    BY DEBBIE BROWN

    INSIDE LINCOLN CORRESPONDENT

As adults, we look back onsummertime fun when wewere kids and know that

any sort of water activity was a

    treat.Unless you were lucky

enough to have a pool (or livewithin walking distance to abody of water), once school wasout, the easiest way to stay coolwas to spend an afternoon inthe sprinklers. Decades ago, itwasnt unusual to drive throughany American neighborhoodand see children traversing theirfront yard, as they screamedwith delight at impossibly dodg-

ing the water droplets. Wewould don our bathing suits, grab a towel, pull out the gardenhose and hook up whatevermodern sprinkling devise dad

had purchased at the neighbor-hood hardware store.

Remember the sprinklers thatwould shower you with anoscillating arc of water? What-ever house had one of those is

where the kids always seemedto have the most fun since thatwas top-of-the-line in sprinklerfun!

While having a pool was a bigdeal, the sprinkler offered itsown opportunities ... as well asthose pieces of grass blades thatwould always stick to your feetand were hard to get off.

Maybe its because mosthouses today have programma-ble irrigation systems or

because there is a larger varietyof opportunities but the squealsof neighborhood kids in thefront yard is not as prevalent asit once was.

Whether you have a backyardpool, there are other fun waysto beat the heat this summer. All it takes is a little imaginationand sometimes channelingyour inner child.

It can be difficult to pull thekids away from their videogames while sitting in an air-conditioned room, but if youwant to get them out for a littleexercise, then remind themhow much fun it is to have agood old-fashioned water bal-loon fight.

A few years ago, we had anexchange student from Ger-many, who had never heard ofwater balloons. After explaining

to her what the object of thegame was, it was no timebefore I had kids ranging from12- to 18-years-old having agreat time with that simple

invention. It doesnt matter how old a

person is, water balloonsalways seem to be fun.

You can also play a game ofSplat in the driveway or your

back patio. All you need is waterballoons and chalk. Toss theballoons in the air as high aspossible. When they land, takethe chalk and trace the outlineof the watermark. Whoever hasthe balloon that makes thebiggest splat wins the game.

If your idea of a relaxing after-noon just involves curling upwith a good book and a tall glassof your favorite beverage butthe heat is keeping you from

being able to concentrate onyour summer reading list, thenadd a cooling towel aroundyour neck. These towels aremade of a hyper-evaporative

material (like a chamois fabric).I recently wore one of thesearound my neck when I wasphotographing a wedding in108-degrees temperatures. Iwas pleasantly surprised at how

well it worked.Taking a drive up the coast is

another sure way to beat thePlacer County heat. When itsblistering hot at home, thecoast is often a little foggy anddictates wearing clothing youthought wouldnt see the lightof day until the fall.

Sometimes when the temper-ature rises, our imaginationsplummet and we forget aboutsome of the simplest (and inex-

pensive) ways to stay cool. Cre-ate your shopping list now sothat when the temperature isworking overtime, youll becool, calm and collected.

Beat the heat with these creative options

Even pets arehappy to get outof the heat.Sometimes, thetemperatures atthe beach are 30degrees less

than what theyare in PlacerCounty. HarperBrown enjoysthe coolerweather andfrolics amidst thewildlife at DillonBeach.

    Some other waysinclude:

Although usuallysaved for Halloween, bob-bing for apples is a greatway to stay cool (all it

takes is a large metal orplastic tub, some apples, and lots of cool water).

Freeze several waterbottles, so that when youhave to be outside on ahot day, you can eitheruse them as portable icepacks to keep your treatscool or you have a drinkthat will stay coolthroughout the day.

    Going to sleep at night

is a difficult task when thetemperatures are still neartriple digits. Make sleep-ing a little easier by usingtwo frozen gel packs (likethe kind you use in yourcooler or as an ice packfor injuries), in bed. Wrapeach in a towel, and putone in your pillow case ontop of your pillow and theother at the foot of yourbed. By pulling the heataway from your head andyour feet, it makes your

whole body cool downand it will be easier tosleep.

Mel Torme was a geniuswhen he wrote TheChristmas Song (Chest-nuts roasting on an openfire). He told the story

that it was an unbearablyhot summer and he wastrying to think of some-thing to stay cool. Tormeproved that mind overmatter is sometimes themost powerful tool wehave.

Water balloons have always been a fun way forkids to cool off in the summer. Actually, kids of allages enjoy a good water balloon fight or game ofcatch with the aqua grenades.

