Welcome to the 23rd annual LifeMap Portland To Coast Walk Relay! A sincere thank you to LifeMap Insurance, our enthusiastic second year title sponsor of the largest and best walk relay in the world! Also welcome renowned Providence Cancer Center, as our new exclusive charity partner! The 2013 race sold out a month after “Opening Day” of registration. Please take time to read the entire handbook and complete the crossword trivia on page 56!
• The NEW ALL-ONLINE MANDATORY VOLUNTEER TRAINING is a big change you will see in regards to the pre-event experience. Training will no longer take place in person, but rather through an online comprehensive online quiz, where team volunteers take the mandatory training in the comfort of their home and on their own time. See page 15 and visit http://volunteer.hoodtocoast.com for info!!
• Be Visible! From 6:00pm through 7:00am all walkers must wear one small front and back LED flasher, a reflective vest, and flashlight or headlight. Reflective vests should be worn through 9:00am only.
• Hear Your Surroundings! The use of headphones or audio amplification devices (worn on the head) while walking in PTC is not allowed and enforced as grounds for team disqualification (see page 12).
• Safe Driving. We are partnering with Oregon State Law Enforcement for the PTC ‘Safety Agreement’ (page 59) committed to safe relay driving. It is required to submit a signed copy of the Safety Agreement for proper team Check-In at the Start.
• Reduce-Reuse-Recycle! Utilize and bring re-usable water containers! If you must use plastic bottles, our event will have co-mingled trash/recycling bins at the Start, all exchanges, and Finish beach party! Plastics will be sorted out post-race by 'Waste Free Oregon'! Additionally, all handbooks are printed on recycled paper.
• Fundraise to fight cancer! Our sincerest thanks to 2012 participants, sponsors, and staff who fundraised a staggering $634,000 to support cancer research! HTC/PTC fundraising has increased ten fold in seven years! Go to www.htccharity.com to get you and your team started with fundraising online. Let's all do our part to find a cure.
• Cut N' Walk: simple 'leg' directions on pg 18-19 to cut out and carry in your hand or pocket while you walk!
• Finish Beach Party! Reward yourself with the huge, newly redesigned finish party on the beach in Seaside! Team pictures, food, beer and wine garden, vendor samples and live music/dancing will keep those endorphins going long after you're done walking!
We hope your experience in the 23rd LifeMap Portland To Coast Walk Relay is as enjoyable as it is for us to put on this special event! Organizing the world's largest walking relay, the LifeMap Portland To Coast Walk Relay, takes large scale planning and prepa-ration. The countless details necessary to create this incredible event is accomplished by our dedicated Race Committee and Course Coordinators who work year-round to bring walkers the enjoyment, support, and safety of a world class event. A huge THANK YOU must go out to our race VOLUNTEERS! CAPTAIN'S CHECKLIST
As a Captain, your duties involve the following:1. Travel/Accommodations: • Plan ahead!! For assistance in obtaining van/vehicle, hotel, and flight reservations. 2. Required Team Safety Equipment:Each team must have the following items in their van and present them for inspection at the Start Check-In Tent.You will receive your team wrist wrap (baton) once completed.

