Final step in reaching This summer, some 7,000 all-

star teams in nearly 80 countries around the globe began compet-ing for the chance to claim the most prestigious prize in all of youth sports: the Little League World Series championship.

On Friday, 12 of the last 60 or so teams left standing will begin battling in Bristol to clear the last hurdle toward their ultimate goal — a trip to Williamsport, Penn., for the Little League World Series. The Eastern Regionals

held here will send two teams into that final round of 16 in Pennsylvania, as games take place over the next 10 days.

For the 27th straight year, Bristol is the final step for teams seeking a spot in that annual tour-nament for 11- and 12-year-old baseball players held every year since 1947 in Williamsport, Penn.

Bristol is actually hosting two different regional tournaments over the next 10 days, as it has since Little League expanded its World Series field from eight to 16 teams — half from the United

States — in 2001.The New England Regional

includes champions from the six New England states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The Mid-Atlantic Regional includes five state champions from the east coast — Delaware , Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania — along with the District of Columbia.

Each regional sends one repre-sentative to the 16-team World Series (including eight USA regional champs and eight inter-national teams), to be played Aug. 15-25.

The Connecticut representa-tive is Westport Little League, a newcomer to the Regionals in Bristol. Going a perfect 12-0 in district, sectional and state tour-nament play — including a pair of victories over Edgewood in sectional play that eliminated the Bristol team from the tourna-ment — Westport has outscored its opponents by a combined 63-8.

Many of this year’s other compet-itors may be familiar to Bristol fans.

After missing out the past two years, the familiar Capitol City Little League of Washington, D.C., is returning to Bristol as the District of Columbia’s champion. This year will mark the league’s 12th appearance here since 1998. Though the D.C. representative has traditionally not done well at the regional level, last year D.C.’s Northwest Washington Little League handed New Jersey its only loss of the tournament — though that also proved to be D.C.’s only victory.

Almost as familiar to Bristol Little League fans as Capitol City is Rhode Island’s Lincoln Little League, which is making its eighth appearance here since 1999, but first since 2009. Lincoln won the New England Regional and advanced to the World Series twice before, in 2001 and 2004.

Delaware’s Newark National Little League is returning for the third straight year, and also played in Bristol in 1992. Last year, Delaware advanced to the Mid-Atlantic championship game,

Little League nirvana

where it suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to New Jersey.

Vermont’s South Burlington Little League is also back from last year, making its fourth appear-ance here (2003 and 2001 were the other times). Not only that, but the team has a nearly unprec-edented six players back from last year’s team that went 2-2 in pool play and gave eventual New England champ Connecticut a

solid challenge in a 4-3 loss in the semifinal round.

New Hampshire’s Rye Little League is also a returning team, although the last time it was here was 2003.

The team hails from a coastal community with a population of

only about 5,000 people.Other teams will be less familiar.Massachusetts’ Newton South

East Little League, coming from a city with four different leagues, is making its first appearance at this level, although other teams from the city have advanced this far.

New York is traditionally one of the toughest state represen-tatives in Bristol, and this year Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Little League of Burnt Hills is making its first appearance as that state’s representative.

New Jersey’s East Greenwich Little League of Clarksboro is not only making its first appearance at the regional level, but also claimed its first ever district title — the first level of tournament play — this summer.

Maine’s Saco/Maremont Little League of Saco is making its third trip to the regional level, but first since 1958.

Pennsylvania’s Lionville Little League, another newcomer, has gone 11-0 and scored 149 runs in those 11 games.

Maryland’s Berlin Little League is also a newcomer to the regional tournament level, but went 10-0 in tournament play so far while outscoring its opponents 96-9.

In the New England and Mid-

Atlantic regional tournaments, each team plays four round-robin games, with the top four teams in each regional pool advancing to the semifinal round. The winners of those games face off for their regional championship with a trip to the Little League World Series at stake.

Last year, Connecticut’s Fairfield American Little League and New Jersey’s Par Troy East Little League of Parsippany advanced to the World Series. In a double-elimination format at the World Series, Connecticut lost its opening game but came back to win a pair before being elimi-nated, while New Jersey went 1-2.

Tokyo Kitasuna Little League of Tokyo, Japan, won the 2012 Little League World Championship, beating Goodlettsville Baseball Little League of Tennessee 12-2 in the championship game.

TEAM NOTEBOOKThis is Westport Little League’s first trip to the Little League Baseball Eastern Regional Tournament. Westport outscored its opponents 98-17 on the way to a 12-0 record. Adazian, Knight and Popken have led the way on the mound, allow-ing a miniscule 1.4 runs per game. Manager Tim Rogers believes Westport is battle-tested and has the depth in the lineup to do some damage. Westport looks to become the fourth Connecticut team since 2008 to reach the Little League World Series.

Speed and defense has been the key, along with solid pitching. Da-vis, Jack Hardcastle, Nathan Hard-castle and Miller have led a staff that has surrendered 16 runs in six games (2.6 per game). Newark can also score runs in bunches and has failed to score 10 runs in a game just once this postseason. Newark looks to become just the second Delaware state champion to reach the Little League World Series.

overall. This group of players has won three state championships, starting at the 9-10 year-old level in 2011. They went on to win states at the 10-11 level in 2012, then followed it up with a title at the 11-12 level this year. Defense and timely hitting has been key for Saco/Maremont so far. They have also stared down pressure and prevailed. Saco/Maremont lost 4-2 to Bayside (Portland) in the state tournament, then proceeded to score 26 runs combined in the next two meetings between the teams with the state title hanging in the balance. If Saco/Maremont wins the New England title, it would be the first Maine participant in the Little League World Series since Westbrook Little League in 2005.

