2013 Women’s Soccer

The High Point University women’s soccer team enters the 2013 season as one of the top contenders in the Big South Conference after winning its first-ever outright Big South Regu-lar Season Championship in 2012. The Pan-thers will try and defend their Big South title and return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010 this season.

“Being the defending Big South Regular Season Champions puts a huge target on our backs,” head coach Marty Beall said. “Anytime you win a championship every team you play against the next season is extremely motivated to beat you. I think our squad is very driven this year and I am looking forward to seeing the team handle that pressure with composure.”

HPU finished 2012 with a 10-6-6 overall record and an 8-1-2 record in Big South play. The Panthers went undefeated in Vert Stadium, finishing with a 6-0-2 mark on their home field. High Point featured an explosive offense which averaged 1.77 goals per game and set new HPU single-season records in points, goals, assists and shots. The HPU defense also played well, posting seven shutouts and surrendering just eight goals in conference play.

“It is great to have the nucleus of our team return this season,” Beall said. “They are more experienced with another year under their belt and will provide a lot of great leadership this season. I am also really excited about the blend of youth with that experience. We had a number of players redshirt last season and have brought in six incoming freshmen. All those players have blended in very well with the re-turning players which gives us a lot of confi-dence about this upcoming season.”

High Point boasts a deep and experienced squad this season, returning 19 letter winners and eight starters from last season’s champion-ship team. Included among the returners are first-team All-Big South selections Becca Hem-by and Taylor Parker and second-team honor-ees Jacky Kessler, Alise LeCompte and Sammy Vercellino. Four of the Panthers’ top five scor-ers from last season return, led by Hemby who had 26 points and tied the HPU single-season record with 11 goals.

“The quality of depth we have this season is incredible,” Beall said. “Because of that we plan to play a high pressure type of game. We are going to play hard for 90 minutes and not give teams a chance to breathe. Our players are really embracing the mental side of the game and learning how to control their thoughts. Add to that our tight family environment and I really think we will be a force to be reckoned with this season.”

HPU was selected second in the 2013 Big South Preseason Poll. High Point received three first-place votes and 123 points over-all to finish just behind defending Big South Tournament Champion Radford. Winthrop finished third in the poll and was followed by Longwood, Coastal Carolina, Campbell, Lib-erty, Charleston Southern, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and VMI. Goalkeepers

High Point brings back a great deal of ex-perience between the pipes this season as both senior Jesse May and sophomore Ivy Cockler-eece are back after seeing time during 2012. While May is expected to start the season in goal, both players will be counted on to con-tribute in 2013.

“All three of our goalkeepers are complete-ly different players after training this preseason with our new goalkeeper coach Brian Peri-man,” Beall said. “They have really fine tuned their games and have progressed by leaps and bounds. We are excited about the direction of our goalkeeping unit.”

May appeared in 21 games during her ju-nior season and finished with a goals-against average of just 1.11 and a save percentage of .816. The senior posted two solo shutouts while splitting four others with Cocklereece. Cockler-eece appeared in 13 games during her freshman campaign and finished with a goals-against av-erage of 1.25 and a save percentage of .765.

Junior Natalie Giudici also returns for her second season with the Panthers and will provide depth behind May and Cocklereece.

DefendersHigh Point boasts an experienced back

line in 2013 that is led by returning All-Big South selections Sammy Vercellino and Alise LeCompte along with All-Freshman selection Amy Burch. The trio was part of a defense that posted seven shutouts and allowed just eight goals in conference play last season. With a year together under their belts they will give HPU one of the top back lines in the Big South.

“I feel really good about our defense this season,” Beall said. “Our back four is very ex-perienced as we return three great starters and have added some quality depth. Our team de-fending was very good last season, especially towards the end and with three All-Conference level starters back we feel that our defense can do some great things this season.”

