Our Water Resources Program focuses on the application of timely research and outreach efforts to encourage sustainable and secure water resources for humans and wildlife through watershed restoration, land management practices and policy innovations. Our Military Sustainability Program supports the testing and training activities on U.S. Department of Defense lands through land management and regional planning, research and policy innovations, and education and outreach efforts. These efforts support the twin imperatives of military readiness and land conservation stewardship. Research Rangewide estimates of endangered golden-cheeked warbler We conducted research to provide the first data-driven rangewide estimate of the distribution and abundance of the federally endangered golden-cheeked warbler within its breeding range We developed a map used to predict occupancy of the warbler across its breeding range and a computer-based management tool that can help identify locations and configurations for developments that will minimize the impact to the species

Management White-winged dove conservation and management In cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and more than 15 state wildlife agencies we are developing a biological support framework for long-term conservation of white-winged dove populations Our research is integrating data on species demographics harvest metrics regulatory actions and stakeholder expectations into population models supporting a national harvest management plan

Research Freshwater mussel research program Of the 52 mussel species known to occur in Texas statewide declines in distribution and abundance have led to the listing of 15 species as state threatened in 2009 of which 12 are being considered for federal protection or listing under the Endangered Species Act Our freshwater mussel research strives to improve knowledge of the distribution life history characteristics and conservation status of Texasrsquo freshwater mussel populations

Management Trinity River Information Management System (TRIMS) More Texans depend on the water wildlife and recreational resources from the Trinity River Basin than from any other river basin in the state In cooperation with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and Trinity River Authority we developed the Trinity River Information Management System a tool for local stakeholders to easily access and use spatially explicit data for making land conservation and habitat restoration decisions in the Trinity River Basin (trimstamuedu)

Preparing this countryrsquos military personnel for the challenges of war requires air land and sea spacemdashplaces for training that are similar to those where they will fight Realistic training saves lives Large suitable spaces are vital to the ability of the US Department of Defense to conduct live-fire training and weapons systems testing Yet many of these military installations once remote now face increasing encroachment from competing uses of land water and air that threaten the militaryrsquos testing and training missionmdashthe cornerstones of military readiness

Research Chagas disease and military working dogs Working with Joint Base San Antonio (Lackland Air Force Base) we are studying the transmission of Chagas disease to military working dogs from free-ranging wildlife populations Current research is being used to identify preventative strategies and develop proactive habitat management practices to reduce the risk of disease to both humans and canines

Management Endangered species management on private lands in North Carolina We are improving our knowledge in the distribution and abundance of red-cockaded woodpeckers on private lands With this information we are currently developing market-based strategies that serve to enhance the long-term recovery of the species while ensuring future training flexibility for the military

Research Rangeland restoration practices on Camp Bullis This project supports the mission training requirements of the US Armed Services at Joint Base San Antonio (Camp Bullis) through vegetation management and monitoring vegetation response to different brush removal practices Research will inform land managers on best management practices in addressing Ashe juniper removal or reduction

Management Texas Land Trends Partnering with American Farmland Trust we developed Texas Land Trends an interactive website (texaslandtrendsorg) and database that details current land-use trends within Texas to provide decision makers with information on risks in the conservation of working rural lands in Texas

Policy and outreach Market-based conservation in eastern North Carolina Through this project we have developed a market-based conservation system in partnership with US Marine Corps Installations East North

Research Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America Researchers in our Energy Program are developing advanced analytical protocols for air water and stray gas sampling at oil and gas sites This effort includes going to hydraulic fracturing sites to develop standardized methods for air emissions continuous monitoring for open flowback water impoundments analytical methods for sampling fracture flowback water and best approaches for sampling stray gases in water

Management Environmentally Friendly Drilling West Regional Center management Our researchers and program managers provide oversight of the Environmentally Friendly Drilling West Regional Center for the Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems Program managing more than 20 research projects in nearly all deep shale gas plays west of the Mississippi River Research includes air emission reduction water reuse and treatment invasive species management and social impacts
