Ohio 4-H License PlatesWhen 4-H began in 1902, the automobilewasstillanovelty.Now, Ohio's car owners can show their support for one of the largest youthdevelopmentprogramsinthenationbypurchasinga4-Hspecialtylicenseplate.

4-H and FFA Dual Membership PolicyOhio4-HmembersareoftenalsoFFAmembers,sometimeswithinthesamecountyandsometimesinanadjacentcounty.Thesemembersespeciallyneedtokeepinmindthe 4-H policy about 4-H projects being separate from schoolprojects.Tokeepworkinbothorganizationsclearlyseparate,4-Hmembersareadvisedtotakedifferentspeciesinthetwoorganizationsor,attheveryleast,totakemarketanimalsinoneandbreedinganimalsintheother.Seechartforallowableandnotallowableexamples.

4-H Membership EligibilityEligibility for 4-H membership begins when a child is enrolled in kindergarten and is age 5 as of January 1 of the currentyear(Cloverbuds).Membershiptothe4-Hclubprogram begins when a child is enrolled in 3rd grade and isatleastage8asofJanuary1ofthecurrentyear. Ohio4-H membership ends December 31 of the year in which an individualattainstheageof19.Membershipbeginswhenan eligible individual is enrolled in a club or group that is underthedirectionofatrainedadultwhohascompletedtheOSUEvolunteerselectionprocess,andthatiswithinthescopeofOhioStateUniversityExtension.

4-H Membership ExpectationsTheexpectationsfor4-Hmembershipareabalanceamong4-Hprojectwork,involvementinthe4-Hclub,participationin4-Hactivitiesandevents,andworkingtowardsimprovingone’spersonalgrowth.(TheUnderstanding 4-H Projects sectiononpage4addressestheprojectworkcomponentofamember’s4-Hexperience.)

Cross-County Lines Membership Youthareexpectedtoaffiliatewiththe4-Hprogramintheircounty of residence or receive approval for membership outsidetheircountyofresidence.

• 4-Hmembershipintwocountiessimultaneouslyisnotpermitted.

• Youth must ask the county they would like to participateiniftheymayparticipateinthatcountyinsteadofintheircountyofresidence.

• Insituationswherethecountyofresidencedoesnot have a 4-H program, youth may not join 4-H in anothercounty.

• IfcountyfinancialsupportforOhioStateUniversityExtensionceasestoexist,4-Hmembershipstatusalready established in that county will end on the datethefundingends(establishedbyExtensionAdministration).4-Hmembershipofyouth,residingin a county that has lost funding, who have pre-established cross-county line 4-H membership agreementsinplacewillbepermittedtocontinueparticipationintheirnon-residentcountythroughDecember31ofthat4-Hmembershipyear.

Project Work Through 4-HEachprojectbookcontainsawealthofinformationandactivitiesforplanningandconductingaproject.Theprojectscanbecompletedbyparticipatinginactivitiesthroughorganizedprojectgroupsorbycarryingouttheactivitiesindividuallyundertheguidanceofaparentorotheradult.

What is a 4-H Project?A4-Hprojectismadeupofthreetypesofactivities:

• Hands-onactivities:making,producing,practicing,observing,testing,interviewing,caringfor,etc.

• Organizedactivities:demonstrations,speeches,workshops,camps,countyjudging,projectactivities,exhibits,etc.

• Leadership/Citizenshipactivities:conducting,planning,teaching,assisting,informing,organizing,etc.

Does a 4-H member have to take a project?Yes.However,therearetwowaystotakeaproject,eitherasanindividualprojectorasagroupproject.

How does a member select a project?When choosing a project, consider your interests, background, what is necessary to start your project, and whatisavailabletohelpyoucompleteit.Reviewthisguideasafamily,club,orgroup.Agoodruleofthumbistoselectnomorethantwoprojectsasafirst-yearmember.

Includedinthedescriptionofeachprojectisalevel—beginning(B),intermediate(I),oradvanced(A).Theseareprimarilyskilllevels,sothatifyouhavelittleornoexperienceinaprojectarea,forexample,youareabeginner,regardlessofyourage.Intermediate-levelprojectsareformemberswithsomeexperienceinaprojectarea,andadvanced-levelprojectsareformembersexperiencedinaprojectarea.Thereareexceptionsthough!Someprojectswerewrittenwithcertainagesinmind.Inthosecases,theprojectdescriptionsgivetheages.Also,someprojectsaredescribed with an “X,” meaning they are appropriate for all skillandagelevels.

Countyfairsandthestatefairoftenhaveagerequirementsdifferentthanthoseforprojectenrollment.Whenparticipatinginafairevent,besuretoreviewtherelatedguidelines.

Once you’ve selected your project(s) for the year, request theprojectbook(s)fromyour4-Hclubleader.Lookforthe

Where does a member begin when planning a 4-H project?Once a member has selected a project, he/she should startbyreadingthesectionoftheprojectbookcalledthe

Can a school project be used as a 4-H project too?No.Inorderforamembertoachievetheprogressionofknowledge,attitudes,skillsandaspirationsnecessaryforpositiveyouthdevelopment,all4-Hexperiencesinwhicha4-H'erisinvolvedmustbeseparateanddifferentfrompreviousorsimultaneousexperiencesinotherprograms,groups,businesses,andorganizations.

Does a member have to do everything the Member Project Guide suggests?No,althoughcompletingtheMemberProjectGuideintherecommendedtimeframeisthebestwaytosucceedinfairjudging.Howmuchtocompleteisuptothemember,parents,andadvisor.Dependingupontheirinterestsandabilities,membersmayplantodoalittleoralot.Projectplans also can change as a member’s interests and needs change.

How much time can be spent on a project?Itcanbeamatterofdays,weeks,orevenmonths,dependingonthesizeandscopeofthemember’splan.Someprojectsalsocanberepeatedtoaccomplishadditionalprojectgoals.

Is it necessary to attend county-level judging to complete a project?Forsomemembers,projectcompletionisnothingmorethanparticipatinginprojectactivities,completingapredetermined number of project goals, and reviewing accomplishmentswithaparentorprojecthelper.Somecountiesrequireattendanceatcounty-leveljudging.Alwayscheckwithyourprojecthelperforspecificjudgingrequirements.Forexample,sometimesitisnecessarytobringanexhibitalongwithyourprojectbooktointerviewjudging.

How can a 4-H member qualify to compete at the Ohio State Fair?

For non-animal and non-livestock events, qualifying for the statefairinvolvescompetingatthecountylevelandbeingselectedasstatefairrepresentative.Somecountiesholdeventsthatarenotstatefairevents,andsomecountiesdonotholdalloftheeventsthattakeplaceatthestatelevel.Inaddition,ifyouaretakingaprojectandareoutsideoftherecommended age range, be sure to double-check county andstatefairregulationsaboutparticipating (www.ohio4h.org/state fair/guidebook.html).Generallyspeaking, youth outside the recommended age range are noteligibleforcompetition.Foranimalandlivestockevents,be sure to check state fair guidelines at http://4hansci.osu.edu.
