for Dowling to answer and get themselves on the board. After a strong corner kick was headed off the crossbar by an NKU defender, an all-out scramble in the penalty area put the ball at the feet of Sulemana Ali, who knocked in his third goal of the year to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Norse made their adjustments in the second half, however, and shut down any hopes of a Dowling comeback.

“We played better in the second half than we did in the fi rst,” said Basalyga, who enjoyed his 115th coaching victory. “We were able to fi gure out what they were doing and make the adjustments.”

The Norse boss gave a lot of credit for the defensive shutdown to the young Norse midfi eld, including Michael Bartlett, Nicholas Chiarot and Jordan Kotsopolous.

“The composure that those three kids had on a stage like this was unbelievable,” said Basalyga. “They neutralized the opposing midfi eld for the most part and took away some of their options.

“They’re not the most technical players, but they’re like puppy dogs that just bug you all day long. They’re little gnats.”

With time running short, freshman Michael Holder put the icing on the cake with his 14th goal of the season on a takeaway deep in Dowling territory.

Michael Lavric was hardly tested in the game, seeing just fi ve shots and making one save in the victory.

Though it may have seemed one-sided, Basalyga was quick to praise the opposition, “This is a very talented team with a great pedigree. We’re very humbled to be able to play at the level that they play. It was a great game.”

Meyer was happy to have banished the ghost of 2008’s semifi nal defeat, “I still remember that game two years ago, and the way the boys came out today and fought hard and the confi dence we had made it that much sweeter.”

So now the Tars of Rollins await, the one game farther, the chance at a national championship.

Saturday’s title clash will be the seventh time a Norse team has played for a national championship. The men’s basketball team played in back-to-back national title games in 1996 and 1997. The women’s soccer team was defeated by UC-San Diego in the 2000 national championship game, while the women’s basketball team captured national titles in 2000 and 2008 while falling short in the 2003 championship game.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The storybook could not have had a more dramatic, or sweeter, ending.

In the driving snow, in front of hundreds of faithful fans, the Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team accomplished a feat that no men’s team at NKU ever has, winning the NCAA Division II national championship with a 3-2 victory over Rollins College.

NKU finishes the season with a 20-2-3 record.

Jack Little got the crowd roaring a little over nine minutes into the contest, just flicking a free-kick opportunity from Paul Andrews past the outstretched hands of Tar goalkeeper Keneil Baker for his third goal of the season.

NKU senior Steven Beattie was held in check for the better part of the game. One of his best chances of the game came early on a ball played back to Baker. Beattie looked to slide in and steal a goal, but the Rollins goalkeeper was able to lift the ball with his boot and prevent the Irishman from sliding in for the marker.

“I couldn’t seem to find my touch,” said Beattie, who was named the Ron Lenz National Player of the Year earlier this week. “As an Irishman, I’m not used to the snow, so that’s my excuse.

“[Rollins] said in the paper that they’ve never seen the snow, so we tried to use that in our favor.”

It appeared to be a deciding factor in NKU’s second goal, this time from sophomore Jordan Grant, who extended the Norse lead in the 33rd minute.

Michael Bartlett came crashing into the penalty area with a chance just six yards out, but his shot was deflected wide. Grant came in with a desperation touch to sneak the ball inside the right post for his third goal of the season, but none more important.

The Norse appeared to be in good shape, entering the halftime intermission with a 2-0 lead. But the Tars were not down yet.

“The first 15 minutes of the second half we knew [Rollins] was going to come out strong,” said NKU head coach John Basalyga of the tenacious opponents.

Disaster appeared to strike for the Norse in the second half as Adam New headed down a corner kick from Kevin Boone and beat NKU goalkeeper Michael Lavric on a bounce.

Three minutes later, off another set piece opportunity for the Tars, an attempted clearance by Andrews in the box came off the head of Rollins’ Jack Clifford and into the twine for the equalizer.

“You have a two-goal lead and with the snap of a finger, in two minutes, it’s all wiped away,” said the senior Lavric, who made nine saves in the victory. “It feels like the game is starting to slip away from you.”

Two of those saves came just five minutes later, as Bradley Welch came in with a long shot from the right side that Lavric turned away, but sent the rebound toward the top of the 18-yard-box. Rollins midfielder Andreas Mayer came hard with a low shot back in, but Lavric also turned the rebound away and kept the Norse level.


2010 In-ReviewNKU turned it around in the 65th minute, starting on an offensive fl urry that saw Beattie take his only shot of the game, which was blocked eight yards out by the Rollins back line. However, NKU continued to press the attack, with Anthony Meyer picking up the loose ball and dribbling forward.

Meyer sent a seeking cross into the box, and found the head of freshman Michael Holder, who gave his best effort.

“I was just trying to make contact and get it on goal,” said Holder of the quick shot.

The result just popped off the hands of the Rollins goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give Holder his 15th goal of the season and the Norse the lead.

“It was a typical Northern Kentucky game,” said Basalyga. “Give up a couple of goals and fi gure out a way to score a game-winner. We’ve been doing that all year long.”

Rollins continued to pour in shots in the fi nal 25 minutes of the contest, but Lavric stood tall with four big saves late in the game.

“Everything just happened so fast, it’s just reaction,” said Lavric. “[Coach] reminded me, just keep your body behind the ball and keep it out of the back of the net. It may not be pretty, but as long as it stayed out I guess I did my job.”

“It was absolutely amazing coming here and having a 12th man,” added Beattie, who credited the NKU faithful in the stands for the lift the defense needed late. “The last 15 minutes, with our backs against the wall, that noise from the fans really pulled us through.”

Another turning point for the Norse came in the 85th minute when Nicholas Chiarot took a hard foul from Jack Clifford while going after a ball down the sideline. Clifford, who was already shown a yellow card earlier in the half, saw his second booking and was sent off, forcing the Tars to try and catch up while playing a man down.

NKU was able to control play from there, keeping the ball in the offensive half for the remainder of the contest and taking the hard-fought victory.

“We’re not the prettiest team in the world,” added Basalyga. “(Rollins) were very technical, very big, in some cases more skilled than we are. But the way we train and what we do and how we do it, it’s that ‘gut’ thing we have.

“I’d rather win ugly than lose good.”

Basalyga was the fi rst coach to get NKU into the NCAA Tournament, qualifying for the fi rst time in 2006. The Norse proceeded to win the next three Midwest Regional championships, advancing to the

national semifi nals in 2008.

However, it was the following season, in which NKU was eliminated in the fi rst round of the postseason, that Basalyga feels motivated this team above all.

“How many people get upset after going 15-6? These kids were upset,” said Basalyga, “They practiced on their own for two weeks before the season started to get them ready for me. It’s a tribute to these kids and what they’ve done.”

Beattie, whose storied career at NKU ended in the most magnifi cent way, sees this as just the beginning for a young and talented team that will return with the same fi re next year.

“I was the fi rst international player brought in, and back then Coach told me that this program was on the rise,” said Beattie. “And I leave with a semifi nal and a national championship. It’s a credit to everyone associated with the program. We worked hard, we’ve got our new facility, and we’re still on the rise.”
