I’d like to begin this month’s arti- cle with lots of thank yous for some wonderful ministries we had here at St. Paul during December:

First, thank you to Nancy Hazen, Vicki Marien, and everyone who helped make the Advent Faire hap- pen this year. Families made some wonderful crafts, and also made adorable mouse ornaments for our shut-ins. Everyone I talked to had

a great time, and I thought the crafts turned out won- derfully.

Thank you also to Rita and all of the preschool staff for the wonderful Christmas program they gave us on December 13th. The kids were dressed in their Christmas finest, the sanctuary was packed, and the program was so much fun! It was a delight to watch the talents and excitement of our preschoolers. We had a great time of fellowship afterward in Morton Hall as well, and families were able to have fellow- ship while the children got to spend time with Santa!

Thank you to Monica and all of the children who participated in this year’s Christmas Pageant on De- cember 16th! It was wonderful to see the story of Jesus’ birth through them. Everyone worked really hard, and we are grateful for the faithfulness and dedication that brought us this ministry!

Finally, thank you to everyone who participated in all of the Christmas worship services. It takes a lot of people to fill a lot of spots for that many services, and we all definitely appreciate everyone who helped in so many ways. A special thank you to everyone who provided music for those services; what wonderful gifts you gave to us.

And now for January:

We are having an Epiphany party! Join us between services on January 6th between services for an int- ergenerational celebration. Epiphany is 12 days af- ter Christmas and marks the day traditionally associ- ated with the wise men coming to see the baby Je- sus. The wise men followed a star to find the Mes- siah so Epiphany is a season of light. It is especially

appropriate this time of year as we experience more darkness due to the winter season. Christ brings light to our darkness and love and hope to our lives. We will be blessing chalk for the children to use to bless the doors of both home and church, as is tradi- tional on Epiphany.

The Education Board is planning their 2nd Annual Winter Carnival on January 27th during education hour. Children Preschool-5th grade are invited to come and celebrate Winter with us. We will play games, do crafts, have special snacks, and hopefully have a really great time together.

The ACG Club will have its monthly meeting on Friday, January 17th. Children in grades 3-5 are in- vited to join us, and friends are always welcome!

Looking forward to February:

The Elementary Retreat is coming up! The event is the weekend of February 22nd at Mount Cross and is open to 3-5th graders. We would love for St. Paul to be represented by a good sized group. This year’s retreat is called Faith Quest: Journey Through the Kingdom of God. Please see the bottom of this arti- cle for a description of the event. We would love to take a group to this retreat, so please consider sign- ing up. Friends are also welcome to come with the children. We will also need adult chaperons to join us, so please consider volunteering!

Education Board is also planning a Family Skating event for February 16th. Please watch for more in- formation, and plan on joining us for this fun day!

FAITH QUEST - Elementary RetreatJourney Through the Kingdom of GodCalling all Kings and Queens; all Princes and Prin-cesses; all Squires, Jesters, and Knights to the Epic Quest of the century! Come and together we will journey through the Kingdom of God in this realm. There will be intrigue, adventures, and great tales will be told of our travels! Medieval & fantasy cos- tume is encouraged.

THE SAINTINEL Page 3From Social Ministry: The Board wants to give a warm thanks to all of you who rang bells for Salvation Army this year. I spoke with a couple of paid ringers when we could not fill the day with our own ring-ers. Their stories of how the Salvation Army had saved their lives fills one with awe. They are so thankful to the Army for assisting them to change their lives but even more so for a place that let them find their faith in God. Salvation reaches people that the mainline churches does not. It is important to re- member that our small effort brings in the quarters and dollar bills that otherwise would not reach Salva- tion. I ask you to look forward to ringing nextyear. It is a blessing both to provide the opportunity for others to donate but also to interact with so many givers in just a couple of hours. A special thanks to the Board who worked behind the scenes is "encouraging" people to sign up, making phone calls to fill slots or taking the slot themselves--Bonnie Kie-drowski, Lee and Ruth Ann Eichele, Sharon Seegmil- ler and a special thanks to Dave Hinchman for taking the lead and coordinating the job with the Salvation Army.

We also had an opportunity to make a few children's Christmas a little happier, and I am sure their parents appreciated it too, by filling Angel Tree requests. Thank you to all who filled one of the tags.

Blessed Christmas Season to all.

ITS CHRISTMAS WHY DO I FEEL SAD?

Christmas means many different things to differentpeople. At times, within the same person, holidays can change how we feel depending on our circum- stances. We all know that holidays can bring with them increased activity and stress. We have different expectations that may or may not be realistic. We live in a society that tells us we need to this or we need to do that. It is a time where there are many different kinds of pressure put on us re: entertaining, cooking, baking decorating shopping etc. All of these things take energy and financial security and if we do not have them, we begin to feel sad, anxious, depressed and generally overwhelmed. It may also be a time when we have lived through a loss. These can range from a death of a loved one to loss of job security, changes in life style etc. All loss tends to bring withit, feelings of sadness due to wishes not being ful- filled, to remembrances as to how it was last year etc.