3. Volunteers:It is MANDATORY for participation in this event that every team with one or more local members provide (3) race volunteers. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and without physical limitations that would not allow them to perform the assigned duties. Don't bring children or dogs. Volunteers should be assertive and plan to work! Captains are responsible for ensuring that their volunteers each take (and pass) the mandatory online training, are at their appointed jobs, at the designated time, to fulfill the required tasks. Volunteersreceive shirts on-site. (Bring a flashlight and two LED flashers for night shift!) If avolunteer cannot report, it is up to the TEAM to find a replacement and make surethey report to their specific job site. (Online Training 6/17-8/17: http://volunteer.hoodtocoast.com)
4. Vans• Teams are encouraged to make a sign for each of their vehicles that reads: “CAUTION: WALKER ON ROAD” to place in the rear of the van. VANS MAY NOT FOLLOW BEHIND THEIR WALKER!• Each team is limited to TWO vehicles, preferably a VAN or SUV type. NO VEHICLES wider than 80" or longer than 20'-0". NO MOTOR HOMES, BUSES or LIMOUSINES are allowed. Teams not abiding by this rule will be disqualified.• Van Signs: Each team will be issued five signs, two are in color and three are white. On Van 1 place a white sign on the front and rear driverside window. On Van 2 place a white sign on the back and the two colored signs on the front pas-senger and driver's side corner of windows. The colored sign is required to access legs #19-23 and #32-36 • Van Decorations/Music: Don't use overly suggestive or foul language for decorations. Have fun but use good judge-ment...don't make us get out the van decoration police! ALSO, music cannot be broadcast over outside loud speakers!
5. Team Captain Meeting & Packet Pick-up CAPTAIN MEETING: two options: 10:30am or 12:00pm at Packet Pick-up (7/27) to discuss race changes and other pertinent info. Race bags/shirts for local teams must be picked up by someone associated with the team from 9:00-11:30am (HTC teams 1-500, PTCW 2001-2200, all HSC) 11:30am- 2:00pm (HTC teams 501+, PTCW 2201+) only available on Packet Pick-up day. RACE BAGS have the team start time, volunteer assignments, van signs, race bibs, and race shirts. For teams located outside the local radius, race shirts and bags will be available at Packet Pick-up or at the Start on race day. (Not be avail-able at any other time). 6. Portland To Coast Merchandise (www.portlandrunningcompany.com)An array of 2013 PTC merchandise will be available before the race at Portland Running Company stores, online and at the Start and Finish, hosted by Portland Running Company! If available, exchanges of unworn race shirts for different sizes will be allowed at the Finish Merchandise Tent.
7. Team SuitesTeam suites within the beach Finish Area are available to celebrate with your teammates, family, and friends. They're ideal as a private team gathering place in the midst of the excitement of the Finish, offering premium catered food (provided by Quartet Restaurant), a private team suite bar area, fire pits and more. There are a limited number, so reserve your suite soon! Contact Hood ToCoast via email: [email protected], or call (503) 292-4626.
8. Photographywww.finishshots.com will take photos as teams cross under the Finish banner, as well as stages set-up with team photos after the finish chute area. www.finishshots.com will also provide on-course action shots of individuals. Every attempt will be made to photograph participants, but no guarantee is made. Individual and team photos will be available online, Tuesday after the race. (No printed photos available before this time).

CAPTAIN'S CHECKLIST cont.8. Portland To Coast Walk Start The START is located on Willamette on Springwater Trail, adjacent to Oaks Amusement Park, on the east side of the river and just north of the Sellwood Bridge in Portland (7805 SE Oaks Park Way, Portland 97202). The race will begin Friday, August 23, with starting times every 15-30 minutes. Historically, we have been on schedule to the minute, so DON'T BE LATE ! Van 2 may come to the Start, but is encouraged to instead rendevous with Van 1 at Exchange 18.
“Out-of-Town” teams can receive their bags, race numbers, wrist wraps, vehicle signs, and T-shirts at the Start. Arrive approximately 45 minutes in advance of your Start Time to collect these materials and officially check in.
CHECK-IN PROCEDURES: 1. Present team safety equipment at the Equipment Check-in Area for inspection (reflective vest, flashlight or headlamp, and two LED flashers). Your team will then be issued a Race Wrist Wrap. Without your Race Wrist Wrap/baton and approved Safety Equipment, your team will not start the race.
2. Twenty minutes before your team’s assigned Start Time, check in at the Team Check-in Area. Approval of safety equipment must be secured prior to checking in here. You will need to state your Team Number to officials and sign alongside your team name on the CHECK-IN sheet. Any team member can check the team in, not necessarily the Team Captain.
