The “My Bibliography” feature of the Nataional Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ is now integrated with the eRA Commons for easy auto-uploading of citations into the NIH Research Perfor-mance Progress Reports (RPPR).

My NCBI is best accessed by logging in using your eRA Commons ID. Sign in “By email” and click “Continue.” Your My NCBI account will be created and linked automatically to your eRA Commons account.

If you already have a My NCBI account, you may have to link your eRA Commons account using “Login Account Options.” Click on “NIH & eRA Commons” and login using your eRA Commons username and password. You will be returned to the “Linked Accounts” page where it should indicate that your eRA Commons account is now linked to your My NCBI account.

A PMID number is a unique PubMed identifier assigned to each article as it is added to the PubMed database at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed. This number is displayed in the “sum-mary” format of the citation. The PMID number does not meet NIH compliance guidelines for public access. See: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/FAX.htm#c9.

W h A t i S A p M c i d n u M -b e r ? A PubMed Central (PMC) reference number, or PMCID, is a unique num-ber assigned to a work that is posted to PubMed Central. The PMCID number is found under the “abstract” display in PubMed. If the PMCID is not yet as-signed for papers in press or published within three months of when an applica-tion, proposal or progress report is due, you will need to submit the paper for an NIHMS ID (Method C and D forms of submission). f i n d i n g p M c i d n u M -b e r S : You will need a PMCID number for each journal article that meets all of the criteria below: 1) The article was or will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. 2) The article is the result of grant funding. 3) The article was accepted for publication after April 7, 2008. Start with Endnote. Do a new search of PUBMED (NLM) from within Endnote. Once you’ve found the article, double-click to open the Endnote reference.

Access My NCBI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

Scroll down until you locate the PMCID field. OR go to PubMed online and do an author or citation search. At the bottom of each abstract, you will see the PMID on the left. If a PMCID exists for this article, you will see it on the right. If not, highlight and copy the PMID number and go to the PMID/PMCID Con-vertor Tool at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/pmctopmid. Click the convert button after entering the fields. If a PM-CID exsits for the article, it will be given to you here. If not, the author of the article will need to take care of obtaining a PMCID number by one of two submis-sion methods (Method C and D) at: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/submit_process.htm.

The NIH Public Access Policy requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to the digital archive at PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication. To help advance science and improve hu-man health, the Policy requires that these papers are accessible to the public in PubMed Central no later than 12 months after publication.
