One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has been flapping its wings for56 years.

The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motionby flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The HawkWill Never Die."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100 submis-sions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropri-ate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attackwhich has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 sea-son.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball magazine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

Finnesey Field, currently in its 83rd year, hasbeen home to 10 different varsity squads at SaintJoseph’s. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJU foot-ball squad, the field has undergone numerouschanges over the years and has been home to overa thousand SJU varsity games, matches and trackmeets.

The most recent upgrade occurred in 2008when the AstroTurf, laid down in 2001, wasreplaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf.

Home to the men’s and women’s lacrosseteams, men’s and women’s soccer teams, the fieldhas seen other modifications since its inception in1929. The prospect of a 70,000-seat bowled stadi-um for football was dashed when the sport was dis-continued following the 1939 season.

Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, callingFinnesey home until 1959. Saint Joseph’s men’ssoccer began in 1958 and played every season butone (1960) at Finnesey. In 1960, the original grand-stand, as well as the hillside seating near OverbrookAvenue, were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Halland the Bluett Theatre were built. In the process ofthe 1960 construction, the field’s elevation wasraised five feet to its current location.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey atrue multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights fur-thered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 on thehill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovation to ahistoric stadium.

The women’s lacrosse squad is 60-83 in 19 seasons on HawkHill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-2 enroute to an 8-6 campaign. The first game was played on March 23,1993 when SJU defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 18-4.

The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 55-73 markin 19 seasons.

The location has also been home to men’s soccer since 1958and women’s soccer since 1996, while the field hockey teamwrapped up its last season on Finnesey in 2007.

Overall, the site has seen 1,168 games entering the 2012-13academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of 530-588-50.

2012 REVIEW

22

TheHawkWillNeverDie!

Saint Joseph’s University

Entering the 2012 season with a completely new identity, the SaintJoseph’s men’s lacrosse team showed much improvement under first-year head coach Taylor Wray. The program turned in a 6-9 overallrecord as it picked up its first win against a Colonial Athletic Associationopponent as a member of the conference.

Under a “work hard” philosophy from the coaching staff, the play-ers bought into the idea and had a turnaround season. The coachingstaff did a tremendous job of preparing the team and laying the founda-tion for future success by making sure all of the little things were donethe right way.

Sophomore Ryan McGee emerged to be a leader after his off-sea-son turned into a season-long performance that put his name in the SJUrecord book. His 38 goals which were second in the conference has himtied for second all time in school history. He went on to add 14 assistsand tie for the team-lead in ground balls with 35.

Also helping to the lead the offensive charge was the consistentplay of junior Kyle Williams and senior Augustus Quinzani. Williams wassecond on the team in scoring with 13 goals and 14 assists whileQuinzani’s season was highlighted by a game-winning goal againstQuinnipiac late in the fourth quarter.

A trio of senior captains, Trevor Dougherty, Bobby Hurley and PatSinnott controlled the midfield for SJU, helping clear to clear the ball andplay a solid transition game.

On the defensive end, a mixture of young talent paired with expe-rienced veterans to improve their goals allowed by nearly 3.5 per game.Freshman Will Farrell led the team in caused turnovers with 16 in justeight games as fellow freshman Kevin Barrow caused eight in 12 starts. They had the opportunity to learn from seniors Matt Germain and ColinRoemer have helped anchor the defense over the past few years.

Augustus Quinzani

Between the pipes for Crimson and Gray was senior Griffin Ferrigan. Asthe defense stepped up in front of him, he did himself. His 9.31 goalsagainst average sits him sixth for a Hawk in a single season and his 11.67saves per game put him number one in the CAA.

SJU opened the year with two losses to Lehigh and Bryant before itgrabbed its first win. Three goals by Williams and McGee led a 12-4 vic-tory over VMI that snapped a 14-game losing streak the Hawks were rid-ing from the 2011 season. They carried the momentum into the Wagnergame one week later as Hurley and freshman Michael Doughertystepped up to add two goals apiece in the 6-5 win over the Seahawks.

From there, Saint Joseph’s kicked off a four-game home swing thatfeatured three losses and an exciting comeback victory over Quinnipiacthat was capped off with a fourth quarter goal from Quinzani. The goalpicked up the team’s third win of the year as the scoreboard read 8-7 atthe end of regulation.

The Hawks went on to lose their next four games against some ofthe toughest conference opponents.

Following the four-game skid, the squad ended the season on abright note as it closed out the year with three straight wins againstMercer, Marist and Towson. McGee combined to score a total of 15goals over the last three games.

With a talented core of young players returning to Hawk Hill nextseason, coach Wray is confident the team will be ready to compete fora spot in the four-team CAA tournament next season.