3. Teams scheduled to start in each upcoming wave will have their team name and number announced five minutes prior to scheduled start. Your first walker must check-in and be at the Starting Line. Do not attempt to start before yourassigned start time!
4. Team Record: Each team can record their individual leg times as well as the accumulated walking time at the completion of each leg for posterity. These sheets DO NOT NEED to be turned in at the end of the race. (Available on page 58).
9. Portland To Coast Walk FinishThe Finish is located on the beach, just north of the turnaround of Broadway Avenue in Seaside, Oregon. Be aware, traffic and parking are very congested at the Finish in Seaside. Use of the free parking shuttle is highly encouraged! (Map included on page 48, and at www.hoodtocoast.com/race-information)
Team members often walk across the Finish Line with their anchor walker who is officially finishing the race. If your team chooses to do so, make sure your official leg 36 (anchor) walker leads your team to the Finish Line. This walker will be the one who is credited with an official finish. Note: the Finisher will be walking down the Promenade along the seawall to a ramp which slopes down onto the beach. This is near Oceanway Avenue. A special team holding area will allow your team to meet up as the last walker comes down the ramp. Listen for announcements.
UPDATED FINISH RESULTS: Results will be produced as often as possible throughout Saturday. Final results will also be posted at www.portlandtocoastwalk.com/results. If for some reason, you do not agree with the final results, please file a report prior to 4:00pm on Saturday to the designated Penalties Table.
FINISHER MEDALS: Will be given toeach qualifying team as the finishing walker crosses the Finish Line. If the team has not received credit fortheir volunteers at that time or in the event of team disqualification, medalswill be withheld and informed of the reason at the Penalties Table. Medals WILL NOT BE MAILED to teams, theymust be picked up on Saturday, or atthe PTC office at a later date.

10. Awards Ceremony: Saturday from 5:00-6:30pm, in front of the main stage on the beach, Portland To Coast Walk and High School Challenge awards will be given out to the TOP SIX teams in EACH CATEGORY. Hood To Coast awards are at 9:30AM Sunday. All teams awarded should have their team captains and/or team members present. Awards will not be mailed to teams who aren't present. Other pick-up arrangements should be made. Be sure to get their early for...
11. 'Best Of' Recognition:On the opposite side of your team record sheet, cast a VOTE for the overall "Best Decorated Van," "Best Team Name","Best Team Spirit/Outfit" and "Outstanding Volunteer. The results will be announced at 5:00pm, and posted on the 'Results' webpage.
12. Penalties: Teams may watch for rule infractions by other teams. There will be race officials recording infractions as seen. Teams wishing to file penalty/protests (note 'Race Rules' pg 13) must do so in writing within 30 minutes of their finish in Seaside. Submit the written form at the Rules & Penalties Tent. Be specific and detailed. It's imperative to have a team number to identify the team. The Rules & Penalties Committee will evaluate all incidents; their decisions are final. To enforce a penalty, infractions must be reported by two or more teams. This system has resulted in disqualifications.
13. Finish Beach Party: Enjoy the newly redesigned festivities with family and friends in Seaside!
Food and Beverage: NEW FOOD BY QUARTET RESTAURANT! Deluxe burgers and veggie burgers, wild salmon sandwiches, grilled portabella w/ feta sauteed peppers and vinaigrette, grilled corn on the cob, clam chowder, summer salad, fresh fruit, veggie dips, hummus/pita, chips/salsa, strawberry lemonade, iced tea, and an ice cream bar! (11am-10pm). Breakfast options include breakfast burritos, muffins, bagel & cream cheese, fresh fruit (7am-11am Sat).
Widmer Bros. Beer & Wine Garden: Located within the fenced area at the Finish party on the beach. No beer or alcohol is allowed to be brought into the event area on the beach. Bring I.D, proof of legal age will be required. DESIGNATE A SOBER DRIVER IF YOU PLAN ON DRINKING ALCOHOL. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE, BE RESPONSIBLE. Open containers on the prom are illegal and police enforce infractions.
