Pitta was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round. BYU’s athletic director, Tom Holmoe was selected in the fourth round of the 1983 NFL Draft as a defensive back by the San Francisco 49ers. Holmoe went on to win four Super Bowls with San Francisco, three as a player and one as a coach. There have been 21 defensive lineman from BYU drafted since 1972, including two in the first round of 1987. Defensive tackle Shawn Knight was taken 11th over- all by the New Orleans Saints and defensive end Jason Buck was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 17th overall pick. The last defensive lineman from BYU selected in the NFL Draft was Shaun Nua in the fifth round in 2005 of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nua helped Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl victory as a rookie and went on to work as a graduate assistant at BYU and is now an assistant coach at Navy. BYU has had seven players draft- ed, including one supplemental pick, since Bronco Mendenhall has become the head coach in 2005, the highest being quarterback John Beck, going in the 2007 sec- ond round (40th overall) to the Miami Dophins. In addition, 30 former play- ers under Mendenhall have signed free agent contracts to play in the NFL. Since 1973 NFL season, BYU has had 248 play- ers sign contracts with NFL teams, including 101 NFL Draft picks. The average player coming from BYU spends nearly four and a half years in the NFL, about one year longer than the average NFL career. At the time of his retirement, his 51,979 punting yards were the third most in NFL history. Forty players from BYU have played in the Super Bowl, bringing home 39 total champion- ship rings.