Vercellino is a three-time All-Big South honoree who will once again play at outside back in 2013. The speedy defender is a skilled two-way player who provides tremendous de-fense on the outside while also contributing to the attack. LeCompte enters her junior season as one of the top center backs in the Big South and has grown into a strong leader in the back for the Panthers. The towering defender is a very good one-on-one defender who often is tasked with marking the opposing team’s top attacking threat. LeCompte is also one of HPU’s top free-kick takers, notching three assists on set pieces last season. The junior is well-regarded around the conference, finishing second to Radford’s Che’ Brown in the voting for Big South Pre-season Defensive Player of the Year. Burch played the majority of her freshman season at center back, but will slide outside to left back in her second season with HPU. A danger on set pieces because of her height and physical-ity, Burch finished with five points on two goals and an assist last season.

Senior Shannon Quackenbush, junior Melissa Sweredoski and sophomore Colleen Deardoff are returning players who will provide depth along the back for High Point. Quack-enbush played in 19 games for High Point at

both center back and outside back in 2012. Sweredoski was a key contributor as a freshman in 2011 and will look to return to that level this season after missing all but six games in 2012 due to injuries.

Freshman Kai-Lin Hernandez is expected to join the three returning starters in the HPU back line, stepping into the empty center back spot next to LeCompte. The freshman comes to High Point from Homestead, Fla. She was named second-team All-Miami-Dade and was a member of both the Florida State and Re-gion III ODP teams in 2012. Other newcom-ers that could see time in the back for High Point include redshirt-freshmen Kelsey Perrell and Hannah Smith and freshman Jill Davis.

MidfieldersHigh Point returns a talented midfield

group that is led by one of the top midfield pairings in the Big South in first-team All-Big South selections Becca Hemby and Taylor Parker.

“I am very excited about the ability of our midfield players this season,” Beall said. “The unit is led by two phenomenal players in Becca Hemby and Taylor Parker. Hemby has been very motivated this preseason and is an incred-ible leader. Parker is a complete playmaker who has great vision and is tremendous in one-on-one situations. They will be joined this season by several other talented players who can con-tribute to both our offense and defense. I think we have the potential to be pretty special in the midfield this season.”

Hemby emerged as one of the best offen-sive players in the conference last season, tying the HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals, including a team-high three game win-ners. The senior is an all-around talent that is equally skilled in the air and with the ball at her feet. Hemby finished second to Winthrop’s Krystyna Freda in the voting for Preseason At-tacking Player of the Year. Parker joined High Point in 2012 and made an immediate impact, finishing with 16 points on four goals and a team-high eight assists. The midfielder is a very

good dribbler and a skilled passer which allows her to get both herself and her teammates into dangerous scoring positions.

Senior Brooke Lisson and redshirt-soph-omore Claire Kelly both return this season and are expected to join Hemby and Parker as starters in the midfield. Lisson played all 22 games last season at right back and will slide back to the midfield this season to fill the de-fensive midfielder position. Lisson is a skilled two-way player who can play in the middle of the field and serve as an outlet for the defense. Kelly returned to the field in 2012 after missing much of her freshman campaign to injury. The redshirt-sophomore came off the bench in 15 games last season and is expected to fill a much bigger role in 2013.

Sophomore Becca Lisson returns after ap-pearing in all 22 games and posting two assists as a freshman. She is able to play as either an attacking or defensive midfielder and will pro-vide depth at both positions this season. Three newcomers that could see time in the midfield are redshirt freshman Sammy Dean and fresh-men Marissa Sullivan and Taylor Thompson.

ForwardsThe Panthers possess a mix of experience

and youth at the forward position in 2013. The unit will be led by junior Jacky Kessler who re-turns after finishing second on the team with 20 points on six goals and a team-high eight assists in 2012. Kessler is a speedy player who puts consistent pressure on the opposing de-fense. She is also a very good passer with 12 assists in two seasons.

“Our front line will be a strong point for us this season,” Beall said. “We have much more depth at the position than we have had in the past, going two or three players deep at each position. Kelly Joline and Jacky Kessler are both established offensive players who look even better than they did last season and fresh-man Jenny Marshall will be a handful for every team we play.”

Senior Kelli Joline ranks among the HPU career leaders in both goals and points as she enters her final collegiate season. The forward scored four goals in 2012, giving her 24 goals

in three seasons. She has proven to be a dan-gerous attacker and a skilled finisher in her three seasons with the Panthers. Junior Sarah Sermonet and sophomore Courtney Butterfass also return this season and will provide experi-ence up top.