ATM: Need cash? Look for the West Coast Bank ATM vehicle and signs on the beach!
Music Center Stage: From 12:45pm - 3:45pm Saturday, the main stage will host the pop/rock 'Brian O'Dell Band', with 'HIT MACHINE' back performing as the headliner from 6:45pm-11:00pm Saturday evening! Plan on dancing into the night to an energetic and entertaining Northwest favorite! Don't miss this amazing party!
14. Absolutely no open containers or consumption of alcohol is allowed during the race or on the race course (this isn't Las Vegas)! Teams seen or reported doing so will be disqualified and could be fined/cited by Law Enforcement. Please save it for the huge beach party at the Finish!

Recruit Teammates! Connect with walkers looking for a team, or teams looking for walkers by visiting w w w. htc re l ay fo r u m . c o m ! C h at w i t h fe l l o w p a r t i c i p a nt s , a s k q u e st i o n s a n d p o st to re -cruit other walkers! Discussions range from teams looking for additonal walkers to tips/advice and logistics.
Start Times will be determined according to team member pace times submitted on race rosters. These times should reflect the pace time each person would expect to walk on race day if they were in a typical 5k, 10k, Half Marathon or other race. These pace times are calculated into the predicted pace each walker should average throughout the race, including a specific deterioration factor over two legs. Your team's "Anticipated Finish Time" will be indicated on the 'Team Roster' page within your Race Packet. The seeding procedure spreads waves of slow, medium and fast teams throughout the race.
PTC Team Time: The average walk team finishes in approximately 28.5 hours. Don't underestimate how fast you will actually walk!
Team additions/substitutions should reflect any change(s). Special Seeding Requests for starting times will NOT be accepted. Teams

Team Seeding The seeding system composes teams with similar anticipated finish times, and creates a projected deterioration factor from times submitted. All team members should submit and resubmit pace times which truly reflect their ability. Teams are not simply seeded slowest to fastest! Inaccurate pace times can result in issues ranging from safety and congestion, to volunteer and equipment support issues for participants. If teams do not submit accurate and honest pace times and finish 2.5 hours ahead of their anticipated finish time, they risk being disqualified.

MIXED CATEGORIES: Teams with 12 members are to have a min. of six (6) women. Teams with 10-11 members are to have a mini-mum of five (5) women. Teams with 8-9 members are to have a minimum of four (4) women. Teams with less than the required number of women for mixed categories will become men's categories. Any team with 1-5 men and the rest women will be classified within the mixed categories.
*Teams with less than six (6) participants must be approved by the race organization, including verification of physical ability. These teams are then assigned according to appropriate category. (Team Category will update automatically on the 'Team Roster' page as team gender and age composition changes).

All teams are to walk their members in rotating legs and in the same sequence of rotation throughout the race. Walker on leg #13 would thus walk legs #13 and #25. When determining the who will walk each leg, (besides distance and leg rating), Captains should consider the following variables:
· The time of day walkers will encounter each leg· The leg's exposure to sun and/or wind· Variable weather· Walker ability· Walker familiarity with the area· Whether there is any van support on the leg· Walker willingness to walk on a gravel (and potentially dusty) road
The combination of the first three of these is perhaps the most crucial. Some legs are notorious for brutal sun exposure on walkers during the day. Several examples are Legs 16, 17, and 35, where walking can be in direct sun with little shade.
Walker SubstitutionNo participant may drop out of the race solely for the purpose of the team substituting a faster walker in their place. If a walker is forced out due to injury or illness, they MAY NOT be reinstated into the team lineup. The team must finish the event with the remaining walkers moving forward in the same sequence. No alternates may be added once the team has started. (60 min. penalty if involved in improper substitution).
Substitution ProcessSubstitution Process for Teams (other than Mixed Divisions):If a walker drops out due to injury or illness during a leg and isn't able to walk to the next exchange, the next walker in rotation may take the wrist wrap and continue to the end of that leg. The next leg must be walked by the next walker in rotation. No more than one substitution is permitted in a single leg.