Corn-stuffed tomatoes add a medley of vegetables to your grilled meal. Topped with bacon from Tootles in Wheatland, served along side of their meatloaf, this was an easy, yet delicious, weekday meal.

Among all the delicious pro-duce that will be enjoyed thissummer, tomatoes are proba-

bly the most prevalent. Theyreeasy to grow, can be planted

on even the smallest of patios, and if you dont grow them, they are inexpensive to pur-chase.

A couple other favorite sum-mertime crops are corn andbasil.

    Recipes abound with these

three items being the keyingredients and corn-stuffedtomatoes is a great dish tomake with the leftover corn onthe cob that you had with lastnights dinner.

Even if someone doesnt carefor the taste of tomatoes, the

corn filling is delicious all byitself and a refreshing alterna-tive to the traditional greensalad.

Beefsteak tomatoes are aperfect size to use as an ediblevessel for this salad.

Whats a summertime meal without a delicious drinkto enjoy with it? The Zebra Zing is a blood orange cock-tail but is easy to make alcohol-free by just omitting the

vodka. With so many new varieties of rum and vodka on themarket, its easy to create a new signature drink for yoursummertime barbecue. Signature drinks are a fun wayto add a little flare to whatever gathering youre havingthis summer.

To make your possibilities even more endless, whynot give each guest an ingredient to bring? Give them aguideline for what they should contribute to go withwhatever drink theme you want.

For the Zebra Zing, its citrus based so there are a lotof other yummy ingredients that could be used withthat theme.

Just by substituting the orange sherbet for vanilla icecream, this could become a Creamsicle type ofdrink.

Almost any drink can be made alcohol-free by sub-stituting the use of club soda, lemon-lime or fruitjuices.

After that delicious barbecue, you may be too full fordessert, so why not drink your dessert?

Actually, theres always room for dessert, right?

You know the ones - pennycandy, a lunch counter wherethe teens hung out with theirfriends, and aisles and aisles ofbargains (at least this is they

but it gives them totalcontrol on how their "car

    wash" operates.Going through your

kitchen cabinets can yielda multitude of items to

use in projects. Rice is atactile-friendly productthat kids can use to deco-rate art projects or use asa "palette" on which to"draw." With a few simpleingredients, you can cre-ate a rainbow of colorsthat will allow hours ofentertainment for yourchild (once colored, therice can be stored in acontainer and reused).

After you've created yourrice recipe, lay it on acookie sheet and let yourpreschooler use his fin-gers to write numbers, thealphabet or anything elsehis mind can conjure.

Finding a project thatyou and your child like isjust part of the activity.Use this time to createsome memories, to allow

interaction between thetwo of you, and just toshow him or her thatsometimes the simplestactivities are the mostfun.

When my grandmother(who had emphysemaand was fairly disabled)

used to have my then-preschool-age daughterover for a visit, they wouldspend hours using someof the simplest items tomake projects. Aliremembers my grand-mother using various-sized empty aspirin bot-

tles to create "sugar/flourcanisters" for Ali's toykitchen.

They would also metic-ulously cut out pictures ofthe collectible dolls thatthey'd find in magazinesand make their ownpaper dolls. Those memo-

ries stick with my nowadult daughter and havecreated a priceless mem-ory album for her that willlast a lifetime.

Ali was in the third-grade when my grand-mother died. At the funer-al, Ali read an eulogy shehad written and said that

    what she loved about

spending time with hergreat-grandmother washow they took care ofeach other. There wereactivities Ali was too

young to do and grandmahad to help Ali; there wereactivities that grandma

was no longer physicallyable to do that Ali had tohelp her with. Thesememories are still as vividto 27-year-old Ali today as

they were back then. The activities might be

inexpensive little projectsyou're making with yourkids, but in the end, theymay end up being price-less. The little things in lifeare often the grandest.

    Grocery Store Quiz

If the package sayssugar free, does that meanthat its good?

If there is no choles-terol, does that mean thatits good?

What is the differencebetween organic and nat-ural?

How did you do? Keepin mind when you aregrocery shopping that thecompanies that produce

our food spend billions ofdollars to create productsthat make us want to buymore.

Even the grocery storesskillfully lay out theiritems in hopes that wecome uneducated andunprepared so they canmake more money.

Here are some tips thatwill help you look beyondthe packages to providehealthier meals for youand your family.

    What to look for

Short ingredient listand avoid ingredients thatyou cannot pronounce. You want to purchaseproducts that are nothighly processed with abunch of chemicals oradditives.

