BYU DRAFT NOTES• BYU has had 101 players since

1973 selected in the NFL Draft and three more selected in the NFL Supplemental Draft (QB Steve Young, 1984, 1st/1st overall, TE Gordon Hudson, 1984, 1st/22nd overall, RB Harvey Unga, 2010, 7th Round)

• Super Bowl winner tight end Dennis Pitta is the last Cougar to be drafted, going 114th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. Pitta was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round.

• BYU’s athletic director, Tom Holmoe was selected in the fourth round of the 1983 NFL Draft as a defensive back by the San Francisco 49ers. Holmoe went on to win four Super Bowls with San Francisco, three as a player and one as a coach.

• There have been 21 defensive lineman from BYU drafted since 1972, including two in the first round of 1987. Defensive tackle Shawn Knight was taken 11th over-all by the New Orleans Saints and defensive end Jason Buck was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals with the 17th overall pick.

• The last defensive lineman from BYU selected in the NFL Draft was Shaun Nua in the fifth round in 2005 of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Nua helped Pittsburgh to a Super Bowl victory as a rookie and went on to work as a graduate assistant at BYU and is now an assistant coach at Navy.

• BYU has had seven players draft-ed, including one supplemental pick, since Bronco Mendenhall has become the head coach in 2005, the highest being quarterback John Beck, going in the 2007 sec-ond round (40th overall) to the Miami Dophins. In addition, 30 former play-ers under Mendenhall have signed free agent contracts to play in the NFL.

Since 1973 NFL season, BYU has had 248 play-ers sign contracts with NFL teams, including 101 NFL Draft picks. BYU has had eight NFL Draft first round picks and two NFL Supplemental Draft first rounders.The most recent first-round pick out of BYU is linebacker and former gradu-ate assistant Rob Morris in 2000.

The average player coming from BYU spends nearly four and a half years in the NFL, about one year longer than the average NFL career.

Punter Lee Johnson has had the longest NFL career to date, spanning 18 seasons with six different teams. Johnson was drafted in the fifth round to the Houston Oilers (1985-87). He went on to play for the Cleveland Browns (1987–1988), Cincinnati Bengals (1988–1998), New England Patriots (1999–2001), Minnesota Vikings (2001) and Philadelphia Eagles (2002). At the time of his retirement, his 51,979 punting yards were the third most in NFL history.

Forty players from BYU have played in the Super Bowl, bringing home 39 total champion-

ship rings. Tight end Dennis Pitta just helped the Baltimore Ravens win the Super Bowl last season. Former defensive back and current Athletic Director Tom Holmoe has the most with four rings, including three as a player and one as a coach, all with the 49ers. From 1980-1992 the Cougars had at least one representive in the Super Bowl each year.

Pittsburgh Steelers Brett Keisel is the longest tenured active NFL player from BYU, heading into his 12th year. Keisel was drafted in the 7th round by the Steelers in 2002.

Steve Young is arguably BYU's best known NFL player, spending 15 seasons in the league, 13 with the 49ers. Young led San Francisco to a 49-26 win in Super Bowl XXIX over the Chargers with a Super Bowl record six touchdown pass-es, winning the game's MVP award. He was also the league's MVP for the '94 season with 3,969 passing yards, 35 touchdowns and an NFL-record 112.8 passer rating.

5 The highest overall pick for a BYU Cougar in the NFL Draft. Quarterback Jim McMahon was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 1982 draft. McMahon went on to lead the Bears to a 46-10 victory over New England in Super Bowl XX.

8 BYU has had eight players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft. The eight include McMahon, along with defensive tackle Shawn Knight (1987, 11th overall), offensive lineman John Tait (1999, 14th overall), quarterback Marc Wilson (1980, 15th overall), defensive end Jason Buck (1987, 17th overall), linebacker Todd Shell (1984, 24th overall), offensive lineman Trevor Matich (1985, 28th overall) and linebacker Rob Morris (2000, 28th overall).
