Overview of SummitSasha Land

Maryland Coastal Training Program

Mid-Atlantic Living Shorelines Summit

1. Share research tools & techniques and

lessons learned related to Living Shorelines

2. Explore how to use this shared information toenergize programs at the state and local levelsacross the Mid-Atlantic

3. Strengthen and coalesce the LS communityacross the region

Did anyone attend the

Summit?

Mid-Atlantic Living Shorelines Summit

• 221 participants –  All Mid-Atlantic states were represented and beyond

 – Mix of local/state/federal government; NGO’s; marine contractors;consultants; and design and build.

•  Agenda was designed to be a mix of presentations andparticipant driven conversations.

•  Agenda, Participant List, & Presentations can be found

Outstanding Questions:

Efficacy, long-term and short-term, in various

sites and conditions on – Ecological resources

 – Physical performance

 – Water quality

This was most important to Research, Science &

Monitoring & the Regulatory & Policy Sectors

Outstanding Questions:

Which kinds of LS are most effective and where?

This is most important to the Project Managers &

Implementers & the Design & Build Sectors

Outstanding Questions

Habitat trade-offs (riparian buffer, sub-tidal)

This was important to the Regulatory & Policy

Sector

Outcomes

Table discussions about 3 questions related to Using

Performance data to drive change.

What Information SHOULD be collected for each project?

 – Water Quality

 – Sediment movement/budget/erosion rates

 – Creation of marsh (density & species composition)

 – Evaluation about whether the project met the desired goals

Using Performance Data to Drive Change

Ways to make monitoring a standard practice in all LS projects.

 – Condition of the permit

 – Need to develop “standard or core” monitoring & define

goals of monitoring

 – Citizen monitoring approach

 – Funding to implement

Using Performance Data to Drive Change

Ways to communicate the information more broadly across

sectors

 – Centralized place to house information (including science,

design standards, lessons learned)

 – Pro-active communication

What we heard…….

• LS practitioners should convene more often at a regional level

to discuss issues.

• Figure out a way to broadly share information on LS and have

smaller groups tackle specific issues.

• Need to identify who will convene or manage keeping people

connected

• Regulatory/Policy: White paper to keep to share data and

information that could help to inform policy

• Large scale format (i.e 2 day summit) may not be the way to

advance LS implementation and tackle specific issues