Organic. For compa-nies to label their prod-ucts organic, they mustfollow specific rules andprocedures to ensure that

the food is grown withoutbeing genetically modi-fied or using pesticidesand chemicals.

Serving Size. Payattention to how manyservings the item con-tains. Sometimes, although you may think itis only one serving, the

    label says otherwise. This

means that you are drink-ing or eating more caloriesthan you may recognize.

Quick Tips Preparation is the key

to success! Time is money. The outer perimeter is

usually where you want tospend most of your time.

When choosing bread, cereal and pasta, make

sure to grab the ones thatare the least processed.

Dont buy junk andyou will eat less of it.

    JULY 2013 INSIDE LINCOLN 11

Ahhh, California in thesummertime. Itmakes us think sun-

    shine, beaches, hiking,barbecues and fun.

It makes us think lessabout ticks, fleas, intestin-al parasites and heart-worm but they are rightthere with us.

In fact, because of ourMediterranean climate, they are with us all yearround.

Weve already writtenabout heartworm preven-tion and flea/tick prod-ucts but its time for anupdate! As with any pre-ventative product or med-icine, the science behindit evolves, primarily as aresult of better studies

and driven by increasingresistance to existingproducts.

For those of us who areusing some of the morepopular OTC flea/tickproducts, due to increas-ing resistance, a newproduct has been devel-oped: Activyl. For fleas, itkills the adult stage foundon the dog but will also

stop flea eggs and larvaefrom developing, all in asingle product. Address-ing these stages of the flealife cycle is important incontrolling infestation inyour home environment(carpet, bedding) andpreventing re-infection. Asingle adult female flea, dropped onto the carpetby the family pet, can pro-duce 40 to 50 eggs per day,

or 2,000 eggs, in their life-

time. All those developingfleas do not discriminate.Humans are just as yum-my and fleas will feed onchildren as enthusiasti-cally as they feed on pets.Fleas can cause allergicreactions at the site of thebite, spread bacterial dis-eases and transmit tape-worms.

    Activyl repels ticks anddiscourages attachment.

It is effective, even withour swimming dogs, andis safe enough to use ondogs and puppies that areat least 4 pounds and 8weeks of age. It is only fordogs! The product usesthe pets natural oils tospread on the skin afterapplication. It is also fra-grance free!

    Another old product

is back. For those wholoved Interceptor as theirheartworm prevention,Novartis is now producingSentinel Flavor Tabsagain, with Interceptor asone of the components.Sentinel Flavor Tabs, usedmonthly, prevents heart-worms, roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and fleas. It is less likely tocause gastrointestinal

upset, found with some ofthe other oral heartwormproducts, and has theadded benefit of address-ing whipworms, a risingstar in the parasite world. In our increasingly mobilesociety, the prevalence ofhookworms and whip-worms, primarily foundin the southern states, isbecoming a nationwideproblem. In addition,

Sentinel Flavor Tabs aresignificantly cheaper thansimilar products, costingno more than traditionalheartworm preventionalone.

These new/old prod-ucts are very safe andeffective and can be usedin combination withoutfear of toxicity.

Idont know about youbut these last eightyears has been a chal-

Fortunately, there aremany that believe wehave turned the cornertoward a financial recov-

ery of sorts. Even thoughin the downturn, manyjobs were lost and manyof us were forced out ofour comfort zones andhad to get serious aboutour jobs and financialwell-being.

I have heard it said that,as a nation, we needed tosober up and get realinstead of living in the fogof stated income and

multiple refinances, justto spend the equity onboats, cars and vacations.

Fortunately, interestrates are still very low, andeven though propertiesare less easy to find, thehard work is worth it.

Many individuals aresurprised to find out howmuch equity they cur-rently have on a property

that a short while ago wasupside down. This is an ideal time to

    move up in the market.

The higher the price, themore homes and propertyyou will find to look at.

invite a quick sale, a goodprice and many potentialbuyers.

Your home can shinewithout expensive, time-consuming improve-ments. Plan for a yardsale and sell those itemsyou dont plan to take withyou. Eliminate clutter; getrid of magazines, newspa-

pers, bottles cans andsuch. Pack away what youdont really need.

Remember, a buyerwants to see space. Thatway, they can imaginetheir items in the homeinstead of yours.

If your home does nothave curb appeal, chances are buyers willnot even look inside thehome. Stand at the curb,

not at the front door, andlook at your property andobjectively appraise yourplace. See it as if for thefirst time, and through thebuyers eyes. Then con-sider what you can do tomake it so it seems to say,I am interesting, comeinside and see more ofme.

in the early hours two or threeweeks before putting the prop-erty on the market, clean oilspots from the driveway, makesure that the garage door opensand closes easily, clean swim-ming pool and make sure thepumps and filters are well-maintained, remove any out-of-place items on the yard andrepair any flaws in the fencing.

