2013 PREVIEW

The University of New Haven women’s team returns 14 student-athletes who saw action in 2012 with hopes of mak-ingitsfifthstraightpostseasonappearanceandsecondNCAApostseason trip. New Haven posted a 13-5 record last season and advanced to a program-record fourth straight North-east-10 Conference Championship. The Chargers went 8-4 in conferenceplaytoearnthefifthseedandfellatnationally-rankedNo.9Bentleyinthequarterfinals.UNHconcludedtheseason ranked No. 8 in the IWLCA Division II poll after being ranked as high as No. 6 during the regular season.

AttackDespite losing two of the program’s top attackers to gradu-ation, experience will be no stranger to the UNH front line. Senior Natalie Lieberman, the top returning scorer, will anchor the attack. In 2012, she scored 31 goals, dished out 11 as-sists and played in all 18 games. She will also take a majority of the draws this season after grabbing 28 draw controls from the center circle last year.

The junior tandem of Nicole McKee and Marissa Fisher will also be keys to the Chargers’ offense in 2013. The two com-bined for 42 goals and six assists last year. McKee started all 18 games and will be looked to for more scoring this season. Although she may not show up at the top of the stat sheet, Fisher brings two years of solid experience and will likely be a leader on the offensive end.

Sophomore Ashley Travis, who saw action in nine games last season, will see an increased role after netting two goals dur-ing her rookie season.

A trio of newcomers is expected to make an immediate impact for the attack - Maya Szymanski, Courtney Ackland and Devon Previte. A Bay State All-Star and member of a State Champion-

ship Team, Symanski has transitioned well to the speed of the college game. Ackland, from Perth, Western Australia, brings extensive experience at the international level as a member of the Aussie U19 lacrosse team and possesses great vision and stick abilities. A Toms River, N.J. native, Previte was named to theOceanCountyAll-Starteamasaseniorandfinishedhercareer with 80 goals and 38 assists.

MidfieldFollowing the loss of the program’s all-time leading scorer, AshleyFerrandiz, theChargers’midfieldwilllooktoaskilledsenior and talented sophomore to transition the ball from defense to offense. Kristina Curry, a co-captain, started all 18 games in 2012 and scored 35 points (32g, 3a). She enters her senior campaign after playing in 52 career games and scoring 83 points. Sophomore Kathryn Campbell will play a large part in both scoring and defending as well. As a rookie, she started all 18 games and was fourth on the team with 42 points (30g, 12a). Curry and Campbell combined for 52 groundballs, 48 draw controls and 26 caused turnovers last season.

Addingtothemidfieldwillbeapairofnewcomers,AliciaBusco and Corinne Fisher. A two-time All-League honoree, Busco attended Agawam High School in Mass. Sister of junior Marissa, Corinne Fisher scored 121 goals as a Second Team All-Shore selection at Jackson Memorial High School in N.J.

DefensePossiblythemostexperienceportionofthefieldfortheChar-gers is their back line. New Haven returns seven defenders who saw action in 2012, including two of the team’s senior co-captains – Rachel Resnick and Kerri Foley. A three-year starter from Ocean, N.J., Resnick will anchor the defense. She started 17 games last season and played in all 52 games over

Junior Melissa Gaetano has returned to full strength and willseesignificanttimethisseasonafterseeinglimitedtimelast year due to an injury. Sophomore Brittany Ast’s role is expected to expand in 2013 after playing in 14 games as a freshman.

Four other returners will also be looked to for support on defense. Junior Rachael Whitman appeared in nine games last season, while sophomores Samantha Clyne and Daina Catanese combined for 20 appearances last year. Catanese made the move from the front line to the back line and will add quickness and athleticism to the position.

Freshmen Maria Troisi, Sky Mahoney-Kendra and Christina Luca will provide depth at the defensive end. Troisi was a two-sport athlete at Commack High School in East Northport, N.Y., while Mahoney-Kendra was a four-year starter and two-year captain at Saint John Vianney in N.J. Luca was named a scholar-athlete and was a three-sport athlete at Plainedge in Farmingdale, N.Y.

GoalkeeperThe program’s all-time leader between the pipes, Maureen Spellman, also graduated in the offseason. The absence in netwillbethefirstinfouryearsfortheChargersandthreestudent-athletes are expected to battle for the starting spot. Sophomore Sharon Strain is joined by freshmen Alyssa Gianotti and Marissa McDermott.

Strain saw limited time in three games last season, while Gianotti and McDermott were award winners during their scholastic careers. Gianotti was a First Team All-Baltimore

Metro winner as well and a county champion in high school. McDermott was an All-Star at Wilbraham & Monson Academy in Longmeadow, Mass.

ScheduleThe season begins with a pair of home matchups on Thurs-day, March 7 at Kayo Field against Molloy and March 9 against Dowling. On March 13, the Chargers will travel to LIU Post to take on the defending Division II national champions. Last season, the Chargers defeated the then-No. 3 Pioneers, 18-17, in overtime at Kayo Field - one of four wins for UNH over a nationally-ranked foe in 2012.

The Chargers will then head down to Arnold, Md. to play two neutral-site matches against Pfeiffer and Queens (N.C.) before coming back north to open up Northeast-10 play. The squad’s NE-10 slate will take place on March 23 at Stonehill.

The Chargers will then return home for three straight confer-ence matchups against Southern Connecticut State (March 26),Bentley(March30)andoneoflastyear’snationalsemifi-nalists, Le Moyne (April 3).

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The NE-10 consists of 16 member institutions that are located throughout the Northeast including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American InternationalCollege (Springfield,Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), University of Massachusetts Lowell (Lowell, Mass.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The 16 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, New York to Boston, Massachusetts and from Burlington, Vermont to Long Island, New York. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, New Haven, Worcester, and New York.

The Conference most recently welcomed the University of New Haven in 2008 and Adelphi University in 2009, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the educationonandoffthefieldofitsmorethan5,500 student athletes.

Counted among the many accomplishments of our institutions are NCAA Division II National Championshipsinwomen’sbasketball, fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse,

This past year, 47 teams representing the Northeast-10 saw their name on NCAA selection days as Division II national championshipfieldswereannounced. The47 teams represented fourteen different institutions.

The Saint Rose women’s soccer team also claimed its first national championship in2011.

Fromthefieldofplaytotheclassroom,theNortheast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. The conference honored close to 200 student-athletes throughout the year that excelled at ahighlevelonthefieldandintheclassroomas members of the academic all conference teams. Additionally, 2,917 student-athletes representing each of the sixteen schools earned a 3.0 GPA or higher and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll last year.

Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused on complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions with a commitment to a broad-based championship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports the Conference offers in championship play, the most of any Division II conference.

UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In thepast fiveyears alone, enrollment has grown by 34 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 59 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $100 million in construction projects and has launched 15 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction, publishedbytheUniversityof

South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and film form (hewas associate producerof thefilm),and isPresidentof theOskarSchindlerHumanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation.

Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of

Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and findUNHanewathletics conference that bestfits the institution’s long-termacademicandathleticaspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-yearhiatus, theChargerfootball team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advancedtotheNCAAQuarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted

October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was atthattimeonlythefifthDivisionIIcoachtowin500career matches.
