The latest generations of comple-mentary metal oxide semiconduc-

tor (CMOS) imaging technology have greatly diminished the his-toric distinctions between CMOS and its rival, charge coupled device (CCD). In addition to improving on image quality, CMOS sen-sors have been incorporat-ing additional functional-ity while increasing both speed and resolution. The result is that CMOS image sensors are becoming the preferred technology for high-speed inspection applications.

Compared to the first generations of CMOS

imagers, CCD imagers had a compel-ling advantage. CCDs were able to take a snapshot-like image using a global

shutter that triggered all photodetec-tors in a 2-D array to capture and store image energy simultaneously. Early CMOS devices could only offer a rolling shutter that triggered image capture across the array one line at a time, which distorted the image of moving objects. CMOS 2-D imagers incorporated global shutters in 1999, but for many years still ranked behind CCD devices in terms of image quality.

Much has changed in the last few years. For one thing, CMOS global shutter technology has improved sig-nificantly. One of the early problems with CMOS global shutters was shutter leakage. CMOS shutters work by passing photoelectric energy from an active sen-sor to a corresponding storage node. The storage node holds that energy for read-out while the active sensor is forming its next image pixel. High-intensity illu-mination on the active sensor, however, can cause energy to “bleed through” and alter the contents of the storage node.

CMOS image sensor vendors devel-oped both voltage domain and charge domain methods for storing pixel information. Voltage domain methods provide a lower noise floor, enabling the sensor to operate effectively at lower light levels. They also provide better resistance to shutter leakage. However, voltage mode pixels are able to collect and store less signal than pixels based on the charge domain

Compared with the modern wizardry that goes on every

day in homes and offices across America, indus-trial technology can seem pretty mundane. When was the last time you were excited—really excited—about a new lathe?

Generally, time on the shop or factory f loor means abandoning the creature comforts such as the Internet, Wi-Fi, touch screens and so on. The really cool stuff, we’re told, was for the guys upstairs.

Times change, though, and with them, entire strata of operators and

users have been elimi-nated from operations throughout the United States. For many, the job of quality assur-ance and inspection has been passed down to the level one operator who typically was not charged with matters of advanced metrology. Manufacturers of coordi-nate measuring machines (CMMs) are recognizing this shift and designing products that are sim-

pler and faster to use, and work more like the smart phones that sit in your pocket rather than the multi-ton, fixed bridge CMMs of the past.

THE GREAT METROLOGY MIGRATIONTo understand this shift, one must first understand the driving force behind it. It is no secret that the manufacturing industry has seen nearly three million jobs eliminated the past five years or so, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While many of these jobs were lost on the shop floor, many others were entire tiers of jobs charged with advanced operations such as metrology.

Many auto manufacturers, for example, no longer hire experienced metrologists to perform their daily quality assurance and part measure-ment operations. Instead, they employ only a few to resolve high-level threats to quality.

2012 CASE STUDIES ADVERTISEMENT

The Mars rover Curiosity is scheduled to land Aug. 6 for its nearly two

year investigation of the red planet. Because the rover is essentially

a prototype, only three or less of any component was made, design

criteria were not fi nalized until manufacturing started.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL, Pasadena, CA) met this challenge

with various Brown & Sharpe CMMs, a ROMER articulating arm and

Leica laser trackers equipped with PC-DMIS software. Additionally,

many of JPL's 200+ contract manufacturers and independent labs

measured parts and generated standardized reports using the

interoperable PC-DMIS. The open architecture allows program

changes to be made at any location, at any sequence and ensured

consistency throughout JPL’s supplier base.

The ROMER arm was used for on-machine measurement while

components were still in their original setup. It also extended the

range of CMMs by inspecting features that fell outside the measur-

ing envelope. Programs originally written for a CMM were easily used

with the arm thanks to PC-DMIS. It incorporated the arm and CMM

into the same program or facilitated importing the arm’s data into

the master program.

One contractor relied on the ultra-high accuracy Leitz PMM-C CMM

for lenses used in the robotic arm and stereographic cameras. A mea-

surement required repeatability of two-tenth true position tolerance

of a 3” diameter lens over a 20” travel zone. Theoretically achievable,

it required several changes to the process to bring it down from eight-

tenths to the required range. This instilled a high degree of confi -

dence - after all, it is impossible to replace faulty equipment on Mars.

address a pair of 64-element probes, allow-

ing this to be carried out in a single pass,

improving both the speed of inspection and

positional accuracy since the two probes

are linked together.

Effi cient and effective scanning can also be achieved when the new

veo is partnered with Sonatest’s large Wheel probe which is capable

of scanning a strip of up to 100mm in a single pass. The system is Ideal

for large area scanning applications and corrosion inspection.

Aerospace composite inspection applications are enhanced using

the 128 element capability; as several inspection techniques for

advanced materials such as GLARE have now been developed which

require high resolution probes with 96 or 128 elements.

Further benefi ts to the new 16:128 veo include the capability of pitch-

catch inspection techniques, merged c-scan inspections, top views and

included UT Studio viewing and analysis software.