    The exterior

Clean windows and fix bro-ken windows or screens; they

will most likely need to berepaired before closing anyway. If the home needs paint and

    you lack time or money,

repainting the trim will help toupdate the entire faade. If youcant paint the whole house, possibly paint the side facingthe weather. You might alsostain or paint the fence. Cleanthe front porch and be sure thefront door opens smoothly.

    The interiorFirst impressions are every-

thing! Hire someone for a goodspring cleaning; this should

result in a faster sale and a hap-pier buyer. Once this has beenaccomplished, keep the house

spotless. If you are going topaint, use light neutral colors, steam clean the carpets, washand wax linoleum floors, repairor replace any damaged or

missing tiles, air out the house, assure that all doors open andclose freely, replace burned-out

light bulbs, keep curtains andblinds open and interior lightson for a bright warm and cozyfeeling. Store clutter underbeds, not in closets.

    Focus roomsConcentrate efforts on

kitchens, bathrooms and clos-ets since buyers tend to espe-cially like them. Make the bath-room sparkle and remove soap, scum and mildew. Replace toi-

let seats and make sure theshower curtain is fresh andclean. Also, clean and tidy up

the kitchen, clean oven andstove tops, clear exhaust fans ofgrease and clear unnecessaryobjects from countertops.Cookies or cakes baking willoffer a welcome fragrance.Exchange or replace door han-dles, knobs and light switchplates.

As you prepare for yourhome to go on the market, youshould preview other openhouses. Compare how you fit into the market and determine

what you can do to be compet-itive.

But what the house featuresfor the price, potential buyers

    will have the same thoughts.

Current statistics show thathomeowners who use profes-sional Realtors get higher pricesfor their homes than those whotry to sell on their own. If youplan to move soon, contact aRealtor with good recommen-dations from satisfied clients.

The best way to keep thesepest away from your yard is bykeeping your plants healthy.Usually, the most aggressiveattacks come in summer when

the heat, not enough water and

not enough fertilizer. Makesure you maintain even mois-ture and that may mean givingsome plants a little extra water

more common bugs will leave toalert you of their deviousactions.

Spider mites will feed onplant cells, reducing moistureand chlorophyll content inleaves. High populations maydevelop a visible but fine web-bing on the leaves and stems. But you will most likely noticethe flecking on the leaves andthey can also turn yellow. Youcan control them with a varietyof sprays that you can purchaseat your local nursery. Make sureit lists spider mites on the labelof bugs it will treat. Good news:there are organic miticides!

    Aphids will appear in clusters

along stems and under leaves. They love new juicy growth onplants because new growth issofter and easier for them toattack. Some of the signs that

you have aphids are distortedleafs and sticky or shiny leaves.

Aphids can be washed off orsquished but they usually come

right back. There are lots of dif-ferent controls for aphids, manyof them organic. If you try thehousehold method of treatingaphids (soap and water), makesure you use soap and not deter-gent. Most dish soap is actuallya form of detergent and can bevery harmful to plants. Ivory ornatural soaps are the only prod-ucts close to a true soap.

    Caterpillars and worms can

damage your plants. Some-times, the damage is noticeablebut not terribly damaging. How-ever, sometimes the damage canbe extensive. Most worms andcaterpillars eat holes and largesections out of your leaves,

which will reduce the plants'ability to produce chlorophyll.

Treatment for most climbingworms and caterpillars are allpretty much the same. Spraysand some dusts work well.

Again, check at your local nurs-ery and they will get you the bestproduct to treat your bug issue. There are some very goodorganic treatments as well!

Remember the most impor-tant fact: keeping your plantshealthy and nonstressed will

help keep bugs from showing upand waging war when you aresleeping snug in your bed atnight.

guy or Here comes somebodywith a healthy appetite as Ilined up with my empty plate.Ive had well-meaning peoplegive me books on weight lossand tell me they were worriedabout me.

As someone who weighed303 pounds at my heaviest, these comments and actionsstung, doing nothing to helpimprove my self image or moti-vate me to lose weight. Today, Iweigh 179, having lost 124pounds between January 2011and May 2013.