Substitution Process for Mixed Divisions:If a walker on a Mixed Division team becomes injured/ill and drops out during the leg, the above applies with the addition that the replacement walker must be of the same gender. If a minimum of (17) legs are not completed by females the team will automatically be reclassified into the Men's Division. EXAMPLE (presume injury to female #1 0n leg #16):

main RACE RULESThe following rules and policies are for the safety of all participants. A violation will result in a time penalty or disqualification.
1. 3 VOLUNTEERS: It is mandatory for participation in this event that all local teams provide three volunteers who must EACH take and pass the mandatory online training and fulfill their required jobs duties the day of the event.
2. WEAR WRIST WRAP: Team members must wear the wrist wrap and race number while walking, as well as a reflective vest, one front and one back LED flasher, and carry a flashlight from 6:00pm to 7:00am (reflective vest only until 9:00am). Participants will be held at the exchange and not allowed to walk without the proper equipment. Volunteers must also have a flashlight.
3. NO HEADPHONES OR AUDIO DEVICES ON THE HEAD: audio devices are only allowed to be worn below the head while walking. Volunteers also will not be allowed to have any audio devices on while fulfilling their job duties.
4. NO OPEN CONTAINERS OR ALCOHOL ON COURSE: Inebriated teammates or volunteers on the course will not be tolerated! Teams seen or reported doing so will be disqualified and could be fined or cited by law enforcement.
5. DESIGNATED SLEEPING FIELDS: only areas for participants to sleep (roped off with caution tape). Tents are allowed at Exch. 18, 0.5 mi past Exch. 23 (Leg 24), and Exch. 24. Sleeping field (NO TENTS) at Exch. 30. Race DQ if found sleeping on ground next to vehicle!
6. EDUCATE YOUR TEAMMATES ON THE COURSE: as well as guiding teammates as needed. If a wrong turn is made, the participant must return to the course on foot to the point where the error occurred and resume the race. Don't mark turns on the course!
7. NO BICYCLES OR DOGS ALLOWED to accompany participants on the course.
8. USE PORTABLE TOILETS, GARBAGE/RECYCLING CONTAINERS PROVIDED! It is totally unacceptable to litter, urinate or defecate on private property. Your behavior affects the environment and could force the discontinuance of the race.
9. COURSE VOLUNTEERS: are regarded as Race Officials and their instructions must be followed and respected.
10. TEAM VEHICLES: must not exceed 80" wide or 20' 0" long. No motor homes, buses or limos are allowed. Only two (2) vehicles are permitted on the course for the support of the team. On certain legs (19-23 and 32-36) only one team vehicle may be on the course. The other vehicle must use the alternate routes shown in the handbook. Van decorations may not be overly sexual, suggestive, have foul language or other offensive slogans.
11. DISPLAY VAN SIGNS: teams are provided with three white and two color signs for course vehicles. Teams are required to display the white sign on the outside rear window of each van with team name and number. Van 1 white sign and two Van 2 colored signs are to be posted on the outside front driver's and passengers side corners of windows.
12. WALKER ROTATION: All teams are to run their members in the same rotation and in the same sequence of rotation throughout the race. Participants cannot run back to back legs. See pg. 12 for substitutions and sequence info.
13. DON'T DROP OFF NEAR EXCHANGE ZONE: No parking/dropping off teammates permitted within 500 feet of an exchange! Vans must obey "No Parking" signs and volunteer instructions for parking.
14. SANDBAGGING: Any teams that start the race early or finish over 2.5 hours faster than their anticipated finish time will be disqualified and all teammates risk being banned from future participation if the behavior continues two years in a row.
