City Hall, the beach, themountains, a church, a

winery ... what do all thesehave in common? They allcould be the perfect locationfor a wedding.

One of the wonderfulaspects about planning a wed-ding in the 21st century is thereare no limits to where a couplecan have their special day.

Having been a wedding pho-tographer for 20-plus years, Ihave been to weddings in hun-

dreds of locations, with justabout every backdrop you canimagine. From New Hamp-shire to Florida, South Dakotato Oregon, Idaho to the PacificOcean and our own backyardof Placer County, there aresome spectacular locations inour country.

Selecting a venue for yourromantic day will involvemany considerations. How

many guests you will have, whether the rental fees are

within your budget, and thestyle of your wedding in rela-tion to the venue.

Outdoor weddings areincreasingly popular and abeach is a perfect location for acouple who loves the great out-doors and one that will workfor a wedding that is large orsmall.

Kelly and Sean Menefeechose Berwick Park in Mon-terey and the Pacific Ocean forthe backdrop of their special

day. With just close friends andfamily in attendance, they

wanted to also be budget con-science.

With some planning, youcan definitely do a Montereybeach or park wedding on asmall-ish budget, Kelly Mene-fee said.

Pacific Ocean or anywhere in between, planning a ceremony that takes placehours from where you live can be prob-lematic and one that certainly requireskeen attention to detail. One logisticalissue that could arise is getting the legalaspects taken care of.

Since we had our destination wedding

in California, we were able to go to any ofthe county offices near where we live toget our marriage license and the paper-work needed for our friend, Kris, to offici-ate, Menefee said. I thought being ableto handle all of that locally ahead of timewas a lot less stressful than having to getdown to the wedding location a day earlierand do all of the paperwork last minute.

Another location that is popular, andcloser to Placer County, is Empire MineHistoric State Park in Grass Valley.Depending on the time of year your wed-ding is, this venue can offer springtimeflowers or beautiful fall foliage.

According to the Empire Mine website, special events take place after the parkcloses in the evening and may be bookedfrom May 1 through the first weekend inOctober.

Kaatri and Mark Jones had a spectacularwedding day amongst the greenery of thehistoric mine. The mine offers a ceremonysite as well as a reception area to host yourpost-nuptial party.

With just over a square mile of beautifullandscape, youre sure to find just the rightlocation for wedding photos, including

the area where the workings of the mineare situated.

Today, couples are enjoying the urbanlook in photos and Empire Mine is the

perfect place for that. To obtain fuinformation about this historical locacall the Empire Mine Visitor Cent(530) 273-8522.

Abride on a budget has sev-eral options to find thejust-right wedding dress

that is also affordable. One way of stretching dollars

is to wear a pre-owned gown or renting it.

    Colfax CommunityGift and Thrift

Lovely wedding gowns areoften donated to Colfax Com-munity Gift and Thrift, andusually run from $60 to $200,according to manager LoriGarcia.

On a recent visit, the shophad on display a brand-newgown from Davids Bridal that

still had tags attached, including one that showed

its $300 price. CommunityGift and Thrift was offeringthe size-10 dress for $175.

Available for $75 was abeaded vintage dress withtrain and bow, size 8; a small-size Victorian-style dress, alsosmall, with beaded satin, laceand covered buttons, at $95;and for $70 a small-size tulledress with head piece.

Dresses for flower girls, orfor communion, rangedfrom $12 to $20.

Shopper Tiffany Oxley, ofColfax, calls herself a non-conformist and considerspre-owned dresses a goodalternative to buying new.

Rental provides another option. GiselleHoleman, executive director, said its rentalpackage includes everything, except forthe shoes. For under $300, the weddingspecial includes the gown, veil, tiara, slip, necklace and bracelet, plus a consultationand fitting. Brides have 300 to 400 dressesto choose from for rental.

Holeman said Alexandrias purchases alldresses new from manufacturers andreceives new dresses all the time. Thatsimportant, she said, because weddingstyles change every year, and some manu-

facturers change twice a year.Current popular stylesinclude modified mermaid

style dresses that are curvefitting with flared skirts.Lots of brides are gettingmarried in non-tradition-al styles and colors, suchas Champagne and Ital-ian rum, she said.

rom simple elegance to rustic looks,

todays brides and grooms are choos-ing a range of designs and themes for

their wedding cakes.Bridal couples are even combining

themes by ordering a combination of laceand burlap, said Wendi Calton, owner ofLittle Bliss Cakery in Granite Bay.

