Zorn Park: Harbor Springs’ in-town park, next to the marina, is a favorite for families. The beach has lifeguards, a swim-ming raft, and a sandy-bottom swim area where you can take a dip in the clean, cold, spring-fed waters of this natural harbor on Little Traverse Bay. The grassy knoll along the beach is perfect for rolling out a blanket and enjoying a take-out lunch from one of the eateries just a couple blocks away. 231.526.7999, HARBORSPRINGSCHAMBER.COM.

Thorne Swift Nature Preserve: This sweet Lake Michigan beach is a bit of a secret, tucked away in a pretty 30-acre preserve near Harbor Springs. It’s just 300 feet of frontage, but on most days you’re likely to have it all to yourself. Bonus: There’s also 1.5 miles of easy hiking trails and boardwalks through dunes and cedar swamps, and an interpretive nature cen-ter the kids will adore. Peninsula Beach: A short walk from downtown Boyne City, this little public beach on Lake Charlevoix is primo for parking a lawn chair for an afternoon or bringing the family for a picnic. It’s actu-ally one of two Boyne City beaches; the other, Tannery Beach, is the perfect place to launch a canoe—and is also popular among dog lovers for letting the pooches jump in for a swim. Crooked Lake: This quiet, meander-ing inland lake northeast of Petoskey is part of the famous Inland Waterway—an interconnected series of rivers and lakes stretching from Petoskey to Cheboygan. On the lake’s western edge is the community of Conway, where the Township Park has a cute little beach for swimming and sunning, a bubbling artesian well, and a picnic-perfect grassy park. Beaches Petoskey State Park: This expansive beach on Little Traverse Bay is a slice of heaven smack between Harbor Springs and Petoskey, making it ideal for a swim after shopping in town. Play a game of volleyball in the sand courts, or take a short hike along the park’s trail system for the incredible views atop Old Baldy, a stable dune just behind the beach. 180 campsites. Nature Conservancy Hikesescape to the woods—or the meadows, wetlands, dunes, or shorelines—at one of the little traverse conservancy’s 164 nature preserves. the pre-serves range from pint-sized (like the less-than-half-acre shurtleff preserve in cross village, with amazing views of lake michigan) to big-time (such as the 750-acre sturgeon Bay dunes, a stunning spot to watch the sunset). all offer fantastic wildlife viewing, most have marked trails, and some are even open to kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, and other adventures. find a full guide with maps and descriptions of each preserve online. landtrust.org.

Little Traverse wheelway: This turn-of-the-centu-ry former railway, stretching more than 26 miles along the bay between Charlevoix and Harbor Springs, now serves as one of the region’s most scenic nonmotor-ized trails—a haven for recreational riders. The wide, paved pathway makes it especially friendly for families with small children. The “East Segment” in Petoskey is a lovely section; start at the Little Traverse History Museum, and continue northeast along Bayfront Park (note: a perfect picnic spot) and through the gorgeous Victorian-era community of Bay View. Boyne Highlands Resort: Hop the chairlift for a ride to the top of the mountain, where you’ll find a range of trails suited to all levels of riders. Cross-country mountain bikers can test their skills on scenic downhill runs; for experts, there’s the experts-only Bike Park, where obstacles like ramps and jumps will challenge even the most aggressive riders. wilderness state Park:This 10,000-acre park west of Mackinaw City has a vast network of trails, many of which are former two-tracks open to mountain biking. The terrain is mostly flat—great for beginner riders and those more interested in scenery than an adrenaline rush. Historic FortsFort Mackinac: A must-do on Mackinac Island, the 1780-built Fort Mackinac, perched high atop a limestone bluff, was a strategic outpost for British and U.S. armies for more than 115 years. Today, it’s one of the most scenic spots on the island—and a place where history comes alive daily. The parade grounds and historic buildings—some more than 225 years old—have been preserved as interactive exhibits, with costumed interpreters leading demonstrations to show what life was like within the fort for the soldiers and their families, who called this place home. Re-enactments include cannon salutes, rifle firing, bugle playing, medical treatments, children’s games, and even Victorian-era baseball.