15. QUIET HOURS: No loud noise, music, or yelling between 10pm and 6am (respect the communities).
16. PARTICIPANTS ON LEFT: Participants are to walk along the left side of the road except legs #14 through #16.

EXCHANGES are marked in yellow paint on paved roads, and pink flagging along gravel roads (yes, this course does have gravel stretches (dust); so bring bandanas/painter’s masks, or just grin and bear it)!
WAITING WALKERS who will walk the next leg MUST line up single file (after warming up) along the exchange zone-shoulder of the road behind the EXCHANGE POINT. Faster team walkers are to be towards the front of this “chute." Step out of the CHUTE into the EXCHANGE ZONE as your walker approaches. Walkers finishing must exit the exchange zone promptly and follow volunteer instructions.
ONLY WALKERS presently preparing to walk are allowed on the LEFT side of the exchange roadway. ALL spectators MUST remain on the RIGHT SIDE of the road. Walkers are to walk along the left side of the road except as indicated in the Team Handbook (legs #14 - #16).
Parking and stopping near exchange is not permitted within 500 feet prior to an exchange. Vans must obey 'No Parking Between Barricades' signs, and be sure to not stop or park on or near the white lines on roadways!
No drop off near Exchange Zone. Follow volunteer directions for parking areas.Navigating the Course. It's highly recommended to drive the course in advance of race weekend. See "Drivers Guide" in handbook or at bottom of: www.hoodtocoast.com/course-maps for driving instructions.
The race course and finish line will officially close Saturday evening at 9:00pmAny teams still on the course at that time are requested to either discontinue the race, OR finish by walking more than one of their walkers at the same time (only if instructed by Race Officials). Teams cannot walk legs concurrently unless instructed by RACE OFFICIAL and given sticker for their log sheet. All teams are seeded to finish before the course of-ficially closes. If your team has been honest in supplying 10K times, everyone should finish no later than 9:00 PM. THIS MEANS THAT SOME EXCHANGES (33, 34 AND 35) MAY CLOSE BEFORE 9:00 PM due to scheduling. THESE EXCHANGES SHOULD DO SO IF YOUR TEAM IS TO FINISH BY 9:00 PM.

SAFETYIn emergency, call 911 and locate Exchange Leader or Radio Operator at nearest Exchange. Medical care and first aid safety is the responsibility of each team and participant. Each team needs to be prepared to care for the common medical needs of their walker, and have a first aid kit prepared. **You and your teammates MUST write important emergency contact and medical info on the back of your race bibs!
Communications: There will be a Radio Communications Operator at most exchange points along the race course. The radio person’s primary responsibility is communication for emergencies, but they also help with logistical issues. They will be positioned near the exchange zone. If you see anyone hurt, please get their race number, exact location, and nature of the emergency, if possible, and let the radio operator know at the next Exchange Point. They are capable of calling in full emergency medical, police, and fire response.
Giving Aid and Support along the Course: Absolutely no team members or spectators are allowed to cross busy highways or streets with the purpose of giving aid or support to participants running along that side of the road! Team vehicles MUST safely cross over to the other side of the road where the walker is, park, and unload support people.
Walking at night: Maintain contact with your van within reason along the course. DO NOT follow behind walkers! Vans can pull in a safe area (off of the road)! Don't obstruct traffic! Walkers are permitted to carry a whistle or other precaution if desired.
Participants must wear a reflective vest, front and back LED flashers, and carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp from 6:00 PM through 7:00 AM (through 9:00 AM for reflective vest only) while walking. THIS IS STRICTLY ENFORCED.
Teammates/support personnel are highly encouraged to wear a reflective vest and LED flasher when not inside the race vehicle, while on the course or at an exchange (from 6:00PM-9:00AM).
Walkers must understand there WON'T be any police promised to protect them from vehicle traffic along the course. Great care must be exercised at all times by walkers and team vehicles. Walkers must face traffic (except Legs 14-16, where they walk on the right side of the road) and obey all traffic laws. A motorcycle patrol group will be on the course (legs 13-35) for safety monitoring. At several exchanges, PTC hires professional traffic flaggers. Obey their signals. Volunteers don't have the authority to flag.