Some are asking for bold colors such aseggplant-purple and white while otherswant fondant flowers and satin ribbon.

Ribbons allow brides to pull in theircolors on a cake, Calton said.

Shes creating cakes with smooth butter-cream frosting that looks like fondant andadding rhinestone trim.

Brides want simple elegance, she said.Calton also sees a trend toward casual

choices such as outdoor or mountainthemes.

Javier and Esther Aguirre, who ownDivine Desserts by Aguirre in Loomis, alsoget requests to create cake designs fromelegant to casual.

Aguirre said couples like monograms orfresh flowers, which are delivered by theflorist and added to the cake at the recep-tion.

Brides also like jewelry on their cake,Aguirre said.People like a little bling.

Themes the thingCalton said that some couples carry out

themes from ceremony to reception, Cal-ton said.

One selected a mountain cake withwhite frosting trees and arrived at thereception on a snowmobile.

Calton makes cupcake trees with smallcandy balls in the couples colors decorat-ing the top of each cupcake and matching

ribbon tied around the lower edges of thetiers.

She trims cake in gold by mixing lemonextract with a product called Luster Dust.

It gives a shine that frosting doesnthave.

Many couples like monograms or freshflowers as cake toppers, eschewing brideand groom figures, except for a few. Caltoncreated a cake for a couple with an obvi-ous sense of humor. They selected figuresof a bride dragging her tuxedoed husband

to the altar.TV shows such as Cake Boss and The

Next Best Baker, both on TLC, are givingcouples ideas for themes, she said.

They see TV stars picking themes andwant to try them, too. We especially seethat in cakes with Mexican or Lake Tahoethemes.

Both Calton and Aguirre said todays couples are looking for ways texpenses.

With the tight economy, people aregoing with something thats good and isedible, she said. Fondant is totally ediblebut 90 percent of people dont like it.

Trending toward tinyCalton, who offers custom cakes, cup-

cakes, candy and coffee in her shop, saidthat many brides are selecting roundcakes as toppers for cupcake trees. Thecupcakes are arranged on three graduat-

ing sizes of tiers (12-, 10- and 8-inch) witha 6-inch round cake on top.

Each cupcake is decorated and person-alized.

Cakes are time-consuming and labor-intensive to do. Cupcakes fit the couplesbudget because they dont have to paycake-cutting, delivery or set-up fees, Cal-ton said. A girlfriend or an auntie cantransport cupcake tiers in separate bakeryboxes and assemble them at the recep-tion.

Aguirre, who is doing a lot of outdoorweddings, is concerned with MotherNature when people pick up their owncakes as a way to reduce delivery costs.

Timing is something we have to workwith when its warm or when it rains, shesaid.

Cakes need to be refrigerated, some-

times from a morning delivery to an evening reception.

For outdoor weddings we need a A and a plan B, she said.

The most popular months for wdings are May, June, September and Ober, said Aguirre, whose cake calendfilling up.

Calton also has bookings for JulyAugust.

SPECIAL TO GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

So many things to consider in planning

your wedding: The guests, the dress, the food, the right colors ... and so on.

Inevitably, some of the smallest detailscan become your receptions biggest chal-lenges.

When I meet with my couple prior totheir wedding we discuss the music ofcourse, but I find it really helpful for allconcerned, if I bring up the DETAILS.

I really believe its my job to act as aproxy on site coordinator (if the couple hasnot hired a professional wedding coordi-nator) to make sure everything runssmoothly throughout the ceremony andreception.

A perfect example is the communicationbetween the photographer and the cater-er.

If the caterer is expecting to serve a timesensitive meal at 6:30 and the bride andgroom are still with the photographer tak-ing pictures at 6:15. This could mean big

trouble.I like to take the time to reach out to thephotographer and give them a gentlenudge to wrap things up, allowing thebride and groom to join their guests.

On the other hand, if the caterer is goingto be a little late getting the food ready forservice, I like to get the couple announcedinto the party so that they have time todecompress and relax with a drink andtime to mingle with the guests.

Although its not an easy subject tobroach at a pre-planning meeting, I find itsometimes is very important to find out

about the Family Politic.Example: If the bride has a biologic dad

and a stepdad whos raised her since ele-mentary school, it becomes an issue forthe father/daughter dance ... why not hon-or them both by playing two separatesongs. If the biologic dad brings her downthe aisle but doesnt want to dance, do wehave a brother or grooms father whowould like to step in for the father/daugh-ter dance?