Heres a question: Do youthink someone who is over-weight doesnt already know?Chances are the overweightfriend youre trying to help hastried every diet, gimmick andweight-loss trick in the book, allwith limited success. How do Iknow? Ive been that person. Iwas unhappy with my weight,my body image and was keenlyaware of the perceptions ofothers regarding my struggle.

I tried shakes, limiting foodto a few food groups (no carb, high protein and fat), some-

thing called the French diet (eatwhat you want, but in smallportions) and all sorts of othergimmicks such as fasting, eat-ing only at certain times of theday and on and on and on.With more than 20 years ofdieting under my belt, Ivebecome something of an expertat losing weight. The real trick?Keeping it off.

So, lets look at ways to helpcurb cravings, make healthier

choices and maybe bring a dishto the potluck so you knowthere will be something on yourhealthy eating plan.

Restaurants are minefieldsFoods prepared by folks who

know what they are doing arethe downfall of many trying tolose weight. The dishes are rich, generous in portion and cansabotage a weeks worth ofhealthy eating in one sitting.Rather than skipping a meal outwith friends, try these simpleways to keep your meal optionshealthy.

Order a salad and ask fordressing on the side (preferablyoil and balsamic vinegar or sim-ple lemon to drizzle over the

salad). At Empire Ranch GolfCourse in Folsom, where I regu-larly eat lunch with a group, Iorder the green salad withgrilled chicken. The salads areoften hidden in a weird spot onmenus or are seen as a lead-into the main special. If the saladsare small, order two.

Stick with grilled or baked, not fried. If the dish is batterdipped and deep fried, you mayas well slap it to your thighs.

Avoid sauces, or what I callliquid calorie obfuscationdevices. If something is buriedin gravy, its probably not on

your healthy eating plan.Vegetables are your friends, unless they bring along that badinfluence known as butter. Insome restaurants, they cook theveggies to death then slatherthem in butter or drown themin a fat-rich sauce. Ask forgrilled or steamed veggies. Theyare your best option.

Get movingA frequent question I receive

is, How often do you work out?You must live in the gym. Asthe father of two young chil-dren, as well as dad to two

teenagers, I do not have timefor gyms. Ive written about thisbefore, but I try to include mykids in the physical activities(hiking, walking, yard work,etc.). Find exercise all aroundyou from walking to and fromyour car (park a good distanceaway), shopping (do an extratwo laps around the store), topicking up toys from the floor. IfI find myself sitting on thecouch, I ask myself one ques-tion: What am I doing this veryminute to burn calories? If theanswer isnt satisfactory, I getmoving do dishes, sweep, clean, fold laundry or go for awalk. Get up and move.

Healthy snacksI cant keep anything in my

    home which would derail my

progress during moments ofweakness. Potato chips, icecream, cookies and their ilkcant be found in my fridge orcupboards. I do keep plenty offresh fruit and vegetables aswell as the occasional proteinbar (chocolate or peanut butterfor me).

Finally, if youre going to a potluck or barbecue, bring along adish you know fits into yournew healthy lifestyle, like the

not-potato salad (see recipein inset). I served this at a recentgathering and it was a hit, evenwith the non-vegetarians.

    JULY 2013 INSIDE LINCOLN 25

    NOT-POTATO SALADINGREDIENTS

    1 head steamed cauliflower

    (mashed)

3 tablespoons nonfat plain yogurt(in place of mayo),

Regular mustard (to taste)A few dashes of apple cider vine-

    gar

1-2 chopped dill pickles (or a few

    tablespoons of dill relish)

1 chopped sweet pickle (or a

    tablespoon of sweet pickle relish)

    Salt

    Pepper

    1 clove crushed garlic (optional)

    Handful of chopped black olives

    2 chopped boiled eggs

    1/2 chopped onion (optional)

    2 small mashed potatoes (option-

    al, to thicken if necessary)

    DIRECTIONS

This is so easy. I often makea faux mashed potato withthe cauliflower and figured itwould lend itself easily to afaux potato salad recipe. This is what Ive come up with.

After you steam your cauli-flower, make sure its very dry(pat down with paper towels if

you must). If there is too muchwater, it makes for a thin dish.

Place in a mixing bowl anduse a stick blender (or manualmasher) to mash the cauli-flower.

    Add other ingredients to

taste and mix well. If its toothin, mash in two small bakedpotatoes to help thicken themixture.

Best served after its chilledovernight (or at least an hour).

Substitute steamed, mashed cauliflower to create notpotato salad. The recipe also replaces mayonnaise withnonfat plain yogurt.

If I find myself sitting on

    the couch, I ask myself

    one question: What am I

    doing this very minute to

    burn calories?