Use of headphones or audio amplification while participating is banned, however, music devices with speakers below the head are allowed. Headphones severely impede the ability to hear sur-roundings and are a major safety hazard. Your team will be disqualified if a teammate does not adhere to this policy.
Hydration & First Aid: There will not be First Aid Stations on the course. There are some long sections of the course in the latter stages where no available water sources exist. BE PREPARED. By midday the temperatures may be very hot! The most important step you can take during the race to ensure a safe, fast performance is to continually hydrate. CARRY LARGE WATER CONTAINERS in your vans to refill bottles. As the average team is out on the course for 28 hours, remember to drink plenty of fluids! The least amount of water that most healthy adults should consume (to maintain hydration) everyday is 8 to 10 cups (8 oz). For someone walking, 12 to 16 cups a day is recommended. Many injuries are directly related to soft tissue trauma and are effectively treated with ice. Real ice works much better, and is less expensive than chemical ice packs. Ice should be carried in a cooler and used with plastic bags and a layer of damp towel over sore, tender, bruised and blistered areas. Any wrapping or taping should only take place after effective ice therapy. Follow guidelines for R.I.C.E. (Rest Ice Compression Elevation).
Oregon law states that no open containers of alcohol are permitted within vehicles. Save the celebration for the FINISH beach party. State Police spot these things quite easily, and history suggests they’ll be watching again!

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
Assertive volunteers who are willing to work are needed! Volunteering is approximately 4-5 hours. All jobs are on the COURSE, START or FINISH areas. Volunteers must bring a flashlight if shift is at night/early morning.
Volunteer Registration: Starting June 17, Team Captains can log onto the Team Roster(http://register.hoodtocoast.com) to register volunteers. Each volunteer must have a unique email address. You can send your volunteer(s) an email invitation to register, take/pass online training, and subsequently choose a Volunteer Job from those shown as still available. Once a position is filled, the job listing will disappear. Volunteers assignments are FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED so register early! All volunteers must have passed online volunteer training and confirmed a job selection no later than Aug 17, 2013 or the team will be disqualified. The assigned volunteer job will be displayed within the Online Roster.
Exchange Leaders Only: contact Volunteer Director [email protected] for these assignments (must meet in person at JELD-WEN Stadium 1:00pm, follow signs for 'Exchange Leaders'). One 11-12 hr Exch Leader shift fulfills requirement of 3 volunteers.
ALL ONLINE VOLUNTEER TRAINING: A mandatory online Volunteer Training audio/visual pre-sentation and subsequent multiple choice quiz is required to be passed as fulfillment of volunteer training. Each of the three team volunteers MUST individually watch the audio/visual presentation and pass the on-line quiz. It can be taken over as many times as necessary to pass. Free race day volunteer shirts are provided, but size estimates are based on previous year's volunteer pool because of manufacturer's early order require-ment. A volunteer shirt is provided to each volunteer, however personal size requests ARE NOT guaranteed. Attendance: Teams are responsible for their volunteers peforming their assigned duties, at the correct time. If a volunteer can't go, the team must find a replacement and make sure the job is fulfilled. Failure to report for assignment results in team DQ.All volunteers wear the race official shirt given when performing their job, identifying them as a 'Race Official'. If they cannot, they will still be accepted to perform the job. When the volunteer checks in, they should s ign in with their Team Number in the Exchange Book, for the team to get credit . DRIVERS GUIDEDriving the course requires as much planning as running the race. Below are directions to help you plan and avoid frustration caused by having over 2,000 vans concentrated in the same area during a 36-hour time period.