    Success is all

    in the details

ecisions, decisions. Planning a wed-ding is a whirlwind of choices, from

colors and flower arrangements tofinding that perfect venue and hammer-ing out a delicious menu. But arguably themost important decision couples willmake is what music to have on their bigday.

Is it better to hire a DJ to man the mixingboard, churning out fun, beloved, dance-able music all night long, or should youhead down the classic route, keeping itclassy with a string quartet?

As any respectable wedding vendor willsay, its your day, and its up to you.

It depends, said Matt Brys, owner anda principal entertainer at Extreme Produc-tions of Roseville. I love a mix of both, butmany times it comes down to prices andbudget, and I get it. The cool thing, I think, about what we do at our company is peo-ple get a sense of that live entertainment

aspect along with the music that they lovemost.

Brys is quick to point out that theExtreme Productions crew are not DJs,

they are entertainers and masters of monies: A DJ would show up and music and hope for the best. Some

who owns a wedding or owns an evensit down with you and build up a soutrack, a mood and a vibe for each eve

That means working with the bridegroom to select atmospheric music fparts of the wedding, from seatingceremony to the reception. It also m

weeding out those do-not-play songcouple cant stand, and making sursound aspects of the wedding smoothly.

Mountain Event Productions owGreg Whatley said his crew become wding planners by proxy, helping makeeverything is where its supposed toeveryone knows whats going on andbride and her mother! are happy.

We have a motto that we firmly be

in, Whatley explained. Its your weddWere just there to make sure it smoothly.

In addition to emcees, Mountain EProductions also offers state-of-themulti-camera wedding videography.his crew can also coordinate untouches to the evening, including digrecording the wedding vows and plathem back during an appropriromantic bride-and-groom dance areception.

Whatley agreed with Brys that its ato the couple whether to have live m

or a DJ, but pointed out some pros ofing an emcee.

The first thing is the cost, he Live bands are extremely expensivesecondly, limitation. A live band canknow so much music and it cannot pa reception with broad strokes, and that means is styles of music. Even thoa band may be professionals, and tare a lot of good ones out there, theyhave a limited setlist. Thats just the naof the beast. We have over 12,000 sonour disposal.

Cost is a big factor in choosing music Whatley said a live band can costbetween $3,000 and $5,000. He said hefinds that his fee usually comes out to25 percent of the cost of a live band.

Alan Clark, principal cellist for theAuburn Symphony and a member ofthe Camellia String Quartet of Sacra-mento, pointed out that a more frugaloption than hiring a full band is to havea string quartet at the wedding. Camel-

lia charges $450 for the first hour ofmusic, than $200 per hour after that, along with travel expenses. That costalso includes a consultation with thequartet and bride to select the songs.

Live music, Clark said, enhances thetone of the wedding, especially if thatmusic is played by a string quartet.

Not only is there lovely music playedwhile the guests are arriving, but theceremony is enriched by the texture andbeauty of the music played while themothers and grandmothers enter, thebridesmaids enter, and especially whilethe bride processes down the aisle.

Clark said music during a unity can-dle ceremony, memory candle, prayeror vocal solo is also satisfying. And dontthink a string quartet cant get lively the perky music played during bridal

party and guest exits gives a fun sense ofcompleteness to the event.

When asked if hiring a live band isworth the expense, Clark responded, Isgoing to dinner in a nice place withtablecloths, lovely settings, controlledclimate and pleasant noise absorptionan improvement over a fast-food expe-rience? Of course! This is a special dayfor many family members beyond theimmediate wedding party, and if care is

given to enhance the experience for solittle expense as a quartet, I think it is agreat bargain and money well spent.

Ron West of Rocklins DJ West Enter-tainment said its a given that a couple

wants to hire a talented band or DJ fortheir big day. Finding one is a matter ortalking with friends and shoppingonline, he said, pointing out that he wasdone weddings with both receptionsand a DJ, and it works out great. Headded that top-notch talent getsbooked a up to a year in advance, so itsbest to book early.

Music can make or break a weddingcelebration, West said. Its one of themost important things to consider for

your reception and can send yourguests home feeling good or goinghome early.