I want to talk to you in this article, tips for dealing with a loss of a loved one. Many of us have had this experience and do not remember it as a happytime. Life felt empty, meaningless etc. You don't want to spend the season wrapped in gloom, yet you know grief needs to be expressed, not repressed. There are things that you can do to help minimize it and still meet that need. Write a Christmas journal or letter to your loved one. What you write is between you and your loved one. Recall joys you shared and trials you went through together. Remember it is OKto feel happiness and joy too, at Christmas-right in the middle of your grief. Your loved one would want you to feel merry.

Let others help you to keep in touch with yourself. When help is offered, accept it. We sometimes find ourselves on auto-pilot and just routinely reply, "Oh, I am fine." Give the question honest considera-tion. Our family and friends can be so important at this time.

Some people find that honoring their loved one in some way helps them. Some examples could in- clude, making ornaments that symbolically represent your loved one, and give them to family and good friends. Hang a holiday welcome wreath on your

front door. The circle is a strong symbol of life; we often hear the "circle of love". Send thank you notes to those who were special to your loved one.

At Christmas we celebrate the coming of Godand honoring our loved ones at this time helps to keep them in our hearts. Advent and Christmas aretimes of hope, anticipation and remembering. This is the time to remember and hold on to the promise.

Wishing my St. Paul family God's blessings. MarilynYour Parish Nurse

Monica’s MusingsToday is 12-12-12, the day the world is supposed to end (just kidding) and there are so many reasons to give thanks. This year brought me and my family many challenges, and yet through all of these my church family (again) surrounded us with prayer and love.

As many of you know, Mark and I have been sepa- rated (and now almost divorced) since April 2010, which has been a smooth and loving experience, be- lieve it or not. But, in spite of how well we get along, divorce is complicated. I am grateful for my St Paul family and for the love you have shown to both Mark and I during this transition in our lives.

Also, in November Mark was admitted to the hospital with an internal abdominal abscess (staff infection) that he is still in the process of healing from. He is preparing to return to his teaching position on the 17th of December and is grateful for a return to normalcy. So many have prayed for his recovery and have of- fered assistance during his convalescence – many thanks to all of you for your concern and support. Huge thanks go to Marilyn Maki for assisting with Mark’s recovery, and to Dwight Holmquist for step- ping in to direct the Chancel Choir while Mark was out.

As I think about all of the blessings in my life, I would like to thank the many people that keep the Worship and Music programs functioning. There are many of you, and I pray that I don’t miss anyone (please forgive me if I do):♣ The St Paul Program Staff, Pastor Mark, Pastor

Sarah, Rita Spohn, Chris Olson, Leslie Phillips, Sondra Aman, Marilyn Maki, who are a wonderfulteam of people to work with and for.

♣ Mark Swope and Dwight Holmquist, who direct our choirs with enthusiasm, and step in to sing ordirect when needed.

♣ Audrey Churchill, who keeps the music library, the choirs and me organized, and helps me staysane.

♣ Erik Edwards and Anthony Campolo, who play drums and bass at our 10:30 worship and help

keep the music lively.♣ Monte & Sue Hummel, who lead the Pre-K Choir

every week and provide music for Preschool Wor-ship each Wednesday.

♣ Tapestry, who provides wonderful music for wor-ship, fundraisers, funerals and weddings.

♣ Marlene and Ray Peterson (along with many other volunteers) who put lots of time and creative en- ergy into decorating the sanctuary throughout theyear.

♣ The Board of Worship and Music (Leanne Bas- den, Audrey Churchill, Marlene Peterson, Brad Jacka, Diane Swofford, Gerry Metzger, Ray Abi- nanti, and Mary Lassanske, who work on all of the invisible (and not so invisible) details of Worshipand Music at St Paul.

As 2013 approaches I find myself looking forward to new beginnings, expressing more gratitude for the blessings already in my life, and more awareness of God’s angels on earth (so many of whom are at St Paul). Thank you for being those angels in my life and for increasing my awareness of God’s love for all of us.

I hope you all have a blessed Christmas and NewYear!

Pax, Monica

The family of Werner Tiede would like to extend its sin- cerest appreciation to all in the St. Paul’s congregation for your comfort, hospitality and service during our time of mourning. Your kind

words and selfless deeds reminded us that we are not only heirs to an eternity with Jesus, but constantly re- ceive His blessings in communing with His body of believers during our trials here on earth. You made December 15, 2012 a beautiful day of remembrance and wonderful refreshment for us all.