Drive Course Before the Race:• Note where all turns are located.• Identify exchanges (and areas where more time will be required).• Know the difficult parking areas and plan accordingly.• Be aware of where stops can be made to provide walker support.• Know where facilities for food and restrooms are located. It is very important to find additional restroom stops to minimize the need for lengthy exchange stops.• Locate gas stations, the last fuel stop before the beach in Seaside is in St. Helens (Leg 18).• Establish places, (other than exchanges), where your team vans can meet.• Become aware of areas where vans won't be in contact with their walker and how to deal effectively. THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO (2) AREAS ON THE COURSE THAT WILL BE RESTRICTED TO ONE VAN PER TEAM There are areas where congestion is caused specifically by narrow roads and the number of vans traveling. Teams will not be able to have two vans together from Exchanges 18-23 and 31-35 or risk being disqualified.• Cell phone coverage may not be available in all areas (particularly legs 18-32). Have a back up plan.
Areas Restricted To One Van: • Between Exchange 18 (Columbia County Fairgrounds in St. Helens) and the intersection of HWY 202 and Old Ranch Road (Leg 23). Map shown in handbook (page 28).• Between Olney (Exchange 31) and HWY 101 in Seaside (Leg 36). Map shown in handbook (page 41).• There is also a shortcut route listed in the handbook leg map from the PTC Walk Start to Exch 13.

VAN 1 DRIVING DIRECTIONS:• Upon entering Astoria, turn left onto the long bridge over the bay following the signs saying to "Warrenton and Seaside" until reaching Hwy 101.• Drive south along Hwy 101 approx. 25 miles to Seaside.• The Finish is on the beach at the end of Broadway St. (commonly called "the turnaround/prom") in Seaside. (See Seaside Shuttle Map, page 60 for parking options). Park in shuttle area or other, and meet your last walker one block north of the turnaround on the beach near where Oceanway Ave dead-ends at the beach.
This route takes 45-50 minutes to Seaside.

You and your team have the unique opportunity of participating in ‘The Mother of All Relays’ in part because of the local authorities and volunteers who assist in creating a safe relay environment.
To keep the roads safe for all 17,400 participants, as well as non-relay vehicles, we annually partner with law enforcement to create a ‘Safety Agreement’ for all teams to abide by.
It is mandatory that EVERY PTC WALK TEAM SIGN ONE (1) COPY OF THIS SAFETY AGREEMENT.
This agreement must be turned in at the Start Check-In Area. FAILURE TO TURN IN THE SIGNED SAFETY AGREE-MENT WILL RESULT IN A TEAM NOT ALLOWED TO START AT THEIR ASSIGNED TIME.
Teams and drivers are responsible for their own safety, as well as the safety of others traveling along the relay route. Motorists and relay participants rightfully deserve and appreciate safe roads. Thanks for driving safely!

Safety Agreement
• All state traffic laws shall be obeyed at all times while operating your Team Vehicle. • Violators of any Motor Vehicle laws are subject to ticketing by law enforcement at all times. (HTC/PTC is exempt from any responsibility or liability for illegal acts, and will report illegal acts if witnessed).• Team Vehicles must completely pull off to the side of the road when stopping to assist teammates, and not block the path of walkers. (Vehicles are required by law to be over the fog line and not in traffic lanes. Walkers are required to use the shoulders when available; team vans must exit the roadway com pletely to be clear of traffic and racers on the shoulder). • Team Vehicles shall not block the roadway or race course at any time.• Team Vehicles shall not block private residential driveways or roadways.• Team Vehicles shall respect neighborhoods and others along highway and roads. The use of a horn (unless as a reasonable warning) and playing loud music may be unlawful. • Team Vehicles may need to drive slower than the posted speed limit, but shall not impede traffic or follow on roads behind a walker.• Team vehicles shall obey the speed laws at all times.• Open containers of alcoholic beverages are prohibited in any motor vehicle at all times when on a public highway.• Team vehicles shall obey drinking and driving laws at all times.• Team vehicles shall obey littering laws at all times. • Teams agree to use approved restrooms and porta-potties, exclusively at all times.• Except in an emergency, all drivers shall obey Oregon's cell phone law. Avoid distractions -no texting.