    WHAT TO A SK

Ron West of DJ West Entertainment has been anon-air radio personality and mobile DJ entertainfor more than 25 years. Here, West provides somimportant questions couples should ask potentiawedding DJs. What equipment do you use? If you need a sound system for the ceremony, cyou provide this as well? Are you a DJ who will stay in the backgroundmaking necessary announcements, or will you b

visible and more of a performer? What will you wear? (Make sure he knows howyou want him to dress.) How is the music selected? Do you have a wide variety of songs available? Can I have a list of songs I do not want played? How do you handle the events of the evening?(It's important to know how the transitions fromone activity to another will occur.) Do you offer video projection services for a slidshow or music videos? What type of lighting do you offer? Some DJ companies have more than one DJ.Which DJ will be at my wedding? Will you play music as the guests are arriving aduring cocktail hour and meal? Do you provide a wireless mic for speeches? Do you have liability insurance? Do you bring backup equipment with you? How early will you be there to set up? Do you have references we may contact?

It has long been thought that the role in planning a wedding is to shesome cash, buy the ring, show up t

ceremony and say, I do.Such is not the case anymore, as m

and more men are taking an integralin the wedding planprocess, accordingJody Hoffman, ownCrazy Girl EventsMeadow Vista.

Hoffman specializwedding planning says she has nomore and more showing up at bshows and taking a mvested interest in pning the big day.

It used to be wherguys just didnt wan

do anything, she said. But now, becweddings have changed so much, guy

getting more involved because they wto see what is going to make their wifbe happy.

I recently experienced this firsthandwife and I were married in Septembethroughout the planning process, I qulearned that my role would not be to ply show up.

Here are some things I learned on hguy can play a role in the wedding pning process:

Just go with itI never realized that weddings are

really about the bride and the groomno, it goes much deeper than that. I dknow I had so many family membersdistant relatives, but once you invite obecomes evident you cant leave anout lest you dont mind offending som

I also never realized how many giftsare supposed to buy for so many diffepeople, either out of courtesy, appreciaor respect.

This includes bridesmaids groomsman gifts, gifts for the in-laws,

for the best man and maiden of honor, welcome gifts for all the guests, gifts forpeople who helped in the planningprocess, even gifts for the neighbors dogdown the street.

I also learned that when my future wifeasked for my opinion on something (suchas wedding invitations, napkin inserts, etc.), she truly wanted to know what Ithought, but really she was looking for me

to approve what she probably had alreadychosen.

And so I become really adept at saying,Yes, I like that, or, Im not sure, what doyou think?

From what Ive read, and experienced, most guys tend to zone out when 20 dif-ferent options for wedding invitations arepresented to them. So my advice is to tryand figure out what she is partial to, andjust go with it.

Let her know youre involvedIf theres one thing my intuition tells me,

it is that no bride, no matter how Type-Ashe might be, wants to take on the entirewedding planning process on her own.

Just as she has chosen you as a partnerfor life, she also wants you as a partner inthe wedding planning process.

Let her know you are just as dedicatedas she is in creating a day that you, andhopefully all of your guests, will rememberfor a lifetime. Odds are that you haventgrown up dreaming about your perfect

wedding day but she has.Hoffman agrees, stating that when a

woman asks her future husband for hisopinion, she sincerely wants to know whathe thinks.

Typically guys are like, I dont know, and that is not an answer, she said.Thats really hard on a bride. It makesthings a lot more stressful for the girl.

Take your job seriouslyMost likely, your future wife is goin

give you a certain task or tasks thasuited for your specific talents.

In my case, it was the music. I was dmined to hire a live band that would gshow to be remembered for all t

which turned out to be a much biggethan I had anticipated.

But after several months of organ

the logistics, the music ended up bone of the highlights of the day, and

well as our wedding guests Im surequite thankful that I took my one jobously.

Hoffman said that most men enjoyresponsibility of putting the music toger, taking part in the food tasting ancourse, helping in the decision of wkind of booze will be served.

She also agrees that a man taking a ed interest in planning the wedding glong way to making his bride confiand happy on what she hopes to bday she always dreamt about.

They want some sort of teamwomake this wedding work, she Because it is about both of you gemarried at the end of the day, and bhappy with what youve chosen.

    If theres one thing my

intuition tells me, it is that

    no bride, no matter how

    Type-A she might be, wants

to take on the entire wed-

    ding planning process onher own.