Freshman Jenny Marshall is expected to see significant playing time in her first colle-giate season with the Panthers. Marshall gradu-ated from Urbana High School in Maryland where she holds the all-time record for ca-reer assists. She finished her prep career with 97 points on 32 goals and 33 assists and was named the Conference Player of the Year and a member of the NSCAA All-Region team as a junior. Redshirt freshmen Jill Graff and Aleyha Johnson and freshman Meghan Beidleman join Marshall as newcomers that will compete for playing time at forward for HPU.

Marty BeallHead Coach • Alma Mater: Francis Marion ’03 • First season at HPU: 2009

Marty Beall is entering his fifth season at the helm of the High Point women’s soccer team. In his first four seasons, he has led the Panthers to 36 wins and a 24-9-6 record in Big South play. He was named the Big South Coach of the Year in 2012 after guiding High Point to its first out-right Big South Regular Season Championship.

Beall’s 24 conference wins are the most by any coach in program history and he sits just two wins shy of tying the all-time High Point record for career wins.

The Panthers finished the 2012 season with a 10-6-6 overall record and an 8-1-2 mark in conference play. The eight conference wins by HPU broke the previous record of six which was set under Beall in 2010 and matched in 2011.

Becca Hemby tied the HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals to lead the Panthers and was one of five HPU players to earn All-Conference honors in 2012. Hemby and Taylor Parker were both named first-team All-Big South while Jacky Kessler, Alise LeCompte and Sammy Vercellino all earned second-team honors.

Beall began his tenure at HPU with a bang, leading the Panthers to back-to-back Big South Tournament Championships and appearences in the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2010.

In 2010, High Point tied its own Div. I re-cord for wins in a season with 11 and went 6-2-1 in Big South play to earn a share of its first-ever Big South Regular Season Championship. HPU then went on to win three-straight Big South tournament games by identical scores of 1-0 to secure its second-straight championship and its third in four seasons.

Kelli Joline set an HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals, including one against Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tour-nament, and was named first-team All-Big South in her first collegiate season.

In Beall’s first season, the Panthers recovered from a difficult start to the season and finished 4-4-1 in Big South play. High Point’s defense was a big key to the team’s improvement as the Panthers allowed just eight goals in their final 13 games and carried a clean sheet through the

entire conference tournament. Marisa Abbott set an HPU Div. I record with 134 saves on the season.

Beall’s teams have prided themselves on defense in his four seasons, allowing just 33 goals in 49 games against Big South opponents. High Point set a new conference record with six consecutive shutouts in tournament games in 2009 and 2010.

Off the field, Beall’s teams have demon-strated excellence in the classroom. The Panthers were awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award in three-straight seasons from 2010-12 and hold the highest GPA of any High Point team. Brielle Spencer was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both 2010 and 2011 and Hemby was named a second-team Academic All-American in 2012.

Beall came to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including the last six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from the Division II level to Division I. In his head coaching career, Beall owned a 56-44-7 record at FMU despite having to play outside a confer-ence and consistently scheduling nationally and regionally-recognized programs.

During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons. Under his tute-lage four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/adidas All-America and Division I All-Indepen-dent team accolades.

Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as assistant coach to Murray Hatzler, who estab-lished the program in 1995. While an assistant, Beall helped lead Francis Marion to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000.

Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., before joining the

FMU program in 1999. In addition to his colle-giate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club levels. He served as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association and was the head coach of the South Carolina girls ODP staff for seven years

A two-year player at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Beall served as captain of the 1994 squad. He also played one season for the nationally-ranked Montgomery (Junior) College in Rockville, Md.

He holds a USSF “B” license and the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and is an NSCAA Associate staff coach. He is currently on the Region III ODP staff and is an Assistant Director of Coaching at the Piedmont Triad Football Club.

A native of Damascus, Md., Beall (39) earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Francis Marion in 2003. He and his wife, Paige, welcomed their first child, Callie Rae, in 2012.
