COMMUNITY CHAMPION AWARD Chief J. Thomas Manger The Community Champion Award recognizes an individual who embodies a spirit of service, commitment to the community and devotion to the betterment of society. We are honored to recognize Chief Tom Manger, Chief of Police for Montgomery County, as the recipient of this year’s award. Chief J. Thomas Manger has been the Chief of Police in Montgomery County, Maryland, since February 2004. He began his law enforcement career in 1977 with the Fairfax County (Virginia) Police Department. He rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police in 1998. During his tenure in Fairfax County, Chief Manger received numerous awards including the Silver Medal of Valor. His commitment to the highest ethical standards for policing and his enactment of new policies to increase departmental accountability earned significant recognition from the community, including the Fairfax County Human Rights Commission Award for outstanding contributions, and the N.A.A.C.P.’s Community Service Leadership Award. In 2012, Chief Manger was inducted into the Montgomery County Human Rights Hall of Fame. In addition to running one of the 50 largest police depart- ments in the nation, Chief Manger serves on the Board of Directors for the Hearts and Homes for Youth, which operates group homes in Maryland for troubled youth. He also serves on Cardinal Wuerl’s Child Protection Advisory Board, providing counsel to the Archdiocese of Washington for the safety and protection of all children. Chief Manger has also been a long-time basketball and baseball coach for CYO and City of Rockville teams. The Scholarship Fund provides academic scholarships for YLF students to attend the University of Maryland. Since its inception, the tournament has raised nearly $1 million for YLF and its students. YLF serves at-risk youth in Washington by boosting academic performance while developing character. Founded in 1997, YLF has seen 97% of its students graduate from high school and go on to college. YLF is a 501(c)3 organization. All gifts are tax-deductible. JOHNNY HOLLIDAY A native of Miami, Florida, Johnny Holliday began his broad- casting career in Perry, Georgia, and has worked in some of the nation’s premier markets—Cleveland, New York, San Francisco and Washington. In 2003 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In addition to his radio career he has had leading roles as an actor in summer stock and dinner theatre musicals. In 1978 he became the “Voice of the Terrapins” at the University of Maryland. In addition to calling the action for Maryland basket- ball and football games, he hosts pre- and post-game shows for the Washington Nationals. His devotion to the University community is legendary and is surpassed only by his dedication to the Washington, D.C. community. He has helped to raise more than $2 million for various charities and was named Washing- tonian of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine. Johnny Holliday remains committed to providing educational opportunities for students and believes that all students should have access to a college education. For many years, he has been actively involved with the Youth Leadership Foundation and with many other youth organizations that serve Washington, D.C.’s most in need.
