"he Great Lakes Steelpan Festival was created in order to fill a void that was present in the steelpan community. As other festivals were researched, it was discovered that this void was not exclusive to the great lakes area. In fact, this void was present throughout the world. The void being referenced is the lack of educational opportunities of young steelpan enthusiasts to learn about the instrument as well as improve their playing abilities.
Many of the other existing festivals are focused
on the performance and competitive side of being in a steelband. Although there are many festivals that offer some sort of education as well, education has been secondary to providing a venue for performing and competing.
The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is focused on creating a non-competitive atmosphere for bands to explore the incredible versatility of the instrument without fear of being penalized for being different. Along with this unique opportunity, GLSF is also concerned about educating tomorrowʼs players with the history of the instrument.
The steelpan is a young instrument and has a very unique history. Unlike nearly any other instrument, there are still people alive today who were around at the birth of this instrument. Many people who are involved with this

instrument are unaware of itʼs history, or the people who helped make it. The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is providing the opportunity for pan enthusiasts to truly experience this history by bringing in guest artists like Dr. Ellie Mannette to share his story about how he helped create this incredible instrument.
Due to the support from the businesses and individuals listed on the inside of the front and back covers, this inaugural event was able to come together. Please show you appreciate their support of the steelpan by supporting them or even just thanking them. In todayʼs world, the arts are receiving less and less funding, and events like this are not possible without us all working together. This festival came from a conversation between Matt Potts and Denette Lynch about a void in the current steelpan festival realm. In less than a year, that seemingly innocent conversation was the genesis of what you see here today.

The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is providing the opportunity for pan enthusiasts to truly experience this history by bringing in guest artists like Dr. Ellie Mannette to share his story about how he helped create this incredible instrument.

"he Great Lakes Steelpan Festival was created in order to fill a void that was present in the steelpan community. As other festivals were researched, it was discovered that this void was not exclusive to the great lakes area. In fact, this void was present throughout the world. The void being referenced is the lack of educational opportunities of young steelpan enthusiasts to learn about the instrument as well as improve their playing abilities.
Many of the other existing festivals are focused
on the performance and competitive side of being in a steelband. Although there are many festivals that offer some sort of education as well, education has been secondary to providing a venue for performing and competing.
The Great Lakes Steelpan Festival is focused on creating a non-competitive atmosphere for bands to explore the incredible versatility of the instrument without fear of being penalized for being different. Along with this unique opportunity, GLSF is also concerned about educating tomorrowʼs players with the history of the instrument.
The steelpan is a young instrument and has a very unique history. Unlike nearly any other instrument, there are still people alive today who were around at the birth of this instrument. Many people who are involved with this