TEAM NOTEBOOKNewton South East Little League is making its first trip to the Eastern Regional Tournament in 2013. The city of Newton, Mass. plays host to four Little League programs. Other Newton leagues have played in the Regional Tournament, but this is the first occurrence for Newton South East Little League. The road to a state championship was long and a bit bumpy for Newton South East. The team suffered an early

defeat to a strong Wellesley North team in district play. However, the squad was able to seek out their revenge to beat the same Wellesley North team two times to claim the district banner. The team suffered another loss in section play, but again was capable of playing solid baseball in order to advance to state play. State play was much different. The Newton South East group certainly played their best baseball without dropping a game to any opponent in the states and now find themselves playing for a chance to claim the New England banner. In all, the squad came from behind to win nine of 13 ball games so far in tournament play. While Massachusetts’ offense does not appear to be overpowering, they certainly appear to play superb de-fense and pitch well in tight spots.

Rye hit at least one home run in each district game and scored 143 runs total in New Hampshire postseason play. Rye reached 10 or more runs in eight of its 13 games. On the mound, Chase, Guerin, Hindle, King, Malila and Swenson can all throw multiple innings. The pitching staff has allowed just 3.1 runs per game so far. If Rye wins the New England Championship, it would be the first

TEAM NOTEBOOKEast Greenwich Little League is making its first trip to Bristol for the Little League Baseball East-ern Regional Tournament. In fact, research also shows this is the first time East Greenwich has ever won a Little League Baseball New Jersey District 15 banner. Manager Jim Szestowicki says his team has great defense and solid pitching, but it is the team’s offense that clearly stands out. This squad breezed through district play, with a record of 5-0, while outscoring opponents 89-9. Although East Greenwich was defeated once in sectional play, the team still was able to push a lot of runners across the plate over the course of the sectional tournament to claim the title. While in state play, the East Greenwich group was matched up with perennial powerhouses Nutley East and Toms River American little leagues. While EGLL may have been viewed as the underdog, they took care of busi-ness with a perfect 3-0 record in state play and punched their ticket to Bristol. In all the East Green-wich offense averages 13 runs per game and can certainly move runners around the bases quickly. If the seven-man pitching staff can

produce quality starts and quick bullpen work, New Jersey may prolong their summer by traveling to Williamsport, Penn. for the Little League World Series.

TEAM NOTEBOOKBurnt Hills Balston Lake Little League can win going away, and it can squeeze out tight games as well. The result is the first appear-ance for them in the Eastern Re-gional Tournament. The run wasn’t an easy one as Burnt Hills took on opponents from throughout what is arguably the most talented state in the region. To win the state title, Burnt Hills went through perennial power South Shore Little League (Staten Island) twice at the state level. The pitching staff gives up just 3.1 runs per game and the de-fense is solid. With continued good play, Burnt Hills could be the first New York champion to reach the Little League World Series since the South Shore National Little League did it in 2009.

TEAM NOTEBOOKLionville Little League, just outside of Philadelphia, is making its first trip to the Eastern Regional Tournament. Lionville has a very high baseball IQ and players are capable of play-ing multiple positions, according to manager Steve Jewett. Lionville has a potent offense, which it used to outscore opponents 149-45. The offense averages nearly 14 runs per contest while the pitching staff sur-renders less than five. Lionville looks to return to Pennsylvania as the Mid-Atlantic representative in the Little League World Series. Keystone Little League was the last Pennsylvania champion to do so in 2011.

TEAM NOTEBOOKLincoln Little League returns to the Eastern Regional Tournament for the eighth time, the first since 2009. Lin-coln will be looking for its third berth in the Little League World Series, with the other two coming in 2001 and 2004. Lincoln owns two of Rhode Island’s previous five appearances in the Little League World Series. Lincoln has scored double digits in each of its last seven games and didn’t score less than eight in a game

on the way to a perfect postseason record in Rhode Island. Lincoln has outscored its opponents 102-12 and gives up just over a run per game. The pitching staff has four shutouts to its credit, which makes Lincoln a tough out. If Lincoln wins the New England championship, it would be the second Little League World Series appearance for Rhode Island cham-pion in the past three years (Cumber-land American did it in 2011).

TEAM NOTEBOOKSouth Burlington Little League is making its second straight appear-ance in the Eastern Regional Tourna-ment and fourth overall (2001, 2003, 2012, 2013). There are six returning players from last year’s team. This year’s team is very athletic, has great team speed and says its doesn’t have a weak spot in the lineup, according to manager Sean McGrath. South Burlington averaged 11.8 runs per contest and outscored opponents 130-34 in Vermont. The offense has been solid, but South Burlington also wants quality pitching from Guyette, Klesch, Premsagar and Tate. South Burlington is looking to become the first-ever Vermont champion to reach the Little League World Series.
