TheMaurerFoundation’srootsinbreasthealtheducationgoallthewaybacktotheprivatepracticeofourfounder,Dr.VirginiaMaurer.Whileseeingpatientsasabreastsurgeon,Dr.Maureridentifiedarealneedforwomenofallagestobebetterinformedabouttheroletheyplayintheirownbreasthealth.Fromlessonsonearlydetectiontoreducingriskfactorsforbreastcancer,Dr.Maurer’ssuccesswithherownpatientsandtheirfamiliesledhertoreachouttothesurroundingcommunity,particularlythroughlocalhighschools.ThisoutreachwasadirectresultofDr.Maurer’sbeliefthatthechoicesyoungwomenmaketodaycanwieldatremendousinfluenceovertheirlifelongbreasthealth.

In1995,Dr.Maurer’spersonalpassionbecamethedrivingforcebehindTheMaurerFoundation.Inthatfirstyear,wereachedjustoverathousandpeople.Sincethen,over204,000peoplehaveheardourlife-savingmessageofcombatingbreastcancerthroughearlydetectionandprevention.

Ourprimaryoutreachoccursthroughthebreasthealthprogramswepresentinhighschools,colleges,communityorganizations,businesses,andhealthfairsthroughoutLongIslandandtheGreaterNewYorkarea.Duringtheseprograms,weofferpracticalinformationaboutthe

myriadofwayswomencanactivelyimprovetheirownbreasthealth.Fromdemonstratingproperbreastself-examtechniquesandoutliningthe

importanceofearlydetectiontodescribinghowlifestylechoiceslikedietandexerciseaffectbreastcancerrisk,wefocusonthereal-lifetoolswomencanusetoimprovetheiroddsagainstbreastcancer.WealsoprovidetrainingforhighschoolstudentstorunBeingBreastSmart(BBS)clubsintheirschools,allowingforpeer-to-peerencouragementandaccountability.

Withsomeofthenation’shighestbreastcancerratesoccurringrighthereonLongIsland,webelieveourcommunityoutreachistrulylife-saving.Thisyear,over230,000womenwillbediagnosedwithbreastcancer,andnearly40,000willdie;however,wearenotpowerlessinthefaceofthisdisease.Evidenceshowsthathealthylifestylechoiceslikegoodnutrition,regularexercise,andnotsmokingcanreducetheriskofbreastcancerforminginthefirstplace,whilestudieshavelongdemonstratedthatcatchingbreastcancerearlyisthebestpredictorofsurvival.Asmoreyoungwomenareempoweredandeducatedthroughourbreasthealthprograms,wehopetheresultwillbealastingimpactoflowercancerratesandhigherrecoveryforgenerationstocome.

Dr.VirginiaE.Maurer,MDisanationallyrecognizedleaderinthefieldofbreasthealtheducation.AgraduateofQueen’sUniversitySchoolofMedicineinKingston,Ontario,Canada,sheisaFellowoftheAmericanCollegeofSurgeonsandtheRoyalCollegeofSurgeonsofCanada.Dr.Maurerisaprominentbreastsurgeonandbreastcancerspecialist.Shehasbeeninprivatepracticesince1981andcurrentlymaintainstwoofficesintheNewYorkarea.

Astaunchproponentofbreastcancerawareness,Dr.Maurerdiscoveredthatmanywomenlackedaccesstopertinentandcurrentinformationaboutbreasthealthandbreastcancer.Sheresolvedtocorrectthatdeficit,establishingTheMaurer

FoundationforBreastHealthEducationin1995.Today,sheremainsactiveinherroleasFounderandBoardMember.

Overtheyears,Dr.Maurer’stenacity,compassion,andprofessionalismhavemadeheroneofthecountry’sleadingadvocatesforwomen’shealthcare.SheisamemberoftheAdvisoryBoardof1in9,the
