Senior Salute The Lady Flames will honor a pair of graduating seniors on Saturday, in redshirt-junior outfielder Jill Stephens and student manager Abbie Seale. Stephens has played in 132 games with 81 career starts after redshirting in 2010. She has posted a .252 career batting average with 46 runs scored, 15 doubles, six home runs and 27 RBIs. She hit a career-high two homers against N.C. A&T on April 10, 2012. Stephens, a biology/pre-med major from Kansas City, Mo., is set to graduate in May. Seale has served as Liberty’s student manager for the last three years, putting in tremendous time and effort. A native of Lebanon, New Hampshire, Seale will graduate in May with a degree in health promotions - clinical.

Virginia Recap The Lady Flames fell twice to Virginia on Wednesday, despite outhitting the Cavaliers, 16-14, on the day. During game one, a 7-3 UVA win, Katie Zavodny stole her 40th base of the season, putting her in sole possession of first place in program history. Sammi Shivock hit her seventh homer of the season, and 22nd of her career. The Lady Flames battled back to within one run on three occasions during the night-cap, with the Cavaliers holding off Liberty, 7-6. Kassidy McCoy went 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs, while Kelby Allen hit her team-leading eighth home run. On Wednesday, sophomore Chandler Ball entered Liberty’s all-time top 10 list for career strikeouts, as she has fanned 179 batters during her career.

Close Calls Although Liberty has dropped nine straight decisions, three out of the team’s last five games have been decided by just one run each. During Liberty’s last five contests, the Lady Flames have outhit opponents, 44-35. On the season, Liberty is 7-7 in one-run games, as the Lady Flames have posted their most one-run victories since 2008 (7-12). Record Setting Katie Zavodny set Liberty’s program record for single-season stolen bases on Wednesday, stealing her 40th base and breaking Stacy Radulovich’s (1996) record of 39. Zavodny has 78 career stolen bases, and needs three more steals to break Radulov-ich’s career record of 80 (fourth all-time in Big South history), set from 1996-99. Earlier this season, Zavodny set the single-game record for hits (5, twice), and tied Alycia Stevens’ (1995) record with a 23-game hitting streak from Feb. 24 through April 3. Zavodny leads the Big South and ranks fourth in NCAA Division I in stolen bases. Great 8 Sammi Shivock is currently on an eight-game hitting streak, tying the longest hitting streak of her career. During the last eight games, Shivock has hit .370 with two homers, six runs scored and five RBIs. Katie Zavodny hits .367 with seven stolen bases and five runs scored in the same span, while Kassidy McCoy has posted two homers and seven RBIs.

K Day in Rock Hill Last Saturday at Winthrop, both Chandler Ball and Annah Jo Brittingham registered career highs in strikeouts. Ball fanned eight Eagles during game one, tying her career high, set on April 21, 2012 at Presbyterian College. Brittingham, a freshman, fanned seven Eagles in the second contest while pitching a career-high 8 2/3 innings.

On the Home Stretch Liberty is in the midst of a seven-game homestand to end the regular season sched-ule, setting a new program record for most home games in a row to close a regular season. After this weekend’s series against Coastal Carolina, the Lady Flames will host Virginia Tech of the ACC on Tuesday.

Moving On Up Sammi Shivock entered Liberty’s career top 10 lists in three categories last week. Shivock is now tied for ninth in program history with 22 home runs (Dawn Jeffs, 2006-07), and shares ninth place in career RBIs, with 89 (Amanda Maska, 2002-04). She is ranked 10th in program history in runs scored (98).

And the Award Goes To ... Hanna Nichols and Sammi Shivock have both been named Big South Softball Player of the Year once this season. They are the first pair of Lady Flames to be named Big South Player of the Week during the same season since 2011, when Ashley Bensinger and Keely McMillon were both honored as Player of the Week twice. Nichols earned the award on March 25 after batting .583 with three RBIs during the previous week. Shivock received Player of the Week distinction on April 15, posting a .538 average and seven RBIs during four games played. Big Innings On April 13, Liberty scored six runs during both the fourth and sixth innings, on the way to a 13-5 win over Gardner-Webb. It marked the first time that Liberty scored five or more runs in two different innings of a game since April 10, 2012, when the Lady Flames recorded back-to-back five-run innings at the start of a 13-5 win over North Carolina A&T. During the Gardner-Webb game, Blair Lawrence hit a key, two-run double to spark Liberty’s fourth-inning outburst, which also included a three-run homer by Sammi Shivock. Amber Donovan slammed a three-run home run in the sixth to break the game wide open. 9X3 When Kassidy McCoy went 3-for-3 on April 12 against Gardner-Webb, she became the ninth Lady Flame this season with at least one three-hit game. She joins Kelby Allen, Amber Donovan, Hanna Nichols, Grace Nordan, Holly Seiz, Sammi Shivock, Jill Stephens and Katie Zavodny on the list of Liberty players with three hits in a game this year.

Quick Conference Report The Lady Flames hold an 8-13 conference record, and are in sixth place with three Big South games left. Liberty can finish anywhere between fifth and seventh position. Liberty is 6-4 in Big South home games this season, and is 2-9 in conference away contests. All seven of the Lady Flames’ conference games played on Friday have been decided by two runs or less. The Lady Flames have won one conference game in walk-off fashion (March 22 - PC), and lost two on walk-off base hits (at Campbell, at Winthrop). Liberty has pitched one shutout in conference play (W, 7-0 vs. Radford), and has been shut out by one Big South opponent (L, 0-11 at Charleston Southern). Katie Zavodny hits .438 with 20 runs scored in conference play, while Kelby Allen (.400) has recorded four home runs and 19 RBIs. Hanna Nichols bats .388, and Kassidy McCoy has a .317 Big South batting average. Sammi Shivock (.296) has driven in 18 runs, and Amber Donovan (.288) paces Liberty with five homers during league action.

Record Hitting Sends Liberty Past CSU, 15-4 On April 7, Liberty scored 11 unanswered runs, registering a program-record-tying 19 hits during a 15-4 win over the Buccaneers. Liberty’s 15 runs were its most against a conference opponent since a 15-6 win over CSU on April 22, 2005. During the game, Katie Zavodny tied her own program record with five hits (also Feb. 27 versus Hampton), and she is the only Lady Flame ever to record a five-hit game. Holly Seiz drove in six runs on April 7 at CSU, one shy of a school record.

New Faces During Liberty’s season opener, three freshmen - Annah Jo Brittingham, Katie Han and Blair Lawrence - started. Since then, freshmen Kenzie Friesen, Kassidy McCoy and Holly Seiz have all made at least one start, making this the third year in a row in which six Liberty fresh-men have started at least one game during a season.
