How to Use This Guide

BLR® has been reporting salary data for a select group of benchmark jobs for almost a decade. How-ever, in 2006, we greatly expanded the jobs, as well as the number of industries and metropolitanareas for which we report data. This approach to collecting and using salary data makes it possiblefor us to offer our annual survey for Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) professionals, the 2013 EHS Salary Guide.

This survey includes data effective July 1, 2012. Data are reported for 32 positions specific to the EHSfield and allow you to analyze changes in salaries from year to year. Some of the positions includedin this guide are nonexempt and some are exempt.

“Nonexempt” employees are defined as workers who are covered by the minimum wage and overtimerequirements of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation is expressed as an hourlyrate. Nonexempt employees must be paid at least the minimum hourly rate. Currently, the federal mini-mum wage is $7.25 per hour and employers must also comply with state minimum wage laws.

“Exempt” employees are defined as workers who are not covered by the overtime requirements ofthe FLSA. Compensation is expressed as annual salary. For a position to be classified as exempt underthe FLSA, employees must be paid an annual salary of at least $23,660.

Have a question? We will be happy to answer any questions about the data presented in this report, but confidentiality prevents us from supplying information about individual respondents.

Tips for Interpreting the Data

1. Review the responsibilities of each position description before making comparisons with the po-sitions in your company; we recommend that you not make comparisons by title alone.

2. Concentrate on the rates reported by percentile for each job and, in particular, the 50th percentile,as this is the midpoint of the data reported for the position. Data are also reported for the 25th and75th percentiles to provide you with information on the range of salaries for each position.

3. In some instances, there are insufficient data for all data points or for certain metropolitan areasand industries. These instances are identified as “n/a” on the reports.

4. Consider the recruiting area for any given position when deciding what demographic selectionsto use. For instance, some high-level or specialized jobs may require statewide recruiting efforts, while other jobs may be recruited at the local level.

Column Headings

The first column of each page of the report indicates the demographic selection for the data pre-sented in that row. As noted above, the reports contain 2 years’ worth of data. The next three columnshave data effective 7/1/2009 and the second section has data effective 7/1/2010. The column head-ings at the top of each table may be interpreted as follows:

Heading Explanation

25th Percentile The rate below which 25% of the data fall

50th Percentile The median rate of all employees reported

75th Percentile The rate below which 75% of the data fall

The last two columns of data on each page show the dollar and percent change in the salary orhourly rate reported at the 50th percentile.

Note: In some instances, you may see large variances in the 2010 and 2011 data. This likely reflectschanges both in the industry and in the employers reporting data for those jobs.

Geographic/Demographic Labels

Data for each job are reported at the national level in the aggregate and also by industry. In addition, data are provided for all 50 states where available.

2013 EHS SALARY GUIDE:EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The environmental, health, and safety fields are in the midst of change. Job respon-sibilities are shifting, and you are being asked to do more with less. As an EHS pro-fessional, it’s hard to tell if you are being paid competitively. BLR’s 2013 EHS SalaryGuide will help you evaluate if you are being paid a fair amount for the responsibili-ties you are shouldering. In addition, EHS managers can find the information tokeep their departments competitive and efficient—paying the right amount to re-tain hard-to-fill positions but not overpaying on others.

EXEMPT POSITIONS HOLDING GROUNDData for the 20 benchmarked positions show that the fragile economic recoveryhas been good to some exempt EHS employees. Salary increases from 2011 to2012 for those 20 positions ranged from a high of 9.85% to a low of 1.33%, with anaverage of 3.20%. The average is up from the 2010 to 2011 average of 1.99%. No ex-empt position (Chemist) saw a decrease in salary. Industrial Psychologists nation-wide saw a sharp increase of over 9% (see Table 1 for details). All but one of the20 exempt positions realized a greater percent increase in median salary in 2011–2012 over 2010–2011. But that is only because Compliance Officers had seen a dra-matic jump of 16.77% from 2010-2011.

COLA BACK There’s good news and not so good news this year. The good news is that costof living adjustment (COLA)* for 2012 is 3.6%. That's the first adjustmentsince 2009, which was the first year without an automatic COLA since theywent into effect In 1975 (COLA for 2013 is 1.77%). The not so good news isthat only 5 of the 20 exempt positions received increases in 2012 above COLA.(See Chart 1.)

Comparing 2011 to 2012 data, the highest change in median salary for exemptEHS positions was 9.85% for Industrial Psychologists. Emergency ManagementDirectors came in second at a 4.77% increase over 2011.

Industrial Psychologists are involved in applying the principles of psychol-ogy to workplace situations, including personnel, administration, manage-ment, sales and marketing problems. Their activities may including policyplanning, employee screening, training and development, and organizationaldevelopment and analysis. Emergency Management Directors are the folksresponsible for coordinating disaster response or crisis management activi-ties, providing disaster preparedness training, and preparing emergencyplans and procedures for natural, wartime, or technological disasters andhostage situations.

*COLAs are periodic changes in wages and benefits designed to bring pay in line with increasesin the cost of living.
